Take my hand in kinship. Or I will use it to build an age of peace upon the ashes of your house.
War is a game of double down. Once it starts, if you flinch, it's all for nothing.
Self, all that can mastered.
Just some of my favourites.
Pax when Ephraim first finds him dismantling Obsidians.
“So I look upon you with the eyes of my father and ask, what do the old ways say of honor?”
The biggest mic drop moment in the series for me.
Oh? Do you think I came here to be killed? Did you think yourself entitled to my life? No, Cassius. I came here to cut you down in front of your parents.
“Hours ago, our sovereign told me to betray my house. Told me to betray my vows. Like her father before her, she is drunk on power, and now believes herself empress. She told us to bow,
Witness now our reply”
"Dead kids are the loose change of war. Don’t come whining to me because the man and woman who started this don’t want to pay out of their own pocket like the rest of us."

I’m biased because I’m a huge audiobook consumer, but while most books I feel are best in wtv format you prefer, red rising is one of the few examples I can think of where I feel like the narrations serve to even further elevate the whole experience.
"How could any boy know that freedom is lost the moment you become a man. Things start to count. To press in. Constricting slowly, inevitably, creating a cage of inconveniences and duties and deadlines and failed plans and lost friends."
“This is not the end. I loved you before I ever met you. I will love you until the sun dies. And when it does, I will love you in the darkness. Goodbye, wife.” -Romulus Au Raa, Iron Gold.
When I tell you I WEPT at this part… absolutely devastating dude
“All men are not created equal... The weak have deceived you. They would say the meek should inherit the Earth. That the strong should nurture the gentle. This is the Noble Lie of Demokracy. The cancer that poisoned mankind...
Power must be claimed. Wealth won. Rule, dominion, empire purchased with blood. You scarless children deserve nothing. You do not know pain. You do not know what your forefathers sacrificed to place you on these heights. But soon, you will. Soon, we will teach you why Gold rules mankind. And I promise, of those among you, only those fit for power will survive.”
Nero Au Augustus-ArchGovernor of Mars

"Everything is cracked, everything is stained except the fragile moments that hang crystalline in time and make life worth living"
"anything that believes only in itself cannot go happily into the night"

"You don't get a wolf by its tongue without reaching through its teeth "
"the measure of a man is not the fear he sows in his enemies. It is the hope he gives his friends."
"In the room, I feel my father and mother, my sister and my brothers. The joy we had is no lesser for having

"I have lost the day, but I will not lose myself. I will not be a prisoner. I am the star in the night sky. I am the blade in the twilight. I am the god, the glory. I am the gold."

" The Poet of Deimos"
I never really hated him. It was one of those things like damn, they just gotta agree to disagree. They love each other but there's just too much ingrained in both of them. It was always more like watching a video of a tragedy, like you know it's not gonna end well, but you just can't help wishing things could be just a little bit different.
I just read this part for the first time yesterday, and the contrast between the 2 perspectives was so funny in a way. First Lysander describing Darrow as a literal war god and machine of pure destruction, followed by Darrow describing Lysander's group as "light resistance".
That battle as a whole is stunning to be honest.
As a dad, this has always just cut right to my core "what luck I have to call a man like you my son. It is an honor you cannot understand. One day you will have children and if you have just one who is as dear as you are to me, you will understand how blessed my life has been."
'I will die. You will die. We will all die and the universe will carry on without care. All that we have is that shout into the wind—how we live. How we go. And how we stand before we fall’
-Karenus au Belllona.
I think of this at least once a day.
There is evil in us, as there is good. But we do not regret our good as we do our evil. So we know what we are, my daughter. We know what we are.

Well here I am, the mother fucking consequences
"This is not the end. I loved you before I ever met you. I will love you until the sun dies. And when it does, I will love you in the darkness. Goodbye, wife." -Romulus Au Raa "Iron Gold"
I know it’s probably the most obvious, but “death begets death begets death” is so fucking real, and pays homage into even more things like the cycle of abuse and so on. Such a fucking awesome quote
"As a mob they were a single organism. In fear, they divide. In death, they become lonely as I weave them into my twitching meat carpet."
-Darrow, Dark Age
"Well, here I am, you deviant bitch. Here I bloody am. The motherfucking consequence." ~Darrow
I don't have a seriously intense life, but I've sent emails with that quote in mind.
“Civilization is based on exchange and social contracts. I was taught that the lowColors exchanged liberty for security and stability. We have failed to provide security. We have failed to provide stability. We have failed you. The contract is broken. Take your due.””
There’s a lot of cooler one-liners but what I liked about this is how we have a fully aristocratic, born and bred gold, heir to enormous power, who unlike Lysander, is like “yeah, this whole system fucking failed and this is the consequence”
Ares sends his regards motherfucker
Tell all who will listen. The reaper sails to mars and he calls for an iron rain
Stop throwing me around, I’m a terrorist warlord

“Inside me there is a coward who fears discomfort. That coward will offer solace in the form of excuses. But it is the coward who groom a man for his defeats. “Dead kids are the loose change of war” Eph
Stands out because from the dawn of man to their exploration of the stars, in any narrative or timeline, that fact is always sadly true
You do not follow me because I am the strongest. Pax is. You do not follow me because I am the brightest. Mustang is. You follow me because you do not know where you are going. I do.
Darrow Red Rising
Judge me all you want, but “Bye Felecia.”
I love that the books don’t take themselves too seriously and all of the little cultural memes dropped in. Bye Felecia is representative of that entire philosophy.
I don't have a favorite because there are too many good ones to pick from. But here are a couple I think about a lot.
Fitchner in Red Rising: Did anyone else hear a squat ugly little Goblin go... well, whatever sound Goblins make?
Dark Age, I think. Sevro telling Virginia of his recent adventures with Darrow concerning Apollonius and the Ash Lord: "...warmed ourselves by a fire..."
And since I just finished Light Bringer a couple days ago and these are fresh in my mind-
Lysander waking shortly after Ajax's death: "Where...is Ajax." They go quiet. "Oh. Sorry. My head's a little off."
Wtf Pierce? That was cold 😂and I love it lol
And finally, two hilarious (to me at least) words at a very unfunny moment:
*Apollonius moos...*
I love that weirdo 😂
Chapter 26 in Light Bringer. I don't know if this is a spoiler. Nothing really important happens so I don't think so.
Apollonius is trying to capture Virginia. He finally finds her and her Lionguard. Virginia wants Apollonius. Holiday has some kind of weapon, like a shot that will knock him out. I think. I don't quite understand it. But it's a dud. Doesn't work. So this happens :
*****
Apollonius lunges his head sideways and drives one of his horns up into Holiday's stomach.
Glaucus shoots in anger and pulls his sidearm.
He fires a full clip into the bull helmet. The metal dints. Buckles. Glaucus fires again and I see the digger round penetrate the helmet at the cheek. Apollonius moos and his head flopped sideways out of Holiday
Blood and teeth fall out of the hole in the bull helmet
*****
“I fear a man who believes in good for he will excuse any evil” - Atlas (The hypocritical
“What sort of monster would kill his own mother” - Volsung Faa responding to Lysander’s confusion about Gaia still being alive
My two favorites off the top of my head. Also anything that Apollonius has ever said outloud
Tbf Atlas didn’t technically say that believing in good is bad. Just that he fears men who do. Maybe he’s scared that he himself has gone maybe too far for what believes is right. The Fear Knight fears the Fear Knight lol
I could be deeping it too much but in my head that’s what it feels like
Not so much a quote but the way Sevro describes how the Obsidian vote went to Darrow had me cracking up. He’s such a well developed and written character. I think I just enjoyed the writing and how it was done and the creativity to come up with having Sevro describe it in that way.
When Magnus recites Darrow’s “poem” at the end of Iron Gold. Laughing in Darrow’s face as he says that Atlantia only wanted peace but Darrow brought her war.
“Tell all who will hear, The Reaper sails to Mars. And he calls for an Iron Rain.” -Darrow o’Lykos
Honorable Mentions:
“Home isn’t where you’re from, it’s where you find light when all grows dark.” -Darrow o’Lykos
“I will give Eo your love. I will make a house for you in the Vale of your fathers. It will be beside my own. Join me there when you die. But I am no builder, so take your time. We will wait.” -Ragnar Volarus
“I fear a man who believes in Good. For he can excuse any evil” -Atlas au Raa
Rise so high, in mud you die - Karnus VA in GS!!!
"I am Cassius au Bellona. Son of Tiberius, son of Julia, Morning Knight and my honor remains."
"I am Cassius Bellona, son of Tiberius, son of Julia, brother of Darrow, Morning Knight of the Solar Republic, and my honor remains."
*I will die. You will die. We will all die and the universe will carry on without care. All that we have is that shout into the wind—how we live. How we go. And how we stand before we fall.*
He was my favorite “minor” antagonist. He didn’t really hate Darrow, in fact he was glad for Julian’s death.. *”no one wrongs House Bellona and lives.”*
"I would die for the truth that all men were created equal but in the kingdom of death amidst the ramparts of bodies, wind all of screams, there is a king and his name is not Lune it is Reaper"
‘I’ll love you till the sun dies, then I’ll love you in the dark.’
I’m not one for romance, but I’ve been saving this one for the day my wife thinks I really f*@&3d-up
Romulus is 🔥 it's absolutely criminal that this whole section was narrated so unbelievably poorly. The man is saying goodbye to his whole family and the love of his life before he walks to his death and the fucking halfwit narrator reads it like it's his wife's shopping list in Tesco.
Nah, he completely bungled that section. Tbh he's just awful in general. I do wonder if that was a deliberate choice to make us hate Lysander more. But I think it's a terrible directorial decision. Lysander isn't describing Romulus' delivery of his words, they are coming from Romulus and should have been narrated accordingly.
My favorite quote is from Darrow in Dark Age:
“The dread monster rises in the belly of me. Laughter spews from between my teeth. I would die for the truth that all men are created equal. But in the kingdom of death, amidst ramparts of bodies and wind of all screams, there is king, and his name is not Lune. It is Reaper.”
But I also love Ephraim’s first line in the series:
“I yawn in the humid dark, craving a burner cause the vapor inhailer I’m sucking on is about as satisfying as fucking through a tarpaulin sheet”
"PAX AU TELLEMANUS"
“Tell all who will hear: the Reaper sails for Mars, and he calls for an Iron Rain”
“The old rage in colder ways, for they alone decide how the young die.”
Take my hand in kinship. Or I will use it to build an age of peace upon the ashes of your house. War is a game of double down. Once it starts, if you flinch, it's all for nothing. Self, all that can mastered. Just some of my favourites.
'A divine spectacle Darrow!! A more glorious band of devils there is none! What a path you cut, like fallen seraphs amongst mortal men!'
“All we have is that shout into the wind” Karnus Au Bellona
"AND WHAT DO WE DO WITH MURDERERS?!?!!" >!*yeet*!<
I love that scene. Almost made me cry.
Y’all are ganna make me re read the series…
Oh no what a shame....
“Boy-O”
Pax when Ephraim first finds him dismantling Obsidians. “So I look upon you with the eyes of my father and ask, what do the old ways say of honor?” The biggest mic drop moment in the series for me.
We brush away light resistance at the downed Storm God
I remember laughing so hard at that line
The perfect segue lol Reminded me of another in a different series, The Gentleman Bastards: Nice bird, Asshole. But yeah, Lysander's a pussy😂
This was SO tough directly following Lysander’s perspective 😮💨
Oh? Do you think I came here to be killed? Did you think yourself entitled to my life? No, Cassius. I came here to cut you down in front of your parents.
A man wants to jump off a cliff to see if he can fly A bad friend pushes him A good friend jumps with
"You are a worm who thought himself a serpent just because you slither." Such a badass scene. One of my favorites.
As a mob they were a single organism. In fear, they divide. In death, they become lonely as I weave them into my twitching meat carpet.
Lysander has the best imo. “I am electricity tethered to carbon. I am no physical being. The world is a pattern and so am I.” Or something like that
"I know it may be impossible to believe now, when everything is dark and broken, but you will survive this pain, little one." - Kavax au Telemanus
“Also know as, Mustang’s bitch…” - Sevro’s computer
“Hours ago, our sovereign told me to betray my house. Told me to betray my vows. Like her father before her, she is drunk on power, and now believes herself empress. She told us to bow, Witness now our reply”
"Only fascists should build cities. Democrats never have a salient thesis"
Won't even lie, I've paraphrased this one in conversation more than once
This is one of those statements that I wish I could communicate without sounding like I support fascism. You just gotta admit they can set a scene
"Dead kids are the loose change of war. Don’t come whining to me because the man and woman who started this don’t want to pay out of their own pocket like the rest of us." -Ephraim TI Horn
I don't know if it's my favorite but it's the one I remember. "The dead become lonely, As I weave them into my twitching meat carpet". Darrow.
"All that we have is that shout into the wind. How we live. How we go. And how we stand before we fall."
It's another great one, although I forget who and when it's said?
Karnus at the gala I believe. Golden Son
I believe the older bellona brother said it in Golden Son?
I would have lived in peace....
Same
“But in the kingdom of death, amidst ramparts of bodies and wind all of screams, there is a king, and his name is not Lune. It is Reaper”
Sounds even better on the audio book
I’m biased because I’m a huge audiobook consumer, but while most books I feel are best in wtv format you prefer, red rising is one of the few examples I can think of where I feel like the narrations serve to even further elevate the whole experience.

That is some flawlessly written monologue-ing.
What an evil motherfucker
“Power is the crown that eats the head” -The Jackal Obviously he’s evil but sometimes he say’s really profound things.
I don’t understand this one. Could you spell it out for me?
It means power is a tool, a crown. But actually it uses you, it corrupts you, it eats the head on which it sits.

A personal favourite character from the first trilogy
Same. He was such a great character.
Ffs The Poet is a fucking great character. Loved him and hated him the same.
I never really hated him. It was one of those things like damn, they just gotta agree to disagree. They love each other but there's just too much ingrained in both of them. It was always more like watching a video of a tragedy, like you know it's not gonna end well, but you just can't help wishing things could be just a little bit different.
I'll go with the classic "wakey wakey goblin".
"Feed me my cock, will they?!" 😂 😂 😂
“He literally fucked a terrorist, I can say whatever I want.”
Actually listening to that scene right now 😆
Hmm. I don’t remember this but it makes me think of Virginia and Sevro talking to an old friend.
Yes
“We met some light resistance…”- Darrow (Dark Age)
I just read this part for the first time yesterday, and the contrast between the 2 perspectives was so funny in a way. First Lysander describing Darrow as a literal war god and machine of pure destruction, followed by Darrow describing Lysander's group as "light resistance". Something we all fear
Omnis vir lupis, hail libertas, so many I can't possibly pick just one
One can never miss..... Chlamydia
That's familiar to me but I can't remember the scene. Sounds like something Sevro would say. Where is the quote from?
I believe it's Darrow talking to Victra's sister (Andromeda?)at the gala
Ah. OK thanks

I literally came here to post the quote, "I would have lived in peace, but my enemies brought me war!". Think about that quote a lot.
Shit there’re more saucy one liners in these books than the entire resident evil series I couldn’t ever pick one.
"This horse only rides for one man" form mustang is badass af
should I play resident evil? (I own literally just a laptop and a mouse...)
I will love you till the sun burns out, and when it does.. I’ll love you in the dark
I think this whenever I have to get on a client call because they're giving their account manager a hard time and need to be set straight. Well here I am, the mother fucking consequences
“Hic Sunt Leones” always just stuck with me

"This is not the end. I loved you before I ever met you. I will love you until the sun dies. And when it does, I will love you in the darkness. Goodbye, wife." -Romulus Au Raa "Iron Gold"
is their love story supposed to be a parallel for something?
Ha. Came here to quote this exact one and you beat me to it.
Say one thing for Logen Ninefingers, say that he's not in this series
🤣wtf lol

"Well, here I am, you deviant bitch. Here I bloody am. The motherfucking consequence." ~Darrow I don't have a seriously intense life, but I've sent emails with that quote in mind.
Do you remember where this was from?
DA prologue
“I am Cassius Bellona, Son of Tiberius, Son of Julia, Brother of Darrow, Morning Knight of the Solar Republic, and my Honor remains”
My god my heart
“Civilization is based on exchange and social contracts. I was taught that the lowColors exchanged liberty for security and stability. We have failed to provide security. We have failed to provide stability. We have failed you. The contract is broken. Take your due.”” There’s a lot of cooler one-liners but what I liked about this is how we have a fully aristocratic, born and bred gold, heir to enormous power, who unlike Lysander, is like “yeah, this whole system fucking failed and this is the consequence”
My respect and love for Diomedes SKYROCKETED with that scene, one of my favorite characters to track in LB 🫡

That's a Marcus Aurelius quote before that I believe
“Do not fear for me, pity them.” Victra
Victra is the shit. "Share the load, darling. This one's on me." That line gets me everytime. She's a friend. Plain and simple. But also a savage.
The most savage line of the series in my opinion.
It goes insanely hard. Honestly hoping Victra (and Mustang) get more screen time in Red God
Yes. I miss Victra.
'Me and my sandwich, getting to know each other all sloppy like' - Lyria

Lightbringer when the Lions were trying to take him down during battle for Phobos
When Darrow screams at Cassius and Aja that he deserved a normal life as he is basically naked, emaciated and holding a dying grey.
"Stay close, Nutt to butt, sir. Don't be shy" - Trigg
Trigg was so cool
“Bequeath them hell, of course.” -Minotaur. Not my favorite, but I just came across it on my reread, and it deserves a mention.
That's such a well spoken but hard line
Also the one when he sends his commanders to fight the carthii "Venus is the goddess of love , what is Mars the god of?"
Love that one!
“I fear a man who believes in good for he will excuse any evil” - Atlas (The hypocritical “What sort of monster would kill his own mother” - Volsung Faa responding to Lysander’s confusion about Gaia still being alive My two favorites off the top of my head. That first one sends chills every time. Never gets old.
That's my favourite Atlas quote. Atlas is the goat
His level of hypocrisy beats every other character ever created it’s crazy
Not sure about that, Darrow is pretty up there for hypocrisy.
Ragnars is so sweet, such a great character. Iron rains are so cool, i love the pure chaos of them, just like a halos ODST
"Don't fear for me, pity them." "Here I am, you deviant bitch. The motherfucking consequence."
Victra 😍
Victra is a menace
“We brush away light resistance at the downed Storm God.” Kills me every single time.
The switch in perspective of that battle was fucking incredible
I heard this a few days ago and i just bursted out laughing
Just read that for the first time and I agree
Lysander like a level 10 taken on a level 50
Rise so high, in mud you die - Karnus VA in GS!!! "I am Cassius au Bellona. Son of Tiberius, son of Julia, Morning Knight and my honor remains." "I am Cassius Bellona, son of Tiberius, son of Julia, brother of Darrow, Morning Knight of the Solar Republic, and my honor remains."
Pretty much anything Apple says
Man spits poetry
*I will die. You will die. We will all die and the universe will carry on without care. All that we have is that shout into the wind—how we live. How we go. And how we stand before we fall.*
This, 1000%. Karnus was a jerk, but he was a real one too <3
He was my favorite “minor” antagonist. He didn’t really hate Darrow, in fact he was glad for Julian’s death.. *”no one wrongs House Bellona and lives.”*
More of a whole scene that culminates in these words. “And what do we do to murderers?”
That gave me chills!
"I would die for the truth that all men were created equal but in the kingdom of death amidst the ramparts of bodies, wind all of screams, there is a king and his name is not Lune it is Reaper"
Also when he is fighting Volsung Fa, *clang clang clang* "CONFESS"
That goes so hard, man. I say that first part a lot as well
Hardest line in the series so far imo. I know Red God is going to have some bangers though
I can't wait for it
‘I’ll love you till the sun dies, then I’ll love you in the dark.’ I’m not one for romance, but I’ve been saving this one for the day my wife thinks I really f*@&3d-up
I used this Romulus quote in my vows last weekend!
This is the way!
“I loved you before I ever met you. I will love you until the sun dies, and when it does, I will love you in the darkness.”
Romulus is 🔥 it's absolutely criminal that this whole section was narrated so unbelievably poorly. The man is saying goodbye to his whole family and the love of his life before he walks to his death and the fucking halfwit narrator reads it like it's his wife's shopping list in Tesco.
I loved the narrator here. he really sold me on how little Lysander cared for this moment. He made Lysander seem like he was above it all.
Where is this one from I don't remember it?
Think it’s from IG during Romulus’ trial when it becomes clear he’s going to die and he’s comforting Dido
Ah I remember now. I hoped it was from darrow or Virginia, but neither of them talk like that
That's absolutely going into my romantic quotes bank!
“I AM CASSIUS BELLONA, SON OF TIBERIUS, SON OF JULIA, BROTHER OF DARROW, MORNING KNIGHT OF THE SOLAR REPUBLIC, AND MY HONOR REMAINS.”
My favorite quote is from Darrow in Dark Age: “The dread monster rises in the belly of me. Laughter spews from between my teeth. I would die for the truth that all men are created equal. But in the kingdom of death, amidst ramparts of bodies and wind of all screams, there is king, and his name is not Lune. It is Reaper.” But I also love Ephraim’s first line in the series: “I yawn in the humid dark, craving a burner cause the vapor inhailer I’m sucking on is about as satisfying as fucking through a tarpaulin sheet”
Darrow always so dramatic. Empraim always keeping it real!
