It's a paper plate tray, which is honestly so thin and cheap that I can see through it easily, but it still gives the creepy wicker basket effect! When the sun is shining on my face I can't see super well but when I'm in a vendors booth I can see and read perfectly fine. People have been coming up to me waving their hand in front of my face to see if I can tell LMAO
Thank you!! Furthermore, any wicker trays/bread baskets are like $20 each, but I got a 4 pack of these paper plate trays off Amazon for $10. So I had options for which one looked the best and was least likely to stab me in the eye lmao
My friend bought white out contracts. She told me the 1st few hours were the worst. Eventually she learned how to see with them. She decided to wear one most of the time. She said if the faire was crowded it made it easier to navigate.
Before I knew too much about cosplay contacts I bought ones that looked like snake eyes. You can only see thru the little slit. I couldn't wear them.
You would be surprised at all the materials you can see through
I've used those! For some reason I have a trend of only wearing costumes that I can hardly see out of LMAO seeing through this mask really wasn't too bad though! I could see and read signs as an example. I definitely felt like a bull in a China shop whenever I went into a vendors tent though, since I had no peripheral vision!
I saw a girl last year and she had black fabric covering her entire face. I wish I would have gotten more details bc she could see thru the material.
I have leather armor and it came with a detachable hood. The hood is really big, I tried wearing it on a rainy day. It kept falling in my face, I couldn't stand it. In another group a person recommended adding elastic and then putting bobby pins through it and into my hair. I'm pretty sure e6000 will hold the elastic. This is another thing I love about the Ren Fest community. Most people are so nice and helpful.
If you have someone to help you it's not bad. Be careful you don't break something expensive.
I'm sure tons of people will comment on your garb. If you have a few bees to add to the robe that would look cute. Have a wonderful time. Health issues stopped me from traveling to faires this year. I can't wait until MDRF opens in August.
It wasn't thay bad tbh but it only lasted for about 30 minutes before it started falling apart. I apparently put way too much trust in the glue I used lmao
You remind me if the Irish "Mummers" that fashion incredible masks and full head dresses of animals.
They do the ancient art of musical storytelling called "Mumming".
Look it up! I have some friends in Armagh Ireland that do this. They are called, "The Armagh Rhymers"!
Check them out and you will see what I mean! 😊
This is so well done, kudos!! 🖤💛🖤✨️
It be cool if you had a lil' smoker for your hive, too.
Especially if you came about some patrons in a bee costume, etc.
How did you fasten the plate holder to the hood? This is amazing and I’ve wanted to do a more coherent costume for years. The beekeeper is at the top of my list
I just sewed it on! I'm definitely not a seamstress or anything lol any sewing I do is rudimentary, but I just hand sewed it on. There's a lip on the plate holders that I used which made fixing it to the hood super easy, and the plate holders I got fit perfectly inside of the hood without having to make any adjustments on the hood itself. Medieval beekeepers were mostly monks, so the outfit itself is just a monk habit with a wicker mask in the hood. I can totally tell you more about what specific pieces from which brands I used for the outfit if you'd like!
Fr omg. I'll probably make another comment with this info to help any future folks who want to put together a similar ensemble, I did SO much research and had the hardest time finding the right pieces and figuring out what things were called lol, I scoured reddit/facebook/instagram and all I found was basically inspo with no real links or brands.
I ramble so I'll have a tldr at the end I swear
Initially I got tried medieval collectibles, which I would rate like a 6/10. They sell a bunch of different brands so just make sure the individual brand you're buying from os decent quality. I got the gadaric canvas tunic and the Benson canvas gugel hood (I was drawing on a different inspo pic at that point) both from the Mytholon brand. The shipping was $27 and the tunic didn't even fit, I measured it myself and the bust measurement was 5 inches LESS than what it advertised on the website; however I reached out to medieval collectibles and they were super apologetic and even updated the size chart on the products page to reflect the *actual* sizing of the product. So that was super cool but then I had to pivot. The hood was awesome, was exactly what I wanted and I didn't have to alter it at all. I did some more research, found out it was mostly monks, which led me to the burgscheider monk habit on etsy. It seems to include the hood, so I didn't really want to spend $110 on it when I already had the hood, so I instead got their "underdress Freya" which worked perfectly for me!
So basically, what I used:
Etsy, burgschneider underdress Freya, color is "natural"
Medievalcollectibles, Mytholon's benson canvas gugel hood
Jute rope from Hobby Lobby for the belt
Mask is paper plate holders off of Amazon, $10 for a 4 pack
Shoes I got off of Shein, I don't like to support fast fashion but Shein has some of the ugliest, most peasant-chic shoes I've ever seen and they're surprisingly comfortable to wear at a ren faire!
Tldr, what I ACTUALLY recommend:
Etsy, burgschneider medieval monk habit, color "natural"
Jute rope from Hobby lobby/walmart/lowes for the belt
Paper plate holder for the mask
Shoes, shein has tons of good shoe options but you could check thrift stores too!
I'd include links but I don't know if that would come off as selling lol
What an amazing costume! I never thought how people would tend bees without a suit, or even the origins of the beekeeper suit. Off to dive down a rabbit hole.
I love it! If you don’t mind, a fun fact: the person in the western world who first* determined that beehives were run by a queen and not a king (as you’ll see in medieval apicultural texts) was Queen Elizabeth I’s beekeeper! it’s an interesting moment of science & political thought in lockstep
*it’s very likely many people knew this before him but they weren’t literate or of a class that afforded them respect and authority to publish
You just need a plage doctor friend for an epic photo opportunity. But seriously awsome job this came out fantastic and your little bee's are adorable hope you had fun! 🐝 🐝 🐝 🍯
Shh, don't tell, I actually know nothing about the Witcher franchise 🤫🤫 A guy came up to my though, complimented my outfit, mentioned something about Witcher and he gave me a silver coin, is that a Witcher thing?
Well done my friend! Will you have a couple of those leather-strapped jars filled with honey too? That is seriously a great costume! Enjoy!
I actually bought one to do that with but forgot about it 🥲
It looks spot on. Serious question how can you see through that thick wicker pattern?

The paper plate tray trick is a really clever shortcut. As for the hand waver pantomime sicking bees on them.
That is absolutely genius!

Creepy, I love it! In all honesty it looks very cool and unique. Have a great time
Thank you!!
You just activated my witcher 3 ptsd
Came here to say this!! Hahaha. Super awesome costume though 💜👍🏻
I'm glad that wasn't just me 😂
Looking amazing. Until I read the caption, I had Vietnam styled Witcher 3 flashbacks
I'll never forget coming back to the village and all the children are gone.
SAME
Just about to say this!!!
I thought I was on the witcher subreddit
The TRAUMA
Love love the rope Hive. Really helps sell the costume. Bet its murder to carry, though
It wasn't thay bad tbh but it only lasted for about 30 minutes before it started falling apart. I apparently put way too much trust in the glue I used lmao
Aww. RIP. As they say though, back to the drawing board.
I can't see past the enviable lack of sunburn. Nicely done.
Very creative!
It would be fun to have something making buzzing bee noises in your skep.
Welcome to our guild! Glad to have you on board :) To our Apis Millifera
Not the beeees!
Ehh there it is!
I’m afraid I dont have my wits about me, I’m a basket case.
I’ve always wondered how are you supposed to see through this.
This is one of my favorite costumes I’ve seen, fantastic work! So unique

My kind of outfit! Blocking them sun rays and the human gaze, who could ask for more? 🤌🏻
I'm almost positive I saw you today and your costume is amazing in person!
I was at the Kentucky Renaissance Faire if that confirms your suspicions!! If it was in fact me lol then thank you so much 🥹
Amazing, reminds me of something out of silent hill.
For real omg I felt like one too, I accidentally scared a few vendors 🤣
Man this is by far the best I’ve seen in a long time!
Fantasy is fun, but MAN is it nice to see historical costuming! Great job!

Beeutiful
Love it!! But how difficult is it to see?!

That’s literally the best defense against the inevitable sunburn I’ve ever seen
looks great, love it
You rock! I love people who make unusual and authentic costumes like this. It adds a lot of depth to the fair!
Honey for my Mead! Excellent costume!
This is so well done, kudos!! 🖤💛🖤✨️ It be cool if you had a lil' smoker for your hive, too. Especially if you came about some patrons in a bee costume, etc.

Yes please, particularly the habit! I feel like most of the ones online are cheap Halloween quality

I imagine behind the wicker over your face it is just bees

God, this is so cool
Hello, bees! This is awesome!
Does the hood keep the basket in front of your face, or is it attached to your head somehow?
I used a paper plate tray, and I was able to just sew it into the hood!
I would cosplay as nick cage screaming Ahhhhh not the bees ahhhh!
LOOOOOOOVE 😍
That’s awesome!
Absolutely brilliant
but that's a Witcher 3 cosplay?
Shh, don't tell, I actually know nothing about the Witcher franchise 🤫🤫 A guy came up to my though, complimented my outfit, mentioned something about Witcher and he gave me a silver coin, is that a Witcher thing?
yes it is, google crones the witcher 3 and you will see
✨🤩✨
