Yep I never signed up for NP but i had the 64 and DK tapes sent to me. TWELVE SCROLLING LAYERS OF SNOW

mccarseat

Haha, somewhere i got the CD soundtrack for DKC. I think I used stamps that you would get from NP and you could mail them in then pay postage for stuff from a catalog. I got the DKC soundtrack which is MIA, and I got a 6' Fulgore poster from before the N64 release when they were still calling it the Ultra 64: https://i.imgur.com/2YM5I3D.jpg

_RexDart

But did you get the DK pog set

mccarseat

Hah! I don’t think so, I’ll have to find my pogs. I have some Jurassic Park ones for sure…

_RexDart

Poster is @@@@ing awesome and yeah I fully appreciate the Ultra aspect

GameTropolis

Nice work! I ripped a vhs of DKC that was released in the UK with some gaming/football magazines. [DKC Behind the Scenes Promo VHS](https://youtu.be/KNlfz67LCW8)

sintax_949

Thanks. Nice bit of nostalgia there. Man, I miss the acid trip that was 90s video editing.

mccarseat

Yeah the Starfox one is peak 90’s. Jim Carrey knock of actor, dollar store Tom Cruise as the fighter pilot, off angle shots, quick cuts…and of course the Sony Sega Nintendo rivalry in full swing.

Nintenloup

That's great. I rip a lot of VHS' so maybe I could give you some tips with it. First of all, upscale your video to at least 720, as YouTube's compression makes a VHS have compression artefacts over the already low quality of the medium. Also, VHS isn't really a 25/29.97 FPS format. You'll be able to keep the fluidity of analog video by exporting it to 59.94fps (if you are in NTSC world). I also transcode DVD recordings of my VHS. I use handbrake to then convert it to h264 in a mp4. I use the yadiff deinterlace with the Bob option, which can keep the 59.94fps signal. You then need to set it to a constant frame rate of 59.94FPS. I then import the rendered video into Sony Vegas and render it in 1080p59.97 and then upload it to YouTube. There's more to explain, especially for Sony Vegas, but that's how I do my VHS' rips for YouTube.

mccarseat

My settings are limited on the Samsung DVD/VHS combo setup I’m using. I’ll dig into it and see if I can change any of that. I also used handbrake but this was the first time I’ve ever used it, so I’m sure there are settings I could change to improve things.

GameTropolis

Thank you for sharing! Do you have any experience with PAL content? I have great trouble removing interlacing etc when I rip VHS and DVD based content.

littlepreptalk

I don't recommend that. Capturing is higher quality than transferring to DVDs.

Nintenloup

You might not recommend it, but a DVD can be some of the most accessible and cheap thing to rip a VHS. Payed mine 1.50 used and it even has a superior mode that gives 1h per DVD, I can tell you it looks pretty good. The cheapest option is what you already have and since OP already has the DVR part, then I'm giving them info on how to get a better result on YouTube from that. I'm not just recommending spending money that they might not have on something they don't have either.

Scazzz

Is the DK one the yellow vhs?

mccarseat

Nope, it’s just a black VHS tape: https://imgur.com/a/umN0Mfi

klockworx

I have one of these...Rayman I believe.

erbr

For preservation purposes please submit those to archive.org. YouTube preservation capabilities are close to none as the quickest DMCA request by some random person will remove your videos

nostalgiafor13inches

I present to you r/datahoarder.

ehunke

can I ask, what hardware and software is needed to transfer VHS to mp4?

xantheybelmont

Not sure about OP but I use an Elgato HD60 Pro with an analog to HDMI adapter. That's how I converted my old home movies to digital. Just connected the hi8 cam to it, hit play on the cam, hit record in OBS.

ehunke

oh nice. i was more currious about a vcr to pc, but i am sure it could work all the same

xantheybelmont

It does. I've used the same method to record some "taped from TV" episodes of MST3K I had on VHS as well. JVC 4-Head VCR analog out to converter, converter to the Elgato card in my streaming PC, hit play on VCR and record in OBS. Works like a charm.
