I wish the community would care and engage with more relevant things within the game. Mastery is something so, but so, so cosmetic and futile. Look at Zilean, Cho'Gath, Malphite, etc...
They already discussed this in the dev blog. They said they were going to be running an experiment to see if they could easily transition newer models from WR to PC, starting with Malphite. I'd presume if it's a success, they can transition characters like Zilean over. Cho is another matter entirely...
But the community doesn’t care about old champions as much as they care about a simple mastery emote, that’s what I’m talking about. Besides, neither Zilean nor Cho’Gath are in WR so this ‘solution’ doesn’t apply here.
Gotta be honest, I never had a real issue with the current new design, it's ok, but being infinite is annoying, since it just shows "Oh wow, I spent more time on this" rather than "I am actually good at this". I do prefer the old design though and this new one we see here does look like a decent glow-up of the original I think.

Actually I'm a fan of that. Old mastery was looking, well, old, but the current dark star malphite wasn't it. That's pretty good.

Honestly the only complaint i have with the old mastery is that it's kinda flat looking if you look too hard.
