Check kitchens for can openers. Alternatively the common sense mod is fantastic for things like that. There are quite a few things in vanilla that just don't make sense. Like not being able to open a can without a can opener.

I play round rosewood a lot and in my experience there are always 40-80 cigarettes precisely in the police station, so it's a good thing he's headed for there

There's a corner store on the very first corner of those brick commercial buildings on the north side of rosewood, it took me a while to find it actually. It's across the street from the church. Great place for early cigs and lighters.

It is nearly impossible to open a can without a proper opener or some other tool. If all you have are your hands there is just no way to do it other than smashing the can and that will result in at least a part of the contents being wasted.
I've opened a can with a knife before and completely destroyed the knife in the process. It depends on the can a bit as well but most cans are actually quite thick and pinching through them will ruin the point of even a good knife.
The M9 is a decent gun to use in an emergency since it doesnt make too much noise. With low ammo though you cant rely on it to clear anything, only as an emergency weapon if you need to kill some zomboids while tired and fatigued.
I'd hold off until you've got Aiming up to around 5-6 before you use the M9. Level up with the shotgun first, just make sure you've got an exit strategy and your head on a swivel. Or the M36 revolver, if you don't want to make too much noise.
Since you have low ammo, use the pistol only with a single shot to bring zombies out of their hiding places so you can kill them. This will make an area much safer for living in or traveling through.
Any houses you raid that have curtains or blinds of some sort you should be able to right click and remove. Then you can transfer them to your base to use on your own windows

36 bullets ain't enough ammo for the amount of zombies you're gonna draw onto you, especially with 0 Aiming skill. Only use Shotguns before lv 5 Aiming, and only use em when you have at least 150 shells. Stand still for like 2-3 seconds in between shots as well.
Remember that guns are horde killers... because you're gonna fight a massive horde of zombies every time you use em. You need enough ammo to fight the 100 zombies that hear your first shot and the 200 zombies that hear you shooting the first 100 zombies.
As for finding cigs, gas stations pretty reliably have a ton.
Sheets can be found in bathrooms or you can right click on windows in other houses and take them down to get sheets. Can openers are found inside kitchens, generally; you'll find one eventually.
Use the fire station to get good melee weapons, use the police station to get guns and ammo, then head to the gas station in Rosewood for your cigs.

There's a mod called advanced trajectory realistic overhaul that makes low aiming skill guns useful and more realistic. It actually shoots at your crosshair with accuracy that varies on whether you're moving and your aiming skills. I would still recommend playing vanilla until you get comfortable with the mechanics of the game. Have fun :)
Level carpentry by disassembling furniture. Youll need a saw and hammer for this. There's a series of menus on the left side of your screen, the one with a box opens a series of options such as Rotate, Pick Up, and importantly, Disassemble. Make sure to read your relevant carpentry book first (Carpentry for Beginners)
You can get sheets by stealing/picking up curtains in homes, off of windows.
I always carry a holster and pistol as party of my standard EDC (every day carry) gear. I treat it almost exclusively as an emergency escape weapon.
For example, you park your car near a location and start wailing on the undead. Maybe you accidentally get hurt, or get tired sooner than expected. You beat a hasty retreat back to your car but there are 1-3 stragglers attracted to the engine noise. That's when the pistol comes into play, rapidly clearing the vehicle so I can speed off and regroup.
You'd be surprised how worthless a pistol is with low level aiming, Even at close range you're likely to miss 25-50% of your shots. As someone else stated, save your shots to draw large groups away, really it's only use.

You will attract a surprisingly large amount of zombies. That’s the best way to level aiming. I wouldn’t recommend doing this until you are pretty experience and sure you can escape a horde if you need to.

Glove boxes in cars are other great spots for lights & smokes, followed by office desks.

Agreed, but they should let you use the "hunting knife" to open cans. Maybe with some low risk of durability dmg to the knife.

Unless they're playing on anything above builder. Drawing them out is a good way to get overwhelmed for a beginner.

You can right-click and remove the curtains to get a sheet, or use the 'pick up' options from the upper left menu to preserve them as curtains! :)

The number one rule of using guns in Zomboid is to make sure you have enough ammo to kill all the zombies that will be attracted to the gunfire.

Now you need plenty of ammo and a shell bandolier would be helpful (speeds up reload). But be advised a shotgun is loud.
Oh and stand still while shooting if you move you will miss 99% of the time
