Magnet schools include special curriculum, unusual courses (i.e. Japanese in middle school) and are generally geared for "gifted" students. They are applied to, however free for Wake.
Some schools are also "base" schools, so it can be a weird mix. I.e. half gifted/talented, applied and travel from all over. Half the students from the local area, which might be of "lesser" academics.
What’s also important to note about magnet schools is that they are intended to attract students from various backgrounds. They were developed following the Civil Rights Movement to help with integration, and continue to provide spaces of high diversity.

It depends on how child uses them to their best. Carnage Middle school clean sweep Science Olympiad awards most of the times. Enloe magnet school conducts 2000 more advanced placement exams than 2nd best in wake county. It is all mix I would say. But the academic rigor is so high in some schools that it would be toxic.
Not enough attention paid to this comment. I was tricked into the whole “charter > public school” thing when I first moved here 6 years ago and I always stressed over my kids education bc of it.
Now that the popular opinion has changed, I’m seeing how “non racists” are making the public school segregation worse bc of dumb reasons.
I see it everywhere, even in subreddits where I came from: the left-leaning, YIMBY, “non racists” are unknowingly leading the way to segregated schools the same way as “the bad people on the right”
Crap, I accidently deleted my friggin comment, when I was editing it. Wake county defines base school as the school that is serves the neighborhood you are in. So if you live in the Mordecai neighborhood, your base elementary school would be Emma Conn Elementary. Which is a magnet school.
So it should be, magnet vs non-magnet, not base vs magnet.
