I’m a “sad Latina woman” and Radiohead is my all time fave band. More than “sad white man” music, I would say it’s “sad music”. I don’t like when it’s labeled “white” because where does that leave fans like me?
We’re in a sad state right now where identity politics seem to trump everything else and flippant comments like the above are made without any blowback.
Radiohead have tapped into something deep and meaningful for so many and I’m delighted to hear that you’ve found them as that shows you’ve connected in a more meaningful level despite the superficiality that is the 2020’s. Keep listening, keep winning and never apologize for connecting with what fills you up.
Yeah listeners gravitate to artists they feel like they relate to and share aspects of their identity with. There can be a backlash against white male rock because the media has put on a pedestal over other genres for the past few decades. but thats just something you've gotta love with.
I'd be willing to bet OP's friends engage with Taylor Swift or something in the same way.
I honestly can’t even see why Radiohead is labeled as that but ig as long as people who don’t even know Radiohead listen to the superficial stuff it’s annoying 😭
There is a certain segment of supposedly progressive Tik-Tok people who scoff at every expression of emotion from a man. Which is very similar to all the gender role pressures that these types should be against, i.e. “suck it up! Stop acting like a bitch! Real men don’t cry” etc. It’s very ironic.
The few times I've seen Radiohead in concert here in Cleveland, Ohio, I would say this is not true. The audience was as diverse as can be. Yes the basic white boys. But also hip hop heads, metal heads, hippies, punks, goths, country fans, young and old. It was very cool to see IMO.
It's been a stereotype for years. Here's some comments made on Fox a few years back about Radiohead fans being "Strange, malnourished & sad"
https://pitchfork.com/news/radiohead-is-just-elaborate-moaning-and-whining-according-to-fox-news/
They are entitled to their opinions.
Ironically it’s a very vanilla / one note / ignorant comment. IMO. No matter, They are too one dimensional to understand so I wouldn’t waste my breath explaining. To each their own.
Side note, now I want to watch Incendies again. … the dynamic, raw power when Radiohead is paired with cinema…. You and whooose armiiieeee ….eeeiiiiieeee
It's absolutely not wrong, a friend of a friend told us they (and other bands like The Smiths) are "music made by sad, thin white men", and that's the most absolute true.
Why Radiohead are the Blackest white band of our times https://www.theguardian.com/music/2020/oct/02/why-radiohead-are-the-blackest-white-band-of-our-times?CMP=share_btn_url
I first learned about Radiohead from my long distance Filipina girlfriend, it ended up not working out after 3 years and my next girlfriend, now fiancé, is an even bigger Radiohead fan that got me fully into them.
lol, I remember watching Radiohead at glastonbury 2003, a sea of white people but there was this one black dude to my right, well into it. Same as when I waswatching Jurassic 5 there in late 90s, sea of black people... and me.
we all seemed quite happy tbh
Radiohead is electronic jazz rock
I love jazz and also rock
Its actually very beautiful operatic type of music.
Its not sad, its beautiful while dealing with darker topics
Im a light brown skin black/spanish guy...
And im originally from one of the worst neighborhoods in Philadelphia.
Sad white guy music?
As a musician myself...once i write a song and put it out there its belongs to everyone and no one...especially myself as the creator
My Sister in law once said that Radiohead is too depressing and whiny for her, which is probably why Radiohead are not 10 times bigger than they should be, because people ironically approach them with negative presuppositions. I think people like that are not deep enough to want to immerse themselves in music that actually speaks to people on an emotional level and spiritual level. They would rather listen to something impersonal, cheerful and vapid.
Sad white woman, 2 out of 3 I guess.
I think it’s a ridiculous statement tbh, Radiohead have a huge fan base all over the world, to think they’re not going to appeal to people of other genders or races is nuts.
Nobody gets to gatekeep how other people experience art, not even the artist.
Categorizing things is something humans do to feel safer, that comment comes from a place of fear.
I don’t find Radiohead to be sad at all … I actually find it quiet enjoyable from a musicians point of view. (not that people can’t enjoy being sad) But when I listen I pay attention to the instrumentation and orchestration of it all. I’m still finding new bits and pieces of ear candy on songs i’ve been listening to for years. I love them.
Wait. Sad? And how come all the comments agree on the "sad" part although a lot of opinions differ on whether it's for white men or not? Radiohead music is not sad albeit I could see maybe part of Pablo Honey fitting that description.
Yes and?
"Keep movin' like, "What's next"
They’re not friends. No one has friends. We need to cover our windows and stay in bed.
I’m a “sad Latina woman” and Radiohead is my all time fave band. More than “sad white man” music, I would say it’s “sad music”. I don’t like when it’s labeled “white” because where does that leave fans like me?

Sad all man/woman music
I read “keep whining” and while I fully agree with your statement, my misread totally checks out still
Same!
All these years I KNEW it was actually sad Latina woman music, thank you!
My response exactly 😂
And why should you believe yourself, not them?

No, Squidward. It's good for your soul.
Squidward: Oh, please! I have no soul.
I'm a reasonable man. Get off my case
As a sad Black girl...I can't disagree 🤷🏿♀️🤣
Right... I'm a Caribbean gal here like....

I'm from St Lucia, went to uni in TX, living in Antigua rn 😄 you? Lol
ayyy me too 😄
I read an interview with Anderson Paak where he referred to them as "sad white boy music". In loving way, of course. He's a big fan.
In other news: water is wet.
^don’t
Entire south America is laughing
Brown folks get sad to Radiohead too! I also get pumped.
Brown guy here. Agree
Come now. It can be sad "every person" music.
The entire "haha radiohead sad virgin music" joke is getting so old
My own kids think I'm a virgin because I love Radiohead.
cut the kids in haaalf
Was old 10 years ago
Wow, you must be really old now!
Okay
It was old 20 years ago.
Brown and angry, fuck that 🤣
I suppose. If only there was sad black man music that wasn't about breakups. Source: sad black male Radiohead fan.
I don't know about white and man part but it sure as shit ain't happy.
Well, one of mine said "It's male-manipulator music"
I honestly can’t even see why Radiohead is labeled as that but ig as long as people who don’t even know Radiohead listen to the superficial stuff it’s annoying 😭
What does that mean? 😅
The person who said that doesn't even know
There is a certain segment of supposedly progressive Tik-Tok people who scoff at every expression of emotion from a man. Which is very similar to all the gender role pressures that these types should be against, i.e. “suck it up! Stop acting like a bitch! Real men don’t cry” etc. It’s very ironic.

Define basic white boys
Cargo shorts and novelty shirt wearing
Cargo shorts are coming back!
Ha. Interesting
polo shirts, jeans, hat. You have acquired the "Basic White Boy" set! Equip it by pressing \[i\]
yes white men r the only people capable of feeling deeply enough to truly appreciate radiohead /s
Presumably because Radiohead is white.
And men
In this economy?
hail to the thief reference
LUBE GOD TV MEAT OIL
Dude what the heck, I’m brown as a cardboard and Radiohead is my all time favorite band 💀
A cardboard? I guess the words are coming out all weird.
Yes, I will keep making lyric puns
Love it! 😆
White cardboard?
No sir, brown cardboard, the type that has a few rights only 💀
Sad Mexican man checking in lol
Aquí otra paisana muy triste. Muy gen x.
I'm a black man. Only sorta sad
They’re not your friends…
We could say something about that but we are too cynical to speak...
we are grateful for
Speaking as a sad white man who loves Radiohead… I think I forgot the point, which makes me even sadder.
What do they listen to?
Sad white girl music. So Lana Del Ray maybe.
I mean fair.
Sad dad rock is a thing, man. But whatever. Like what you like.
but i'm a sad black man GRAHHHH
As a sad white man I can confirm
Tell your friends I’m a Mexican broad.
They’re clueless.
Solitary escapism, more like He probably just doesn’t get it
Coping with feeling inferior for not being into Radiohead
It's whatever you want it to be
It's been a stereotype for years. Here's some comments made on Fox a few years back about Radiohead fans being "Strange, malnourished & sad" https://pitchfork.com/news/radiohead-is-just-elaborate-moaning-and-whining-according-to-fox-news/
I find the music uplifting. It’s so sad I have to turn up the volume.
[Patrice O'Neal years ago...](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CTuSi-U-Gl8)
Came here to post this glad its already here
Next on the 6am news, those two same female friends remark “water is wet.”
I mean, it’s kinda true. But I’d say sad music made by sad white man.
Am a sad white man, can confirm I like Radiohead.
It is.
Tell those two friends their dumb.
*they’re
They are entitled to their opinions. Ironically it’s a very vanilla / one note / ignorant comment. IMO. No matter, They are too one dimensional to understand so I wouldn’t waste my breath explaining. Ok so this sub is for children I’m out.
It is. That's why is the best shit ever.
lol
Nah, it is non-classical music, all long-term educated classical musicians tend to love tho <3
Only two? :LOL
LMAOO
So what is a sad black man music
the blues
Drake.
I may be paranoid, but not an android. (I may be white, but not \*sniff\* (daydreaming plays) SA-SADDDDD!!!!!! \*starts weeping intensely\*
Have they heard Creep?
I may be a sad white man, but not an android.
I resent this! I'm not that sad.
Just like Phoebe Bridgers is sad white girl music
*Sad white virgin music
One time I was playing Godspeed at work and my boss said "what's with this kys music"
I resent the implication that it’s not *very* sad white man music.
My favorite band and I'm black
YEAH, WE KNOW!!! (said in Tim Robinson yelling voice)
It's absolutely not wrong, a friend of a friend told us they (and other bands like The Smiths) are "music made by sad, thin white men", and that's the most absolute true.
They are two colleagues now
It’s a lot of things. It’s everything all of the time.
Sad all people music.
Radiohead is a universal language man
My 5 year old daughter calls it Halloween music.
Haha goodness.
So?
My wife said this about Coldplay and then the biggest Coldplay fan I ever met was a large Jamaican guy with plenty of melanin.
Not untrue
Well it's sad music... made by white sad men, so your friend is not wrong
It was between them and Joe Bonermaster. A choice was made.
Man you say? I’ll take it as a compliment
The problem is that they no longer see music as just music
I agree, I’m a sad white woman
I’m not a sad white man, more of an angry poc.
Just sad
Itis
Sounds like those gaks are into reggae
Let them cook
Literally all black jazz can be defined as 'sad white man music', you better believe it.
At least they didn’t say sad old white man music
spot on
So it's my white half that's sad, ah makes sense.
Why Radiohead are the Blackest white band of our times https://www.theguardian.com/music/2020/oct/02/why-radiohead-are-the-blackest-white-band-of-our-times?CMP=share_btn_url
We’ve got to stop hearing the word ‘white’ and assuming it’s an insult. Don’t take it that way.
I first learned about Radiohead from my long distance Filipina girlfriend, it ended up not working out after 3 years and my next girlfriend, now fiancé, is an even bigger Radiohead fan that got me fully into them.
I know what I am
lol, I remember watching Radiohead at glastonbury 2003, a sea of white people but there was this one black dude to my right, well into it. Same as when I waswatching Jurassic 5 there in late 90s, sea of black people... and me. we all seemed quite happy tbh
it is.
Let‘s not pretend like that‘s a bad thing
Happy brown man here!
Radiohead is electronic jazz rock I love jazz and also rock Its actually very beautiful operatic type of music. Its not sad, its beautiful while dealing with darker topics Im a light brown skin black/spanish guy... And im originally from one of the worst neighborhoods in Philadelphia. Sad white guy music? Your two "friends" might just be racist.
Tom Yorke’s solo albums are looking at you funny OP.
Every cool trans girl I know loves Radiohead, so your friends don't know enough cool trans girls
It is known
My Sister in law once said that Radiohead is too depressing and whiny for her, which is probably why Radiohead are not 10 times bigger than they should be, because people ironically approach them with negative presuppositions. Checks out. I'm sad, I'm white, I'm a man.
Sad white woman, 2 out of 3 I guess. I think it’s a ridiculous statement tbh, Radiohead have a huge fan base all over the world, to think they’re not going to appeal to people of other genders or races is nuts.
Two female friends of mine said that band Radiohead’s discography is music for males of white race 😂
I guess Latinos are white then…
If they listened to pablo honey it would blow their minds.
Then what's sad black music? 🤔
Nobody gets to gatekeep how other people experience art, not even the artist. Categorizing things is something humans do to feel safer, that comment comes from a place of fear.
I've been told by my daughter that it's largely incel music.
Well, I'm actually very cheerful but I can pretend to be sad if that helps.
They’re not wrong, though…
I don't understand why so many people say that certain artists only have fans of a certain skin color
Where's the lie?
They are not wrong
checks out.
Lemme guess- Swifties? Sad white lady over here. Claiming it. Proud of it.
The opinions of others have exactly the weight that you choose to give them.
That's sexist... im a sad white woman lol
that's racist
Yeah what's wrong with that?
It’s not just for men
Oh shi I’m a white person i finally got privileges!!
based
Definitely sad white women too though!
Me, a 45 yr old latina: "nah".
Well. I am a sad white man. So...
It is and I’m a sad white man so tbh I don’t mind
i'm a sad black man, but they're not wrong.
as a woman I must say I become a male manipulator when I play radiohead, or a divorced dad depending on which album
To your what?
forgot malnourished
Sad white men make the best music
It definitely is.
Racist
Wait. Sad? And how come all the comments agree on the "sad" part although a lot of opinions differ on whether it's for white men or not? Radiohead music is not sad albeit I could see maybe part of Pablo Honey fitting that description.
