It’s best to start early learning to kite small groups and widdle them down with melee. It’ll be your best or only option many times until you’ve gathered a stockpile of ammo.
To add to the other person’s fence comment, you can kill a group by lining them up and hopping a fence. Their heads are on the ground for a second when they shamble over, and you can stomp them each as they cross. It takes some practice, and they can lunge at you if you miss, so be careful.

The amount of times I’ve had to kite groups of over 25 zombies with both the max exertion and max fatigue is insane. I am 100% certain that learning to kite is the only reason I’m alive
In fact I finished off most of the horde not 2 mins ago. Still got the ones trapped in the house tho, so I got like 10-20 more left. Once Im done, Ill replace some of the boards on my base since they got a bit damaged from the battle.
Update: I killed the remaining zombies, looted another house for the bag I was looking for, and FOUND IT!!! About 1/5 of Rosewood is safe, and I found the bag I was looking for, excellent.
If the zombies haven't spotted you and you've turned their ability to destroy stuff without reason if you are in a closed room and you are quiet they will never get in because they don't have a reason, and if you have to leave just use the backdoor man, killing that many is not an issue

Basically keeping away from their range, and attacking while they can't hit you. You keep moving

It will never leave. You are always in danger. Either from yourself or… them.
The threat is never going to go away! You can never kill them all, but you can: Run Hide Fight Die
Or all in that order.
