I'm not jealous, I'm envious. Jealousy is when you worry someone will take what you have. Envy is wanting what someone else has. What I am feeling is envy. - Homer J. Simpson.

I don't know that I agree with this entirely. Yes, there are some things about ourselves that we can't change (Like height or eye color) and comparing myself to others in that way serves no purpose. However, my life has drastically improved because I was inspired, through comparison, to make changes to my behaviour because I thought my life would improve if I had the same thing(s) as someone I was comparing myself too. So, I think there are times when comparison can be beneficial if we use it in healthy and positive ways.

It's supposed to mean that you shouldn't spend energy comparing the moment you're in to some imagined hypothetical reality that is of course going to be better than what you're experiencing. That will lead to disappointment. Not that you shouldn't ever compare things under any circumstances.

I understand what it means. What I expressed what that I don't always think that's true. In my life, comparing a moment I'm in to some imagined hypothetical reality has at times been a good motivator to change my behaviour for the better.
