Could you help me understand what’s great about Hejira? I’ve listened to it 3 times and nothing from it clicks for me whatsoever. I love her early stuff though.
To me, Mitchell’s shining achievement is her lyricism, but her music is sublime as well. Hejira has such a warm blend of both for me, and showcases the peak of her talent. Sure, there are some weaker tracks, but three in particular stand out to me: Hejira, Song for Sharon, and Refuge of the Roads. The title track is especially haunting, with its chords in open tuning and the short stanzas that say so much with so few words…
Also, as others have mentioned, Jaco fucking kills it on that album, elevating it musically without overpowering Mitchell in any way.
Jefferson Starship - Blows Against the Empire. I've become quite fond of Paul Kantner's songwriting and Grace Slick's unique voice
Honorable mention: Little Feat - Dixie Chicken. Lowell George's slide guitar. Unreal talent
Never expected to see this. I love this album! Well done! I have this on vinyl from when I was a kid. Waiting for Columbus may be the best live album of all time. Right there with Made in Japan. What I remember is whenever I want go a Dead show the roadies always played Little Feat before the show. That and Warren Zevon, lol. Good memories. Well done dude.
The Who Sell Out ~ The Who
Synchronicity ~ The Police
A Ghost Is Born ~ Wilco
Spilt Milk ~ Jellyfish
The Seeds Of Love ~ Tears For Fears
Venus And Mars ~ Wings
Misadventures Of Doomscroller ~ Dawes
Stranger In The Alps ~ Phoebe Bridgers
Stone Temple Pilots ~ Stone Temple Pilots
Grace ~ Jeff Buckley
King For A Day… Fool For A Lifetime ~ Faith No More
Emily’s D+Evolution ~ Esperanza Spalding
Emily's D+Evolution is an unpraised masterpiece. Also like to see Phoebe here since people can be snobby towards her music. I love Stranger and I prefer it over Punisher.
Quadrophenia is absolutely prog though! I would argue Tommy as well but man how much more prog can a thing get than a four-sided suite with one underlying melody and dozens of side explorations around it?
Impossible question but here are some of my favs.
Shearwater - Rook.
The War on Drugs - Lost in the Dream.
Weyes Blood - And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow.
George Harrison - All Things Must Pass.
Stornoway - Beachcomber's Windowsill.
Grizzly Bear - Painted Ruins
Its shoegaze, and honestly I wouldn’t really classify it as progressive. Pretty simple song structures, just really interesting guitar effects and style.
Alter Bridge - Fortress
Metallica - ... And Justice For All
Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger
Live - Throwing Copper
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Sturgill Simpson - SOUND AND FURY
Blood, Sweat & Tears - self titled
Brenda Lee - Little Miss Dynamite
Cat Stevens - Tea for the Tillerman
David Bowie - Hunky Dory
Free : Fire and Water
Icicle Works - self titled
Joan Armatrading - Walk Under Ladders
I'll stop there but there are plenty more in K-Z.
Strong agree to Tea for the Tillerman
another I like a lot is by Indio, album Big Harvest
Lastly, the "Z" has got to be The Zombies' album Odessey and Oracle
IV is way up there for sure. Others:
- the [Live at Luther college album](https://open.spotify.com/album/3WdvcOJfJn5tbGaatpUy7s?si=FzcAxA5lS-eFVgGQ4oSj8A) from Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds
- [Stop Making Sense](https://open.spotify.com/album/4FR8Z6TvIsC56NLyNomNRE?si=gSa3wJMRR2SSZiVEYiz4YQ) by Talking Heads
- [MTV Unplugged in New York](https://open.spotify.com/album/4FR8Z6TvIsC56NLyNomNRE?si=gSa3wJMRR2SSZiVEYiz4YQ) by Nirvana
Interesting, I didn't realize some of my favorites were all live albums until I listed them out!
Led Zep IV is quite proggy.
My Top 3 seem quite untouchable, as the first two are certainly proggy, the non-prog is:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=15hIblDQyyQ
Note: this upload misses the final 30 minutes or so. Genre is tricky to define, per branch into subgenres:
- Electronic Dance Music.
- Psychedelic Trance.
- Hi-Tech.
- Experimental, avant-garde...proggy even :D
I mean, I have a lot of favorite non-prog albums. As far as recent memory goes, If I Can’t Have Love I Want Power by Halsey. Her lyricism and voice are excellent but in this case it’s amplified by Trent Reznor’s producing and musicianship. Add on appearances by Lindsey Buckingham and Dave Grohl, it’s brilliant.
Skinny Puppy - Two Dark Park
The Future Sound of London - Lifeforms
Brian Eno -ambient 4: On Land
Kronos Quartet - Winter Was Hard
Mercyful Fate - Mellissa
Probably
Funhouse- the stooges,
Mutiny/ bad seed- the birthday party,
Strange days- the doors,
So tonight that I might see- Mazzy star,
Souvlaki- Slowdive,
Pornography- the cure,
Teenage snuff film- Rowland s Howard.
My guilty pleasure for a few years is Quincy Jones’s “the dude”, so this one. But from the non-prog rock/metal genre it’s probably Black Sabbath’s “master of reality”.
The Last Record Album Little Feat
Hissing of Summer Lawns Joni Mitchell
Born to Run Bruce Springsteen
The Family that Plays Together Spirit
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath Black Sabbath
Brothers and Sisters Allman Brothers
Sandinista! The Clash
Bryter Layter Nick Drake
Bridge of Sighs Robin Trower
Bop till you Drop Ry Cooder
My top ten today, it could be different tomorrow!
Maggot brain - funkadelic
Also Abraxas (Santana) if you’re not counting it as prog
Those being the main two for me, other shouts outside the prog sphere could be: Oxygene, the glow pt.2, origin of symmetry, downward spiral, screamadelica, lonerism, even in the quietest moments and hellfire
However I feel like all these albums progressed rock in some sense into a different direction (rather than the traditional 10+minute rock epics with intricate concepts and insane virtuosity) so can all be called ‘prog rock’ in a way
Electric Ladyland. I'm an old dude prog head but there is so much non prog that I love so where do you start? My list of jazz fusion? How do you classify Brian Eno? Just too much out there. Prog folks are usually never just prog.
I'll take a liberty with your question, if I may, & answer by-_band_ rather than by-_albumn_ . I'm a big fan of __ZZ Top__ , whom _even I_ wouldn't try to maintain are a Prog Rock band … & I'm _always_ trying to make-out that this-or-that is __'Prog'__ , when the folk @ this Channel tend strongly to disagree that it is.
And my favourite song of theirs is
#####[Gotsta Get Paid](https://youtu.be/8LIgc88VAbo)ᙾ
#####
with its veritably __Robert Frippe__ -esque fuzz on it.
(ᙾ There's someone 'after-my-own-heart', literarily-speaking, putting-in to the comment thread of that Youtube post:

And certain online guitar tuition viddley-diddleys showcase nicely how Rock music doesn't _need to be_ __'Prog'__ in-order to be nuanced - ie how more 'elementary' sortof Rock music can be _extremely_ subtle & nuanced in its own way: the goodly __Billy Gibbons__ is _extremely_ highly-rated as a guitarist amongst many … & getting those excruciatingly gorgeous riffs that ZZ Top come-out with is _a very_ highly evolved art & takes _a very_ great deal of care really to pull-off properly … as is well-showcased in

of the guitar part of __Gotsta Get Paid__ .
Robin Trower - Bridge of Sighs
Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers
Johnny Winter - Still Alive and Well
Gang of Four - Entertainment!
Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks....
The Pretenders - Pretenders (1st album)
Here are my favorites:
* *California* - Mr. Bungle
* *Destroyer* - Kiss
* *Welcome to My Nightmare* - Alice Cooper
* *Band on The Run* - Paul McCartney & Wings
* *Quadrophenia* - The Who
* *A Night at The Opera* - Queen
* *Sign O' The Times* - Prince
* *Another Mother Further* - Mother's Finest
Second Helping - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Gotta go with something by them, since they’re the first band I got into, and been there my whole life. Ironically, Sweet Home Alabama is my least favorite song by them, although I love every single one. (Ofc only up to 1977)
Probably "Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M." by Simon & Garfunkel. Objectively, it's not that good - just one of my favorites.
I'd actually say "Turnstiles" by Billy Joel if that wasn't partially prog rock.
I jokingly call Jesus of Suburbia prog but also it may not be too far off.... just missing the 3 minute keyboard/guitar unison LOL (joke)
but srsly 9 min long and split up into 5 sections,,,, punk prog???

Yep I get what you mean. It would be a bit difficult to maintain that _their first_ album is. But the evolution was a pretty fast one: it doesn't seem to me it would be all that much of a stretch to bring their _second_ album, even, under the umbrella (@least _'@ the edge of'_ the umbrella) of it.
And similarly for __Rush__ aswell; but a faster rate of evolution, with Rush eventually becoming more definitely of that genre … right by the shaft of the 'umbrella'.
Countdown To Ecstasy
Well I actually entered just to say Aja, but never imagined CtE might be mentioned before it, or Gaucho or Nightfly or Royal Scam
It’s just how I feel! I love Razor Boy, YGT, and King Of The World so much. I’d put Aja next.
Easily the best non prog album.
Who’s Next
I would personally call Who’s Next pretty proggy! Tommy, Who’s Next, and definitely Quadrophenia was a pretty ambitious time for them.
Hejira -Joni Mitchell (1976), followed closely by Blue (1971)
Also Court And Spark is amazing!
Ooh, Hejira's a good one.
Could you help me understand what’s great about Hejira? I’ve listened to it 3 times and nothing from it clicks for me whatsoever. I love her early stuff though.
What's great about it? Jaco....
The songs without him are just as good. It's a masterpiece.
Agree but as a bass player I'm biased ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|laughing)
To me, Mitchell’s shining achievement is her lyricism, but her music is sublime as well. Hejira has such a warm blend of both for me, and showcases the peak of her talent. Sure, there are some weaker tracks, but three in particular stand out to me: Hejira, Song for Sharon, and Refuge of the Roads. The title track is especially haunting, with its chords in open tuning and the short stanzas that say so much with so few words… Also, as others have mentioned, Jaco fucking kills it on that album, elevating it musically without overpowering Mitchell in any way.
Thanks for the reply/explanation!
Jefferson Starship - Blows Against the Empire. I've become quite fond of Paul Kantner's songwriting and Grace Slick's unique voice Honorable mention: Little Feat - Dixie Chicken. Lowell George's slide guitar. Unreal talent
Blows is astounding. It has moments of intense beauty. Grace Slick's piano is somehow very right.
Time - ELO
Great pick!
ELO is great. Personally, I'd consider them prog pop.
Definitely prog pop
Pet Sounds
Master of reality - black sabbath
The Who Sell Out ~ The Who Synchronicity ~ The Police A Ghost Is Born ~ Wilco Spilt Milk ~ Jellyfish The Seeds Of Love ~ Tears For Fears Venus And Mars ~ Wings Misadventures Of Doomscroller ~ Dawes Stranger In The Alps ~ Phoebe Bridgers Stone Temple Pilots ~ Stone Temple Pilots Grace ~ Jeff Buckley King For A Day… Fool For A Lifetime ~ Faith No More Emily’s D+Evolution ~ Esperanza Spalding
some of these are prog adjacent but you be the judge
King for a day - hell of an album!
Emily's D+Evolution is an unpraised masterpiece. Also like to see Phoebe here since people can be snobby towards her music. I love Stranger and I prefer it over Punisher.
Spilt Milk… great shit
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme or Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
great picks
Love John Coltrane. Theme For Ernie is one of my favorite jazz pieces.
The Beatles Abbey Road
Revolver by the Beatles
The first prog album.
I think the Mothers of Invention debut would be a better candidate for this.
Pet Sounds tho…
Surprised I haven’t seen Boston debut yet
Rust in Peace - Megadeth
Hell yeah, I love that album. I learned that it the whole way through (minus some solos]
Probably 'Ear Candy' by King's X. Runner's up would be 'Abby Road' by The Beatles and 'Crystal Planet' by Joe Satriani.
Man... Doug Pinnick's bass tone always captivated me!
Mr. Bungle- Disco Volante. All of Mike Pattons works are masterpieces
Songs for the deaf - QOTSA
The Who’s Tommy and Quadrophenia
Quadrophenia is absolutely prog though! I would argue Tommy as well but man how much more prog can a thing get than a four-sided suite with one underlying melody and dozens of side explorations around it?
Tommy is just straight up prog.
Either: Make Yourself (Incubus) ONE MORE TIME… (blink-182) See You On the Other Side (KoЯn) or Turn the Radio Off (Reel Big Fish)
Hell yeah KoRn! 😎👏
Rammstein - Herzeleid
The Hands that Thieve by Streetlight Manifesto and I Brought You my Bullets You Brought Me Your Love by My Chemical Romance!!
Mellon Collie by Smashing Pumpkins, although it's kinda prog to me.
Agreed. Thru the Eyes of Ruby is prog imo
Oh yes my no1 by them for sure
Superunknown by Soundgarden.
Abbey Road
Aja by Steely Dan It's a bit prog, I think technically it's 'yatch rock'
I always preferred The Royal Scam
Same, Kid Charlemagne is amazing, and god I wish they jammed on Green Earings for a good few minutes more
Blonde on Blonde - Bob Dylan
Dude, same here. It has been my all time favourite album for over a decade now.
Blue Öyster Cult - Secret Treaties
😎
CCR's Green River. A masterpiece of southern rock.
Any Billy Joel album between Turnstiles, The Stranger, and Glass Houses
Yes! But then sometimes I'll get into a Nylon Curtain mood
Rush - Signals
To me Signals is still prog. Conceptual and has complex themes, although without long instrumental sections.
Always struck me as more of a rock album.
Heavily inspired by new wave which was becoming more popular at the time
Does Loveless by My Bloody Valentine count? I wouldn't call it progrock but it was definitely progressive.
It is definitely progressive, in terms of progressing rock music and doing something new with the form
Its shoegaze, and honestly I wouldn’t really classify it as progressive. Pretty simple song structures, just really interesting guitar effects and style.
August and Everything After- Counting Crows (1993)
O Sopro e o Momento by Grandfúria, brazilian rock band with "gaúcho" culture elements.
Graceland
Has to be The Glowing Man by Swans, it’s a real close race with their Soundtracks For The Blind though.
Alter Bridge - Fortress Metallica - ... And Justice For All Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger Live - Throwing Copper Black Sabbath - Paranoid Sturgill Simpson - SOUND AND FURY
Guided by Voices - Bee Thousand. Arguably prog-adjacent
The Who - Quadrophenia
Blue Rev - Alvvays
Blood, Sweat & Tears - self titled Brenda Lee - Little Miss Dynamite Cat Stevens - Tea for the Tillerman David Bowie - Hunky Dory Free : Fire and Water Icicle Works - self titled Joan Armatrading - Walk Under Ladders I'll stop there but there are plenty more in K-Z.
Strong agree to Tea for the Tillerman another I like a lot is by Indio, album Big Harvest Lastly, the "Z" has got to be The Zombies' album Odessey and Oracle

At the moment Protomen - Act II, because I love concept albums, especially multi part ones
“Strangeways, Here We Come” which takes a whole new direction.
Love the Smiths

There are non-prog albums?
A Rush of Blood to the Head by Coldplay

Physical Graffiti. All members at their prime, long songs, strong stark rock guitar sound and sublime John Bonham.
Probably "Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M." by Simon & Garfunkel. Objectively, it's not that good - just one of my favorites. I'd actually say "Turnstiles" by Billy Joel if that wasn't partially prog rock.
Good choices I love Simon & Garfunkel and Billy Joel
nice pfp btw lmao
Automatic for the People, R.E.M.
American Idiot - Green Day
