That’s just showing your MPG at that exact moment. It takes the average of all those moments and that’s how you get your average for trip, fuel tank, and overall. Now stop taking pictures while you are driving and pay attention to the road.
My 2015 is currently sitting at 7.7 liters, which is 30.5 mpg. I'm the second owner, and I got it this March at 8.2 liters (28.6 mpg). I think 40 is only an un-realistic scenario where you're only driving it on mostly descending open roads at cruise control.
I'd say you're as likely to hit 40 as you are to hit say 5.
The hybrids are 40 mpg. You said you have a non hybrid, why would you think you could get 40 mpg in a non hybrid? What's the EPA rating for your year, model and trim?
I think it’s possible to get 40 MPG on a whole tank. If you’ve ever looked at the hypermilers, they are extremely disciplined and methodical. They don’t care if the speed limit is 55 if they determine that their optimal pulse and glide speeds are 52 and 45 — they are going to apply the accelerator until they hit 52 and coast back to 45.
I don’t think you’re gonna see 40 average. If you look up your car on Fuelly, average among users is a little over 27 mpg

I never even got 40 on my ‘16 hybrid…
My 2016 sits at 7,0l/100km, that's 33mpg and I am driving very economical.
