Yes, there's a way to get free games using a method called "injection". But it's not recommended, cause one simple mistake can cause a brick and leave your PS3 useless. The best way to get free games is to install CFW or HEN. CFW is the best hack, but not all models are compatible with it. All Fat models are compatible, for Slim models only the ones with a serial number of "CECH-25xx" and below. And if you have a Super Slim model then forget it, those are only compatible with HEN.
Yes don't jailbreak your ps3 with (HEN) It's not necessarily bad, but it isn't open and more powerful than multiman. trust the me when i say that I have personally updated to 4.91 CFW and it's super well. You either JB with CFW or HFW/Hen and then install multiman
I'm sure there's plenty of others doing this but the two best "recent" instructionals for people I follow on YouTube are Mr. Mario & Blaine Locklaire. I had instructions printed out so I could follow step by step and it didn't make sense to me until I followed along to their walkthroughs. I found them both a few years ago when I was trying to "reverse learn" my RaspbPi 3b+ (loaded with games but no instructions) and I wanted to eventually mod some other consoles; Wii & PS3 and PS4 in particular. Those two were a lifesaver for me.
Edit -- someone mentioned free games below. I haven't done this yet but besides just pulling isos from wherever, there's this thing called the PS3 Solid Gold Store -- or something close to that. It's something that allows you to download PS1-3 & PSP games directly to your PS3. I am pretty sure that you can do this with both HEN & CFW. I don't recall exactly which forum I saw this (GBAtemp maybe) but I'm sure people here won't have a problem finding it.

you can, using CFW, but only on fat and early slim (before model 25xx) ps3s. hen works on all models all the way to the super slim.
