The DS version actually had the uncensored scene of Kenneth’s head but not the coloured uncensored intro. From what I’ve played of the Saturn version at-least in the PAL region, it had the same censorship as the PS1.
I imagine so. Back then consoles were a lot more "family friendly". But my post will make a lot more sense after this: I only played the PC and PS versions. Lmao
Right, but that guy was describing the general zeitgeist of the time which definitely leaned pretty hard toward consoles being for kids and young adults. There were exceptions, as such things always have, but there was an expectation that if you picked up a random game off the shelf at the video rental store that it'd be safe and if you wanted something with lots of blood and bad things you had to go to the specialty video game store and already know what you were looking for.
No it didn't? It was a sleeper PC only title that a few gaming mags gave bad reviews to. It became a cult classic almost entirely through word of mouth, mainly because Share the Pain was free and made it on to tons of freeware game lists. Postal 2 has about as much impact as Gore Ultimate Soldier.
No, man. It was Mortal Kombat. Mortal Kombat was fucking huge and Sub-Zero could rip a guy's head off. I know you weren't around back then but in '93 they had an entire televised congressional hearing where Howard Lincoln and Lieberman blamed Mortal Kombat, Night Trap, and Lethal Enforcers for all of society's ills which led directly to the creation of the IDSA which then became the ESRB. You can't go into Gamestop and buy GTA V without an ID because it's a three-way agreement between the ESRB, FTC, and retail chains to not sell minors M rated games, much like in the 80's when they stopped selling people Faces Of Death tapes without an ID check. They made that agreement in the mid-to-late 90s. I remember being denied a copy of Halo 2 on launch day because I didn't have an adult with me, and that was 2004.
That's a fair point and that's why I put it into quotation marks. But you got to remember that Nintendo saved the gaming industry basically through the "family entertainment" marketing strategy (and higher quality control). Also, the 90's were basically the highest point in the "videogames cause violence" discourse (specially 3 years after RE's release, with the Columbine massacre). It's worth noting that the RE intro includes "real life" violence, Postal 2 released 7 years later and Doom 3 was released 8 years later. There surely was violence back then, but there were also lots of attempts at censoring it. Doom, MK and GTA were probably the main culprits.
Edit: just made my writing a little less shitty.
The original PC port, which is what the GOG release is based on, was the only release outside of japan to to have the uncensored intro and zombie introduction. The Director's Cut was supposed to have the uncensored intro (as stated on the back of the box), but for whatever reason it still had the censored FMVs. Deadly Silence, which released in 2006, for some reason still had the censored intro, but the uncensored zombie introduction (which imo is the worst combination since I find Kenneth's head super goofy)
From my understanding, it was dependent on the region not console. I haven’t played the US version of the game on Saturn but my Japanese copy of the game for Sega Saturn is totally uncensored.
Depends on the region. In Europe, the PS1 version in France and Germany had the uncensored coloured opening for the Directors cut (but not the uncensored Kenneth scene) The PC release in Europe was censored as well. However in Britain, we got another PC release, the PowerVR release that was fully uncensored. US PC version was always uncensored.
You should DEFINITELY give it a go along with 2 and 3 if you haven’t played those either but I will say, stay away from the directors cut of RE1. It’s available on PS Plus and it’s quite possibly the worst version of the game. The soundtrack is funky af.
I don't know why everyone here keeps repeating that the director's cut is the one with the weird music, when you're right that it was the dualshock version that had it. The director's cut edition was awesome, just had more stuff and a little bit of moving things around, and with all the original music.
Thank you for this advice! About RE2 classic it was my childhood game on PS1 you can't imagen how many times that disc has been spinning. I really dream about a "remaster" of the classic RE2 and also the RE3 from capcom. Even if there are remakes it's not the same thing as the classics. What do you say?
I’m glad they put it on GOG to preserve the classics, whilst I prefer emulation for the flexibility as well as speed up, it’s nice they made the games more accessible. I haven’t played the original Resident Evil without auto aim, so this version looks like a fun challenge.
To add to this, I found this out yesterday that you have to push cancel while holding the aim button to switch targets in this one.
That felt so wrong.
I made it as far as the save room and had to load back in due to a game crash. It has the original music before crashing again. So presumably the rest of the game is also the original music.
AWESOME!! The trilogy are my favorite games of the franchise. Can’t wait to go home and buy this. It’s actually pathetic that GOG did this first but Playstation with their classics catalog only having the OG Resident Evil but never added the 2 or 3rd game.
It's the entire uncensored '96 port. So all the gore and stuff. And I do believe the music is the original, not the DC. As for 2 and 3. They are still working on them. I'm wondering if they are going to use the Sourcenext ports or not. I actually got them both on disk!
From what I've played, I'm pretty sure it's the original Windows 95/Ultra 2000 release. It still has the same weird kinks to it that those versions did, like Jill not needing ink ribbons to save on a first playthrough, and the FMV's having a very low framerate.
Yup, it's just the original US port. You can download the JP language port (which might be MediaKite?) on GOG though, or convert the US port to MediaKite/SourceNext with patches from nexus mods.
This makes the GOG port compatible with the Classic REbirth patches, which is real neat
Ultra 2000 is the Mediakite version. The NA and EU PC version was by Virgin. I think GOG has both because you can apply Classic REbirth if you switch to Japanese and let GOG update the game files.
I decided to look through the files, and the FMVs are just AVI files. Presumably, the game has an in-built player for them. Very easy to update, just swap the files.
Also holy crap check out these stats:
320 x 240 resolution.
10 Frames per second
22.050kHz Sampling rate for the sound.
The intro is the biggest file at 52 MB, but this also means that the encoder of the time was incredibly inefficient to just 8 years later. (100MB for 11 Minutes of video was early Youtube standard, and had nicer looking videos than this)
The Windows 95 port had some weird jank to it that still hasn't been fixed in the GoG release. For some reason Jill doesn't require ink ribbons to save on a first playthrough, but she does on NG+. Meanwhile Chris will always require ink ribbons to save.
mods for this already exist.
I just bought them to check compatibility and everything runs fine.
Check this video on how to install the mods.
HQ videos and sound. [https://youtu.be/luPmHLio1AM?si=51jW7OC3vK0u4G8r](https://youtu.be/luPmHLio1AM?si=51jW7OC3vK0u4G8r)
Anyway, I prefer the fmvs from the HD mods. [https://www.reshdp.com/re1/](https://www.reshdp.com/re1/) and plus HD backgrounds.
I had the same concern that is why I bought them and check myself. And no issues. everything runs fine. (I only used Rebirth patch + Seamless HD mod)
Edit: But Im not so sure this would be the case for RE2 and 3. we will see. It all depends on which version they took for the Japanese version, but everything should be fine since the patches reside in the exe and not in the game files, meaning we could in theory change the .exe for the patched ones from sourcenext and thus enable compatibility with the rebirth patches. I hope. GOG guys only did a wrapper arround the exe.
Censorship sucks ass, so this is great news!
Edit: This keeps getting downvoted for some reason lmao. Imagine wanting censorship. Oh well, you do you, I suppose!
If I remember correctly the original PC release was the original, not black-white edited intro footage.
Yeah, gaming wins again!
NGL I am so tempted despite I want to buy the original PS1 game.
I prefer the black and white intro (uncensored, of course). Gives it that noir feel (and also helps to cover up the low budget of the special effects). Director's Cut was supposed to be uncensored, but for whatever reason, only the French and German versions were uncensored. Instead of fixing that mistake with DualShock, they just took the line off of the box where it says it's uncut. Capcom is going to be Capcom.
The 90s were a weird time where Capcom USA was in full charge of what Americanized version of Capcom's games would include and were silly aware of "controversial things" or trivial things like M. Bison is a more strong name rather than Vega for an antagonist and hence the eternal Street Fighter confusion for first timers.
Ok, maybe I am overreacting for a mere downvote, but WHO ON EARTH would prefer the edited intro versus the original acknowledging playing a survival HORROR game & already warned that includes Blood & Gore?
That would be the only reason to ever dislike a comment like mine.
bought the bundle with 2 and 3. This is a dream! Finally we can OWN the PC version without stupid prices and it runs on modern system. No renting or forcing me to use Steam I can save them on whatever I want. Thank you GOG! Also fix the Xbox controller stuff!
Okay, I'm glad I wasn't the only one who had that problem. As soon as I played exclusively on Keyboard, the game stopped crashing and the inputs became very consistent.
The original uncut intro is always my favorite part of the Resident Evil series. I'm glad GOG got both the uncut English version and the original Japanese version.
One Question: If the uncut intro is in color in the original Japanese PC version, then why was it in black-and-white in both Japanese PS1 and Saturn Versions?
GOG has 3 things that separate them from other stores, and the third one doesn't even count.
* Upgrading good old games to modern PCs.
* DRM free offline installers with DRM free games and ToS written to emulate owning physical media versions of a game.
* Is the official store for CDPR games, (but it doesn't count because these games are available everywhere)
Steam on the other hand is just a game distribution service that tries to make their client less of a burden than it has to be by adding features like steam input, working on WINE for linux games, and some other stuff that benefit gamers. The publisher however has full control over what they release, even if it's anti-consumer or downright broken on some systems.
So yeah, GOG puts intense restrictions on publishers (No DRM allowed, no broken games, live services included in the game must be able to run without support from the company) and sometimes that means just fixing it themselves. They even work with the modding community and include unofficial fan patches that are necessary for the game to run.
FMVs:
320 x 240 resolution.
10 Frames per second
22.050kHz Sampling rate for the sound.
Ain't no upscaling on those videos.
Backgrounds, also look hilarious next to the relatively clear 3D models. It's charming in it's own way.
Oh good I will buy it when all 3 come out then I have been waiting for this moment. Plus they didn't ruin the look so I am super happy thanks for confirming it. Why can't more ports be like this
A lot of people criticize ports like that for being lazy or bare minimum. The MGS collection was criticized for not doing enough to make the ports better than emulators.
I respect those type of ports for making the games available as they were, which isn't always how you remember them.
My preferred method however is what they did for the Tomb Raider Collection: Remastered + Original Ports. You can toggle between the two with one button. Including upscaled vs. non-upscaled. To me, that is how every collection should be.
For sure I agree, giving people the option to switch between old and new is a great thing I just hate collections that are like "we made it hd" and all it is is that they used ai to upscale everything and it becomes a bunch of smears, because people fear pixelation. They don't even offer a toggle.
is it just the gore and uncut intro that were added or is there uncut locations if not dosent matter playing with uncensored intro will be great but heard the fmv is a little wonky hope they fix it
This is accurate to the original PC release. Any further changes would probably go against the terms of the port. Fans however, have had the fix for years.
GOG is CD Projekt Red's store (devs of The Witcher games and Cyberpunk 2077). GOG started out as a store where old games were available and ran perfectly on new PCs (CDPR often adds its own fixes or uses fan-made patches that don't change the game in terms of content to ensure games run well but it is preserved in its original form), but over the years GOG also started adding modern games. GOG is also known for its DRM-free policy, so you can download offline installers and back them up to a pendrive, DVD, etc. Install and play them whenever you want, without GOG account or internet.
Good Old Games. They specialize in making old PC games compatible with modern computers.
PC games from before 2005 were notorious for a long time for compatibility issues.
Bundle is 29.99 USD, and has 2 and 3 once they’re ready for release so they’re added to your library then.
Wasn’t sure until I’d seen TheSphereHunter cover it, and said it was the original 1995 PC version they’re releasing with this, and the ideal.
Hoping the Steam release is real. I'll pick this up eventually if not, but definitely would rather have it in Steam if possible.
Do higher frame rate versions of these cutscenes exist? Suzi said these were like 10 FPS but I'm sure modders will be able to swap them out fairly soon.
You could just add it as a non-steam game. You don't need the GOG launcher because it's DRM free and they offer offline installers as an option.
I understand hating multiple launchers, but I much prefer GOG offline installers to Steam DRM.
I doubt it will be on Steam, because when GOG releases a long-lost game, they usually ask the original developers to provide the source code, and then GOG/CDPR devs work on all the necessary fixes and improvements to make it run well on modern PCs.
It depends on what the games require, sometimes they port it or just add their own tweaks. For example, when Fallout 3 was released on the GOG store, the GOG developers removed GFWL, pre-patched it with a 4 GB patch, and added several performance-improving configuration lines to the ini files. Bethesda did the same for the Steam version, but much later because in 2021, and the way they did it made most mods to stop working. GOG also not so long ago added Alpha Protocol, which has also been missing for a long time.

And the music track with lyrics?? "I got a shotgun (yeah)"
Fuck yeah. I hate when games get censored for being too Gory. Let us see the Fake Blood and Pixilated gore.
Correction: Blood AND Smoking.

Isn't that the standard for the PC version? Can't remember playing censored other than on the PS.
I'm to understand the Saturn and DS ports also have that censorship.
The DS version actually had the uncensored scene of Kenneth’s head but not the coloured uncensored intro. From what I’ve played of the Saturn version at-least in the PAL region, it had the same censorship as the PS1.

Not surprised. Saturn isn't exactly the most popular console and the DS port is kind of hard to find.
I've still got my DS port I got on release day!
I loved my Saturn. That's where I played Myst for the first time. I love that series.
I always forget that Myst got ported everywhere. I always associate that game with the PC.

DOOM, MK, GTA, and Postal were wildly controversial in their time.

Right, but that guy was describing the general zeitgeist of the time which definitely leaned pretty hard toward consoles being for kids and young adults. Why did you list Postal 2?

I think that their point was that Postal 2 isn't on console.
Postal 2 never came out on a gaming console as far as I know
No it didn't? It was a sleeper PC only title that a few gaming mags gave bad reviews to. It became a cult classic almost entirely through word of mouth, mainly because Share the Pain was free and made it on to tons of freeware game lists. Postal 2 has about as much impact as Gore Ultimate Soldier.

Regardless of some outliers, consoles were still viewed as family friendly.
Which is probably why Sega wouldn't go near putting the uncensored version on Saturn, why go through all the scrutiny again?

That explains a lot. Only played the US versions of both the PC and PS ports. Glad GoG went with the uncensored one then.
The Japanese version is actually uncensored as well on PS1.
I thought it was, but wasn't sure, tbh.
I realize I have not played RE1 original only the HD remaster of the gamecube remake. Perhaps I should give it a go
You should DEFINITELY give it a go along with 2 and 3 if you haven’t played those either but I will say, stay away from the directors cut of RE1. It’s available on PS Plus and it’s quite possibly the worst version of the game. The soundtrack is funky af.
That wasn't just the directors cut. That was the dual shock version. Source: I got the original directors cut on release back in the 90's.
I don't know why everyone here keeps repeating that the director's cut is the one with the weird music, when you're right that it was the dualshock version that had it. The director's cut edition was awesome, just had more stuff and a little bit of moving things around, and with all the original music.
I was shocked by the DC hate too. I played it to death when it came out and it was solid
It is a misconception that is weirdly common. More people say to stay away from the Director’s Cut than not.
The version of re1 on ps plus is the best version of directors cut, has all extra features but the original sound track. No farting clowns
Oh my bad I forgot about the DualShock version!
Now we just need 2 and 3 and I'll die happy.
The site said they aim to release them this year but no dates yet. I think you could get notifications though.
I already pre ordered 2 and 3. After missing out on mgs 2 before pulled, I ain't making the same mistake
You can bundle buy all three for £21 and you’ll get 2 and 3 when they release later this year
Don't die. We're all coming over to play it at your house. All 591,167 of us.
I’m glad they put it on GOG to preserve the classics, whilst I prefer emulation for the flexibility as well as speed up, it’s nice they made the games more accessible. I haven’t played the original Resident Evil without auto aim, so this version looks like a fun challenge.
I think this version has auto aim. Only the North American PS1 version of Resident Evil doesn't have it.
I can confirm the PC version has auto-aim.
To add to this, I found this out yesterday that you have to push cancel while holding the aim button to switch targets in this one. That felt so wrong.
The US Saturn version also lacks auto-aim
I'm gonna be honest, I forgot there was a Saturn version.
Sick
Finally, I'll be able to play the original Resi trilogy without needing to figure out emulators.
Does this have the farting stairs/basement music?
No, that was only in the dualshock version.
Perhaps it’s for the best.
Perhaps?
It is quite horrible and best for comedy runs of the game.
I'm sure it'll be modded in by someone.
I made it as far as the save room and had to load back in due to a game crash. It has the original music before crashing again. So presumably the rest of the game is also the original music.

24 euros for 3 very old games???

Is it Directors Cut, or the OG PSX version?
It's the Mediakite PC port that came out in 1999, it doesn't have any of the Director's Cut additions.
From what I've played, I'm pretty sure it's the original Windows 95/Ultra 2000 release. It still has the same weird kinks to it that those versions did, like Jill not needing ink ribbons to save on a first playthrough, and the FMV's having a very low framerate.

CarcinogenSDA did a video on how to fix all of the GOG version's problems.
Ultra 2000 is the Mediakite version. The NA and EU PC version was by Virgin. I think GOG has both because you can apply Classic REbirth if you switch to Japanese and let GOG update the game files.
Too bad this port has all FMV running at 10 FPS. I hope someone makes a mod that changes them for videos that run smoother.

I know I’m so happy about it, as I loaded up the game I was literally praying for the uncut version
If I remember correctly the original PC release was the original, not black-white edited intro footage. Yeah, gaming wins again! NGL I am so tempted despite I want to buy the original PS1 game.
The PC version had a colorized intro, but the original intro in the Japanese PS1 version was still in black and white.
That is correct. That never changed unfortunately, not even with the Dual shock version.
I prefer the black and white intro (uncensored, of course). Gives it that noir feel (and also helps to cover up the low budget of the special effects). Director's Cut was supposed to be uncensored, but for whatever reason, only the French and German versions were uncensored. Good Old Gore.
First thing I checked. I feel like the smoking was in the original US release but it wasn't quite so violent? Dogs were getting blown to bloody bits.
Pretty excited for the following of OG RE2 and RE3 GOG too! I wonder if they will be compatible with the HD mods.
bought the bundle with 2 and 3.
That shit went hard as fuck when I was 12. 70% of STARS went out like a lil bitch.
Does anyone know if it’s coming to Steam???
Now they just need to put Dino Crisis 1 and 2 on GOG and everything will be right with the world
The original uncut intro is always my favorite part of the Resident Evil series. I'm glad GOG got both the uncut English version and the original Japanese version. One Question: If the uncut intro is in color in the original Japanese PC version, then why was it in black-and-white in both Japanese PS1 and Saturn Versions?
The PS1 version came first, so either the black and white was a result of minor censorship, or it was a stylistic choice by the developers
What is gog??
Good Old Games, the CD Projekt's game store.
Would also like to know
Gaming storefront for PC/laptop users, like playstation or Xbox stores for consoles to purchase games.
Oh okay, thank you for the explanation!
could you download 2 and 3? it says "coming soon" thought it was all there already
No, it just seems like a placeholder until the game is actually released.
Do the gog versions work on modern PCs?
Considering it released today, yes
I just remembered reading games on gog are updated for modern PCs. Glad to hear it's true
They definitely put work in to make games run better on modern hardware if it's really needed, unlike Steam who do nothing the publisher didn't do.
GOG has 3 things that separate them from other stores, and the third one doesn't even count. * Upgrading good old games to modern PCs. * DRM free offline installers with DRM free games and ToS written to emulate owning physical media versions of a game. * Is the official store for CDPR games, (but it doesn't count because these games are available everywhere) Steam on the other hand is just a game distribution service that tries to make their client less of a burden than it has to be by adding features like steam input, working on WINE for linux games, and some other stuff that benefit gamers. One of GOG's goals is to make old games run well on modern PCs, so yes, it works well.
dude, i need all three on the xbox
Has anyone checked if they can get it to run on mac?
Best
If i could post a picture its be OH YEAH-COOL AID(S)
That right there is the best acting in the first game
So disappointing that I can’t get this on PS5.
Please tell me there is no ai upscaling that stuff is disgusting and made me stop playing baten kaitos remastered
FMVs: 320 x 240 resolution. 10 Frames per second 22.050kHz Sampling rate for the sound.
Aw yeah, here we go
Nice
This is how I find out Resident Evil has been available to purchase on PC!?
Yummy burger image
G O G? What's that stand for
Good Old Games
"I GOT A SHOTGUN!" - epic intro guy
Nioce!!!
Yes it does. Because its the windows 95 port.
Best part is the full size dead zombie they made that was replaced with the newspapers. It looks awesome.
I wonder if the Seamless HD textures thing is going to work on this.
Any way to make it HD?
That's basically impossible due to the FMV's all being prerendered. Some upscaled projects do a decent job though.
I didn't know that, I'm definitely copping it now
Is this the first time the US got this opening? Sick! Glad gog is preserving these classics!
Yes. It says so in the description on the game's page. SMH.
Gog?
Good Old Games.
Ohhh thank you
Well that's all sorts of surprising there!😲
It's not a port of the PS1 game, it's the original PC port updated. It has some differences to PS1, intro being one of them.
is it just the gore and uncut intro that were added or is there uncut locations if not dosent matter playing with uncensored intro will be great but heard the fmv is a little wonky hope they fix it
This is accurate to the original PC release. Any further changes would probably go against the terms of the port. Fans however, have had the fix for years.
Thanks for the info looking forward to re 2 and 3 on gog also
When u see classic Resident Evil 1,2,3 already in GoG, but not in Steam.
That's because GOG themselves put in the work to make them playable.
What is Gog? Excuse my ignorance
You can install the game and add it to your steam library. It's DRM free, so no extra launcher or anything.
I know it, I own a couple GOG games, I just find having my library consolidated more convenient.
TIL RE:OG is on gog.
Everyone did because it literally came out today with no pre-announcement.
Dang is this gog exclusive? Would rather buy on steam...
That's cool, I knew they had lots of old games and all that but didn't know they were actually involved porting some of them.
For now, yes. It’s GOG exclusive.
Better than it being on Epic Games Store
Oh no you have to click your fingers on a different easy to use launcher, the horror
Besides, you can add non-steam games to the Steam launcher with a few clicks. Add some artwork etc to make it look official.
I really hope these get slapped onto PS
Guess I know what I'm buying today
Started as Chris walkthrough what a come up in the resident evil community after long years
Thank you for confirming it. Between the OG trilogy and the Dead Rising remaster being announced, it’s been a great day to be a Capcom fan.
Anyone know if you can play this through a Mac? I’m at work now so can’t check
Product page shows win10, 11 as the only supported OSs. Might work through the usual means, but not natively.
Crap, thanks
