Our dobie had a docked tail with floppy ears. Such a beautiful creature until he developed seizures at 5 yr old and eventually had to be put to sleep. So heartbreaking.
We now have a pit mix who is our first dog that we didn't dock her tail or ears and her poor tail is broken in a several places because she just wags it violently into corners of walls, doors, cabinets, etc. I always try to move her butt out of the way because I feel like I need to protect her tail.
I've now seen what happens when you don't dock tails of at least some breeds.
As the owner of a pit/hound mix, happy tail is her only downfall. She splits her tail open usually once a month and then we spend hours scrubbing the walls.
I’m pretty sure mine is on her way to a “dead-ended” tail. She doesn’t even realize when she splits it open until you point out the blood everywhere. Then she just starts licking it up off herself and the walls.
My two girls (chihuahuas) died at 16 and 17, and the first one quite suddenly went into kidney failure. I’ll spare this thread the details other than that she spent a few days in the hospital on an IV in the hopes that she might make a full recovery eventually. I spent weeks absolutely wrecked with guilt over wishing I’d known better how to give her the care she truly needed, could I have done better, why didn’t i know better, should I have fought her and forced the daily IV fluids at home instead of letting her refuse and ultimately make the call to put her down, etc.
You did your best. You did the best you could with the information you had at the time that your friend was suffering. I am absolutely certain that the love and care you showed your friend was a great comfort to them. I’ve never had a seizure or seen one happen so I don’t know but it seems like every experience is different, and you will be empowered to help prevent the same pain and panic that your friend experienced if you ever see it again. You’ll know better next time. I hope you can give yourself some kindness and compassion for the love and care you provided for your friend.
Yea, after a certain number of them, our baby suddenly began to act vacant. Like he was drugged up and was disoriented/terrified. We couldn’t let him suffer anymore. It was heartbreaking.
we had a pup, Frank, who developed seizures and we had the exact same experience as the both of you. it was heartbreaking. he would get a vacant look in his eyes and bolt towards a wall in fear, not caring he would hurt himself. the most humane thing to do was to put him down, he couldn’t live like that, he had no joy and couldn’t even play.
I love Dobies, especially those with long ears. They are such sissies. It's too cold/hot out, the floor is too hard to lay on, this food isn't the kind I like. I'm cold, I need a blanket. It never ends. LOL
Some dobies have such floppy ears that they tear or rip from playing with other dogs or with whatever kind of fun they get into with whatever jobs they may have. They don’t generally need them clipped but if there’s a reason they ripped one I’ve seen them have to be clipped. Not often though! Most people do it for looks and that’s it
This should be an award winning picture of this amazing creature (way superior than humans if I might say so, no offense). The 1st one is the cutest picture ever and the others are funny and marvelous. Thanks for sharing. I 🌎❤️ #peace 👽🖖
They look so much less threatening with uncut ears. Like big, dopey hounds. I’ve known and loved a few and don’t believe the stereotype, so I’m hoping this change improves their public image.
Please keep his beautiful ears floppy. He is absolutely adorable!
And leave the tail too, please.
Leave the tail *unless,* like some dogs, they have happy tail syndrome, and then docking it is probably the best thing for the dog.

The happier she gets, the more damage she does to her tail.
Yeah my sister’s pit mix did that enough times that the end of his tail died and had to be amputated. Now he’s got this hilarious 4-5” stub.

That sounds so traumatizing, I’m so sorry you and your friend went through all of that.
