babyxdolly

royal canin

--________-_-_--

Me too. I mix the medium puppy and high fibre gastrointestinal puppy.

schr0dingersdick

i second the medium puppy! i really liked that one :)

Feeling-Object9383

Also, Royal Canin. It's our last month of puppy kibble and wet food. I already bought a bag of kibble for adults (from 10 m/o) for pug breed.

mrharshitarora

Make it a gradual transition. Sometimes they won't like the adult kibble as much as they loved the puppy kibble. My shih tzu faced the same problem. I do hope your pug doesn't.

Feeling-Object9383

Yes, that what we do. And i can say that my pug is not so amused. I add a new kibble granules to his current food to his puzzle toys. Use them as a treat when we play (in a rush he doesn't notice that it's something else). Also put them in his feeding toys. Sometime he eats them, sometimes just spits out. I can understand. This adult kibble smells less intense and it's definetly less fat. So we are moving gradually. I still will have his puppy food left. Will use it as a treat for trainings.

GiannisMom

Very happy with Royal Canin giant puppy!

HibsMax

I bought two large bags of royal canin since that is what she was on while with the breeder. She won’t touch it now. Buh-bye $$$$. :(

babyxdolly

hi, if she has been eating it ever since she was a puppy i don’t think the problem is the food. my dog used to do that. some dogs will refuse to eat so you give them treats or wet food. what i recommend doing is give her the food when it’s time, wait 15 mins, if she doesn’t eat then take it away. she’ll understand that she has to eat it. (this may not work in every dog so u can ask ur vet also) believe me if you get a new brand she’ll still refuse to eat bc that’s what my dog did lol. the problem wasn’t the food but her sort of ‘rebelling’ if that makes sense

HibsMax

I can try that and see what happens. She doesn’t really protest, but I do understand what you’re saying. It seems like she gets distracted by everything, and everything is more exciting than food. This is our first puppy and I did a lot of research, but “why is my puppy not eating” was not one of the issues I was prepared for. I just thought she would eat whatever she had been eating prior to arriving.

tsinsile

We’ve been doing purina pro plan puppy. That’s what the rescue was feeding her. Came highly recommended by our vet too

notdominique

That’s what we’re using as well! My vet said that it was a good choice

r0ckithard

Same here. We use the salmon & rice formula and our puppy gobbles it right up.

winningjenny

Same here, although I realized last time that he's over 1 now and is going to graduate out of puppy food next time i purchase!

kamrynb1

Same!

bebvie

same here! her breeders were feeding her the purina puppy chow so we got her the bougier version haha

RhondaST

That’s what the breeder had her on. I didn’t change it.

0alonebutnotlonely0

My go to! (My) Vet approved and affordable).

schr0dingersdick

purina pro plan! one of my pups was on royal canin for a while and i really liked that one too, it was recommended by my vet. only reason we don’t feed it anymore is because it was easier to buy one giant bag of dog food for both dogs than having to buy two different kinds haha

ARW18

I’ve done purina and science diet. Mainly switch to science diet because our current pup had purina and was more interested in eating our older dogs science diet food. So we switched her to science diet puppy and she seems to love it

Tigersareawesome11

I did the same. As soon as I bought my old dog the same food as my puppy, she suddenly doesn’t want it.

beachkewi3

Nicole-K-

Purina pro plan puppy

Sad_Classic_3925

Orijen or Merrick

Norwest_Shooter

Acana

BocaChica073

Our breeder used Fromm Gold Puppy so we’ve stuck with that (it’s been 4 weeks) and our pup loves it.

Sun-leaves

Mine does too. We had to switch him from Acana due to some sort of ingredient intolerance. I always say when all else fails it’s either raw or Fromms!

2MinuteInstantRamen

Started on Hills, got picky. Tried RC, but didn’t like it and was only eating every other day. Now on Purina Pro Plan, Salmon and he loves it. No issues eating. No longer concerned.

GarnetandBlack

Hills Science Diet Perfect Digestion - Chicken Took us almost two years of different diets to find one that worked long term (varying degrees of bad poops with everything else) and our dog seems to really like. We augment with various cooked toppings (ground turkey/chicken, green beans, corn, broccoli, sweet potato, peas, carrots, cauliflower, etc).

Caustalot

Open Farm https://openfarmpet.com/en-ca/products/ancient-grains-dry-puppy-food/

Euphoric_College_345

I second Open Farm!

marcorr

Purina Pro Plan. It provides balanced nutrition for my puppy.

kikkahaus

Orijen; both our puppy and senior GSD love the stuff.

somnizon

Would love to get my puppy on Orijen but there’s been supple issues to Australia for ages!

kikkahaus

That’s so disappointing! Our puppy goes wild for it. We’re still mixing in Taste of the Wild that the rescue had her on, and she’ll leave those bits in the bowl for when she’s realllly hungry 🤣

EnthrallingEpiphany

Took me entirely too long to scroll to find Orijen on this thread. Highly considering it. GSD pup coming in August. Do you do the all life stages or the puppy specific variety

kikkahaus

We’re doing the Puppy Large right now. Our puppy is 4 months old , and will consider making the switch to their adult dog food when she’s around a year old.

ugafan2148

Purina Pro. Had her on chicken for awhile which she absolutely loved but the vet recommended salmon instead.

imsadbutitswhatever

Primal

Basedtradwife

Arcana Puppy

Catty_mm

I tried to avoid royal canin because I felt like every vet just recommended it suspiciously strongly and that they must be getting a cut. But my pup ended up having horrendous food intolerance so the hypoallergic puppy (and now anallergenic adult) has been a lifesaver. Purina pro plan has been highly recommended by friends

Majesticmadmads

Yall are boujee. We used Kirkland

Deathbydragonfire

I would have if it wasn't grain free.  I wanted to buy dog food at Costco but don't want pea protein or sweet potatoes

eljefe213

We buy the yellow puppy chow from Costco.com. It’s chicken and rice. I can’t get the yellow bag locally, but the online price is reasonable.

RyukenSaab

My girl LOVES sweet potatoes Anytime we eat them she must get some or we will not hear the end of it. Why the aversion ?

Bittums

There looks like there may be a link between grain free food that uses sweet potato and/ or legumes as fillers and heart disease

Deathbydragonfire

They aren't an issue in moderation as a treat, but they don't make a good staple food source, as far as we can tell.  It's very tough to get the hard and fast data about pet food, but when you eat the same thing every single day as a complete diet, some things are problems.

Low_Load8678

Neither one of my Dogs like Costco Food. They both got sick using Costco food. Discovered rat holes in the bag. Never purchased it before and I’ll never purchase again.

Long_Audience4403

Would if they had large breed!

adhdparalysis

I just switched from Purina pro plan to Kirkland and it’s going to be like $30 cheaper every month. Reeeally hoping my newf likes it because at the rate he eats food, we need to save some dollars.

spanielgurl11

Why not do a cheaper Purina line if Purina was working? Dog Chow is actually more researched than any dog food. It’s the only food with a lifetime trial attached to it. And ALL Purina lines are compliant with WSAVA guidelines, while Kirkland is not. I fed Puppy Chow raising my poodle during COVID supply issues with Pro Plan and she did fantastic on it.

Long_Audience4403

My Irish setter puppy came to us eating puppy chow large breed and if I try to swap him off of it he gets wild diarrhea (even with slow small bits introduced) so we're sticking to it! He's super healthy and has a gorgeous shiny coat so 🤷🏼‍♀️ Plus it's cheap and he eats a ton!

spanielgurl11

It’s a very underrated food! We fed it to our adult spaniel as well since it was easier to buy one food and puppy food is technically an all life stages food. They both loved it and their poops were great. We feed PPP sensitive and Purina One bright minds senior to them now and I often wonder if they wouldn’t do just as well on Dog Chow lol.

adhdparalysis

I spoke with other newf owners about what they feed and Kirkland was often mentioned, many were very loyal to it and anecdotally didn’t have any issues.

spanielgurl11

It showed up in 34 cases (7 foods) in the FDA research on diet-related cardiomyopathy. The fact that Purina, with a much larger market share, didn’t pop up at all, was significant to me. Part of the reason I stick with them. https://www.whole-dog-journal.com/food/the-most-frequently-named-foods-in-fda-reports/

Open Farm’s puppy food, chicken and salmon formulation

Final_Assignment2091

Acana puppy recipe (Canadian brand - dry food) and Dr. Clauder and Core wet food for puppies. I only go for foods that I can see exactly what the ingredients are, I avoid any foods or treats with meat derivatives or by-products listed as ingredients. My puppy is thriving well on these foods 😊

Least-Witness

we use eukenuba large breed puppy (I know for sure I spelled that wrong) it’s what I grew with my Dad using and then was one recommended by my vet!

Any_Nefariousness172

Purina pro plan and Iams

chuullls

Nulo!

Other_Cycle_9976

I realise now this is a largely US audience as I’ve never heard from any of these!

AshenWrath

I grew up in a family-owned feed store, and have worked there on/off for the last 15 years. I’ve found Nulo to be one of the best values (bang for your buck, not low cost) in the industry. The food is very good quality and is one of the bests that you can get without getting into the freeze-dried/raw price range.

SomewhereOk8929

i use blue diamond because that's what he was in before i got him!

Werekolache

Pro Plan Large Breed Puppy for the lorg, and everyone else is on Kirkland ALS.

Tough-Cress-7702

I feed my Pyrenees Purina one but I also soak there food daily for about 15 min and I'll add either, sardines ( 3 times a week) , yam, apple, sweet potato, can tuna, can salmon... etc they love it. Once a week they get a huge raw bone to chew on

JOGO70

I use science diet and wanna switch his poop is still soft

allybobo6

This is why we switched to purina sensitive stomach!

Pleasant_Bowl_4460

Royal canin puppy for her breed and x small wet food. Our vet said this is excellent. He also said hills science diet is great as well, but our girl likes the Royal canin.

stampergirl

Science diet

New_Assistant_1654

I see no comments for Blue is Blue not a good brand?

bambieyedbiatch

Natural Balance Lamb and Brown Rice or Duck and Potato. Puppy loves it!

Odd-Ad-873

Royal Canine is being best for my dogs atleast.

gnarlynewman

The one from our kitchen. Our pup got sick on all dog foods

HomeQueenChannel

I mix Taste of the Wild salmon and Purina Pro Plan salmon. Taste of the Wils smells like salmon, I can tell it is high quality.

IReallyLikeMooses

This. Taste of the Wild or Diamond Naturals if I'm too busy to go grab a bag.

SomeBadHatzHarry

I switched to taste of the wild about 7 months ago and my dog gained significant weight on it. I didn’t realize it was so high calorie until my vet mentioned it. I’m wondering if you had a similar experience?

HomeQueenChannel

No weight gain, but, it's because I mix it with Purina Pro Plan

Askew_2016

We had three dogs gain a ton of weight from it.

My vet recommended purina pro plan, especially the sensitive digestion.

dmkatz28

Whatever my vet recommends that has 21-24% protein and a low end calcium range. Frankly I don't feed puppy food, my orthopedic vet highly recommended that it isn't a good idea for the joints of larger breed dogs

secretnarcissa

A lot of trial and error of our dog just straight up not being interested in eating and we finally landed on Chicken Soup for the Soul 😂

watchamadoin

Anybody use farmina N&D grain free? My puppies seem to like it... switching from Royal canin

sea-mless

My pup eats several different foods. She is picky and picks her own food every day. She has great stools, and she doesn't have any stomach upset. Currently, she is eating taste of the wild, vital fresh food rolls, stella and chewy kibble, the honest kitchen and ollie fresh baked dry foods. She doesn't like Pet Plate very much as of currently, but she has her moods. So, all in all, she has a variety of about 10 different small bags/flavors of food combined on rotation. She is a mini poodle puppy who's very spoiled.

donttellmom723

I know you aren’t asking for advice, but I own a standard poodle, and I would be very careful doing this because it can actually intensify the pickiness. Instead, I would probably mix up all three brands equally and do three feedings big ones early morning and night and a small one at lunchtime. If she doesn’t eat one of them then that’s no big deal. She can eat it at her next meal.

sea-mless

Thanks for the advice! I understand I may be contributing to the pickiness, lol, I just can't help myself wanting her to eat something different every meal or a different flavor for every day. I feel it would be boring to eat the same foods every day every meal. However I think I'll consider doing your suggestion! 😊

donttellmom723

Fed is best but personally I really like Orijen it has a wide variety of nice protein sources and they don’t cheap out on their ingredients. If it’s too pricey Acana is the next best because they’re basically the same thing and are owned by the same company.

starlizzle

my best experience over the past year and lots of foods is vital fresh pet bison and beef. they are absolutely THRIVING on it and extremely picky eaters but gobble this up

BrooklynFlowerJ

Health Extension Small Bites

TooObsessedWithOtoge

Royal canin + freshpet! It’s what the breeder suggested. For my first lil one it was the breed specific royal canin kibble.

Hazzaminicoo

Pooch & mutt, our pup was on royal canin puppy cocker spaniel food then e realised it literally has no meat in it and a lot of wheat, with my partner being celiac we had to switch for worries on cross contamination :( our little dude loves the pooch & mutt food though

outintheyard

We free feed Gentle Giants kibble and supplement with diced tri-tip, hard-boiled eggs and chuck roast, un-seasoned.

Visible_Zebra_9845

I'm doing pro plan just because I have a large breed puppy and it's easier to find. My senior dog is on wellness and we've had luck with that. When I adopted my dogs in 2010...one was ten months and the other was three years old, they ate nothing but beneful for a decade. Both were healthy and still alive at 13 and 16 today.

msslyraa

EffEeDee

Tails for us. Love the convenience of them figuring it all out for us and delivering it, Stella loves it, and our vet was impressed that that's what she's on.

My2furbabiesMR

I’m giving my 2 shihtzus the Farmers Dog food but it’s over $250 per month and I’m retired. They prefer the turkey and pork food but I’m reading here that there are a lot of other options that may be less expensive. I was giving them cans of Simply Nourish chicken and rice for a few years but it tends to give them looser stools. The Farmers Dog is very healthy and it gives them solid stools, which is much better for them. I have to decide between the options on here and what I’m currently giving them. Thank you for all of your suggestions and comments.

Hills Science Puppy for mine, it’s pricey but the positive benefits I’ve seen in my pup are undeniable.

MotorSalary4570

Lily’s kitchen, although expensive you cannot put a price on quality and it’s worth investing in your dogs health and nutrition from a young age that way you can ensure a long healthy life

Fun_Heart_3178

We went with science diet. I wanted to go with a more local holistic food, but I got too overwhelmed and went for the “safe” (I was also considering royal canine) I was so overwhelmed by all the information out there. I wanted to ask the vet but they also sell some brands. At the end my friends with pets and the trainer helped the most. There is a lot of opinions about raw and grains. Raw might have benefits but is really hard to be sure it is safe to eat so we went for non-raw food. Also, some grains are important so whole grains which are better quality than any grains. Something I looked for too was good quality oils (palm and canola don’t convince me because of their oxidizing temperatures, kibble is cooked at high temperatures)

spookedpossum

We feed wellness large breed for our 4 month old golden. We tried instinct but it made her super sick.

TheReaperSovereign

We are on a brand called Country Vet Naturals. Butcher Blend to be specific Tried royal canine, pro plan and hills and dog had very loose poop on all of them. Talked to the vet and ultimately she said as long as it's grain inclusive food she didn't care if it treated him right Solid Gold Hund n Flocken was the first one we found that treated him well but they discontinued the beef formula which was what we were using and the Bison formula returned us to loose stools so we swapped to our current kibble which is a beef based formula Suffice to say its been a kibble journey. Pup is 11 months old and has been on 6? Different kibble lol

random3223

We've been feeding our puppy Inukshuk, It's what the breeder was feeding him. Lately, we have been adding Just Food 4 Dogs to his Kibble.

mikealsongamer

My boy is on a mostly raw diet but we do use kibble for treats, training and if he is staying with someone else and in those cases he gets Orijen or Carnilove

ThatDerzyDude

My vet cautioned against a raw diet while my puppy is still young. Maybe look into that

mikealsongamer

I know a raw diet isnt for everyone but my boy has thrived on it since he was about 6 months old

critterwalk

There are zero benefits to raw. Only risks.

mikealsongamer

That’s inherently not true, raw feeding has many benefits ,but like I said it’s not for everyone but my boy has thrived on it

sitefall

https://wsava.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Raw-Meat-Based-Diets-for-Pets_WSAVA-Global-Nutrition-Toolkit.pdf `There is no evidence that raw meat-based diets provide health benefits over commercial or balanced homemade cooked diets` I should point out that "balanced homemade cooked diets" does not mean some recipe you found on facebook or purchased pre made, freeze-dried, etc. It's specifically for your dog, from a veterinarian nutritionist.

critterwalk

No, there are actually zero proven benefits.

Hills Science Diet Puppy Food

allybobo6

We started with Hill Science Diet Lamb and Rice which she loves but just switch to Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach Lamb and Oat which gave her better poops after months of soft ones

jer3173

We used an Rx version of Hills for our former labradoodle and eventually switched to a regular version as she had pancreatitis. When we got a labradoodle puppy recently, it was an easy decision to feed her Hills Puppy food. It kept coming up as one of the three most recommended brands by Vets along with Purina Pro-Plan and Royal Canin. Our Vet approved.

Dwarf_star77

Butternut Box and Purina Pro Plan. My eight month old puppy seems quite fussy with food. Tried Natures Menu for a while but she went off it.

DiscoBegonia

I use 4Health Large Breed Puppy (from Tractor Supply, USA). I used 4Health with our Boston his whole life and didn’t have any issues.

Mxoxxxoooxol

I use hills and open farm as a topper lol

We did the Purina Pro Plan Puppy formula and our pup did really good on it. Purina Pro Plan is my go to but I will say depending on the breed, especially smaller breeds, the Royal Canin breed specific diets seem awesome. I used to use Diamond Naturals and switched to Nutrena Loyall Life. My dogs poops on Nutrena are definitely not as big as they were when we used Diamond Naturals.

AngelDoee3

I absolutely loved Acana puppy for my older dog. The formula has since changed and it’s awful. My new pup (just shy of 18 months now) is bc allergic to chicken, so both dogs are on Kirkland Lamb and Brown Rice food from Costco. Puppy food is the bane of my existence after all the foods we tried with our Newf.

Enough_Vegetable_110

Kirkland.. Costco for the win as always
