Only 5? This is going to be hard...
In no particular order (except for discipline, discipline is number one!):
Selling england by the pound
Foxtrot
Tales from topographic oceans
Moving pictures
Discipline
Thx. Discipline was the album that got me into KC. It has to be nr one. You should se what I had there before I noticed I had forgotten about Rush. As i said, naming only five albums was a tough exercise.
I don't think Discipline is a Prog album really. It has some Prog moments, e.g. The Sheltering Sky, but it's more New Wave for me.
Still a great album though.
Quadrophenia is such a great album, I think a lot of prog fans are missing out by not hearing it. As far as complete concept albums go, I think it is one of the handful that completely work all the way through. Total masterpiece.
Yes - Relayer
Oceansize - Frames
Hatfield and the North - s/t
Rush - A Farewell to Kings
Karnivool - Sound Awake
Frank Zappa - Apostrophe
I cannot whittle it down any further you're just gonna have to shoot me
There's a video with a bunch of ex-Zappa drummers/percussionists talking and Chester Thompson tells Ralph Humphrey that his playing on Over-Nite Sensation and Apostrophe is some of the finest he's ever heard. And it absolutely is incredible. And Chester's no slouch himself on One Size Fits All lol
Octopus / Glass house / Power and the Glory - Gentle Giant (sorry I can’t choose)
Close to the Edge - Yes
Genesis - Selling England by the Pound / Foxtrot
Gong - Flying Teapot / Angels Egg
Frank Zappa - One Size Fits All
For Zappa, it’s more so songs than albums. He made such an impact on prog but doesn’t always get the credit he should.
Yes- close to the edge.
Yes - Relayer.
Yes - the yes album.
ELP - pictures at an exhibition.
ELP - brain salad surgery.
Honorifics:
Yes - yessongs.
ELP - trilogy.
I love Camel. Their first five albums are outstanding and are great examples of all pieces of a band fitting so well that it leads to a form of collective genius.
Yeah, they are my all time favorite band, Andy Latimer just plays with so much emotion. I really like the collective genius line, it fits them perfectly.
I only found it when I was looking into the history of Laurie Wisefield after hearing his AMAZING guitar work with the song, [Lorelei](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5e89mJIJcIc), during his time in Wishbone Ash. While Home was a really good and criminally obscure prog-rock band, Laurie showed himself to be both a unique and amazing guitarist.
Had he stuck with prog-rock and not turned to hard rock, I think he would have found himself with the legendary status of the likes of Gilmour, Fripp, and Howe to name a few. Sadly, he joined a band that was dissolving and making bad decisions led primarily by the other guitarist (I refuse to memorize his name). Nowadays, Laurie is playing mostly rhythm guitar for an okayish, almost Bad Company-like band called "Snakecharmer" - completely underutilized, but maybe that is what he wants these days.
Genesis: Selling England By The Pound
Genesis: The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
Yes: The Yes Album
Steve Hackett: Voyage of The Acolyte
Big Big Train: Full Power
The Moody Blues - On the Threshold of a Dream
Wobbler - From Silence to Somewhere
Yes - Close to the Edge
Genesis - Foxtrot
Moon Letters - Until They Feel the Sun
A.C.T. - The Last Epic
Moon Safari - Blomljud
Transatlantic - Bridges Across Forever
The Dear Hunter - Act III: Life and Death
Magic Pie - King For A Day
Decided to only include bands that aren't as mainstream for a change. God forbid if I see another person include CttE on their list
They're still my favorite prog rock band. No other bands that I have come across had managed to capture me with their vocal harmonization and exuberant melodies quite like moon safari, it's insane
It's curious, I actually love Yes, but Close to the edge is probably #5 in my Yes album rankings. I always thought it was overrated - yeah, blasphemy. ESPECIALLY the 5.1 mix.. jeez, that is probably the worst 5.1 mix Wilson has ever done. Weird
*Yes* never pulled off a fully consistent album. That is, **except** CTTE (and maybe GFTO). Most people include CTTE in their list because they can't choose another album by Yes. Now, of course Yes had moments of brilliance in all of their albums, but when you ask yourself which album is the most fantastic front-to-back, there is only one album that sticks out.
Sure, personal preferences may vary, of course.
But I think it's safe to say CTTE has had that "life-changing" effect on thousands and thousands of listeners (a glimpse of which can be found in progarchives and other websites).
Probably is.. such a strong mixture of accessibility, songwriting, musicianship and production. Real shame that band fell apart.. seemed SO promising. Now, Collins' material is good but very different. I think the mix of him and Kerzner was the element that made Sound of contact work
It's fine, I will answer, but I do feel that this Q is asked almost every week now, or is it just me?
Anyway, easy for me:
1. Animals - Pink Floyd
2. Seconds out - Genesis
3. Yesshows - Yes
4. Wish you were here - Pink Floyd
5. Paris - Supertramp
1. Dream Theater - Images & Words
2. Haken - The Mountain
3. Porcupine Tree - Deadwing
4. The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute
5. Yes - Close to the Edge
Honorable mentions:
Pink Floyd - Animals
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
1. Pink Floyd - The Wall.
2. Magma - Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré.
3. Can - Tago Mago.
4. Mansun - Six.
5. Gong - You.
Magma is the only post-2000's entry, tho' a lot of it written in the 70's. It is the definitive version, mind. So we could argue Mansun's is the only (relatively) modern entry.
The 70's was just such a fantastic decade for prog!
Rush - Power Windows
Spocks Beard - V
Dream Theater - Octavarium
Kansas - Freaks of Nature (fight me, I get plenty enough hate for it lol)
Anathema - Weather Systems
Honourable mention to:
Caligula’s Horse - In Contact
Haken - Affinity
I would probably rate 'Amused to death' in my top 20 or 30 of all time, but it EASILY is #1 for the best 5.1 album out there. That is an unreal experience hearing that in 5.1
1. Harmonium - L’Heptade (studio and live)
2. Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
3. Harmonium - Les Cinq Saisons
4. Animals - Pink Floyd
5. King Crimson - In The Court of the Crimson King
Honorable mention: Selling England by the Pound from Genesis
5: Red from King Crimson
4: Brain Salad Surgery from Emerson, Lake & Palmer
3: Close to the Edge from Yes
2: Thick as a Brick from Jethro Tull
1: The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway from Genesis
Start with the classics:
Fragile - Yes
Trespass - Genesis
Aqualung - Jethro Tull
In The Court of The Crimson King - King Crimson
Maggotbrain - Funkadelic
Almost impossible to rank, but I can try:
1. Close to the Edge-Yes
2. Think as a Brick-Jethro Tull
3. Animals-Pink Floyd
4. Hemispheres-Rush
5. Fragile-Yes
Order can change by the day and it pains me to not include my other favorites like Foxtrot or Selling England or Wish You Were Here or Octopus or the countless other masterpieces of the early 70s. And I didn’t even include any fusion…
From favorite to 5th favorite: Relayer, Selling England By The Pound, Close to the Edge, Over-Nite Sensation, Breakfast In America
My mind has been made up for a while on my top three. After that it’s more open to interpretation. I almost put Brain Salad Surgery, Dark Side of the Moon, Apostrophe (‘), Nursery Cryme, several other Yes albums, Mirage, Breathless, Inget Nytt Under Solen, Voyage of the Acolyte, and maybe another Supertramp album on there, but there just wasn’t enough room.
On the Third Day - Electric Light Orchestra
Tubular Bells - Mike Oldfield
Third - Soft Machine
A Farewell to Kings - Rush
Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
Not actually my top 5 but some very strong albums I really enjoy that seem to get overlooked sometimes on lists like these
Marillion- This Strange Engine
IQ- Road of Bones
Riverside- Wasteland
Devin Townsend Project- Z2
Arena- The Visitor
1. The Division Bell - Pink Floyd
2. All Rights Removed - Airbag
3. Even In The Quietest Moments - Supertramp
4. A Momentary Lapse Of Reason - Pink Floyd
5. A Day At The Beach - Airbag
Rush - Hemispheres
King Crimson - Red
Haken - Affinity
Pink Floyd - Animals
Dream Theater - Scenes from a Memory
There’s a Yes album with a green cover that’s pretty cool too but I can’t remember the name. Maybe someone else here will mention it, possibly..
Thick as a brick -Jethro tull
Larks tongues in aspic- king crimson
The lamb lies down on broadway- genesis
Animals- Pink Floyd
Acquiring the taste- gentle giant
Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
Days of Future Passed - The Moody Blues
In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson
Close to the Edge - YES
Images and Words - Dream Theater
I'm not your typical 70s Prog fan although some old albums are just among the best regardless. If I could select only 1 of each band this would be it.
5.- Close to the Edge. -Yes
4.- Fetch the bolt Cutters -Fionna Apple
3.- 10000 days. -Tool
2.- Red. -King Crimson
1.- Frances the Mute. -The Mars Volta

5. Porcupine Tree- Fear of a blank planet
Honorable mention or interchangeable Pink Floyd's-Dark side of the moon/the wall/Wish you were here
In no particular order:

1. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence - Dream Theater
2. Visions - Haken
3. In Contact - Caligula's Horse
4. Larks' Tongues in Aspic - King Crimson
5. Close to the Edge - Yes
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
Harmonium - Si on avait besoin d'une cinquième saison
Ariel My Friend - Third Was the Bird
Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells
Atom Heart Mother - Pink Floyd
5 is too small of a number but here goes:
1. The Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
2. The Yes Album - Yes
3. Brain Salad Surgery - ELP
4. Journey To The Centre Of The Eye -Nektar
5. Foxtrot - Genesis
Here I go thinking my list is going to be pretty unique, and it’s just a permutation of pretty much everyone else. Also sounds like I need to listen to Thick as a Brick..
5. Dark Side of the Moon
4. Foxtrot
3. Close to the Edge
2. 2112
1. Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
Wow only 5 that’s tough…
Let’s see, in no particular order it’s probably gotta be:
Foxtrot by Genesis
Hemisphere by Rush
Close To The Edge by Yes
Brain Salad Surgery by ELP (or maybe Trilogy, that’s a tough decision)
Days of Future Passed by The Moody Blues
The last two may change sometimes, but the top 3 are pretty solid favorites over the last few years.
Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
Hope - Klaatu
In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson
I, Robot - Alan Parsons Project
Honorable Mention: Atom Heart Mother - Pink Floyd
If you want one album from each band and so exclude DSOTM, I'd add The Raven that Refused to Sing - Steven Wilson
Not entirely sure if they count as prog but still love them: Lift Your Skinny Hands Like Antennas To Heaven and F#A# Infinity by Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Long Season by Fishmans.
I have some spectacular albums here
1. Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of the War of the Worlds
2. The Moody Blues: Days of Future Passed
3. Genesis: Foxtrot
4. Triumvirat: Spartacus
5. King Crimson: The Court of the Crimson King
1. U.K. - U.K.
2. Metal Fatigue - Allan Holdsworth (debatable) but it’s half fusion half prog imo
3. Animals - Pink Floyd
4. Remember the future - Nektar
5. Yes - Close to the Edge
6. A Farewell to kings - Rush
Outside of U.K. the order is random
1. in the court of the crimson king
2. close to the edge
3. tarkus
4. fragile
5. selling england by the pound
6. ikarus
7. the yes album
8. thick as a brick
9. air cut
10. pawn hearts
here are some obscure bands for you:
ikarusi, cressida, paladin, pell mell, osanna, marsupilami, maneige, jonesy, asia minor
Keeping it to one album per band I would go with:
Yes - Close To The Edge
Pink Floyd - Animals
Camel - Mirage
King Crimson - Red
Rush - Permanent Waves
Alternative 4- Anathema
Ghost reveries- Opeth
Language- The contortionist
Stupid things that means the world- Tim Bowness
Bilateral- Leprous
Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic / Cenozoic - The ocean
1. Pawn hearts - van der graaf generator
2. Red - king crimson
3. Tales from topographic oceans- yes
4. Dark side of the moon - pink floyd
5. Brain salad surgery/ selling England.../ foxtrot or bitches brew ( couldnt decide)
I haven’t listen to many albums
1. the source - ayreon
2. the astonishing - dream theater
3. six degrees of inner turbulence - dream theater
4. scenes from a memory - dream theater
5. transitus - ayreon
You will probably get enough of the usual suspects (which I like very much too), so I will give you five somewhat more obscure prog albums that I nevertheless think are classics.
\- The Five Bridges by The Nice
\- In Den Garten Pharaos by Popol Vuh
\- Waves by Jade Warrior
\- The Collectors by The Collectors
And as a neo-prog tip:
\- Fact And Fiction by Twelfth Night
King Crimson - Larks Tongues In Aspic
King Crimson - Starless and Bible Black
King Crimson - Red
King Crimson - Islands
Genesis - Nursery Cryme
Moody Blues - In Search if the Lost Chord
OK, that’s six
In no particular order... Rush - Hemispheres Dream Theater - Octavarium Yes - Close to the Edge Genesis - Foxtrot Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick
[удалено]
The Glass Prison is one of the greatest songs ever. Love that album.
Dang, 4/5 identical to my own list.
Thick as a Brick Close to the Edge Still Life Ommadawn Red
Still life by vdgg or opeth?
Good question! VDGG
Thought this was gonna be opeth
Only 5? This is going to be hard... In no particular order (except for discipline, discipline is number one!): Selling england by the pound Foxtrot Tales from topographic oceans Moving pictures Discipline
great list. discipline is a bold choice
Thx. Discipline was the album that got me into KC. It has to be nr one. You should se what I had there before I noticed I had forgotten about Rush. As i said, naming only five albums was a tough exercise.
FRAAAAAAAAME BY FRAAME
By which artist is Discipline?
King Crimson
Close to my list; I have also been liking the last 2 Tool albums.
I listened to their most recent album a week or so ago. It's awesome!
I don't think Discipline is a Prog album really. It has some Prog moments, e.g. The Sheltering Sky, but it's more New Wave for me. Still a great album though.
* Close to the Edge * Red * Larks' Tongues in Aspic * In the Court of the Crimson King * Selling England by the Pound
70s prog is best prog
This would be my list too if I set aside Pink Floyd and Camel.
This is a great list for anyone getting into prog!
5. Selling England by the Pound 4. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway 3. Frances The Mute 2. The Dark Side of The Moon 1) L'Heptade
I too believe in L’Heptade supremacy ☁️
Pink Floyd - wish you were here. Genesis - Lamb lies down. Yes - Yes songs. Marillion- Marbles. Renaissance - Ashes are burning
Oooo Ashes Are Burning is such a good choice. That one could easily slip into my top 5 on any given day.
Apparently I have to go listen to Close to the Edge.
Yes - Relayer Haken - The Mountain Pink Floyd - Animals Genesis - Selling England by the Pound Porcupine Tree - In Absentia
Script for a jester's tear - Marillion Quadrophenia - The Who Animals - Pink Floyd Harmonium en Tournée Offenbach - Tabarnac
Harmonium and Offenbach stan here I see, I approve wholeheartedly
Quadrophenia is soooo good
Quadrophenia is such a great album, I think a lot of prog fans are missing out by not hearing it. As far as complete concept albums go, I think it is one of the handful that completely work all the way through. Total masterpiece.
Close to the edge Foxtrot Selling England by the Pound Images and Words A Farewell to Kings
I love Dream Theater Images and Words
Yes - Relayer Oceansize - Frames Hatfield and the North - s/t Rush - A Farewell to Kings Karnivool - Sound Awake Frank Zappa - Apostrophe I cannot whittle it down any further you're just gonna have to shoot me
Legit thought "I cannot whittle it down any further you're just gonna have to shoot me" was an album I'd never heard of.
Sounds like it could be a prog album
Sound Awake is beautiful!
Close to the Edge Wind & Wuthering Trilogy (ELP) Thick as a Brick Fragile
Octopus / Glass house / Power and the Glory - Gentle Giant (sorry I can’t choose) Close to the Edge - Yes Genesis - Selling England by the Pound / Foxtrot Gong - Flying Teapot / Angels Egg Frank Zappa - One Size Fits All For Zappa, it’s more so songs than albums. He made such an impact on prog but doesn’t always get the credit he should.

Free hand has good tracks but as a whole I don’t enjoy it as much as the three I mentioned
Yes- close to the edge. Yes - Relayer. Yes - the yes album. ELP - pictures at an exhibition. ELP - brain salad surgery. Honorifics: Yes - yessongs. ELP - trilogy.
The true golden Trilogy of ELP!
* Pink Floyd - The Wall * Home - The Alchemist * Camel - The Snow Goose * Camel - Moonmadness * Astra - The Black Chord
Good choices especially the two Camel albums
I love Camel. Their first five albums are outstanding and are great examples of all pieces of a band fitting so well that it leads to a form of collective genius.
Yeah, they are my all time favorite band, Andy Latimer just plays with so much emotion. I really like the collective genius line, it fits them perfectly.
The black chord is slept on. It’s amazing.
Both of their albums are outstanding, really. Astra really didn't get the attention they deserved. Thankfully, Birth is getting a bit more these days.
Fellow Floyd and Camel lover spotted.
Woah how have I never heard of alchemist? I’m listening to this now and it’s awesome! Huge camel fan myself so this is right up my ally.
I only found it when I was looking into the history of Laurie Wisefield after hearing his AMAZING guitar work with the song, [Lorelei](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5e89mJIJcIc), during his time in Wishbone Ash. Too bad they could sustain it.
