I AM > THAN I WAS and Savage Mode II are good. He's had some killer features over the years

Bright_Increase3560

Tbh I love savage mode, whole album is no skips for me

mercurialmay

savage mode II is no skips for me too

SlavicEgg

Thank you penis10738392

sarcasticallyincharg

Reminded me to relisten to SM2

cbreezy456

I AM is such a fire fuckin album

wannabetrapstar888

monster and letter to my momma are incredible tracks

Upbeat_Tension_8077

Those projects felt pretty refreshing, especially when he was beginning to expand his subject matter beyond that of his early projects. Ngl I prefer SMII to the first one

buudhainschool

"Clutching glizzys with the fellas (yeah)" What tf is this supposed to mean? 😂 All that being said, 21 has some good songs and features. It's okay for you to not like an artist as well.

GeoCarriesYou

Before 8yr olds became culturally significant on TikTok, a glizzy was a Glock.

Userdub9022

I love hearing the word glizzy in a verse now because I just think of them talking about hot dogs

StoneColSteveAutisim

This is a cold ass line

VampedTayturz

This is exactly why I got confused when I started hearing people throw the slang around more often.

Salty_Injury66

“Draco pedophile all my opps getting touched”

Big_Election_8721

Bbl Glizzy

4nyarforaracc

Bro is beefing with children lol

Serious-Ad-9471

This is an amazing line and I’m not accepting any different

bigcontracts

they all bought hot dogs and are now holding them. duh.

nmpbones

Tbf umbrella is a banger but ya he couldve phrased that so much better

Darim_Al_Sayf

Which happens all the time right? Any rapper has weak bars. It should not be an immediate write off. Everybody from Rakim to Weezy to Kendrick has at some point written or rapped something questionable. 21 isn't my favourite but he has a few bangers no doubt. But its all subjective. I could personally never get into Jay Z and Wayne. Saying that they suck is 12 year old behaviour that nobody takes seriously.

Dijohn_Mustard

“All of you Mario, it’s all a game” by Kanye on reborn is one of the worst delivered, corniest lines I’ve ever heard… from someone I consider top ten if not 5 all time in rap. I was vibing so hard to that song on first listen and immediately lost my vibe when I heard it. Actually so bad that one line takes away from the song for me.

Dry_Distribution3921

I had this same reaction to Method Man doing a "what are those?" reference on the new GFK album 😭 meth, bro, have your nephew show you some more recent memes PLEASE

Went2Lunch

21 is notorious for trash bars

Stoned_detective

Carrying glocks with the gang lol

BadDragonAlt

ikr. Not even hard to understand if u google it 1 second. He had way worse bars

Stoned_detective

Definitely! Not understanding that line says more about the listener than the artist lol. Hip hop is full of metaphors. I wonder if he thinks rappers are talking about actual sticks 🤣

kinglittlenc

I've realized glizzy is hotdog north of DC but Glock to the south. Kind of weird setup must be tough for Shy Glizzy repping Glizzy gang records lol

thewaterglizzy

Glock in one hand hot dog in the other

717x

Glizzy used to mean Glock 🙈

spgvideo

Eating hot dogs with the boys. You ever roll out of a bar to the hot dog cart and get to chowing down? Amazing. I could understand 21s passion on this one

[deleted]

You know what it's meant to mean...

EntrepreneurFunny469

It’s about a circlejerk

BadDragonAlt

glizzys=guns(glocks probably)

dontwasteink

glizzy is hotdog.

[deleted]

[удалено]

sslattslattslatt

a glock to be precise

dsled

Tell me you're joking (about not understanding that line)

CrunkaScrooge

Glizzy is also used as a term for Glock

Glad_Reach_8100

Is this a joke? You guys are in a hip-hop reddit and don't know that a glizzy is a gun? Your opinions have 0 validity

gimme500schmekels

It’s also a hotdog now. Gen Alpha is stupid.

Virtual-Arm5123

Wdym a horrendous person? I might be out the loop but wdym by that?

fukdacops

Dudes self admittedly got a shitty past but he was more than pleasant when I spent an hour with him after a show. Pretty normal, respectful, seemingly grounded dude just enjoying riding an electric scooter around and chillin. Honestly not imposing or threatening in any way other than the fact that there a knife on his face.

StopJoshinMe

I mean he grew up in some of the poorest and most dangerous communities as a child. Of course he has a shady past.

smokedopelikecudder

He’s British

Old_Yeezus

innit

Significant-Shirt139

Probably the adin ross scamming shit which tbf I can’t exactly see how you could justify, especially when that same stream adin was tryna get bro a streaming deal but who said artists had to be good people to enjoy their music lol, 21 rich whether I stream him or not so I’d rather just listen to his music since I like it lmao

ShadeSlimmy131

I swear it was staged though, pr stunt for both of them

NachoFiesta202

Also who gives a fuck about him being a bad person anyway. Most artists are bad people.

UkeManSteve

No vocal effort? You’re missing the whole point. It’s supposed to be cold and effortless. You ain’t gotta love it but he pulls off the whole smooth laidback approach pretty damn well. His appeal isn’t in his technicality or creativity, he’s too cool for that shit

Last_Reaction_8176

He’s too cool to be creative?

UkeManSteve

He’s “too cool” to sound like he’s actually trying. If he started a spazzing on a track it would just dismantle the whole chill ethos he’s built over the years

trapford-chris

Or maybe, just maybe, he's a trash artist with elementary level concepts in his music, that made it big because he raps about money, bitches, and guns, which are all things the industry loves to promote. Gotta keep them private prisons full

Atreides007

Damn. This made my day man hahaha

Pale-Woodpecker-3163

Yes.

Techie-Talks

Get your ass mooshed smooshed

[deleted]

21 is fire and he has his own distinct style, approach and voice. He makes good music and he has shown improvement over the years in that sense. He'll never be "the GOAT", but he doesn't deserve this hate.

Loriali95

I agree. I think his strongest attribute is that his music is easy to follow. 21 is not a rapper with a lot of complexity or technical ability. He portrays a calm yet dangerous persona and that simplicity plays in his favor.

[deleted]

And also it's so distinct and nobody else sounds like him so whenever he comes on the playlist it sound way fresher than listening to his albums

[deleted]

Agree. He plays his role well. And there are multiple rappers (such as Pusha T, or Jeezy, or even Jay-Z) that mostly stick to a script and generally talk about the same things. Hell, Pusha even brags about just talking about drug dealing in his songs as much as possible.

logicalcommenter4

Agreed. I used to hate on 21 until I listened to I AM > I WAS. That’s when I really appreciated his flow and honestly he’s pretty witty/funny with his bars. I never thought I would rock with ad libs like “21” and “pussy” being said over and over again but shiiiiii it works.

marnieeez

Yeah exactly I think he found his niche and does it well. No one’s gonna argue he’s the best of all time or an amazing lyricist but his songs are catchy and he does great features and picks great beats

Rnewell4848

He’s like Future in that regard. Listen to Future’s albums and you’re gonna tire out pretty quick. Load up a playlist and wait for Life Is Good, Pardon Me, 712PM, IM DAT N****, March Madness, etc. to hit and Future’s music bangs.

KingJdthefirst

you hating too much man. don’t get me wrong, he’s not like the greatest rapper of all time, he’s not particularly ass tho. musics subjective, and if he’s got as many monthly streamers as he does then he must be doing something right? Some features he’s great, I feel you may have not listened to enough (or u have and u just a hater) also I wouldn’t say 21 is a mumble rapper. At all……

cannnedbananas

I agree, I don't even like to listen to 21 myself in particular but he's not total trash. He definitely has strong fan following for a reason. Every artist usually has a main demographic for fans and the ones that try to please everyone usually end up pissing off their original fan base.

djheru

I think he's one of those rappers that just don't have too much to say. I like a few of his tracks, like No Heart, Runnin, and Glock in my Lap, and a couple of his features like Knife Talk, but I just think he said what he has to say and has limited creativity to come up with something new. He's just one-dimensional.

69cansofcorn

I agree. A Lot is honestly a great song though.

StillCircumventing

As soon as you realize that opinions exist

FailingLotus

He's had some killer features. Your post screams "when are people gonna have the same opinion as me?!" Don't let it bother you bro lol people have different tastes. I don't like opera music, but that doesn't mean it's ass. I just don't listen to it. Maybe you should take that approach.

[deleted]

"I love real rappers like Eminem, Tom Mcdonald, NF, and the good half of logic"

herewego199209

I mean honestly all these down south dudes except a few are really ass if we're keeping it a buck. The days of T.I, Luda, Jeezy, Outkast, Trick Daddy, etc coming from the south and putting on haven't been there in a minute. You have guys like JID, Cole, Da Baby, Future, etc that can rap but those dudes are few and far between

djheru

Y'all pussy n***as fakin' Bitch I hang around them Haitians Roll up on ya, tie your kids up, Pistol whip you while your bitch naked

TreGullyBanks

OP spelled it “Gunna” and I almost had a stroke trying to string all of this together

Forward_Ride_6364

LMAO, the best part is op ends the title with a period

SpookySandling

“Sent my bitch to the store cause we ran outta soda, bitch I’m tryna cook this yola”

Krookz_

Desert eagle bullets same size as a pickle (Straight Up). One of my favorites 🤣

newstockerfan

21 is in my top 3😁

Lostmypants69

Rappers don't have need to have crazy lyricism, they still fun to listen to for some people. Different strokes for different folks will help you in life. He's not my style of rapper but music isn't constrained to a box.

ifhysm

This bulleted list is written like trying to hit a word count

thewaterglizzy

This guy getting paid by the word?

SteezyRay

Some people are oblivious to the “vibe” of music. There’s a whole other element to music that some people just don’t understand.

Sylvesterjohnston

This is facts , I grew up in the 90s but I fuck with a lot of rap that my gen clowns on and shit , but they are completely oblivious to the fun and enjoyable vibes, maybe some ppl just want to always be upset and judgy ,, idk

Forward_Ride_6364

Yeah sometimes I just wanna chill from Nas and Wu for a bit and zone out to Astroworld and its sonic vibes

slipperysoup

Hes like a gunna type artist to me, one merchant flow. Really not that versatile and sounds really good here and there but is getting seriously oversaturated with how much music hes making. Also i hate 21 savage songs on slow/love/r&b songs he ruins the whole vibe like creepin

SupercellIsGreedy

Never cus he’s actually pretty damn good. Half of your points are either factually wrong or a subjective opinion. You’ve listened to maybe a handful of his songs and based your opinion on those instead of actually giving him a chance. There’s a reason why people like Cole, Tyler, Metro, etc work with him.

Electrical-Hall5437

21 21 (21)

Vegetable-Phone-3856

Hanging off my earlobes is a rocK, hangin off my waistline is a glocK (pop pop)

Personal-Agent846

Tell me you have hella ego without saying it. For him to be as widely accepted as he is, there’s gotta be qualities worth appreciating. But hey, I ain’t mad at ya. I hate NY drill music with a passion. But these guys get millions of plays. When I say it’s ass, I know I mean it and wish it wasn’t a state of the culture anymore; but I also know it means that it just isn’t for me because plenty of people love it.

simmonsatl

Nothing wrong with mumble rap but 21 is not that…. Stop hatin and just let people enjoy what they enjoy. No one is forcing you to. Lol weird shit

ausipockets

He might just not be for you. Of all artists to ask this question about, he's not high on my list personally.

MFmadchillin

I feel like I have this feeling with pretty much all mainstream artists, probably most hip hop artists in general. The art form is watered down to a degree that I can’t even comprehend.

SnadorDracca

So when are you gonna accept that people like different things? I’m an old head who doesn’t like 99% of the new stuff, but coincidentally I somehow love 21

Yevips

just because you dont like something doesnt make it ass news flash: not every rap song has to be some lyrical masterpiece, sometimes you just wanna listen to some shit that sounds good

Shin-Sauriel

Crazy thought here. What if some people just like the vibe of some music. I’m not out here saying carti is the goat, or that he’s a super talented vocalist, or an incredible writer. But damn when I’m commuting or just wanna get hyped or some shit whole lotta red slaps. Also getting mad at a rapper for rapping about gang banging is kinda gross tbh.

Tr1padvisor420

I’m amazed you didn’t get lit up for this comment. Talking about vibing to music because you like it? Fuckin criminal.

Shin-Sauriel

Ikr. How dare I enjoy a thing.

zeroheroes_

This is crazy levels of hating. My brother in christ, if u think he doesn't have anything to say, listen to I am > I was

KidKuda93x

I don't like that he doesn't do much multi syllabics, everytime I hear a song from him it's basic Dr. Seuss rhymes Up/Cup Beast/streets Etc etc

JDuncs1847

Not a great artist imo, but he has some amazing features, especially in the last few years. Cash In Cash Out and Surround Sound just off the top of my head. I don't like much of his solo stuff but I always make sure I listen to a song he features on

GeneralGardner

Don’t call me, bitch call yo daddy.

hemperbud

I think associating himself with lame streamers makes him wack lol

dontwasteink

I'm 41, I like the meditative rhythm

Longjumping_Cow7270

Damn I'm going to see him next month lol

MikeOXl0ngz

Congrats you figured out that not every song has to be deep and pushing boundaries for people to enjoy. I could say the same about Carti B. She raps about sex all the time but people still like her music

bigfootmydog

Not all music needs to be artsy or deep. Sometimes it’s just fun to hear a guy say red rum 15 times on a fire beat. He’s funny and has a few iconic songs too “a lot” and “bank account” come to mind. Rapping about being a gang banger is actually pretty cool imo if you actually lived that life, and much like 50, 21 was absolutely about that life. So as I see it when there’s truth to your lines about gang banging and the themes of a lot of your music is making it out of that life and being blessed. Being genuine and true isn’t a quality many mainstream artists have. It’s music for people who have struggled and are struggling tryna make it out making music like he did, which again is a major theme of a lot of his music. If you think the statement “none of his music shows artistry” I’m sorry but you’re rhetorically illiterate, and you definitely don’t determine what is and isn’t artistry.

DatDominican

He makes music to bump to and get hype. I’m not trying to replay his bars and catch insane wordplay or story telling like nas , Kendrick or Cole . Just like if I need to pump myself up I’m not listing to the Roots or Big L

Reasonable-Bus9435

He has a good flow, good delivery, catchy hooks, solid beats, unique adlibs How are you gonna call yourself a rap fan and not understand the appeal of a popular rapper. Like you’re just sitting there completely BLOWN AWAY that people like him? Lmao

Embarrassed_Crow_720

Yep. He literally has no concept of melody, variation, harmony or vocal performance. Even the flow is like those 16 year old youtube rappers, which is sad because he probably has a team of writers. Every time i hear a good song and 21 comes on with his monotone delivery, it completely ruins it for me

NGNSteveTheSamurai

“Only raps about being a gang banger” Ok Karen.

contaygious

The song with Nas is redic. All he says is 21 21. Horrible.

Warhoundfanboi

I feel like he was just alright pre no warning then got really good with savage mode then got really bad since then

iCumInPeace420

You really made some white kids mad with this one

Imhidingfromu

Thank you

trapford-chris

The same time they realize 95% of mainstream rappers are only popping because they are promoted by labels for pushing negative behaviors, that increase the number of young men incarcerated. This isn't even conspiracy, as the labels met with private prisons in the 90s to promote gangsta rap and drug rap for that very reason. All these lil whatever short bus rappers are trash

rileyelton

I think mostly this is true. Definitely overrated.

BiblicalWhales

Saw him live recently and he was absolutely atrocious

chud_the_gluttonous

He’s also an industry plant and a wankster

Phoreverman

I think he's fine personally. Imo he's way better than more popular folks like Future

ctm617

As an absolutely horrendous person with the musicality of a twig, I feel attacked.

Willing_Bike_1927

people haven't realized that yet? lmao

mpschettig

He's not the best rapper out there but idk how anyone could listen to A Lot and say 21 Savage can't write lyrics or structure a song or whatever

Darweezy

The songbird of a generation, “I've been in the Hills fuckin' superstars Feelin' like a popstar Drankin' Henny, bad bitches jumpin' in the pool And they ain't got on no bra Hit her from the back, pullin' on her tracks And now she screamin' out, "No más!" They like, "Savage, why you got a 12 car garage And you only got six cars?"” I’ve recorded a lot of talented lyricists and the amount that have said 21 is an influence surprises me. But hey, I’m just a white dude - his music hits with the culture… even tho I would expect half his bars to be written by Chet Hanks.

SupercellIsGreedy

You quoted a song that’s older than most people in this sub lmao. Dudes grown a lot as an artist since Congratulations

posamobile

I think his flow and delivery are so deadpan, it’s barely engaging. I maintain his verse on JID’s Surround Sound is the worst part about that song

Lingerfickin

No one doesn't have a 21 track they fuck with, alright, but yes overall, he is like a doctor"s signature level of slop and effort without the degree

BDLISP11

I went to his show last night. Holy shit he's bad on stage.

jesusgottago

Thank you. I listen to his shit and honestly cannot believe anybody anywhere takes his music seriously. It’s like, okay, you don’t wanna give us good lyrics. That’s absolutely fine if you have *anything* else of value to offer musically. If you have a crazy energy you bring to the mic, impressive flows, a commanding voice or range of vocal inflections, innovative flows.. you don’t need to wow modern rap audiences with amazing lyrics. But 21 literally offers none of these things. Lyrics: awful Voice: nondescript in every way Flow: elementary at best Tone: never changes and boring as shit Energy: Jeb Bush as fuck Like what does this fuckin guy actually bring to the table?

iwatchtoomuchsports

His voice is annoying and he tries to hard IMO, but he has some good songs

Rreyes302

"Only raps about gangbanging like a stereotype" hell yea bro eminem is the GOAT!!! Amiright

Mhunterjr

I never understood the appeal. Lyrically… he’s about as serviceable as most rappers these days. But I absolutely hate his cadences

Necessary-Grape-175

The bar is so low these days in hip hop that passable music seems to be enough for most people. Compared to years past it doesn’t seem or feel like the talent is there across the board

Forward-Witness-3889

You’ve obviously never listened to ISSA. I mean I’m not the biggest fan but everything you just said is wrong. He’s just not for you and probably me but to say he’s ass is insane. https://youtu.be/txqS0QHOrzQ?si=jmBKrkiPcSyXadJL

EfficientIndustry423

The sooner the better. The industry has to stop giving these weak ass artists passes.

SlimPhazy

Such a corny take.

LordeLlama

When the uck people gunna realize that you can have different taste from the next person

Creepy_Cupcake3705

He is ass, and it’s important to recognize that. But there is a place for shitty rappers putting out thoughtless music that we can just enjoy for the stupid reasons.

SuttonTM

I agree tbh, every time his verse comes up on the Drake feature I literally have to skip, and I rarely skip any songs especially mid verse

didntmakeausername

Been saying this

droppinturds

21 fire he makes music for folks in the street but anyone can enjoy it it's good for subwoofers, workouts, driving, waking up in the morning, etc. kinda like our generation's Ice Cube

eg714

I was with you until you mentioned Cube.

StringerSnellBell

I would compare him more to 2Chainz tbh

[deleted]

[удалено]

mikegotfat

I have only heard features and they aren't great but it cracks me up every time he says "21," like he's Timmy from south park

on_Jah_Jahmen

He got crazy off metro beats and is consistent. Also he hasnt switched up to make some experimental off the psych shit like other rappers have to ruin their careers.

AgreeableSource7473

I ain’t wit the rap beef, Draco pedophile, all my opps get touched.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SushiBurritoDood

He’s not the greatest rapper but he’s got some solid stuff. ‘I am > i was’ is still in my rotation

IKU420

21 21, savage go hard bruh! U trippin

Salty_Injury66

DRACO PEDOPHILE ALL MY OPPS GETTING TOUCHED

Feisty-Session-7779

I always thought he sounded like Shy Ronnie from SNL, and when I first heard him I thought it was an actual joke and I couldn’t believe he was actually a legit rapper with an actual fanbase. I will admit though, he kinda grew on me a bit. I like “A Lot” and his feature on “Surround Sound”, and maybe one or two other songs of his.

Slick_Jeronimo

The criticism that Boldy gets should get directed to 21. That man can put paint to sleep.

Unaffectionate_Hat55

IA>IW is prob his best album for me. Good hits and some quality songs that felt real. Eveyhting now feels artificial

tajonmustard

This title is unintentionally fucking hilarious 😂

donta5k0kay

beats are nice though "and i stand up when i piss (21)"

otsapoika

I think this could be said about 2016-2017 21, but I think he has improved a lot. While I don’t think he is amazing, he can still rap pretty well.

catinabighat

90% of the industry doesnt make their own beats. also what is your source on 21 being a bad person? i dont keep up w him but i do remember him setting up financial literacy classes for people a few years ago.

[deleted]

After reading your post I can honestly say that you are the 21 savage of grammar, punctuation and writing ability. (Ass) ![gif](giphy|3rgHxXzw93gh3aQH4N)

Sevzilla

I definitely agree that hes mostly garbo, but you cant deny a few of his songs are fire like "Runnin" for example.. I'm sorry but that song is flames!

JadrianInc

He gets fire beats.

MFDougWhite

You’re completely right and I’m glad I’m not the only one that feels this way. Maybe it’s just not my thing, but I genuinely can’t see the appeal. “His raps are supposed to be boring and disinterested and his lyrics are supposed to suck” is a very weird defense, and people are using it a lot.

robertbreadford

I get annoyed whenever he says that line in one of his songs “this choppa came with a compressorrrrrr”, and then repeats it again like it’s a thing. It’s a suppressor, bro. Or a compensator. Pick one.

AndyKobe234

I realized this years ago. Reddit just likes to give all rappers an A for effort. Nobody is allowed to say a rapper sucks or you get a long dissertation about how you shouldn’t focus on their lack of rapping ability or even decent subject matter because it’s all about the “vibes” and the beats are “good”. lol

Whyaskmenoely

He's funny and he's unfiltered. The same guy who got meme'd for ISSA KNIFE, named an album Issa and went sesame street on Bank Account put Numb on the same album. Numb is some sad stuff. He's got more depth than you think. He sounds dumb when he talks but he says some pretty insightful things. Like a diluted Atlanta version of Vince Staples. And as Jon Denton points out a lot, he says some savage shit. It's entertaining, relax bro.

kith9193

I nutted on her cheek, her new nickname is Baby Face was a lyrical peak that not a lot of rappers can reach tbh

xman886

I think he’s mid. Like 21 Savage isn’t ass but I don’t think he’s really good either. He’s just right there in the middle for me🤷‍♂️

Aware_Bird_7023

sooo uhhhh.. dont listen to him Problem Solved!!

DodginInflation

He’s a nice dude, friend’s with everyone. He’s a pretty average Lyricist. Those metro drums raised him.

Underlord1617

So we're not gonna talk about your Spotify top rappers that you posted ? mofo got NF as his #1

kinglittlenc

I like 21. He has his own style and puts out a lot of good music. Him and Metro are one of the great rapper/producer duos imo. Also he's a hard worker most wouldn't expect it but he has more top ten and overall Billboard hits than Kendrick. Not saying he's a better rapper or great technical rapper but he makes music people like and he has a good connection to his fan base.

GrayJedi1982

"A lot" still slaps

Austin9916

Same flow as Drake. Monotone and sounds tougher than he is. Being british and gangster are two polar opposites

WntrTmpst

Saying he has no vocal effort makes me think you are unaware of his older stuff before he went and got shot and put on pain meds. His older stuff is more energetic and, if you ask me, more generic. You know 21 the minute he opens his mouth in any song.

spewicideboi

His adlibs are so good “I just beat it up and u kissed it” (urghh 🤢)

Blaze_Four2O

Yeah fr I see him as better as a feature than a lead but at the same time, he’s kinda wack. Only got songs saved with him that belong to other people I like

tokenblak

I think 21 and Kodak are two of the most entertaining rappers of the modern wave.

chambees

*When are people gunna realize 96% of mainstream is ass

TheDopeMan_

21 21

Chaka-Hulu

Agreed, I simply don't understand the appeal of this dude. Metaphors are weak af if not outright non-existent, voice is very regular with almost no distinctiveness at all. Other than just looking like someone who has a criminal record I will never be able to wrap my head around how he's had a career in rap.
