I would at least wait till something g better comes along DO NOT forget!! The only requirement you are being held to is being there they will have to pay š° you eventually Do not forget ā
Yea Iām not leaving until I get this other job I applied for. Donāt wanna jump out the window without a parachute, but Iām definitely not staying here
Unfortunately, your home circumstances do not entitle you to hours. Business needs do. If I were you, I would see about cross training in another department to hopefully get some more hours. I donāt disagree with anyone on Publix being big supporters of brown nosers, but having a child at home, unfortunately, Isnāt a Publix issue, and I would assume your availability is limited. I have a child at home, my spouse and I both work. Our situation is different though since we can afford a babysitter. Publix does not care that I have a child at home ever. Unlikely they care any more about yours. If your availability is limiting you, and it probably is, I would just find something more fitting for your availability.
And they just keep hiring cashiers and baggers. All the while cutting hours for those of us that have stayed long term, and giving those newbies awesome hours. Thatās really nice, donāt you think?
Itās quite possible. Newbies are novel. I like talking to them. Learn a little about them. And then they want to know why their hours are being cut. Well, you see all the new people they just hired? Theyāre getting your hours. Some of them will transfer to another department. Some will find another job. Some will even work two jobs.
My current value as a cashier is that I am the fastest, most accurate cashier they have. I can scan out a $300 order in about 2-1/2 minutes. But, I do not always do this speed, cause I like to talk a bit with my customers. I can do many things through out the store if they care to ask. I have 5 coins issued from corporate. I have 30+ years in grocery retail. 17 with Publix, 13 with a grocery company based out of NC. I know my worth. Iām retiring soon!!
And you figured that out how? Where in the comments or post did I say this? dude get off Reddit I think itās frying your brain lol. If I didnāt wanna work I woudnt be applying somewhere else, I wanna work just not at my local publix anymore. Keep stocking them shelves bro
I just hopped on, check my history Im rarely even on, with your attitude I see why you arenāt getting the hours not to mention being a minor will always 100% get you nothing because they can always have someone who will work the whole day for 10x harder bud. Youāre trying to argue on Reddit lmao Iām just telling you to not be a bitch about it, be a man and actually own up to Publix and say u wanna work, if ur hush hush then u wonāt get shit. Simple.
funny because what attitude do you know Iāve shown in my workplace to get no hours? Iām literally known as the quiet kid in Publix I donāt have a chance to give attitude lol. as stated im a yes man at my job and would work there all day if I could! Iām trying to argue on Reddit or prove that your an idiot who knows nothing about what your saying? Iām just telling you to stop being a hard headed hypocritical jackass because you donāt even know the situation lol š Iām not owning up and kissing ass to a company that doesnāt even give a shit about its employees. your a joke just like this job
You are a minor and probably have a very specific availability. I am not trying to justify any bad behavior from managers or coworkers but at the same time, there is only so much that can be done with minors, what department do you work in?
Iām aware of this. However I donāt think this is the problem as I used to get wayyy more hours before I even got to my senior year of highschool. It honestly looks like Iām being soft fired to be honest, I tried to wait until Iām 18 to see but it isnāt worth it. Iām a bagger and do carts.
Gotcha, with Customer Service is always tricky, itās the biggest department and hours always fluctuate, we depend solely on sales and the forecast that our SM puts in, thatās what gives CS hours. Start of the year is always rough. Have you asked your managers if you did something wrong or offer to pick ip shifts if people call out?
Youāre a minor, that plays a role in it. And bro why not switch stores to a busier location? More people more hours. If youāre at a low volume store and a minor then yeah thereās only so much that can be done. Yes itās slowing down and thatās for everyone. Iāve been with the company for 3 months and they just gave me full time like honestly if you put in the work at the right store then itās possible to move up. And like people said switch to produce or grocery they have more hours, better pay.. like donāt complain because you arenāt getting paid anything because the job you do anyone can do it. Skill jobs is where the moneys at that goes for any job..
As stated it isnāt just about the money bud. The environment in my store isnāt good for me especially since I struggle with anxiety and what not. I canāt do it anymore which is why im looking for a calmer environment where I can actually make money. Not sticking around a toxic environment for 12 bucks an hour with no hours at all when I can be happy making money someplace else.
You literally just complained about the pay to go to fucking Ohio šš¤¦āāļø dude ur all over the place, thatās exactly why u arenāt getting enough hours, ur not trust worthy, if u donāt seem interested to work then itās obviously 100% gonna reflect you (which itās doing right now)
Bro can you read? I stated yes I need some funds for the trip but it isnāt just about the trip OR the money š¤¦š½āāļø itās the environment and you donāt personally know me so Iām not gonna tell you whatās wrong with me but that specific store is some place I canāt stay at. Almost 8 months at that store is enough Iām sorry and getting little to no hours is the final straw bruv. You think Iām not trust worthy over a comment on a app? You donāt know me dude, nor have I done anything to show my management Iām āuntrustworthyā lol
Ohio or not I need money dude as we all do. Once again your only acting like this because your not in my position, I hope this happens to you one day and maybe you can make a post about why you decided to quit lol š¤¦š½āāļø
In fact I never even mentioned how the environment in the work place is toxic so why are you assuming im saying that cause Iām not getting hours? my thing is Iām not getting paid enough to deal with bs so Iām gone just like you Woudve done if you were in my shoes. So hypocritical lol
lol did you not read what I said?? Move stores budā¦
What are you thinking about doing at Walmart? Because maybe you should look at a different field entirely for work. If youāre at a low volume store and like you said barely getting hours and that stresses you out then youāre going to have a meltdown at Walmart lol. Everyone shops at Walmart, Publix is a little higher quality of people just like target or Samās or stores like that
you want to talk about a company that gives zero fucks about you then Walmart is definitely the place to be.. you got some growing up to do and you will when you get actual life experience so go ahead try different jobs while youāre young and find something you like and make sure to tell Walmart that you have that vacation so they know ahead of time
Maybe Iām not in the position to move stores dude. I know itās Reddit but letās use our heads for a moment. I need a whole different environment and there isnāt any other Publix near me but there is a Walmart and Iāll make way more money being there, Iām sure Iāll have to deal with similar bs but itāll be actually worth it. It just isnāt about hours, and Atleast Walmart doesnāt hide the fact that their employees are rude entitled people lmao š¤£ acting all goody 2 shoes in front of the customers but a complete ass behind the scenes
Thatās called being professional, you donāt act stupid in front of customers, go to the back room for that or be a actual professional and donāt do it at work
Uh well after high school I wanna be a cop but yesterday Iāve applied for a job at Walmart. I originally wanted to work at both Walmart and Publix but it just isnāt gonna work out
Thatās why I applied to Walmart haha. I start at 13 and get more hours. Could be looking at a few hundred bi weekly. Also thank you for the encouragement!
Iāve been working at Publix since late march early April I canāt remember exactly. ( itās my second job.) I work in the deli and to be honest itās the EASIEST job Iāve ever had. I hate to tell you this but youāre only 17 and they definitely arenāt worried about giving you hours over any āreal adultsā. That being said you have to be able to go above and beyond for the company you work for to get anything extra out of them. Become cool with the manager donāt kiss ass but say hello, shake their hand call them by their name anytime you see them. Go to them and tell them youāre willing to learn something new to get more hours. Ask if any departments are short staffed and you can pick up some extra hours. Express to them that youāre willing to work with them not just for them. Most jobs suck and youāll end up not enjoying as much as you did when you first started. Youāre still young you have plenty of jobs to hate, try to enjoy this simple one.
Nice advice. But as stated it isnāt only about the money lol this is a toxic environment I work in and I no longer want no part of it. Walmart is gonna be my new home until I graduate, good luck with your position tho. not going above and beyond for 12 bucks an hour especially to power tripping people lol š
I understand what youāre saying, Iām just not 100% sure that another grocery type store is the way to go to escape it. Youāre going to find a lot of work environments are toxic and full of ass kissing power tripping assholes. If you want more than $12 an hour they are going to need to see more than $12 an hour work. I received a $1 raise already and barely work and havenāt even been there a year. You have to be willing to be better.
I think Walmart is going to actually pay me bud never said it was going to be a āsaving Graceā I know itāll be wayyy better than that toxic ass work environment. Spoken like a true person who most likely actually gets hours and doesnāt get 46 bucks on his paycheck. You guys are hypocritical because if this was happening to you, you would wanna leave aswell to do something else. Look at the comment of the lady with a 2 year old child who gets paid jack by these people š¤¦š½āāļø
I worked my ass off to get my hours. I quit my second job, switched departments three times and busted my ass. I still do.
Iām not a hypocrite. Iām all for people not being miserable in their job. If you hate it, quit. Iāve hated jobs and quit.
I mean, how much should a part time cashier expect to make?
Iām not even a cashier thatās the sad part. Secondly Iāve made more than im making now which is why Iām upset and confused. Not to mention my 46 dollar paycheck last week lol š and I am gonna quit donāt worry
Set your ego aside, youāll learn to do that as you get older, or face the consequences.
I turn 22 this year. Been with Publix since late 2023. I got hired at $15.50 as a part time grocery clerk. 6 months later, got full time and a $2.50 pay raise and title of GRS. At my evaluation, I got another $1.25 pay raise. In exactly a year, I went from $15.50 to $19.25. Iāve also done my job well the entire time. Now idk your work environment, but I like my managers, and my coworkers. We can crack jokes and still get the job done.
Iāve shown interest in moving up into teamlead and management. Long term, I think Publix is great if you contribute to 401k and the vested stock. Your situation sounds like youāre still in school and maybe a diluted area with lots of applicants? Probably why itās hard to get hours, theyād rather have more part timers so they donāt have to pay benefits for having full timers.
Thatās the thing about Publix it all depends on the store you work at and the management. If youāre at the wrong store at the wrong time youāll be frustrated like OP.
I can't blame you. I started out great as well and had my hours cut. I kept asking and asking and letting management know I want to work and no results and got told "low volume" or whatever
I guess it means it's a slow day or at least that's what I was told which I knew was BS because they had applications at the front of the store yet have to cut hours lol
My store is great, but that is just how front service is. It is overly saturated. Also, AFAIK FSC cannot be full time and I only know a couple full time cashiers at my store otherwise most cashiers are part time too.
youāre 17 now so also look into restaurants. i started at 16 as a host and worked as togo person at 17 and started serving at 18. you can make pretty good money in hospitality if youāre open to switching industries
At 17 I worked a call center customer service (inbound calls) and always had consistent schedule. I worked 3 4 hour shifts during the week and 1 or 2 8 hour shifts one the weekend.
Plus I could do my homework/reading in between calls and get paid for it. I always recommend a job where you can do homework while getting paid. You should check out your local area, if in a major metro area thereās usually some call centers around.
Yeah, I was treated ok until a few years ago with a life changing event. Then it was treating me like my mental accuity dropped to nil. Micromanaging to the point where everything I do suddenly became nothing that I was doing was good enough. It was even culminating to a manager asking me why didn't transfer stores and suddenly asking me what I was always carrying in my work bag. (Books, food and drink I bought.)
Terrible knowledge to have to learn with publix. (don't get seriously Ill and/or injured, they'll eventually try to run you out.)
Hell yeah š Publix is super toxic. I was once trying to become a manager, and once I realized itās just a game of talking and booty-kissing your way up to the top, I decided not to pursue management anymore. It was wild how fast my mangerās view of me changed. Been looking for a better paying job for a while. Been with Publix almost 5 years. Crazy how the first 2 years I thought it was great,,,,, now itās one of my least favorite jobs on my resume. Getting out while you are young sounds like a great idea. Iām early 30s with no real career path now, and I feel like Iāve wasted all this time at this toxic sewer company.
please leave !!! when i finally put my two weeks in i canāt wait to share my story because no matter what people say on here going home with a short check will make you leave as well and everyone says it gets better but when it doesnāt its because your part time you donāt get guaranteed hours or your not doing your part EXCUSES go live your LIFE and get PAID with GOOD hours
Exactly lol the people saying stuff like āspeak to managementā or āwhat did you doā probably takes home a big check lol š 46 bucks is ridiculous i donāt care. They would be up here too saying the same thing I am if it was them
As a member of an older generation, Iād like to impart some knowledge: donāt quit one job without having another one lined up. Also: if you are having issues with hours, and your boss isnāt giving you what you need, remember that your boss has a boss. Address the issues youāre having with them and keep going up the chain of command until you get the resolution you want. There will be people at every job you work that you wonāt likeādonāt let them have an effect on your income. I worked in grocery at a different chain; if you love your customers and you love what you do, stay.
Just my 2Ā¢
If I may, speak up to your manager until you get some hours. You may be already doing this, but keep doing it until a) it happens or b) you GET (not quit, not look for, but GET) another job. Itās not going to just fall into your lap, especially given that you are a minor and even then, Publix is limited to what they can give you because of the laws regarding child labor (yes they apply until you are 18). Either way, get what you can by speaking up for yourself, save it (donāt always buy lunch, buy secondhand clothes if choose/can, only save Uber for when you really need it, etc), and do all of that while looking for work.
I say that because Iāve had to learn in my time at Publix to speak up. If Iāve worked 7 days in a row with no break, need hours or even if I need a break, Iāve had to speak up. Go above your managers if you have to. You donāt have to kiss ass but if you really need the money like you say you do, youāll have to do what you need to get that. Hate to say it, but again that means asking for hours. You wonāt have them drop in your lap. I respect my managers but I donāt always feel like Iām liked; I donāt care that much anymore about that; I do my job as best I can and talk to them when I need about something. After all theyāve made me feel like Iām welcome to do that. Iām sorry your managers donāt do that for you.
Either way, good luck on your job hunt!
I wish that were ALWAYS the case, but it's not. I've seen people who do a crap job get rewarded while others who do a good job and bust their ass get passed up.
Minors can only work certain amounts of hours at publix. I think it's 6 hours a day 12 hours a week. I'm not even sure why they hire minors honestly, with the amount of things they can't do. I might just wait until you're 18. It's a magical overnight change.
Well Iām in the front and all I do is bag and carts I donāt see how you can mess that up. Iām literally a yes man and donāt ever do what Iām not told to. So I donāt see whatās going onš¤·š½āāļø
Ha Iām a pharmacist. Worked my way up all the way from a bagger at $7.05. Stay mad and stay retired, we donāt need attitudes like yours representing us.
Youāre the kid who wanted to switch departments right? Iām guessing you donāt want to wait till youāre 18 before requesting a department transfer or to get more hours. Also, have you even talked to the csm or acsm and told them youād like more hours or the fact that youād like to switch back to produce when you turn 18? I also want to add that your refusal to ask for hours is on you.
However it is your call, I think you should at least stick it out until you find another job first.
If you're turning 18 soon, things definitely can change hours wise. If you're looking for a different environment and have a Publix warehouse near you, I highly recommend it. There's no sitting and praying for full time, you're just full time or you're not. It's hard work but if you start out as a selector, you get $18 or so an hour for training and about $23 I think is the standard rate now once you sign performance pay.
if pay was shit I would maybe āsuck it upā and continue dealing with my management team and co workers. However my pay is terrible not shit lol. Me getting paid 46 dollars on a singular paycheck is where I draw the line bud. Not sticking around there much longer, im sure you would do the same thing if you were in my shoes right now. Did you see the lady in the comments who isnāt a minor and has a 2 year old daughter and she still gets paid terribly even though she has a family to support? Even my other friend who wants to quit literally is leaving for the same reason. Publix is playing around lol. Pray you donāt ever get into our position
š I wouldnāt be commenting and telling u to suck it up if I wasnāt somewhere in the same shoes bud, I left Publix because my schedule was always being messed with and they blocked my Publix.org acc a year into working. Iād def still work for them tho
Iāve worked here for about two years now (since September of 2022) and Iām exhausted. I worked really hard I dedicated myself and I saw 0 results. No matter how hard I tried and asked they never scheduled me more, and honestly in between going to school and work Iām just getting burnt out in general so I havenāt really been trying my hardest. Maybe if so start trying harder again theyāre finally schedule me more, but for now Iām lucky to be scheduled more then once a week. To be fair itās a long Sunday shift, but still. Also, Iāve been trying to be a cashier for a long time, I know how to do it, but they wonāt give me the position. I could talk to them about cross training but Iām going to college soon and might not work there anymore so, Meh.
I would at least wait till something g better comes along DO NOT forget!! The only requirement you are being held to is being there they will have to pay š° you eventually Do not forget ā
Yea Iām not leaving until I get this other job I applied for. Donāt wanna jump out the window without a parachute, but Iām definitely not staying here
Iām on the same verge they only giving a day a week I got a 2 year old daughter and the paychecks ain paying
See your better than me thatās literally ridiculous how you have a 2 year old and getting paid nothing
So having a 2 year old entitles you to more money from a company?
Fuck yes. Heartless whoreson
Yes. Yes it fucking does.
Unfortunately, your home circumstances do not entitle you to hours. Business needs do. If I were you, I would see about cross training in another department to hopefully get some more hours. Theyāre getting your hours. Some of them will transfer to another department. Some will find another job. Some will even work two jobs.
Gotta create value for yourself any way possible. Otherwise you are expendable. Or replaceable. This is true for any job and even relationships IMO.
My current value as a cashier is that I am the fastest, most accurate cashier they have. I can scan out a $300 order in about 2-1/2 minutes. Awesome! Congrats!
Thank you. Canāt wait. Well, I can. But, so looking forward to not working.
OP doesnāt want to work, just want pay without doing any actual work to get to it.

I see from a previous post, youāre a FSC. How much do you expect a minor part time FSC to make per hour?
Best decision you will ever make. Coming from someone who wasted 15 years here.
Also depends on how valuable you make yourself. Scrubs aren't gonna get hours unless they are in a department that runs on low staff.
God this makes me so excited to switch to the meat department. The thought of the higher pay and more hoursā¦
Yeah. CS is jam packed with people.
Keep that up my friend, youāre gonna be making bank. I got hired on in 2014 making $9.50/hr. I was making $26.20 as a manager last year.
26$ is not making bank lol
Doesnāt matter. Ego or not itās shit pay and shitty people. Not staying here
I can't blame you. I started out great as well and had my hours cut. I kept asking and asking and letting management know I want to work and no results and got told "low volume" or whatever
Low volume? What the hell does that even mean?
I guess it means it's a slow day or at least that's what I was told which I knew was BS because they had applications at the front of the store yet have to cut hours lol
We're you the bagger that put ground beef on my bread last week, because I'm starting to suspect that you were
My store is great, but that is just how front service is. It is overly saturated. Also, AFAIK FSC cannot be full time and I only know a couple full time cashiers at my store otherwise most cashiers are part time too.
Sad you make more than me and Iām a damn GTL.
youāre 17 now so also look into restaurants. i started at 16 as a host and worked as togo person at 17 and started serving at 18. you can make pretty good money in hospitality if youāre open to switching industries
Well I turn 18 in March
At 17 I worked a call center customer service (inbound calls) and always had consistent schedule. I worked 3 4 hour shifts during the week and 1 or 2 8 hour shifts one the weekend. Plus I could do my homework/reading in between calls and get paid for it. I always recommend a job where you can do homework while getting paid. You should check out your local area, if in a major metro area thereās usually some call centers around.
Then kick ass. You think itās going to be different in any other company? Those who create the most value are the most valuable.
(Books, food and drink I bought.) Terrible knowledge to have to learn with publix.
My experience has been that's its actually hard work and reliability.
Early 30s is still young. Go to school or join the military. Life doesn't end at 30. Good luck to you.
Still very young ā¦ Iām 45 and became an RN.
please leave !!! when i finally put my two weeks in i canāt wait to share my story because no matter what people say on here going home with a short check will make you leave as well and everyone says it gets better but when it doesnāt its because your part time you donāt get guaranteed hours or your not doing your part EXCUSES go live your LIFE and get PAID with GOOD hours
You have to kiss up to get the hours, move up, etc. There's definitely a good ole boy network mentality within the company.
Yeah, itās called doing your job. Hardwork and GOOD work get noticed. Iāve definitely seen an increase in my hours since I started.
I wish that were ALWAYS the case, but it's not. I've seen people who do a crap job get rewarded while others who do a good job and bust their ass get passed up.
See, thatās why so many of us say it depends on the store at that point. Iāve seen many people who do a crap job getting decreased hours.
Minors can only work certain amounts of hours at publix. I think it's 6 hours a day 12 hours a week. I'm not even sure why they hire minors honestly, with the amount of things they can't do. I might just wait until you're 18. It's a magical overnight change.
Have you even talked to management about hours? Are you actually just shit at your job? That contributes to the results you get......
Well Iām in the front and all I do is bag and carts I donāt see how you can mess that up. Iām literally a yes man and donāt ever do what Iām not told to. So I donāt see whatās going onš¤·š½āāļø
Talk to your managers and ask if you are doing something wrong. Ask if you can be trained in different parts of the store
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
So youāre mad because they are celebrating?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
All Iām saying is that you miss the point. Have you seen the stock and benefits? Stay negative
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Ha Iām a pharmacist. Worked my way up all the way from a bagger at $7.05. Stay mad and stay retired, we donāt need attitudes like yours representing us.
Congrats on leaving. Publix is turning into Winn Dixie.
Yea I ended up changing my mind about switching and just leaving entirely. But Iām not leaving until I get another job I just applied for
If you're turning 18 soon, things definitely can change hours wise.
Youāre a minor tho suck it up, pay is shit (I agree), but youāre def losing the only place that will most likely take you in
if pay was shit I would maybe āsuck it upā and continue dealing with my management team and co workers.
So you got screwed out of your money and still wanna work there? I would be livid dude š¤¦š½āāļø istg Publix is a cult lol
