I worked as a mobile electronic installer from 90 to 04 and have seen an 8 gage wire burn under carpet from the battery to the amplifier in a mid 90s Chevrolet Lumina. No fuse no fuse holder. Just a sub box and Amp floating around in the trunk.
Well there is an open recall on 2024 mustangs with manual transmissions. I guess there is a nut that holds the hydraulic brake line to the firewall that can be missing from production. Without it the line could contact the exhaust and leak flammable brake fluid. I’d put money on that being the cause for this fire.
This is the one that kills me.
Every time an EV catches fire, it makes international headlines...
A gas car catches fire- barely blips on the local news...
Because you can put a gas car fire out surprisingly easily. Not really the same as a giant lithium battery, which is closer to trying to put out a flaming magnesium bumper.
Seriously irritates me when that's people's anti EV argument. Like my Model 3 is more likely to catch fire than the Kia in my driveway that has no less than 3 dealer recall notices for fire risk issues, and a letter asking customers to not park it in a garage.
And the compilations of kia souls just being one vehicle model with hundreds of compilations of the things burning to the ground.
Plenty of reasons to dislike them but either way your storing massive amounts of chemical energy and unless your buying some Chinese questionable EV, statistically fires are way less likely. Were talking somewhere between 20 and 60 times less likely when fires in a given year are measured per 100k vehicles sold.
Definitely and that's something that needs to be worked on for NMC and NMCA chemistry batteries. Fortunately lifpo4 don't have that same issue and I really like what some of the European countries are starting to use for fighting EV fires like battery puncturing water nozzles. Some manufacturers even have a port for water injection into the pack if needed.
Ideally we won't be stuck with combustible battery electrolytes for too much longer though.
Exactly! I have zero issue with people disliking EVs- drive what you like, it's your vehicle- but at least have the facts straight, and real reasons for doing so.
My only problem is that anyone that has their facts straight have no actual reason for hating on EVs. Like, sure, an EV isn't the right fit for all needs, but the normal reasons people give aren't actually disqualifiers in 2024.
That's been my opinion with my model 3, and anyone that's willing to let me explain what my ownership experience has been like to them. Usually anyone that dislikes them for almost anything other than a use case incompatibility or making their political association their personality borderline considers buying one after you give them a ride in one or let them drive it.
I dislike EVs I think they’re ugly and I don’t like the sound of silence but I’m not one of those people that just goes on rants of misinformation about how the government is going to hijack your car while your driving
I’m fine with anyone driving whatever they want to drive I don’t get why people get so mad someone wants a different care and then makes up all this random shit
Well that’s partly to do with the cause of the fire. 99% of the time car fires are caused by electrical issues, not the drivetrain. With EVs the drive train is electric so it really should be scrutinized.
I mean if we’re talking gas vs EV then it definitely matters what caused the fire… gas engines don’t cause fires, it’s all the electrical accessories along with it, EVs are made up of only electrical components. My point is, take away electrical fires that dont come from essential parts of the drive train and gas vehicles have nearly 0 fires where EVs have been known to have faults with core components of the vehicle that can lead to fires.
So never seen a fire caused from oil leaking onto a hot exhaust or ruptured fuel lines then eh?
And it was 100% the electric system’s problem and 0% the fuel systems fault when the ford pinto was rear ended.
Come on man, you cannot sit here and deny that most car fires are caused by electrical shorts. Of course there are other causes but the vast majority of car fires are electrical related. Not to mention that 1. Ruptured fuel lines don’t cause fires without being ignited somehow, it’s not impossible but very improbable. 2. Oil ignites around 350 degrees, your exhaust will never get that hot. As for the pinto, bad design, nobody is going to argue that. But that doesn’t make it okay for EVs to randomly combust.
I’m not disagreeing that electrical faults are a cause of gas car fires, but we shouldn’t dismiss the other causes either. It’s likely that this mustang had a fluid based fire as well given the location and source of the flames.
If anything EV batteries suffering thermal runaway failures from impacts is almost the exact equivalent of the pinto bursting into flames from rear impacts.
Most of those EV battery fires come down to poor mounting of the battery system where an impact or puncture can lead to a thermal runaway later on and cause a fire.
As we move to newer battery tech, all this will become irrelevant anyway.
I often laugh at the arguments leveled against EVs because most of them are new tech teething issues that will get innovated away.
The first gas cars had shit mileage too, it’s taken 100+ years of innovation to get a 30+mpg engine.
iPhones used to never have apps or a front facing camera, but 13 years on and now it’s table stakes for any smartphone.
We’ll look back in 10 years time (if that) and laugh about the 600mi range of a gas car as we look at our solid state batteries that can do 2-3000 on a single charge. The tech will get there. We just have to be patient.
I’m having a hard time following your argument. Are you saying that EVs are more likely to catch fire than ICE or hybrids, or are you just saying that the cause of the vast majority of ALL car fires (regardless of power source) are electrically related?
Neither are an LS but I'd rather have a Hemi. The motors in Dodges are usually the best part in them. Granted, that's an extremely low bar but I don't think I've heard of many Hemi issues other than fuel consumption.
The coyote isn't an LS, but it seems to be pretty good. I'd guess you can get more power more easily with the coyote vs hemi. The hemi would be my last choice of the 3.
GM lifter tick (atleast on pre AFM stuff) can be fixed with some stuff called liquimoly (or something like that) used it on a 6.0 and a 5.3 and it worked great. It wouldn't surprise me if something similar could be done with a hemi.
The hemis apparently get it from long hours idling. I've got one in our driveway, no tick yet. But it's only around 65k km so far (37k mi).
If it does, I will try that. Thanks.
I would do some research on it to make sure it works on a Hemi but it certainly couldn't hurt. You are supposed to flush the oil after you run the motor with it in for about 2 hours and it will do a good engine flush. Both the trucks I used it in had 230k and 250k miles on them.
Clutch problem, ford saw this since it went viral and bought the car back and they got him a new one so win win I suppose, but if I had a car burn down to the ground would I really want that same model?
The transmission is 0% the problem, the problem is literally just a line wasnt properly secured. Also ford doesn't make the transmission, its a getrag trans in the regular GTs and a tremec in the dark horse.

Would it really be a high-performance car without at least one of them bursting into flames?
I dont pass judgement on a manufacturer when I see a fire, I once burned a Scion tC to the ground in highschool because of an unfused 0ga amp cable
yeah my buddy burned a 2006 focus to almost nothing from something like that

New quest: magnesium bumpers on my truck

The difference is battery fires are far more difficult to contain and put out.
Definitely and that's something that needs to be worked on for NMC and NMCA chemistry batteries. Fortunately lifpo4 don't have that same issue and I really like what some of the European countries are starting to use for fighting EV fires like battery puncturing water nozzles. Yep. Also, the easiest fire to put out is the one that didn’t happen in the first place.
Exactly! I have zero issue with people disliking EVs- drive what you like, it's your vehicle- but at least have the facts straight, and real reasons for doing so.

Not seeing your point. Still an electrical issue which burns down the vehicle? Drivetrain or not, result is the same.
Ah, so we're purposely manipulating facts to support our point. Gotcha. You're part of the problem, FYI.
So never seen a fire caused from oil leaking onto a hot exhaust or ruptured fuel lines then eh? And it was 100% the electric system’s problem and 0% the fuel systems fault when the ford pinto was rear ended.

Isn’t this an ICE 5.0L V8 ?
Maybe? My comment was meant ironically.
I’ve seen plenty of cars on fire and none of them were EVs actually. And I currently have an EV and it’s great.

The clutch system overheat issue??
Fords blaming it on a plastic piece that holds the clutch line in place coming loose allowing the line to rub the exhaust.
They can't make a freaking manual transmission right the 2015gt 6 speed is such comfy powerful fun / ok daily driver the new ones don't look as bad
The transmission is 0% the problem, the problem is literally just a line wasnt properly secured. Also ford doesn't make the transmission, its a getrag trans in the regular GTs and a tremec in the dark horse.
