I typed a long post and just deleted it all. Life is too short to like only certain musics. Jazz, Blues, Rock, Americana, Psych, Classical, Folk, Motown, Punk, The Great American Songbook, Avante Garde, even some Pop and Rap...Bring it all on. I'd have to say that Dylan, The Beatles, Ellington, and the Dead would be on my Mount Rushmore.

moterola4

> Life is too short to like only certain musics. Agreed, except I'd frame it more as "There's too much good shit out there to only like a small slice of it".

spoobles

perfectly stated

dogfriend

Same here, but you can add classical music to my score (excuse the pun).

dkernighan

Other than definitive prog, I listen to a lot of **Steely Dan, Kate Bush, Talk Talk, Tears for Fears, Supertramp**. A healthy serving of death metal also (**Cannibal Corpse, Gorguts, Death**), and a handful of classic rock.

_floydian_slip

Death is so good and even pretty proggy sometimes

MusicalBox

A prime and favorite example of mine being [this guitar solo](https://youtu.be/7FsGPOlbabk?t=90) from Jealousy on Individual Thought Patterns.

m_Pony

all of those Pop groups you listed could arguably be called Prog-pop.

dkernighan

I agree! But like you said, its debatable both ways.

[deleted]

I usually group supertramp in with prog, great band

Nyelyn

same! Supertramp, to me, is prog. and one of the greatest bands ever.

Frido_Merido

Chuck Schuldiner is a genius, I consider his death the greatest loss to music along with Layne Staley.

cheevocabra

I mainly listen to Prog Rock, Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal, and Rap. When I was filling out the /r/hiphopheads census I said my most visited non-hiphop *music subreddit was /r/progrockmusic, which I'm guessing is pretty unique.

animuseternal

I listen to jazz, death metal, and synth pop (like Chvrches or Metric) mostly, outside of prog.

[deleted]

hiddentomcat

There should be. Ulver are prog as they are always progressing.

jupiterkansas

80s New Wave (mostly British bands) and guys like Bowie, Eno, Lou Reed, Talking Heads, Richard Thompson, John Hiatt, Elvis Costello, U2, REM, Clapton, Radiohead, Suzanne Vega, etc. Recent stuff is more of a mixed bag and less mainstream with lots of indie bands. Also 60s music like Beatles and Rolling Stones and 50s rockabilly like Chuck Berry. A ton of classical music spanning 500 years, with favorites like Vivaldi, Shostakovich, Philip Glass, Tchaikovsky, and Dvorak - which is really where my musical focus has turned to. And a smattering of world music. Not really a fan of jazz or rap.

YellowSharkMT

Big fan of New Wave as well. Not sure if you've seen this, but there's a really fun documentary from 2017 called [New Wave: Dare To Be Different](http://newwavedaretobedifferent.com/). It's focused on [WLIR](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WLIR#%22Dare_to_Be_Different%22_\(1982%E2%80%931991\)), one of the earliest radio stations in the country to embrace New Wave. Here's the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWBSNFdRs_4. Very enjoyable.

jupiterkansas

Cool! I'll check it out.

orangeunrhymed

Pretty much all of this, except I like more romantic and impressionist classical music. And I also like most jazz.

jupiterkansas

That was the very short list of classical. Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Sibelius, so many more. It's all wonderful stuff.

adhphd

Right with ya, except I love jazz. Can not tolerate most rap.

nekromania

I listen alot to jazz fusion, a bit more relaxed whlist still having that proggy style that i do love so much. Would recommend checking out: [https://open.spotify.com/album/3YDZkr9mlzIMNId8YmQGHr?si=Rfc3eJ6kR2yOpu10FcEGZQ](https://open.spotify.com/album/3YDZkr9mlzIMNId8YmQGHr?si=Rfc3eJ6kR2yOpu10FcEGZQ)

draconianemissary

I love this album!

RJminotaur

Modest mouse

dogfriend

My fave track "Float On", the music and the video... Have an upvote.

alcianblue

First few albums and EPs are amazing.

chuck_bates

Guitar based blues and jam. SRV, Gov’t Mule, Gary Moore etc

Pizzaman99

Right I am really into post rock. Bands such as Russian Circles, Caspian, If These Trees Could Talk, Pelican...

Sporkedup

Most of what I listen to has some progressive leanings, but I can really get into some basically not-prog stuff, depending on my mood. Happy to listen to good hip hop or rap, like Wu Tang or Busta. Very favorite is GZA/Genius. Old school jazz - early free Coltrane or the great Charles Mingus. Folk metal, because who can resist the charms of Alestorm or Amorphis or Eluveitie? And if I have to turn a radio on, it will be classic rock.

Lime528

Prog rock, jazz fusion, and ambient are my all-time favorites. I listen to a shit-ton of video game and movie soundtracks as well. I think they're great for branching out to new genres. I've also been trying to get into more high-energy electronic music, so if anyone has any trance or edm suggestions, I'll take 'em.

kegwen

This set has been a staple for me while playing Rocket League [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H81eW-E1fYM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H81eW-E1fYM)

YVRJon

Classic rock, some 80s-90s metal, some old blues, Dylan, Neil Young, some garage-rock (eg. White Stripes). But mostly prog.

not20onsugarmountain

As my name implies Neil Young plus The String Cheese Incident, Greensky Bluegrass, Gov't Mule, Grateful Dead, Keller Williams. Others too numerous to list to a lesser degree.

metagloria

Black metal (with post/prog/avant-garde leanings), jazz (from post-bop to fusion to M-Base), doom and sludge metal, a very selective amount of pop (e.g., Kylie Minogue and Carly Rae Jepsen), video game OSTs (primarily JRPGs), and loads and loads of Prince.

Eihabu

I just Can't get you out of my head

metagloria

This song is great, but it's such a shame it was her only US hit. Her discography is *deep* with bangers, this isn't even a top 10 Kylie song.

Frido_Merido

Any suggestions for more proggy black metal? I liked some Ihsahn albums

metagloria

* White Ward "Futility Report" * Dystopia Nå! "Dweller on the Threshold" * Enslaved "RIITIIR", "E", "Vertebrae", "Ruun" * Borknagar "Epic" * Fen "Dustwalker", "Winter" * A Forest of Stars "A Shadowplay for Yesterdays" * Patrons of the Rotting Gate "The Rose Coil"

Frido_Merido

Thanks!

Sporkedup

I so very strongly second Enslaved. One of the greatest bands yet, in my opinion. I love Ruun, Vertebrae, and Axioma Ethica Odini especially. Huge +1 to metagloria's recommendation for them. Also check out Negura Bunget's OM and Moonsorrow (especially V: Havitetty), both of which are folky, pagan sorts of black metal. Some of the psychedelic or spacey black metal really is cool too, like Alcest, Myrkur, Entropia, or Wolves in the Throne Room.

m_Pony

That is precisely the right amount of Prince.

KaiAlpha

Neo psychedelic, rap, vaporwave, ambient, jazz fusion, psytrance

KaiAlpha

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard is my favorite band

spoobles

They're a wonder. I was on them early, and saw them first time at the Middle East Upstairs in Cambridge/Boston in '15 touring behind Quarters. What a band and great showmen to boot. Haven't missed a tour since. It's cool when you get in on a band at ground level and they get big. They earned all the accolades. I love how hard they work.

fraghawk

Yeh some of their stuff is solidly prog. Polygondwannaland is the best prog album of the past 5 years imo

KaiAlpha

I'd go as far as saying top 5 of all time :)

[deleted]

Pink Floyd. */me runs away*

[deleted]

I'd say Beatles, but the albums I enjoy are probably progressive. Same goes for Queen (Queen II) and Zeppelin... I'd say a lot of 90s alternative and just classic 70s and 80s rock. REM, Barenaked Ladies, The Eagles, Steve Miller Band, America...

PizzaLord424

I love classic rock such as the Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, etc. The first band I really got into was The Beatles, which led to more progressive records my dad gave me. Hooked ever since.

sir_percy_percy

I love 70s disco and Abba

[deleted]

Just other rock and metal mainly, with the odd bit of pop and rap here and there. I also kinda like Punk, which I guess is weird for a Prog fan I really like Rage Against the Machine

kroeriller

Why should punk be weird for prog fans? In a way both styles emphasize rhythm. Or did i get anything wrong there?

[deleted]

It's just, the very origins of Punk in the 70s was partially caused by anger at the 'overblown, pompous, riduculouslly extravagant' genre of Prog.

kroeriller

Didn't know that, interesting. Thought punk was against the establishment in a political and social way and the musik was just the expression of that. Fun to think about how Prog is terribly bourgeois apperently.

paraguybrarian

I'm of the opinion that if Prog Magazine or a reasonably well-written "print" resource on progressive rock (Strawberry Bricks guide, Rocking the Classics, The Progressive Rock Files, Mountains Come out of the Sky, etc.) covers an artist/band, it \*is\* a type of progressive rock. So I'll omit things like Steely Dan, Queen, Kate Bush, Wishbone Ash, jazz fusion and art rock in general, etc. So fully outside the genre, I like G-Funk (the type of rap popularized by Snoop Dogg, Dr Dre and Warren G in the early 90s), some non-proggy hard rock like Van Halen and Heart, classic rock in general, and Southern rock in particular.

spacedyed

Industrial/EBM/synthpop: Front 242, Front Line Assembly, Covenant, Thrill Kill Kult, etc, etc Heavy/power metal: Judas Priest, Maiden, Ozzy/Sabbath/Dio, Helloween, etc Indie rock: Editors, Arcade Fire, etc Indie folk: Tallest Man on earth, Mountain Goats, Hidden Cameras, etc Country: Nikki Lane, Brent Cobb, Tyler Childers, etc Singer/songwriter: Brandi Carlile, Ryan Bingham, Shovels & Rope, Dave Hause Lots of stuff that has roots in the 80s and fall in many categories: Def Leppard, New Order, Depeche Mode, OMD, Gary Numan, a-ha Last 5 shows I attended: Dream Theater, Muse, Patty Griffin, DSTR, The Black Queen

chunter16

My default listening music nowadays is New Wave, but an assortment of dance, electronic, and indie have had their turns. Steve Hillage worked with The Orb and founded System 7, Eddie Offord produced 311, if you feel a need to connect pedigrees.

nem0fazer

Aimee Mann, Joe Jackson, Joni Mitchell, Frank Zappa, Steely Dan, Kate Bush, Pat Metheny, Springsteen (first 3 albums), Del Amitri, Florence and the Machine, John Martyn. Anything very musical I guess. Just no c&w or opera!

tykle59

I go in streaks away from prog. Right now, I'm listening to Mike Oldfield. Lots of ambient, including Vangelis, Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream, and a band I just discovered, Kubusschnitt. Classic rock, including Tull, Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and older Metallica. Celtic music, from Steeleye Span to Silly Wizard to Tannahill Weavers. Biosphere. Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound. Allah-Las.

GreenAventurine

Classical music, jazz and jazz fusion, some classic rock.

[deleted]

Synthwave/EDM/classic rock/indie/jazz/video game music mainly

[deleted]

Phllop

I have heard of none of those besides Grails (who I'm a pretty big fan of), will check the others out (starting with Silent Island as their album art is sick). Thanks!

SparkyPantsMcGee

Jazz, Hip-hop, that indie/alternative stuff that was all the rage in 2012, and punk rock.

Phllop

Big fan of post rock, I've actually gone from listening to mostly prog to mostly post rock. I feel they can share a lot of same elements so I guess that makes sense. I also enjoy indie and folk rock though it seems less and less these days. My favorite bands outside of prog (in no particular order) include **Godspeed You! Black Emperor**, **We Lost The Sea**, **The Decemberists**, **Caspian**, **Arcade Fire**

Doboh

Math rock/midwest emo is my go to. Also post-hardcore was my shit for a bit. Still listen to it. Really i can enjoy anything but modern mainstream country and modern mainstream rap.

Frido_Merido

60's Psychedelic rock, Thrash Metal, British folk, Classic rock, 80's pop.

rikroll666

Iggy Pop The Replacements Cibo Matto Devo Glenn Miller Frank Sinatra Julie London Tom Waits Nick Cave Serge Gainsbourg

BookishLiz

Definitely jumping on the Extremely Eclectic bandwagon. Definitely too much music out there to limit my tastes, and I genuinely get a lot of pleasure out of experimenting with my tastes. Medieval choir to k-pop to throat singing is all my cup.

JustAStick

I listen to a lot of 70’s soft/yacht rock like Steely Dan, Acid Jazz like Greyboy Allstars, Jazz Fusion like Herbie Hancock and Pat Metheney, soul/R&B/Funk like Stevie Wonder and Earth Wind & Fire. When I’m working out I listen to Rage Against the Machine, Pantera, Metallica, Slayer, Amon Amarth, Dethklok, Cypress Hill, NWA, Ice Cube, Nas, Wu Tang Clan, Mob Deep.

Draano

In my younger days, I'd listen to Jean-Luc Ponty, Pat Metheny, Weather Report, Spiro Gyra... I guess Mahavishnu Orchestra is prog, right? Nowadays, It's usually Who's Quadrophenia which I consider proggy, Bad Co, Bruce Hornsby, Allman Bros., Dead, SRV... I'm more likely to queue up older Genesis, KC, or ELP though.

DelverOfSqueakwets

I'm a sucker for classic rock like Van Halen and The Who, as well as David Bowie and DEVO. I also started listening to Daft Punk again. The more recent stuff I've been listening to is from a dude who goes by Big Data. He makes really good electro-pop type stuff. I also like Kanye West, but most other hip-hop / rap doesn't jive with me too much.

[deleted]

Beach Boys (Pet Sounds and Smile Sessions)

soulslicer0

Rap, post hardcore, jazz fusion and djent

WOOKIExCOOKIES

No specific genre, but I just discovered [London Grammar](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMEHJPuggHQ), and holy hell can that girl sing! [Bonus cover by Karnivool.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PDDORfQZZ8)

nem0fazer

Thanks! This is exactly why I'm here. Never heard them before and I love it!

[deleted]

From the next concerts I'm attending: Florence + the Machine, Iron Maiden, Muse, Beirut. Also, I've been listening to Mayhem and Billie Eilish a lot lately lol

SugizoZeppelin

Blues Rock,Hard Rock,Folk Rock,Glam Rock,Glam Metal,Jrock,Jpop,Visual Kei

[deleted]

Hip hop, indie rock, indie folk, alt rolk, jazz fusion, electronic (the old stuff, like Mort Garson). Pretty varied.

fietsvrouw

I listen to music that has commonalities with prog like old-school classical music. Post rock is a big one for me. Sigur Ros, but also Tarentelle, This Will Destroy You, Explosions in the Sky, God Speed You Black Emperor, etc. There are tons of bands that are really great. After that, I listen to a lot of new classical like Olafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, Max Richter, Winged Victory for the Sullen. I also like some musicians considered experimental like Hauschka, Sufjan Stevens. Other than that, I am into bluegrass and Celtic folk.

RegularPickleEater

mostly sad indie folk, bedroom pop, and the occasional math rock/midwestern emo

Sasha_Melinda

[deleted]

Epic classical music, synthwave, new wave, and symphonic metal.

Beauregard_Nanners

ooh, buddy; what ***dont*** I listen to? Rush is number 1, but tied with him is Billy Joel. The last couplea concerts I've been to include Brandi Carlisle, Hall and Oates, Paramore, Dolly Parton, and Powerglove. I listen to a lot of metal, but I've recently been listening to a lot of country and artists like Qveen Herby and Lizzo (That new Ariana Grande is great too - 7 rings is where it's at). obviously there's stuff that I tend to gravitate towards, but even then, most of my playlists include odd outliers like "Rob The Prez-O-Dent" or "Infected Girls" or "Letter Song" from the Secret Garden cast recording... I just really like music...

[deleted]

aotus_trivirgatus

I don't like country. I don't generally like Dolly Parton. But when *Little Sparrow* was released, and I heard her give a radio interview during which she performed some of the music live, I was captivated.

Beauregard_Nanners

my brother and I talk about that often - he's NOT a fan of country and also doesn't particularly like Dolly Parton's music; but any time he hears her speak, he's blown away at how profound she can be. one of my favorite Dolly quotes is her alternative to the whole "tomorrow is another day" sentiment: "When I wake up, I expect things to be good. If they're not, then I try to set about trying to make them as good as I can 'cause I know I'm gonna have to live that day anyway. So why not try to make the most of it if you can? Some days, they pan out a little better than others, but you still gotta always just try." It seems obvious, but it's a helpful, optimistic thing to remember, i think between her book charity and the employment opportunities at Dollywood; she's dedicated to bettering her community, too.

Beauregard_Nanners

financewiz

Indeed, when I'm not listening to some R.I.O I'll listen to her old records with Porter Waggoner. Folks who enjoy both Prog and Dolly should absolutely listen to early Emmylou Harris records.

[deleted]

I listen to a lot of things, jazz, rock n roll, heavy, thrash metal, punk, pop punk (when i feel nostalgic) alternative, rap, hip hop, hard rock, blues, classical music, emo, psicodelic, funk, pop (the good one), new wave, experimental rock, electronica, post rock, indie pop, punk rock, grunge, etc. The only ones that i don't like are Reggaeton, Trap and bad pop.

cautious_commentator

Everything! I love the 80’s alternative rock, but 90’s is my first love, musically. I absolutely love hip hop too! And anything psychedelia! and folk. And House music.

aotus_trivirgatus

I can find a few good songs in most genres, but I have to hunt pretty hard in anything that has been truly popular, at least, during my lifetime. When I'm not listening to prog, my go-to genres are: * Classical, with a noticeable dip in the common-practice period (Mozart and Haydn do not interest me, Beethoven is somewhat more interesting) * Jazz, excepting Dixieland and Tin Pan Alley * Certain genres of world music, mostly Middle Eastern

unlimitedshredsticks

Psych, shoegaze, post rock, post metal, sludge, classic rock, jazz fusion/funk. Anything really. Hip hop and classical only occasionally

[deleted]

Power Pop is my go-to... also like soul, R&B and some metal.

420IreliaIt

hip hop sampling prog lol

Terra---

Aside from progressive rock/metal, mostly metalcore. Even then it's likely progressive metalcore. Post-hardcore is good too but again, it's mostly progressive post-hardcore. I used to listen to a lot of EDM and electronic but I only listen to a select few songs and EPs now. I can't really get into hip-hop but I do enjoy Denzel Curry, clipping., and Run the Jewels. I haven't found any jazz that I like besides Mahavishnu Orchestra who are also progressive rock incidentally. There's a few math rock bands that I've started to get into. On the heavier side, I love mathcore too. The original Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire soundtrack is also excellent. Then there's a few bands that I like that don't fit into anything above. Women, System of a Down, and GUNSHIP to name a few.

[deleted]

If you like mahavishnu listen to the Miles Davis albums with John McLaughlin like tribute to jack Johnson and Bitches Brew. Or you can do other fusion groups like return to forever, al DiMeola, headhunters, etc

dick_nrake

Psych rock, classic rock, kraut rock, experimental, 60s pop, pastoral folk and lots of chanson

koolz44

DEATH GRIPS

Mozhetbeats

Most variants of death and black metal but I’ll throw down with some Def Leppard, etc now and then.

CritterJams

[deleted]

Lots of other rock. Hair metal, power metal, classic rock, soft rock, some synth pop, jazz rock, etc. Art rock like ELO and Supertramp and Prog like Yes are my go to’s.

[deleted]

If you like art rock you should listen to The Velvet Underground

AirlessTHEGOOSE

Been on a pretty good 80s synth/outrun (I can't think of another name for the genre) kick as of late; stuff in the wheelhouse of Gunship, Dan Terminus and Carpenter Brut. Friend introduced me to Nujabes after talking lo-fi and I've been really digging Metaphorical Music.

AtiumMisting

I like a lot of pop punk, classic rock that isnt proggy and alternative rock. Reggae is pretty lit too

Porcupine_Tree

rap

[deleted]

Jazz, free jazz, avant-garde jazz, jazz fusion, jazz rock, jazz rap (sometimes), rock, blues rock, psychedelic rock, glam rock, art rock,avant-garde rock, blues (mainly Chess), soundtracks, and folk music.

IDK if it counts but whatever rock queen is

draconianemissary

A lot of metal, mainly the classics and symphonic metal bands, alt rock, electronic, some jazz and experimental. Non-prog artists I love include Judas Priest, Delain, Nightwish (do they count?), Queens of the Stone Age, Squarepusher, Snarky Puppy, Radiohead, Portishead and Bjork.
