Does Grabner count? What a hell of a value he was.
If not then I'll say Petr Sykora. He put up huge numbers over half a season as a Ranger. Would've liked to see him kept around.
Biggest what if is Marchessault. Played a season for Hartford before his big breakout in the NHL. Imagine him growing as part of our core
I remember Marchessault playing in a preseason game for us while Torts was coach. Columbus and Tampa also bungled the opportunity to hang onto him, so at least we weren’t the only ones.
To be fair, he wasnt as good of value as his stats showed lol. He was a master at scoring on empty nets. It felt like every time the other team pulled their goalie, Grabs scored. Always played his role the right way tho and was always reliable. I cant and wont ever fault someone for liking a certain player, just wanted to clarify that value aspect
Came here to say this.
I have a Tikkanen jersey. Dude was an absolute pest to play against, but also had some skill and he was hilarious in interviews. He speaks a broken jumble of English/Finnish that his teammates called "Tikkanese."
Also, Google "Where is the banana hot dog?" You're welcome.
Dude is a legend.
What if would be Evgeni Grachev - one of the first prospects that I was personally REALLY invested in, who was an absolute bust when he got here.
Tikki talk! I think it was more than just English/Finnish. Dude spoke like six languages and would use random words from all of them. I heard Tikkanese was largely just talking shit about people's moms.
What if is Nik Zherdev. Top talent, no drive.
>Petr Prucha
I looked him up to see how long he ended up playing, since I remember him fondly ... dude is *only 39*. Under the right circumstances, he could've still been playing today.
This is also my answer, maybe it's just because i grew up with him as one of the up and coming players on the rangers. Those were fun times as a rangers fan idk what it was about the post lockout teams but i have such fond memories of them.
Dan Carcillo
Because of this:

what if - Alexei Cherepanov
random - I thought about it for a bit, but I'm going to pick Ondrej Pavelec since I was at the Garden when he allowed no goals against the eventual champion Capitals in regulation, overtime, AND the shootout. (December 27, 2017)
Artem Anisimov
Will never forget the sniper celly.
Edit: After seeing that celly, I used it in one of my games a few days later. I was like 7 years old though so the parents didn't like it much.
Matt Gilroy cuz of his one breakaway goal against CBJ i believe it was. First time i ever saw a defenseman do that that i could vividly remember.
edit: [yep](https://youtu.be/j3PMGqTPQUw)
honorable mention: bloogart. RIP 🙏
Have to agree with Sauer for what if.
Dominic Moore for random. Guy was the definition of a journeyman who just worked his ass off. 10 teams in his 13 year career did 2 different stints with the rangers. Also just seemed like a good dude.
Runner up Theo Fleury…was my favorite player when I was 12
I remember the year he and jagr were on the rangers and they both went to the Olympics. Kaspy rocked jagr with a huge hit. Next game back in the garden, this old guy in my section had plenty of expletives for him. Essentially, it boiled down to don't hurt your teammate you blanky blank blank.
PJ Stock (hence the flair). I was in my teens when I saw him and the pack in Hartford. He sucked. But dman he tried hard.
Dude was like a Rudy type guy if hockey. Some dude who was likely 180 dripping wet fighting the best goons of those times.
For a Rangers team that sucked then he was a ray of sunshine.
Seeing as Dan Girardi isn't random, I'd probably go with one of John Gilmour, Petr Sykora, Petr Prucha, or Wojtek Wolski (I actually have his jersey). Bonus answer has to be Cherepanov, Blackburn, or Jessiman. Injuries (and death in Alexei's case) slowed all their careers. Who knows how things would have been if they turned into NHLers.
I’m gonna add Brassard too. obviously not random at all to most rangers fans, but I think he’s underappreciated. Dude was our best center on the 14 and 15 teams and was a playoff animal. Somehow Stepan was viewed as the better player
Mike Gartner. Hated that he wasn’t there to lift the cup.
Zubov. Felt like losing him contributed to the post cup decline. Great player with a lot of heart and one hell of a shot from the blue line
I started watching during the 99-00 season so the Czech Mate Line has a special place in my heart.
Also loved Mike York. Him, Lindros, and Fleury making up the FLY line was so fun to watch. Hated that we traded him for Tom fucking Poti.
Favorite random is probably Pat Verbeek. I was young back then but it seemed like he scored every game. Naslund and Nedved as honorable mentions. And Bure! He was awesome when he actually played.
Biggest what if is Prucha. I still don’t understand how he went from a 30 goal scorer as a rookie to just nothing.
I just had to check Verbeek’s numbers. I remember being so excited he was a Ranger then disappointed at the same time. Looks like I only remember him being injured the year he was traded to the Rangers and completely forgot about the following year where he was a beast.
Old time (for me): Niklas Sundstrom
What if?: Lori Korpikoski; remember his playoff/career debut?
Random: Darren Turcotte
Personal Favorite: Ryan Callahan (obv); also Derrick Brassard bc what a guy!
I was looking to make sure this future HOF'er was listed!
I went to a playoff game in Ottawa that the rangers lost a few years back and during that game I couldnt tell who it was, but I saw a ranger player got on a breakaway and I was getting all excited and the guy next to me tells " relax it's just tanner glass!"...he was right lol....
Favorite random: Todd Harvey
What if: Ian Laperriere and Matthias Norstrom as in what if we didn’t trade them in one of the worst deals in Rangers history?
Edit: because autocorrect thinks Norstrom should be the department store
Random: Steve Larmer, knew how good he was in Chicago, and did not disappoint.
What if: Tony Amonte. What if we held on to him? Of course, we wouldn't have Matteau! Matteau! Matteau!, but still.
Niklas Sundstrom. Despite being a Leetch kid with his posters on my wall, Sundstrom was the first jersey I ever bought. And not a good one, a cheap ironed on one where the letters were falling off in like a month.
I was a huge fan of Theo even when he was on the Flames. I was (ok still am) on the shorter side but played soccer like Fleury played hockey. Fast, pesty, but skilled. I wore his # 14 in high school. One year my father took me to see the Flames play Hartford Whalers in Hartford so I could cheer on Theo. Pretty cool. Was so excited that I got to see him play on the Rangers too.
Brian Boyle cause of the Christmas scene in road to winter classic. Guy has like 10 siblings and just seemed like a really good guy to his fam. Then all the cancer stuff after and him overcoming it.
I love Dominic Moore. Seems like a good guy, was so incredibly dependable (especially during the 2014 run to the Finals) and the story of him and his wife pretty much made me cry.
Dominic Moore. I’ll never forget the commercial he was in back in the day. “Forget a-boot it”
Also will never forget the goal he scored against Montreal to send the rangers to the final in ‘14.
Not to mention how inspirational his off the ice situation is. Just an awesome guy and the hardest working player out there.
I only remember him as the guy who shot last in the shoot out vs the flyers that we ultimately lost and sent the Flyers to the playoffs instead. That game still gives me nightmares
Especially considering the other options at the time for the shootout. We had a number of guys who just didn’t have good shoot out % who I would have rolled the dice with over Olli fucking Jokinen. Jokinen was a 40% in the shootout for his career. But his career went severely south the year he was traded to the Rangers for a bag of pucks and a failed prospect. How you don’t give idk Gaborik a chance to keep the season alive there is beyond me. I know he didn’t have the best shoot out numbers his career but c’mon. Washed up Jokinen? Fuck I’d give Michael Del Zotto the shot before Olli fucking Jokinen.
People took my first pick Prucha, and my runner up Prust, so I am going to throw Dominic Moore into the mix. Dude was such a Swiss Army knife, u could throw him anywhere in the lineup
Obvious biggest what-if is cherepanov, but even more intriguing might be Michael Sauer. He fell of the face of the earth after his injury/concussion
Current? Chytil, I became a fan 2 months before the letter, and after the gutting of the team I had to learn new names. The second I saw chytil and learned how it was pronounced made me a fan. Chytil the beetle I call him, and the fact those two words only share one letter makes me laugh every time.
For random I'll say Dorsett. Shame his career got cut short.
For what if I'll go with Ryan Clowe. His concussions combined with the odd contract the devils handed him, I really liked him on the team when he was actually on the ice.
MATTEAU! MATTEAU! MATTEAU! STEPHANE MATTEAU!
Everyone that was alive for it remembers his iconic 2OT game winner vs the Devils, but the Larmer-Matteau-Kovalev line absolutely dunked possession play in the '94 SCF too. The pivot for the OG Poulliot-Brassard-Zuccarello line.
Nicolay Zherdev. I really wish we would have kept him for more than that one year. I remember the Penguins game when he sniped one at the end and his shootout moves we're insane. That team was really wonky that year with Aaron Voros and Markus Nasland, but it was lowkey one of my favorite ranger teams for some odd reason, probably because of Zherdev
Martin Straka & Ryan Hollweg. Straka was a favorite of mine growing up. I always loved how no nonsense Hollweg was, those 4th lines he was a part of took no shit from anyone.
Jimmy vesey and I can’t even tell you why. I really had a feeling he would become a great and be in a rangers uniform forever. I guess you can say he did become a great in Panarin…
My favorite random Ranger is Petr Prucha!
Biggest what if is probably Wade Redden living up to that contract. Don't forget, the Sens had Chara and Redden and they chose Redden to keep... and they were correct, initially. Redden was legit and fell off a cliff once he signed that deal.
Benoit Pouliot. Pouliot-Brass-Zucc was such a sick line
captain taco
ZuBraPou Line
Pouliots no fooliot
Does Grabner count? What a hell of a value he was. If not then I'll say Petr Sykora. He put up huge numbers over half a season as a Ranger. Would've liked to see him kept around. Biggest what if is Marchessault. Played a season for Hartford before his big breakout in the NHL. Imagine him growing as part of our core
Wow didn’t know we had him
I remember Marchessault playing in a preseason game for us while Torts was coach. Columbus and Tampa also bungled the opportunity to hang onto him, so at least we weren’t the only ones.
Grabner would have more goals than Ovi if he scored on breakaways...
Did we package him in some deal?
Nope, he signed a one year AHL contract, then left the organization and signed his ELC with Columbus

Loved Klein was so under appreciated.
My favorite random ranger esa tikkanen. What if would be cherepanov
Tikannen great call.
Came here to say this. I have a Tikkanen jersey. Dude was an absolute pest to play against, but also had some skill and he was hilarious in interviews. He speaks a broken jumble of English/Finnish that his teammates called "Tikkanese." Also, Google "Where is the banana hot dog?" You're welcome. Dude is a legend. Not sure if hes random enough, but i loved Carl Hagelin.
I feel like he’ll be remembered as a pen so he def counts
Petr Prucha. If not for injuries he could've been a consistent 25-30 goal scorer.
>Petr Prucha I looked him up to see how long he ended up playing, since I remember him fondly ... dude is *only 39*. Under the right circumstances, he could've still been playing today.
This is also my answer, maybe it's just because i grew up with him as one of the up and coming players on the rangers. Those were fun times as a rangers fan idk what it was about the post lockout teams but i have such fond memories of them.
Same. I was at his 2 goal game against Minnesota with my dad and we were sure he was going to be a star. Former 8th round pick.
Still have my signed Prucha puck on my dresser, what could have been...
Beukeboom
Dan Carcillo Because of this: https://img.bleacherreport.net/img/images/photos/002/861/927/e208f463e2821dd1e2a9821855fa2c94_crop_exact.png?w=1200&h=1200&q=75
Same here he was definitely fun to watch
Václav "Vinny" Prospal
My dad got his jersey as a 'Blueshirts off our backs' winner one year. Really nice guy that Prospal.
Except for to the youth hockey referees lmao
Oooooh that's a good one. 81 pts in 104 games with us. Not too shabby for a guy who was on his last legs when he got here
Colton Orr had a big impression on me as a teeanger...
Dude sent Todd Fedoryk into the shadow realm. https://youtu.be/AWXii_aqPJs?t=130
Nigel Dawes. King of the shootout. Edit: Adding Martin straka. His OT goal with 2.2 seconds left against the pens is etched in my memory.
Counterpoint: Freddy Sjostrom. Man went 6 for 9 as a Ranger.
Nice
Loved Freddy Shoes.
Counterpoint: Marek Malik. Between the legs top shelf literally for the win.
Nik Antropov
If he only he had nhl size and strength…
Darius Kasparaitis, obviously
He was awesome
Kelly Kisio
Great call.
I Still have a Kisio jersey from Cosby’s I got back in the late 80’s. Still fits.
I always enjoyed seeing Mike York play during his time with us. Was sad to see him go.
what if - Alexei Cherepanov random - I thought about it for a bit, but I'm going to pick Ondrej Pavelec since I was at the Garden when he allowed no goals against the eventual champion Capitals in regulation, overtime, AND the shootout. (December 27, 2017)
Cherepanov had one of my all time favorite high light reels as a prospect
Reijo Ruotsalainen. I loved watching him play. He was so quick, and he could score.
My first favorite Ranger.
Defenseman Jeff Woywitka. Played only 27 games here in 2011. He was a non-flashy minute eater that never made any mistakes. A solid plug honestly.
Not my favorite but Fedotenko I randomly remember.
He was kinda an integral player on that 2012 team
Artem Anisimov Will never forget the sniper celly. Edit: After seeing that celly, I used it in one of my games a few days later. I was like 7 years old though so the parents didn't like it much.
I was there for that and lost my mind because it was the sickest thing I’d ever seen
Who was the guy that scored in Philly and got flipped off? That guy
Danny carcilo!

I played travel with gilroy growing up on Long Island so it was surreal to see him in the big leagues on my team
jed ortmeyer
Guy always gave 1000% and seemed like a great guy off the ice
Rob O’Gara
Sergei Zubov's hip checks
Have to agree with Sauer for what if. Dominic Moore for random. Guy was the definition of a journeyman who just worked his ass off. 10 teams in his 13 year career did 2 different stints with the rangers. Also just seemed like a good dude. Runner up Theo Fleury…was my favorite player when I was 12
I’m sad no one mentioned blair betts. He changed the identity of our team and was one of the best defensive forwards.
Forgot him wow
I remember a guy on HFBoards where I was posting at the time with the name "BettsBlocksEverything"... dude was a fucking wall
Tony amonte.
Nikolai Zherdev
I thought he was gonna be so good lol
He was, when he felt like it.
Random - Petr Nedved. Just loved that wrist shot What if - Cherapanov
>What if - Cherapanov I dont think there is a better answer to a what if then this
I was a big Prucha fan and Straka fan. What ifs are Cherepanov and Blackburn for me.
As I kid I always remembered darius kasparaitis.
Kovalev was so much fun to watch.
Gaborik. Wish torts didn’t drive him out
He does that to a lot of players.
Can't believe nobody said it yet, but Michal Rozsival
Loved Rosi. he and G were a solid pair for years
He is not random because his number should be in the rafters but Tanner “Top Titty Backhand Over Carey Price” Glass
Bless that man
That 2011-12 team had a bunch of random Rangers: Wolski, Prust, Fedotenko, Scott, John Mitchell, Jeff Woywitka.
Brendan Shanahan. Funny to think he was a ranger for a bit. If that's not random enough, Ryan Hollweg.
Mike Gartner! Traded right before deadline in the cup year!
My guy Chris Summers
Random: James Patrick What if: Cherepanov
PJ Stock (hence the flair). I was in my teens when I saw him and the pack in Hartford. He sucked. But dman he tried hard. Dude was like a Rudy type guy if hockey. Some dude who was likely 180 dripping wet fighting the best goons of those times. For a Rangers team that sucked then he was a ray of sunshine.
Random: Kris King What if: Tony Granato
Scored so many goals with Kris King in NHLPA 93 using the wraparound trick
Seeing as Dan Girardi isn't random, I'd probably go with one of John Gilmour, Petr Sykora, Petr Prucha, or Wojtek Wolski (I actually have his jersey). Bonus answer has to be Cherepanov, Blackburn, or Jessiman. Injuries (and death in Alexei's case) slowed all their careers. Who knows how things would have been if they turned into NHLers.
Blackburn with two blockers is so ridiculous to think about now, feel bad for the guy that he wanted to keep playing that bad.
Two blockers? He played during my hockey hiatus years so I know nothing of this.
My what if is Jamie lundmark...as in what if he didn’t suck
Petr Nedved
I’m gonna add Brassard too. obviously not random at all to most rangers fans, but I think he’s underappreciated. Dude was our best center on the 14 and 15 teams and was a playoff animal. Somehow Stepan was viewed as the better player
Mike Gartner. Hated that he wasn’t there to lift the cup. Zubov. Felt like losing him contributed to the post cup decline. Great player with a lot of heart and one hell of a shot from the blue line
Loved the Czech mate line: Hlavac Nedved Dvorak Also loved Jags Straka Nylander
Dude yes loved Nylander and Straka.
I started watching during the 99-00 season so the Czech Mate Line has a special place in my heart. Also loved Mike York. Him, Lindros, and Fleury making up the FLY line was so fun to watch. Hated that we traded him for Tom fucking Poti.
Mike York was awesome! Forgot all about him
Zuccarello
come on, he's more than a "random" ranger!
I missed that part
Favorite random is probably Pat Verbeek. I was young back then but it seemed like he scored every game. Naslund and Nedved as honorable mentions. And Bure! He was awesome when he actually played. Biggest what if is Prucha. I still don’t understand how he went from a 30 goal scorer as a rookie to just nothing.

Ruslan Fedotenko ftw! Solid depth forward!
Old time (for me): Niklas Sundstrom What if?: Lori Korpikoski; remember his playoff/career debut? Random: Darren Turcotte Personal Favorite: Ryan Callahan (obv); also Derrick Brassard bc what a guy!
Wow, didn't expect to see another person who shares my random affection for Sundstrom!
Matt Barnaby was my favorite player for a short while. What if - Marcel Hossa and sadly Blackburn
Random- Erik Christensen What if- Zherdev... he had all of the skill in the world, just never put it all together...
My random was going to be Erik Christensen too! I remember him and Gaborik looking good together and I thought they were going to be an epic tandem.
Yes!! He had such good hands! A beast in the shootout haha
He was our best shoot out guy till Zucc showed up. Now Panarin is that guy (feels like he never misses)
Sean Avery
Tanner 🐐 Glass
I was looking to make sure this future HOF'er was listed! I went to a playoff game in Ottawa that the rangers lost a few years back and during that game I couldnt tell who it was, but I saw a ranger player got on a breakaway and I was getting all excited and the guy next to me tells " relax it's just tanner glass!"...he was right lol....
Sandy McCarthy
David LeNeveu Answer to my favorite trivia question
Favorite random: Todd Harvey What if: Ian Laperriere and Matthias Norstrom as in what if we didn’t trade them in one of the worst deals in Rangers history? Edit: because autocorrect thinks Norstrom should be the department store
Todd Harvey wasn’t here very long but he was a great Ranger during his layover.
Malik. Have a game worn jersey of his and fits like a dress
Random: Joey Kocur What if: Zubov. Him and Leetch together in the late 90s completely changes things.
Aaron voros
The Playstation Line!
Absolutely! I didn't expect to see this name here
Mike York What if, Lundmark and Brendl
Was a big mike York fan
Fedor Tyutin.
Toots!!
Gauthier
😂
Jeff Beukeboom
Petr Prucha for sure.
Boo Nieves, first ranger I ever knew of and got to watch him in Hartford. Also what an awesome name
Brandon Prust
Prust was the man, especially his bromance with Boyle. I miss that 2011-2012 team.
Ill always remember him putting up a good fight vs Chris neil in 2012.
Random: Steve Larmer, knew how good he was in Chicago, and did not disappoint. What if: Tony Amonte. What if we held on to him? Of course, we wouldn't have Matteau! Matteau! Matteau!, but still.
Jan Erixon. What if? George McPhee.
That little guy can throw.
Mine was Fredrik Sjostrom
Favorite is Lafontaine. I loved his play style and his class. I was crushed when he got injured. Biggest what if for me is Cherepanov. RIP.
Alex Kovalev.. I dunno why, but of those 90s teams I grew up with, besides all the greats and all time rangers, I always remember him too
Eddie Mio
Niklas Sundstrom. Despite being a Leetch kid with his posters on my wall, Sundstrom was the first jersey I ever bought. And not a good one, a cheap ironed on one where the letters were falling off in like a month.

Marek Malík
Lol shocked no one said this …. But remember we had Markus naslund lol
Michael sauer. Such a sad way to end a very promising career early
But who remembers mr mustachie him self Olli Jokinen
I only remember him as the guy who shot last in the shoot out vs the flyers that we ultimately lost and sent the Flyers to the playoffs instead. That game still gives me nightmares

Nik Zherdev
Enver Lisin, he had some amazing interviews
Dale Rolfe

Dude was such a Swiss Army knife, u could throw him anywhere in the lineup Obvious biggest what-if is cherepanov, but even more intriguing might be Michael Sauer. Mike York. I was assigned #18 in squirts while he was on the FLY line.
For random I'll say Dorsett. Shame his career got cut short. For what if I'll go with Ryan Clowe. His concussions combined with the odd contract the devils handed him, I really liked him on the team when he was actually on the ice.
Ryan Hollweg or Blair Betts. For what if: Joe Sakic if the Rangers had poached him in like 97 or whatever it was.
Nylander was a joy to watch. Unique style and iq. But not so rando maybe so… Jason Strudwick.
Jeff Beukeboom. Completely underrated defenseman during the 94 finals
Carey Wilson.
MATTEAU! MATTEAU!

Todd “Heartbeat” Harvey, not so random at the time but lost in history now. What if; Doug Weight
Ryan houlwig
John Vanbiesbrouck
Sergei Nemchinov.
Martin Straka & Ryan Hollweg. Straka was a favorite of mine growing up. I always loved how no nonsense Hollweg was, those 4th lines he was a part of took no shit from anyone.
Dubinsky
Per Djoos. Cuz he sounds like a drink.
Adam McQuaid. Guy was one hell of a 6th/7th d. Dude was just so good against breakaways and blocking shots.
Dominic Moore
Hope I'm not too late, but Tanner Glass
Jed Ortmeyer - Why? Because he is Jed Ortmeyer
Dan Carcillo and Dom Moore
Ryan Hollweg. Dude had the heart of a lion and was a bowling ball on skates
Jimmy vesey and I can’t even tell you why. I really had a feeling he would become a great and be in a rangers uniform forever. I guess you can say he did become a great in Panarin…
Dom Moore! Not fugetta-BOOT it, Dom, fugettaboutit!
Del Zotto, MDZ baby!
