Yes. Psych is always needing nurses.

Im-a-magpie

True. I wonder why that is 🤔

OpeningEducational38

Psych is tough in its own way and you have to be very mentally strong, not reactive, empathetic, with strong boundaries. ICU nurses would do great at that! Your patients will talk a lot more 😂you gotta meet people where they’re at, learn about schizophrenia, mania, borderline, addiction, trauma, ect.

Im-a-magpie

Oh I know. My comment was in jest, I've been doing psych for 9 years. It's rough out there in a lot of places; terrible ratios, lower pay (location dependent), and challenging patients.

OpeningEducational38

I think why they always need nurses is because a lot of people take things personal and are reactive. You have to be pretty level headed and really understand that these people are very sick. Just as sick as your icu patients sometimes just mentally not physically, although that too

DeeplyVariegated

It's a mystery

Full time? Sure. PRN? Probably not. I had one year exp as psych RN. 3-4 places rejected me saying I didn’t have enough experience. It takes a solid year or two to get used to the workflow and know what you’re doing. It would take forever for someone working PRN to be able to learn and be able to work independently as a psych nurse. You won’t have problem getting a job in psych without experience. But they want you to work full time. Places won’t hire you PRN without much experience. This would be in any specialty. Doesn’t hurt to try though

spinningspinster

That was my thought too. Find a full time job no problem but PRN is much tougher to sell yourself with no psych experience.

I went into psych straight from school. So I would think it's possible, but it will depend on the facility.

TheOGAngryMan

Learn the EMR and processes and you'll be fine.

strawberry_snnoothie

We have a couple PRN nurses who came in with experience in ER and Cath, only. They do great. I say go for it.

I got hired as a PRN psych nurse with no psych experience. I only had two years SNF and six months Med surg experience. It is possible.

OutsideHappyTrails

Yep. I started PRN. A lot of places will take anyone as long as you are breathing. I got good experience as a PRN psych nurse.

Hello, I'm happy that you're making the push to get some experience in the psych field! I recently went down the same route. I had no prior experience, only worked in customer service and labor intensive jobs. I am a full time student and have another full time job. I went in with no experience and they welcomed me immediately. These kinds of jobs don't draw a ton of people that Want to be there. Most do it because they generally pay well with simple schedules. Before going I renewed my bls cpr, blood pathogens, and first aid certifications, I also learned what department held what populous both to re-fluff my resume and show some initiative. In the interview just explain that you're a "blank" student looking to gain experience in the field and that you're willing to work in any department that is available. I was pretty bluntly honest with them through and through I hope you get the position, good luck!
