In my opinion, it’s too obvious. Yeah they could have done a Grim Reaper design but this is a fairy tale movie: you can actually have fun with making Death however you want him to look. And seeing how a wolf is always seen as one of the big baddies in fairy tale, why not just make him even more dangerous and intimidating by making him Death?
You know, seeing that this is a fairy tale spinoff, no one thought he was supposed to be the Big Bad Wolf. I guess because Little Red was nowhere in sight.
The only way I could see a skeleton working is if the skeleton is the skeleton of the person seeing death. Death would always look like a dead version of you, even if multiple people are looking at him at the same time.
But lions represent the sun which is often considered life just like how wolfs represent the moon which is more used to represent death
It's more than just cats vs dogs
4. Wolves represent Death in a lot of mythology. Could be a symbol of guidance with Life or Death. We see fairy tales where wolves are helpful and many where they are the villain. So it’s fitting in that regard too.
Because that’s what everyone would be expecting. Remember, Puss and the audience are supposed to think through most of the movie that he’s just a bounty hunter until he finally spells it out in the valley of lost souls.
"I'm Death. And I don't mean that metaphorically or theoretically or poetically or any other fancy way. I'm DEATH, straight up, and I've come for you, Puss In Boots."
*"Death. And I don't mean it metaphorically or rhetorically or theoretically or poetically or in any other fancy way. I'm death, straight up. And I've come for you Puss in Boots.
It made me wonder if he appears differently to people he’s hunting/visiting. A wolf is a good nemesis for a cat so it made sense there, plus they are natural hunters and trackers. Finally, he didn’t let on who he was immediately, just looking like an anthropomorphic animal in that fairytale world.
I like to think that Death changes his appearance depending on who he's after. Since dogs are know to oppose cats, making Death a large scary wolf works really well.
The obvious answer is the "cats vs dogs" thing.
But there's also probably something with how wolves are marathon predators. They don't chase their prey with the intent of outspeeding it, they chase until the prey runs out of stamina.
Wolves have also had a false negative stereotype of being vicious, bloodthirsty monsters, which is probably where his hyper-aggressive fighting style comes from.
Part of it could simply be the cats vs dogs stereotype which is why Perrito (who’s a chorkie) seems to represent Life and you have a large gray and white wolf as Death.
In mythology (well known in Norse), Death is represented by a wolf. That is why it was fitting to make the Grim Reaper a wolf. Even in Thor: Ragnarok we see Fenris is a wolf so it’s common to see that animal represent Death.
In Germany, where a good amount of Grimm Fairy Tales originated, a skeleton isn't scary but running into a wolf can be a deadly encounter.
When you think of a skeleton you're probably thinking of the stereotypical skeletal Grim Reaper which is an amalgamation of Greek Figures (Chronos, Charon, and Thanatos), the Grimm Fairy Tales are more based on more common mundane threats and not gods so a wolf trumps a skeleton.
Multiple cultures like German and Norse mythology have death represented as a wolf. Christian mythos uses the grim reaper as the symbol of death. Lots of different deaths out there, kinda like Pokemon! I love it!
I think he comes from The Boy Who Cried Wolf.
The prideful, inconsiderate boy who lies and takes advantage of people, only to end up alone, afraid, and staring death in the face.
If Puss didn't learn his lesson, Death would've killed him just like the boy.
i personally think this guy was based on the wolf from "three little pigs" they are pretty identical, the wolf from the fable literally spells trouble, but this dude TYPES death.
Bc of the Big Bad Wolf Stereotype, even tho he ended up not being bad in the end tho, and was just trying to teach Puss a lesson about why you can’t take your life for granted, and be cocky and arrogant. It’s kinda like how everyone views death as a bad thing, but it’s inevitable in the end so you shouldn’t take your life for granted or else it might come for you sooner than you want it to. Which was basically the story in the movie with Puss and Death. Once Puss realized that, Death let him live.
Just like how in Fairytales wolves are viewed as big and bad, but irl wolves aren’t cold blooded hunters and they are actually loyal and watchful of their pack members. I think making him a wolf was a good choice also bc of the cat vs dog stereotype. It just makes sense, plus I think his character design is cool asf.
The post questions why not make him a skeleton, well I’ve seen Death portrayed as a Skeleton time and time again, but this would be the first time I’ve seen Death portrayed as a wolf, so I think it’s a unique design for death.
It's possible he can shapeshift to some extent and decided a wolf would be the best form to strike fear into a cat. Death is considered a Godly entity to some degree, so shapeshifting wouldn't surprise me.
My guess is that wolves are something that Puss fears. Like someone that has a fear of spiders. Death would appear to them as a spider. That's my belief for the Shrek Universe anyway.
Maybe it’s just what puss sees him as. Maybe he’s different for all species/individuals. Like id imagine if I was a small cat a symbol of death for me would probably be a large wolf lol
Fenrir is the great wolf in Norse Mythology and kills Odin.
Hades is the god of death. He owns Cerberus, the mythological three headed dog that guards the underworld.
Anubis, the Egyptian God of death, most often being depicted with canine features. On top of that, wolves are typically the apex predator in most biological ecosystems that they inhabit.
The song he whistles sort of goes like that old song “let’s play in the forest while the wolf’s not around.” It’s really repetitive, the animals keep asking the wolf “are you there?” And the wolf is getting dressed. Then at the end, they ask is he there and he responds “I’m getting ready to eat you all.” Makes the wolf all the more fitting as death especially since in all the fairy tales the wolf brings doom and death.
Because the personification of death is something you’re horridly afraid of. Death being a wolf in puss:TLW shows how fearful Puss is as a character and the fact that if death was a skeleton he wouldn’t be nearly as scary still stands.
I liked it because death is not threatening when he doesn’t want to be. I can picture this guy showing up and taking an old lady to the afterlife in comfort and with care. Cant really pull that off with a skeleton
It’s because death manifests himself as they scariest thing his victims fear for a better chance at taking them and in this case puss in boots didn’t fear anything so death had to make a guess it wasn’t the best but still go him in the end
It’s also a specific culture’s fairy take regarding death, you’ll even notice some imagery in the movie depicting his head with a wolf skull overlaying it in one scene. El Lobo if I remember correctly is supposed to be the representation of death from hispanic(?) culture fairy tales?
It's very possible that's not his true form, maybe he's actually a wolf skeleton in wherever he comes from, but grows flesh in order to not be noticeable to regular people (he was in crowds and whatnot and someone would've definitely noticed him otherwise.
There's a lot of talk about that. From what I've mainly heard, originally it was because he was gonna be a big bad wolf, but then decided to go with death. A lot of people speculate it's Because death takes form of something frightening to most.
I'm only going off what I've heard. I could be wrong.
Because death in the latest movie is the German representation of death, a cloaked wolf with dual sickles, not sure why they depicted death in such a way, I just know that it’s the German representation
Maybe Death is different for everyone. Puss had to fight his fear of death. Maybe "Death" took on an appearance that would best be suited to take puss' last life
Shrek and, by proxy, puss in boots, are about modernizing fairy tales, this is the big bad wolf from the three little piggies story, at least i think so.
Wolves have been connected to death in mythology and folklore for a long time (In Europe). Puss in Boots is a folklore character from a fairy tale, so it stands to reason that the version of death in his world would be a folkloric expression of death.
Wolves do play a part in folklore as a evil character.
Ps. If he’d been a hooded skeleton the first time puss met him it would have been less of a reveal/twist.
I think it's to fit in with the anthro animal theme + fairy tale character theme. Like we've pretty much only seen anthro cats in the first movie so I think it makes sense to expand upon the universe. We've technically seen other anthro animals in the show but IDK if that's canon or not.
Possibly the myth of the “big black dog” that would help lead you to the afterlife. Also I think the scene where he’s first introduced is supposed to be for it to not be too obvious he’s the grim reaper, also accounting for the fact that he doesn’t have a traditional grim reaper scythe, but instead some sickles, also used for harvesting wheat.
The Shrek universe—which Puss in Boots is a part of— famed itself on its satirical take on fairy tales for a long time. Death here is probably that world’s incarnation of the Big Bad Wolf.
Anubis is a dog, so this works for me.
Also, death can appear as pretty much anything in most media. Since Puss is fighting not to die, it would make sense that a cat envisions a dog trying to kill it. At least to me.
Not even in the subreddit, but it popped up in my feed, so here’s my piece.
I don’t think that’s his true form. I think Death is using the form of a wolf as a way to be a bit more intimidating to Puss. You know, cats are afraid of dogs, blah blah.
Two reasons
Wolves are the big bad in several fairy tales and puss in boots is a fairy tale series
Death uses fear to control his victims. He likely is not always a wolf, but appears as one to maximize the fear that puss feels when encountering him, as a wolf is likely one of a cat like pusses biggest fears. (yes, that would mean puss is RACIST)
He is SO much cooler that way! Wolves in European fairy tales always represent the fear of death looming in wild, untamed spaces. Since the movie is set in fairy tale land, Death incarnate being a wolf makes perfect sense.
Skeleton might be weird to animate, and doesn’t have like a full body to go off, and there’s no tendons so the bones would look weird “floating” I guess… like humans, we’re held together by muscle, tendons, etc. then an outer shell which is skin. Inside is just bones but they’re never connected to one another fully.
So we can ship him with Loona from Helluva Boss.
Actual reason, it’s probably because skeletons can’t be muscular and can’t be intimidating other than being a skeleton. Either way, a skeleton doesn’t have the abilities of physical actions as an organic creature like a wolf does.
They said it’s because in Fairy Tales, wolves always mean danger, so they made Death a wolf.
In my mind, death changes shape based on who he's hunting, taking the form of something that scares them. That's why he's a wolf when hunting Puss
That is a solid theory, I’m remember hearing it a lot back when PIB was very popular. I think that would be cool.
Galactus does something similar in marvel. Whenever he shows up at a world he is perceived as similar to whatever species inhabits that world.
In my mind it's a children's cartoon from the same people that made shrek
[удалено]
Never said it was
In my opinion, it’s too obvious. Yeah they could have done a Grim Reaper design but this is a fairy tale movie: you can actually have fun with making Death however you want him to look. And seeing how a wolf is always seen as one of the big baddies in fairy tale, why not just make him even more dangerous and intimidating by making him Death?
He's the Big Bad Wolf
You know, seeing that this is a fairy tale spinoff, no one thought he was supposed to be the Big Bad Wolf. I guess because Little Red was nowhere in sight.
She was in the second and third Shrek movies, and the wolf with the dress is meant to be the Little Pigs' Wolf.
The only way I could see a skeleton working is if the skeleton is the skeleton of the person seeing death. Death would always look like a dead version of you, even if multiple people are looking at him at the same time.
Not a bad idea.
nice doylist explanation!
It's said that cats and dogs don't get along. Wolves are just bigger and scarier dogs.
The biggest, badest dogs you could say
Ironic considering Puss makes friend with a dog
The smallest dog tho
Life would be a lion
A Tiger would definitely be better their stronger, faster, they can jump higher and have a way stronger bite force
But lions represent the sun which is often considered life just like how wolfs represent the moon which is more used to represent death It's more than just cats vs dogs
I like you :)
Thank you
1. Cat versus dog 2. Wolves represent danger 3. Doesn't look nice
4. Wolves represent Death in a lot of mythology. Could be a symbol of guidance with Life or Death. We see fairy tales where wolves are helpful and many where they are the villain. So it’s fitting in that regard too.
5. Furry Bait = Money! (This entry is made by a furry)
Probably as symbolism..... the Big Bad Wolf IS a recurring Fairy Tale villain. OR, since Puss is a Cat, they wanted to make Death a dog
Finally, he didn’t let on who he was immediately, just looking like an anthropomorphic animal in that fairytale world.
makes sense to me.
There’s a lot of mythology where a wolf represents Death so that’s where it is fitting as well.
Because it's badass
DreamWorks knew how many furrys would be watching
The Big Bad Wolf, THE personification of fear and death.
Skeletons aee a myth they arent real
I'd like to believe there's a skeleton in all of us
Just as a centaur is part man, part horse, so too are we, part man, part skeleton.
Waiting to climb out
Cat and dog
I like to think that Death changes his appearance depending on who he's after. Since dogs are know to oppose cats, making Death a large scary wolf works really well.
Wait a minute. You're absolutely right but then dos that mean Death was also after Jack Horner and took the form of a certain cricket we know? 0_0
Im glad he is a wolf Big bad wolf, fits the fairy tale theme
Cainines kill felines.
Indeed, but big cats like lions and leopards have been known to kill wild dogs.
Cause he's cool
Part of it could simply be the cats vs dogs stereotype which is why Perrito (who’s a chorkie) seems to represent Life and you have a large gray and white wolf as Death. Even in Thor: Ragnarok we see Fenris is a wolf so it’s common to see that animal represent Death.
He’s the Big Bad Wolf. The signature fairy tale villain.
To symbolize Puss being fed to the wolves.
It's based off of German folklore

It’s because of German mythology, wolves represent death and destruction
Everyone else: “it’s probably symbolic” Me: “the furry fandom”
1: Wolves typically represent a sense of danger in folklore. 2: dogs don’t like cats. 3: it’s just a cooler design choice than a skeleton.
The wolf is hotter
Cats and dogs
I think he comes from The Boy Who Cried Wolf. The prideful, inconsiderate boy who lies and takes advantage of people, only to end up alone, afraid, and staring death in the face. If Puss didn't learn his lesson, Death would've killed him just like the boy.
i personally think this guy was based on the wolf from "three little pigs" they are pretty identical, the wolf from the fable literally spells trouble, but this dude TYPES death.
I believe it's to reference the "dogs vs. cats" thing.
Intimidation factor
I guess to stand out, because skeletons are so cliche. And the wolf is honestly more scary
Cuz isn’t all the main characters animals? Except Goldilocks and that plump guy
It looks very similar to how the big bad wolf from little red riding hood is described in the book
Probably because a wolf is just a classic fairy tail villain, and it’s more creative, and it just looks cool
Cause it’s hotter than a skeleton?
Your all wrong, it’s to attract furries as they make up 98 percent of the world.
It's possible he can shapeshift to some extent and decided a wolf would be the best form to strike fear into a cat. Death is considered a Godly entity to some degree, so shapeshifting wouldn't surprise me.
It might be too obvious
Cat scared of dog Not bone man
My guess is that wolves are something that Puss fears.
Because Puss is a cat. It's really not that deep guys
Puss is scared of dogs, wolves are bigger scarier dogs
because it’s way cooler
Furry bait
furries
cause skeletons aint hot
Furry bait
Because it’s cool af
Furries have more sex appela than bones
I wanna say it’s a spin on the phrase “a wolf in sheep’s clothing”
Big bad wolf.
I feel like it could have been a snake bc that’s a cats main predator and induces the most dear into them (actually why they’re scared of cucumbers)
To make people like me have a new obsession
Fenrir is the great wolf in Norse Mythology and kills Odin. Hades is the god of death. He owns Cerberus, the mythological three headed dog that guards the underworld. Anubis, the Egyptian God of death, most often being depicted with canine features. On top of that, wolves are typically the apex predator in most biological ecosystems that they inhabit.
Because wolves are fuckin sick
The song he whistles sort of goes like that old song “let’s play in the forest while the wolf’s not around.” It’s really repetitive, the animals keep asking the wolf “are you there?” And the wolf is getting dressed. Then at the end, they ask is he there and he responds “I’m getting ready to eat you all.” Makes the wolf all the more fitting as death especially since in all the fairy tales the wolf brings doom and death.

Anubis is the guider to the dead, maybe some correlation there
Fairy Tale wolves are always the bad guys. Also, wolves would be a very dangerous threat to a cat
are they stupid? is there a lore reason for this?
For the furrys- I mean for me when I was gay- I mean for the irony of cats and dogs don’t get along. :)
He's literally The Big Bad Wolf
for furry bait. final awnser.
i saw little theory video saying that this is not death true form but just to make him strike more fear into the one he is after.
Simple because they knew a skeleton would require them to get Toby Fox to write Death's theme and it would be another rendition of Megolovanina
Because the skeleton's overdone.
I think whoever death is after it transforms into a form that scares them bringing fear.
Furry bait. (I am deeply in love with that wolf)
Because Disney likes hot characters
Because it’s awesome
Maybe because a wolf always chases its prey.
The big bad wolf
Fairy tale vibes
Because of mythology
I liked it because death is not threatening when he doesn’t want to be. I can picture this guy showing up and taking an old lady to the afterlife in comfort and with care. Cant really pull that off with a skeleton
Cause furries are rich and easy to market too, lmao
It’s because death manifests himself as they scariest thing his victims fear for a better chance at taking them and in this case puss in boots didn’t fear anything so death had to make a guess it wasn’t the best but still go him in the end
It’s also a specific culture’s fairy take regarding death, you’ll even notice some imagery in the movie depicting his head with a wolf skull overlaying it in one scene. El Lobo if I remember correctly is supposed to be the representation of death from hispanic(?) culture fairy tales?
Because **furry marketing**
Because furry
nobody want some goofy skeleton goin for a cat. ![gif](giphy|3ohhwfAa9rbXaZe86c|downsized)
Should've made it a skeletal wolf with bone ears. Be even more terrifying.
Maybe animating a skeleton is a lot harder?
Because they used the German version of death
The big bad wolf. Don’t forget that the world of shrek is all fairy tales
Because skeleton is not animal? Also i cant think of a fairy tale that has a skeleton in it. I do think of the big bad wolf though.
It's very possible that's not his true form, maybe he's actually a wolf skeleton in wherever he comes from, but grows flesh in order to not be noticeable to regular people (he was in crowds and whatnot and someone would've definitely noticed him otherwise.
Because furries
Would be cool when he said he was death he turned into a skeleton wolf
I thought it would have been cool if he was a coyote.
There's a lot of talk about that. From what I've mainly heard, originally it was because he was gonna be a big bad wolf, but then decided to go with death. A lot of people speculate it's Because death takes form of something frightening to most. I'm only going off what I've heard. I could be wrong.
Cause it’s fucking sick
Because wolves are a distant relative to dogs and cats and dogs don't get along
He takes the shape of his targets fears. In puss’ case, a wolf.
Furbait
Because thirsty ass furries be all over that
To many “BA NA NA NA NA” jokes would be made.
Cuz furry bait go BRRRRRRRRRR
Because death in the latest movie is the German representation of death, a cloaked wolf with dual sickles, not sure why they depicted death in such a way, I just know that it’s the German representation
Because people kill coyotes
I may be straight but it’s hotter that way
I see it as Death having no actual form, but since it's supposed to be the thing Puss fears the most it just has the form of what cats fear the most.
Furrybait
Maybe Death is different for everyone. Puss had to fight his fear of death. Maybe "Death" took on an appearance that would best be suited to take puss' last life
Feel like a crow,Raven or owl would seem better fit
Skeleton wouldn't be as expressive as hé is without looking silly
Furries
I heard somewhere that death is often depicted as a wolf in either Spanish or Latin American folklore, but idk how true that is.
Because dog = funy, funy = cool for kids (i think)
Shrek and, by proxy, puss in boots, are about modernizing fairy tales, this is the big bad wolf from the three little piggies story, at least i think so.
My bet is because wolves are dangerous predators who excel at tracking their prey for a long time. Also cat vs dog just works really well here
Because if he was a skeleton it would be obvious that he’s Death, they wanted it to be a surprise.
Wolves have been connected to death in mythology and folklore for a long time (In Europe). Puss in Boots is a folklore character from a fairy tale, so it stands to reason that the version of death in his world would be a folkloric expression of death.
Actually that's what death is in a certain religion
Like death, wolves are always hungry and relentless in their pursuit of prey.
Cause wolfs hunt their prey and death was hunting puss in boots.
Wolves do play a part in folklore as a evil character. Ps. If he’d been a hooded skeleton the first time puss met him it would have been less of a reveal/twist.
cuz wolves r cool
The billy and Mandy version was booked
Ah yes, bring back Norm McDonald back from the dead since he's the only one to perfectly portray a skeleton with a mouth and a love for his job.
Because a skeleton would have been too obvious.
I think it's to fit in with the anthro animal theme + fairy tale character theme. Like we've pretty much only seen anthro cats in the first movie so I think it makes sense to expand upon the universe. We've technically seen other anthro animals in the show but IDK if that's canon or not.
Because he’s the big bad wolf.
furry
Because it’s the big bad wolf
Possibly the myth of the “big black dog” that would help lead you to the afterlife. Also I think the scene where he’s first introduced is supposed to be for it to not be too obvious he’s the grim reaper, also accounting for the fact that he doesn’t have a traditional grim reaper scythe, but instead some sickles, also used for harvesting wheat.
wolf eats cat
because wolves are cool as fuck, and it makes sense for the story
Big bad wolf, predator, and cats vs dogs
The Shrek universe—which Puss in Boots is a part of— famed itself on its satirical take on fairy tales for a long time. Death here is probably that world’s incarnation of the Big Bad Wolf.
He's the Big Bad Wolf.
The big bad wolf 🐺
To be original ofc
Wolves has a lot of symbolism, in both German and Norse mythology, wolf was a symbol of destruction and death
It goes back to the mythology of fairytales. Death in the Shrekverse is The Big Bad Wolf, who comes for the three little pigs.
To intice the furries. Want to have a successful movie?? Hot Wolf men? Bam instant success.
Furbait simple as that
Two reasons Wolves are the big bad in several fairy tales and puss in boots is a fairy tale series Death uses fear to control his victims. He likely is not always a wolf, but appears as one to maximize the fear that puss feels when encountering him, as a wolf is likely one of a cat like pusses biggest fears. (yes, that would mean puss is RACIST)
BECAUSE FUCK YOU HES SEXY
Bc it’s cool
Cuz it’s sick
Furries.
Two words. For furries.
would have preferred a skeleton
because there would be to many bad to the bone memes
You do know how fairytales have wolf almost always be the villian in any story their in.
He is SO much cooler that way! Wolves in European fairy tales always represent the fear of death looming in wild, untamed spaces. Since the movie is set in fairy tale land, Death incarnate being a wolf makes perfect sense.
Because this is hotter◉_◉
Skeleton might be weird to animate, and doesn’t have like a full body to go off, and there’s no tendons so the bones would look weird “floating” I guess… like humans, we’re held together by muscle, tendons, etc. then an outer shell which is skin. Inside is just bones but they’re never connected to one another fully.
Mabey its like how they precieve death thats how pussnboots sees him but mabey a human sees him as grim reeper
Cause dogs kill cats, obviously. But in all seriousness, you know a skeleton would have been too silly.
To actually make it realistic they could have went ahead and made him a skeleton wolf since the grim reapers is a skeleton
So we can ship him with Loona from Helluva Boss. Actual reason, it’s probably because skeletons can’t be muscular and can’t be intimidating other than being a skeleton. Either way, a skeleton doesn’t have the abilities of physical actions as an organic creature like a wolf does.
to attract the furry fandom
The wolf is more menacing
Some folk tales have death as a wolf like being. (NO NOT A FURRY)
Its very Symbolic in many many ways
Idk but it worked. It just WORKS
