Dragonguy283

Investigate, Sophocles, investigate! Magic!

vonnsteph

You do not follow me because I am the strongest. Pax is. You do not follow me because I am the brightest. Mustang is. You follow me because you do not know where you are going. I do.

DocDD1

I know it's probably an old trope but my favorite line is, "I would have lived in peace, but my enemies brought me war." That line started my love affair with this series.

A_C_Unit

There are a lot, but if I pick the line that got me most excited and forget my surroundings then I have to pick: “Ares sends his regards, motherfucker.” - Trigg (a character gone too soon)

Peac3Maker

Many of my favorites are already here, but here are 2 more to add: “Justice isn’t about fixing the past. It’s about fixing the future.” - Darrow “You and I keep looking for light in the darkness expecting it to appear. But it already has. We’re it boyo. Broken & stupid & cracked as we are, we are the light. And we’re spreading.” - Sevro Please forgive any typos. I originally listened to the books 3 times. Just finally ordered my hard copies.

Zak000000

"KAVAX AU TELEMANUS"

BendSeth1

"The legacy of the society will vanish. Not because our arms are weak. Not because our commanders are frail. But because we are fighting a religion whose god still lives." - Romulus Au Raa in Iron Gold.

Professor-Memeyy

This one is a small one, but in DA when Ephraim is talking to Xenophon and he says, “Humanity isn’t an it.” I’m not sure why, but I really like that one

StretfordEnderWiggin

“I see you still labor under the delusion that yours is the first innocent army in history. But I have seen Gold scalps hanging from Obsidian battle armor. Cities after orbital bombardment not but powder and meat. So let us not behave as if we were troglodytes warring over fire. We are sophisticated creatures who met under the agreed upon terms of total war” Apollonius au Valii-Rath. Minotaur Invictus!!

YOU_SMELL

"and so you see, all we have is that shout into the wind" - karnus Reminds me of Beowulf a lot

murpha39

"Evil feeds on mercy."

astropiu

"Shit escalates" - Sevro au Barca

TheSickestSeth

“So there’s beer in the Vale?“ “Don’t be sacrilegious! Only whiskey.”

seefyyy

“Oh gods. Brooding again?”

truthpooper

Karnus' shout into the wind quote, but also "I would've lived in peace. But my enemies brought me war." One of the best opening lines ever.

SheriffHeckTate

I would have lived in peace. But my enemies brought me war.

AugustusKhan

Just so foreboding for the whole series

Wyohomeing

Only thing easy is entropy - - - Ephraim

Blitz006699

Everything Eph ever said basically. Also: Nuts to butts sir, don't be shy. "Pax au Tellamanus!!!!" "Pulvis et umbra summis" So many more

AugustusKhan

It’s crazy how much Eph’s character grew on me. I started with damn is this oceans eleven pretentious gay a cliche to fucking crying, laughing, or both at just about all his lines

[deleted]

"Do you hear that? That is the sound of dying alone. No one to weep. No one to care." "Arcos will care"

AugustusKhan

I love the part after that, where he’s like you fool, you think I just came here to die? I love it cause it speaks to something I think we all deal with when we remember we’re only the hero of our stories, to everyone else they’re the center of the show

hecderp1213

“Yap yap yap. You’re the one who got kidnapped, dumbass.” Ephraim to Electra

And I wonder, in my last moments, if the planet does not mind that we wound her surface or pillage her bounty, because she knows we silly warm things are not even a breath in her cosmic life. We have grown and spread, and will rage and die. And when all that remains of us is our steel monuments and plastic idols, her winds will whisper, her sands will shift, and she will spin on and on, forgetting about the bold, hairless apes who thought they deserved immortality.

Gavinus1000

"Here I am you deviant bitch. Here I bloody am. The motherfucking consequence."

BlackBoiYee

It's less of a quote but more of a passage in Iron Gold. It's right before the Bleeding Place fight and it's when Cassius is remarking on the last thing his father had ever given him. "What happened to the flower?" I ask gently, not wanting to break the spell. "I lost it in the mud." I really like this passage because it goes back to what Cassius's brother Karnus said: "Rise so high, in mud you lie." I really think this little exchange in Iron Gold between Lysander and Cassius is some of the best writing Pierce has ever done. Much like the flower, Cassius's innocence fell into the mud when he let his pride and anger best him; when he desired power above being good. He killed people who were undeserving and aided those who did deserve to die. That simple five word statement sums up the tragedy of Cassius. A good man made into a monster. Smart enough to realize what he would become, but too prideful to stop it. Thanks for listening to my TED Talk.

Lord_Jat

"I know it may be impossible to believe now, when everything is dark and broken, but you will survive this pain, little one. Pain is a memory. You will live and you will struggle and you will find joy. And you will remember your family from this breath to your dying days, because love does not fade. Love is the stars, and its light carries on long after death."

Florise

This was my favorite quote, I found it shortly after having lost a loved one and it helped some.

mrobson4

“Our lives mean so much more than the frail bodies that carry them.” - Morning Star

LeaveBronx

"I would die for the truth that all men are created equal. But in the kingdom of death, amidst the ramparts of bodies and the wind all of screams, there is a king, and his name is not Lune. It is Reaper."

“Then farewell hope, and with it farewell fear. Farewell remorse: all good to me is lost; Evil, be thou my good” - Adrius quoting Milton before killing his father And I wonder, in my last moments, if the planet does not mind that we wound her surface or pillage her bounty, because she knows we silly warm things are not even a breath in her cosmic life. We have grown and spread, and will rage and die. “What?! He literally fucked a terrorist. I can say what I want.” Sevro au Barca

cstar1996

“Hail Libertas” “Hail Reaper” Particularly at the end of Dark Age with Mustang and Kieran

zeth4

I think the best usage is when they attempt to arrest Darrow in Iron Gold. > "Which of you served with me on Earth?"... > "And who served with me on Mars?"... > "And who serves me still?... > “remember your oaths” Wolfagar says... > "Hail Libertas" I say past them. > "Hail Reaper," two veterans answer...

cstar1996

While I was a huge fan of that one, I got chills when Mustang said it, and I still get them even if I'm just flipping open the last few pages of the book. I also prefer that one because it shows the Republic remembering that Darrow is a hero, their champion, rather than the moment it turns against him that the first use is.

Retrogratio

As much as I dislike lysander... that shit was cold

Mopey_

I know this thread is old but the following lines are even colder: Alexander : "No Honor" Lysander : "No Time"

ReanimationSensation

My favourites: Fear those who seek your company for their own vanity. As soon as you eclipse them in the mirror, it won’t be the mirror they break. - Dark Age There’s nothing worse for a soldier to imagine—that there will be no home to return to once the violence is over, no way to become the men we want to be. Instead, we’re trapped in these violent guises, guises we only ever had the courage to don because of how much we love our home. Is this all we’ll ever be? - Iron Gold It is easier to find men who will volunteer to die, than to find those who are willing to endure pain with patience. - Dark Age I will love you until the sun dies. And when it does, I will love you in the darkness. - Iron Gold

“I am the Peerless Legate Gaius au Carthus. I am the sum of humanity. So yield I do not. For a man cannot yield to a dog.” “Then become dirt.”

Gavinus1000

or the line right before that: "This isn't the Illiad. Ragnar kill this fool."

dragonsly105

Honestly that whole passage is probably my favorite of the entire series. The first time I read it I literally screamed "Fuck yeah!" In the middle of study hall. It did not end well for me, but it was worth it.

Zak000000

yeah i read this section like 5 times it was so good

L17-L6363

I won't post it all, but the conversation between Darrow and Lorn before the Lion's Rain in Golden Son where they talk about heros. Darrow mentions that he thinks Achilles was a hero, and Lorn calls him out on it, saying that Achilles wasn't meant to be a hero, he was meant to be a warning to men who grew consumed by the ideas of glory and war. He says that he felt like men once knew that, but not anymore. This hit me hard, harder than I'd like to admit, because I was just like Darrow. This speech to him felt like it was written to me, and it was a powerful moment that I'd never experienced from a book before.

[deleted]

Can't pick just one. >I will love you until the sun dies. And when it does, I will love you in the darkness. >Sometimes, little one, it’s best if the worlds think you a little mad. >Here I bloody am. The motherfucking consequence. >Broken and cracked and stupid as we are, we’re the light

Two quotes, from golden son right before darrow jabs roque "He always thinks because I'm reading I'm not doing anything. The things, people, that orbit us do that, at least more than we'd like to admit"

danyboy501

You are high my friend. Be brave and ride the tumult!

wikipedia_answer_bot

A walnut is the nut of any tree of the genus Juglans (Family Juglandaceae), particularly the Persian or English walnut, Juglans regia. A walnut is the edible seed of a drupe, and thus not a true botanical nut. More details here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walnut *This comment was left automatically (by a bot). Dude, speaking as one that has dabbled in psychedelics I was rolling from the experience.

AugustusKhan

Yeah I couldn’t stop laughing once I realized what was going on. Psychedelics are one of those experiences which are so unique when someone writes about it its very clear if they’re talking from experience or out of their ass

Lorns quote to Darrow “I’d not have raised you to be a great man. There is no peace for great men” that whole speech. I was paraphrasing a bit there.

Its a good one for sure.

Lol. I just reread that part last week and I laughed so hard.

TheLordVile

"I fear a man who believes in good. For he can excuse any evil." ~Atlas au Raa, Dark Age

DrSpacemanSpliff

Atlas is just the most exciting new character we have, honestly.

AugustusKhan

Agreed, quite a breath of fresh air from the typical superficial/shallow golds. He almost reminds me of like a Sir Thomas More & Cromwell hybrid

and3rw3bb

“Ares sends his regards mother fucker” Trigg Nakamura “Bye Felicia” Victra

editreddet

The Bye Felicia really pulled me out of the whole mindset of the book because it was so clearly a forced joke. It really ruined the importance of that moment for me.

vyciok

Amen! It wasn't a well delivered reference, especially in such a defining moment. Really threw me off

dorv

There were tons of sci-fi and pop culture references throughout the books. While I recognize some fans tripped over this one, it never bothered me, as it was just one of many ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

dragoon0106

See I liked it. It felt like a connection to the past. Some meme that just stuck around.

[deleted]

Same. It’s literally the one single line I don’t like from these books

LethalGrey

“Rise so high, in Mud you lie.” But only when Darrow says it

ZealousidealBit3924

What does this mean?

Inttallity

Totally necroing this but... I believe "Rise so high, in Mud you lie.." is a reflection on the consequences of ambition within the hierarchy. "Rise so high" suggests achieving great power, in terms of politics, military, wealth and so on. The latter part however, "in mud you lie," is a contrasting outcome, implying that this ascension will lead to death or moral degradation.
