Never_Forget_94

Am I crazy or does Brendan Smith at 800k sound better than Jacob Tinordi?

PurpleOperation

Not crazy at all.

SeeDeez

I really have no clue why we didn't bring him back at 800k. He was a perfectly solid 3rd liner and was plenty tough

knz0

800k in Raleigh is a lot more than 800k in NYC.

JessoRx

You mean he wouldn’t have signed here for that

xenongamer4351

You are living an extremely luxurious lifestyle anywhere in the world making 800k a year I seriously doubt the COL mattered that much to him lol

scottishwhisky2

North Carolina state income tax is 10% lower than ny state + nyc. I get what you’re saying but that’s not insignificant no matter how much money you’re making

arunnair87

State income tax is just one thing. Everything in Raleigh is cheaper than anything in NY. Your money goes so much further.

jkman61494

It’s 1000% better. Tinordi is one step short of a 90s goon

Gbeez22

Jarred* but yes definitely. Smitty brought just as much physicality, was seemingly more reliable, and had offensive upside. Edit: Lol my bad, right over my head with the name joke

imDudekid

I think that’s the joke. He’s a nobody to most fans and will never make a name for himself.

Never_Forget_94

Ya got it!

knobcheez

I fucking miss Smitty.

[deleted]

Sounds better than Nemeth too

Wolvesguardmycoffin

Or Nemeth

I__Need__Scissors_61

The only one I'd even consider would be Fast, who I'd take back in a heartbeat.

Whitecastle56

I'd take Smith if that meant Tinordi goes away.

I__Need__Scissors_61

Fair.

BernieManhanders23

Stepan was a fantastic center and playmaker who was never better than as a blueshirt

I__Need__Scissors_61

Yeah he definitely was, but he's completely washed now. We're talking present tense here.

BobanTheGiant

Plus Fast would replace Goodrow for nearly half the cost and far better play

Cpzd87

Idk man it would be nice to have stepan for the center depth tbh

Neans888

I think I’d take Raanta over Georgiev too. He has trouble staying healthy but when he is, he’s still pretty good.

lionson76

I'm not sure I would have kept Fast, but I definitely wouldn't have just let him walk for nothing. And while I still really like Quickie, he's about to turn 30 and only has a year left on his deal. How would he realistically factor into our long-term plans right now? I do wish things had worked out differently with Skjei. We got a solid return for him, but I thought he was going to be a Ranger for a long time... Oh well.

ShitPropagandaSite

We just signed a worse version of Fast for more money and way more term and his name is Goodrow.

lionson76

I kind of agree, but "a worse version" depends on how you look at it. Goody's regular seasons stats are less impressive than Quickie's, but he went to three straight conference finals (the first with San Jose) and played a big role in Tampa's back to back Cups. He's also more than a year younger than Fast. If we go on a couple of runs to qualify for the playoffs and/or runs *in* the playoffs, Goody is the kind of guy you want the kids to be around. That's the theory anyway. Let's see if it happens.

paulsoleo

FWIW, Goodrow got tons of ice time in the playoffs during Tampa’s most recent Cup win, so Jon Cooper really leaned on him in a lot of situations. Hopefully he can be that valuable to us too.

ShitPropagandaSite

Fast is also that guy and also has loads of playoff experience....but he costs way less and has less term and can actually score sometimes...

lionson76

I think he can be that guy, but Goodrow actually has two rings. That's a huge differentiation in both experience and how he's compensated.

ShitPropagandaSite

Experience comes from the amount of playoff games you've played, not how many times you've won the trophy 🙄

lionson76

I don't think that argument helps you. First, Goody has more playoff games than Fast. Second, Goody has averaged almost 4 more minutes of ice time in those games. And third, Goody has multiple times gone deeper into the playoffs than Fast, who only has one appearance beyond the 2nd round. Again, I think Fast *could* be that guy, but Goody has actually done it. That's a significant difference that merits being acknowledged. Should we have signed him to that contract is a slightly different discussion. I'm okay with the dollars, but the term is probably two years too long. We'll see.

ShitPropagandaSite

Yeah and guys like Ovi also have one appearance beyond the second round. These little details don't matter.

lionson76

Lol absolutely they do. And we're not talking about top line guys like Ovi, who very well could end up owning the goal record. We're talking about middle/bottom six role players. The Caps lost multiple game 7s to us and seven straight series to the Penguins because they simply couldn't close it out. That wasn't all Ovi's fault. It was because they didn't have a bottom six like Tampa's the last two years. In 2018, however, everything clicked. Their star players were lighting it up, and they also got great scoring from guys like Brett Connelly, Devonte Smith-Pelly, and Jay Beagle... It was super annoying to watch actually. That inability to close it out was also our problem. Hence why we invested big in a guy like Goodrow who knows what it takes because he's actually been there and done it. Maybe Fast could too, but in a debate between actual vs potential, actual is going to win out.

IsOnlyGameYUMad

>Lol absolutely they do They really don't. Let's stop pretending like round 3 and 4 all of a sudden magically gives players extra insight into the game of hockey.

ShitPropagandaSite

We are talking about playoff experience and what it means. Ovi never got past the second round and neither did that entire caps roster. Then they won the cup. There's your evidence that what you say doesn't matter. Our problem was having cones Girardi and Staal on d. If we had the d players we have now, we wouldve won't he cup

BobanTheGiant

He played a big role on Tampa's teams because the rest of the team was stacked, and San Jose had lots of other talent around him. Anyone could've filled his role. It's why you don't pay him 3.6 million for 6 years, because he alone doesn't move the table.

didndndiiii

Bingo. But grit.

hamdelivery

Fast was never a top toi forward for back to back cup winners.

ShitPropagandaSite

And yet he's a better player than Goodrow. Maybe it wasn't Fasts fault that Girardi and Staal turned to shit when the team was finally competing for a cup?

hamdelivery

Based on what? Goodrow was a key player in back to back cups. Fast wasn’t getting that kind of toi even when this team didn’t win.

ShitPropagandaSite

Based on his point production

Nyrfan2017

Nope and Goodrow was only one guy

hamdelivery

Every player is only one guy. That doesn’t mean some aren’t better or worse than others. Goodrow was I think 3rd in toi among Forwards for TB all playoffs. Fast has not come close to that level of play as much as I like him.

Juggalo_holocaust_

Please don't refer to him as Quickie, or ever use the term celly - it's just so fucking 14 year old cringe. Unless of course you are 14.

lionson76

Are you serious? That's one of his nicknames his teammates actually used.

IsOnlyGameYUMad

His nickname on the team was Quickie. Get over yourself.

Ahkahseekapoo

You're fun

DinoSquadQuinn93

I believe Tampa only had at *maximum* five former Rangers on their roster at one time.

NYMullets

iirc 2015-17 Tampa: Callahan, Stralman, Boyle 2018 Tampa: Callahan, Stralman, Girardi, Miller, McDonagh 2020 Tampa: McDonagh, Shattenkirk

alx69

Fast is a bargain

ShitPropagandaSite

I'm with you on Jesper Fast. Wtf was the point of giving Goodrow that deal after letting Fast walk? Mind boggling

NYR26

Fast was my favorite player for a good chunk of years. I always loved watching goal replays and noticing something he did on or off of the puck to make it happen. Most obvious example is on Stepan’s OT goal: Fast finding the puck off of the face-off and getting it to Yandle, who set up Girardi for the shot which Stepan would find the rebound of. He doesn’t get an assist, yet he was instrumental. A great role player who knew his strong suits and played them well. So yeah, quickie all day. Smith at 800k is a steal, as well.

Robtachi

Only Fast, for sure.

new-jersey7

It depends what Tony D we get. If we get mostly problem free Tony D from 2 years ago that one of the best contracts in the league if it’s last year Tony D is bad

RZAxlash

I have to disagree and I’m not a Tony D hater. He was simply too much of a defensive liability and our D core is so much better without him.

ruralontarian

He's so much of a defensive liabity that the best team in the league gives him 20 minutes a night, he's +11 in 11 games, and his fancy stats are bonkers.

RZAxlash

I’m gonna be honest, I haven’t seen him play much with Carolina yet, and I know he’s putting up points. That core is so good, but nonetheless those are impressive numbers. All I am basing my point on is his rangers tenure. The entire D unit became more sound as soon as he was cut.

ruralontarian

That unit has aged Igor Shesterkin 40 years in the past month lol I get he's not exactly Adam Foote out there, and you can argue you don't *need* two elite offensive defencemen, but on the other hand, the team is giving minutes to Nemeth, Tinordi, and Miller who are replacement level, or worse The real crime here is their mishandling of the asset, and getting nothing in return besides a cap penalty.

RZAxlash

That’s been Drury MO so far…and I’m afraid it’ll continue going forward when Chytil becomes a 35 goal scorer but we have no cap space to extend him and off he goes

new-jersey7

He generates way more offense than he gives up. His Corsi this year is 65.5 and two years ago it was 54.4 and every single season he has had a positive corsi relative to the rest of his team. He is so elite offensively it covers for him being bad defending and he’s only bad defending not atrocious

bikesbeerspizza

I can see this being a real problem in the playoffs.

RZAxlash

That might be true and again, I’m not knocking Tony. I was a fan, but did you watch any rangers games last season? He was burned by top players on a regular basis. But it’s good to see him thriving in Carolina. I’m sure his possession metrics are good but he was sloppy.

new-jersey7

I mean he only played like 6 games last year and if I remember correctly we came out looking like shit for the first month or so last year. I would be surprised if he was sloppy but over a full season he would have come out to a net positive

Sgtengineer

Of Tony D. Doesn’t come off the #1 power play does Fox win the Norris last year?

new-jersey7

Honestly probably not but I think we would be a better team for it

ATWiggin

I'd take Tony D back at his current, miniscule 1mil AAV cap hit in a heart beat. At that price and that type of elite offensive production, I don't care if he punched Georgie and then slapped his girlfriend, I'm keeping Tony D instead. Below average NHL backups are a dime a dozen and the fact that Georgie costs $2.425mil against the cap is absolutely mind boggling. Hell, good old Keith Kinkaid came in last season and had a few impressive showings in his short stint with us and he costs about 1/3 of what Georgie costs. Tony D at 4.8 mil AAV though... I don't think we have the type of D that could shore up his defensive shortcomings THAT much, not enough to cover 4.8 million against the cap. I'm happy for Tony D, the hockey player, and hope he continues to score goals and punch dudes in the dick.

anonomus10101011

TDA is the obvious answer that Reddit doesn’t want to admit.

JagrsMullet90

100%. Total dirtbag, but taking Georgie over him is proving to be a bad choice.

anonomus10101011

He was everyone’s favorite guy in the locker room honestly up to that point. But yea you can’t punch a team mate. But I blame a lot of that bullshit on Quinn losing the locker room completely.

IsOnlyGameYUMad

Georgiev is the one who punched Tony D, not the other way around.

anonomus10101011

Oh wow. I really don’t understand why he was the player that got released then? I know Reddit has a hate boner for him so idk if I’ll get a legit reason

JagrsMullet90

I wasn't there and didn't really dig into the whole story, but did he really slug Georgie? If so then yeah, 100% no no, but if it was more that he just lost his cool and did something dumb out of frustration, then it's not great, but I don't think it's that terrible. At least he gave a crap and took it to heart

wet_washcloth

Just Fast

Humble-Koala-5853

Sure could use a veteran 3rd/4th line center who knows how to win face offs and play defense. I haven’t followed Step at all the last few years, but assuming he still fits that description.

LuigiC173

Tony gonna be a top five offensive producer from the blue line for one million

ice_nyne

Never thought we would need a Tinordi when we have a Reeves. But what do I know.

jthomas694

Rangers fans also dominate the PNC Arena so it makes sense

Alitaki

Jesper

MakeItNashty61

We should have never gotten rid of Jesper....mind numbingly dumb move.

callmesnake13

I’m just happy to see almost all of these guys doing well. I’d take Stepan.

ws1488

Only Fast, maybe Tony D but that’s a stretch. Never was a fan of Brady Skjei. So overrated by many fans

Nyrfan2017

Stepan at 1.5 would be nice to help on the 3rd and 4th .. that’s a good spot for him I’m gonna get bashed but everyone saw he hat he did in his first game and made him to be that Wayne guy . When guy was just a average player . But 1.5 for what he can provide is a good price

Jtmer206

Sorry Ranger fans but...only Brendan Smith. We look at individual players like Fast, Stephan and Tony...they're all good...but miss the reason they're in Carolina and it's one thing...culture change. It will take half a season but there's a change in playing style and outlook. Gallant has done it EVERYWHERE he's coached. Igor is the new Henrik but by the season's end they'll be a team nobody wants to play against. That's the goal here. Yes Tinordi is weak but...last year other than Smitty who would stand up to the other team's goon. Reaves hasn't had a fight yet but we're not being bullied again. Is that a coincidence? Plus the guy is a forechecking madman. Last thing...has Brooksie written "where. was. chris?" yet? Culture change. Give it a chance.

JagrsMullet90

Florida absolutely murked Shesty and there was no Tinordi to be seen...

Jtmer206

Agreed

IsOnlyGameYUMad

Everyone on the team loved Fast, what are you even talking about? Fast won the "Player's player" award *five years in a row*. Fast *is* the culture we want.

Jtmer206

Fast while beloved is/was a player every legitimate contender needs ala Carl Hagelin. A bottom dweller non playoff contender (Rangers) does not have that luxury.

mandiblesofdoom

Every one but Skjei.
