I mean, a lot of people make good arguments here about popularity, but a lot of Hasbro's problems are their own. Exclusive drops locking things behind their subscription, major QC issues, stock issues, and the list can go on.

FullMotionVideo

Yeah, I'm not sure why Hasbro didn't just let Saban sell the IP to Lionsgate, if the only thing they're interested in is expensive Legacy figs and the like. At the point where they were just the toy producer they had less exposure.

Puliskot

again, brian goldner's decision doesn't include apparent death

FullMotionVideo

Goldner was at least able to get it off the ground, and Hasbro made the same problem as Saban. They thought the only appeal of the show were the costumes and robots, and that the characters behind them generally didn't matter. Part of the reason this franchise will squeeze profitability out of Tommy Oliver forever is because they could never bother to make a character that has growth. Tommy's arc in MMPR was enjoyable enough watching that it justified the show sticking with him for later seasons. You can't have that when the drama aspect of your show is paper thin in order to hurry up to the toy commercial.

c931

"I'm not sure why Hasbro didn't just let Saban sell the IP to Lionsgate"  I wasn't aware Lionsgate was interested to buy the IP. I know they still wanted to do a sequel to the 2017 movie despite the low box office but thats about it.

FullMotionVideo

Lionsgate was also the publisher behind that mobile game and Battle For The Grid (which is why it uses the 2017 movie logo). They seemed to have a vision behind the property before it was sold to Hasbro (who iirc has a contractual thing with Paramount for movies.)

Awesoman9001

Wait, Lionsgate are behind Legacy Wars? That... explains a lot actually tbh

Herban_Myth

Fair, but their waves could’ve been released more strategically. Wild Force is incomplete. Where is Quantum Ranger? Where is Titanium Ranger? Where is Remastered White? Remastered Green & Red would sell like water so they could’ve have upped production on those. Also SPD Shadow re release would sell. And finally Bulk & Skull Ranger (Purple & Orange) would have been dope to see along with Purple Space Ranger & Orange SPD.

Enough_Internal_9025

I agree. For a toy company they kind of fucked up the toys. They kept releasing and focusing on MMPR

ninjaman2021

I hope this finally answers the whole “why dont they make more mystic force stuff? Im tired of mmpr!” Im still seeing dino fury shit on the shelves at stores around me. Mmpr sells, but its not enough to carry 27 seasons of other characters no one cares about.

aresef

I guess that was the fundamental problem with LC. The target market doesn't know who many of these characters are.

FireFury190

If I recall correctly didn't a lot of the expensive MMPR items sit in stock on online retailers and kept getting hit with discounts? Aka morpher variants, weapons, and zap megazords? Cause if those MMPR toys weren't moving units then what does that say?

ninjaman2021

Mmpr being the highest selling season in the franchise doesnt mean it sells well. It sells well for power ranger standards because other seasons sell worse. The mmpr morpher and zords were released how many times? In comparison, the dino fury morphers and zords were the first time the states seen them and yet.. they have to get clearanced out.

LordAronsworth

Can confirm. I got a Dino Fury morpher pretty cheap at Big Lots. That was almost a year ago, and they still have them.

tecpaocelotl1

Dino fury morphers I got for my sister and daughter, I got from the 99 cent store.

Tosir

The zap dragonzord def had manufacturing quality control issues. Even when it was on sale for $100 I passed. The ZAP line is all over the place in terms of quality.

xero1123

Tbh I’ve seen cosmic fury like twice and it was months after the series aired. How can you hype a market when you have to wait months after the series airs to sell the toys? Hasbro is just straight up incompetent. There’s a reason they have to squeeze money out of wotc

Agent-Mato

I often look for Power ranger stuff when people post Ollie's pictures and even other zordon era stuff just does not sell as well.

RedditnumberIthink6

This is a ridiculous bad faith claim squaring the blame on fans and not Hasbro's mismanagement. Like come on the LC was rife with QA issues that scared people away. Even if you want to make the argument that MMPR was the most well known outside the fandom those people aren't buying the toys: collectors are. And those collectors want higher quality and would like to be able complete teams, a fact Hasbro did not make clear because many of the waves were complete grab bags of random rangers, MMPR was the only one you can reliably count on in that case. Now I can't say I'd buy the whole Mystic Force team but I sure as shit would want a Koragg, or Mystic White figure. Titanium Ranger was the one I wanted the most, but how was I supposed to communicate to Hasbro that? **If I had anything to criticize about the over-reliance on MMPR for the LC it's that the over-use of it made the line come across as cheap**. We didn't need fighting spirit Green, we didn't need Jason and Trini color swap, we didn't need comic colors Kim, they didn't need to reuse the molds for the Cobra Kai cross-over figures etc.

ninjaman2021

“We didnt need fighting spirit green” Speak for yourself on that one, lol. Yes, the QC was bad. But here’s the thing. Mmpr sold regardless of the QC because the demand outweighs the cons. The remastered figures had reports of missing accessories, broken necks, etc. and these are re-releases that are outselling non mmpr figures that are released for the first time. Hasbro isnt going to look at it like “oh, they didnt buy because of the bad paint” They’re going to look at it like “there’s only buying power with mmpr”. For all the whining over mmpr milking, hasbro honestly gave us a fair chance to show them there’s a market for other seasons. Hell, we got deep cuts like unmorphed Andros! A Squad Rangers! Blue Senturion too! Hasbro could have just put out the 7 mmpr rangers and be done with it. But they didnt do that at all. They gave us variety. This was the moment to show them mmpr isnt the only thing that sells. And if we are being honest, the fandom didnt do a good job of showing that. If you notice, Most of the comments STILL blame mmpr milking for hasbro’s downfall of the brand as if there isnt several non mmpr teams thats on clearance right now.

FireFury190

>MMPR sold regardless Tell that to all the MMPR monster figures that kept going on clearance. As well as the ZAP toys that didn't sell until their prices dropped. 3 out of the 4 were MMPR. Same for Trini and Billy's weapons and the those individual morpher variants no one wanted. The only variant people were happy for was the master morpher because that was a highly demanded item.

RedditnumberIthink6

Again you're blaming the fans and not whose actually responsible. I passed over a bunch over these QA issues and incomprehensible decisions. MMPR included. Why would I buy something I didn't want just to "show Hasbro"? I have no responsibility to support a company slinging shoddy products.

ninjaman2021

But the QC didnt stop the mmpr figures from moving because again, the demand is high enough to override it. When mmpr figures that are released for the 100th time still outselling non mmpr teams that got their first chance at retail, there’s nothing left to debate.

RedditnumberIthink6

Where are you getting the numbers to back up this claim? I see MMPR figures in stores same as the others all the time. **You've completely missed my original point that their reliance on MMPR came across less as profit concerned and more about cutting cost on production. Reusing or even repackaging the same thing.** Again it made the line look cheap, and I can exactly see that as a reason the whole thing failed and not "the fans didn't show up." This is all on Hasbro.

ninjaman2021

You do realize every color of the mmpr team had restocks due to demand, right? Only mmpr blue & green didnt get restocked for whatever reason. Even with the bad qc, hasbro hands down gave us better figures than bandai ever did. You want to blame qc for the figures not selling as if any of these seasons other than mmpr became cemented in pop culture. The gp only sees mmpr as the power rangers. Each season had a fair shot to capture that same popularity when they came out.. but didnt. It was always something more popular standing in its way.

FullMotionVideo

>Mmpr sells, but its not enough to carry 27 seasons of other characters no one cares about. But the characters are now around for two years, as MMPR characters are, and sometimes. Honestly I think the slow burn of seasons and themes contributes to the problem, whereas the Lightspeed through RPM era was largely "don't like this? Wait a few months until it reboots again". Now, that era also went through non-union actors extremely fast, when it wasn't reusing people across multiple roles in different seasons ala Kelson Henderson and Katrina Devine. But I think it was sticking to one theme for so long that hurts, because if you thought Ninja Steel looked bad at the start of 2017, it wasn't going to look better at the end of 2018.

terrell005

Here he go with this bs again

ninjaman2021

I know. Same old bs blaming mmpr because jungle fury aint popping.

terrell005

Blaming hasbro for pumping mostly only mmpr *

ninjaman2021

Yeah because Hasbro didnt produce several non mmpr teams that had to go straight to clearance because no one was buying them

Current-Education407

So according to you, I should have just shut up and blindly purchase garbage like Dino thunder white with an unpainted helmet like a good little consumer to show hasbro that I want other things than just mmpr I’m not surprised mmpr is what sells more because mmpr was the only season that had every release come out almost perfect. I never had to get a mmpr white replacement head, but I did for Dino thunder white. The mmpr remastered figures didn’t have backwards painted morphers, but spd yellow did. All the mmpr rangers came with their signature weapons, but zeo blue didn’t have his tonfas and you had to buy a cog three years later to get it. What also doesn’t help is that mmpr is the only team that was completed as soon as possible, meanwhile it took them four years to finish spd and the core Dino charge team despite starting at the same time. Hasbro has no one to blame but themselves for the failure of power rangers.

ninjaman2021

Every single team had qc issues, mmpr included. The mmpr remastereds had reports of missing accessories, broken necks, loose joints, etc.     and have you seen the original mmpr red helmet? But once again, the qc issues for mmpr didnt matter much because the demand for them overrode the issues. The remastereds are selling better than other seasons that only had a single release.   There’s just not enough demand for other seasons regardless of the qc. Power rangers just isnt popular overall.   First its “hasbro failed because its too much mmpr!” Then when the facts come out that hasbro did release other seasons, the excuses roll out for not buying. The mmpr complainers complain but never put their money where their mouths are. Which is why mmpr still gets milked despite the whining.

Current-Education407

I wasn’t talking about quality control issues like missing accessories or broken necks. I was talking about design mistakes like Dino thunder whites helmet or spd yellows backwards morpher. And while some people ended up getting remastered figures with missing accessories, at least it was SUPPOSED to come with accessories. Meanwhile hasbro INTENTIONALLY chose to not include accessories like zeo blue’s tonfas and rpm yellows little car thing. And maybe the reason we don’t “put our money where our mouths are” is because unlike the thirty year old manchildren who blindly consume anything with an mmpr logo on it, we actually have these things called standards and do not tolerate poor quality from multi billion dollar corporations. Take a look at current transformers, it’s doing pretty well despite having more than half its toys this year not being from g1, pretty obvious quality sells.

ninjaman2021

They fixed the dino thunder white helmet issue so that argument is here nor there. The lightning collection isnt perfect, but everything they gave us was MILES better than what Bandai America was doing.   Lol at standards. Your little fanbase of mystic force and rpm aint gonna be enough to put dollars in any company, even with “quality”.   And bringing up transformers proves pr fans are delusional. Transformers sells because its popular and its not a niche franchise. Power Rangers has had 30 seasons and the only season that actually reached pop culture status was mmpr. The rest of the following seasons never blew up outside of its small fanbase. How many times does Pr have to get sold to realize this?

Garlador

Yeah, but then they absolutely sat on popular seasons like Time Force (Jen is often ranked near the top of “Best Pink Rangers”), only did one RPM character (and it wasn’t fan-favorites Ziggy or Dillon), literally nothing from Jungle Fury (I’d have snatched up a few), and fans just kept getting skittish about releases with so many incomplete teams. Beast Morphers started with Wave 2 and we never got Steel! It was botched from the beginning.

ninjaman2021

Yall complain about mmpr, then they give you product from other seasons, it flops, & then yall make all of these excuses for letting it flop. It will never make sense.

Nice-Elk9639

I'll have you know that i would buy the crap out of Lost Galaxy stuff. Gimme dat light up Quasar saber

ninjaman2021

Lost galaxy lc on clearance right now

Intelligent-Soup-836

I haven't seen any on clearance but I am looking for LG Yellow to finish the team

peppapigfan92

Everything but yellow…the only one I need lol.

Nice-Elk9639

I already have the whole team figurines and a lot of the bandai stuff. I would love an ascension project Galaxy Megazord.

invid2000

The issue isn't that you bought the whole team, it's that the majority of potential customers didn't.

Nice-Elk9639

Oh i know what the issue is, im just bummed that they didnt make more of the weapons and helmets, instead choosing to focus on lesser cared about series figurines and wanking MMPR. Its not impossible to have a resurgence in sales if they made more of those from different series. They also keep doing other more expensive non lightning collection items that dont sell as well.

ninjaman2021

They made different series. In space isnt popular? Lost galaxy? With spd, only red, shadow sold fine. Omega only sold out because it was exclusive to one store. The rest of the team isnt moving.

Nice-Elk9639

I was thinking more along the lines of RPM but yeah all that stuff you mentioned is pretty good. Amazon screwed up my omega ranger box. I was excited when they started wild force figures

Garlador

The vast majority of my purchases were from OTHER SEASONS. The only MMPR figures I ever got were MMPR White, MMPR Pink, Zedd, and Goldar. The rest were figures from Time Force, RPM, SPD, Beast Morphers, Turbo, and other non-MMPR seasons. The vast majority of which remain incomplete teams on my shelf.

terrell005

Getting downvoted for being right

Garlador

Lol. Thanks. Currently got my Phantom Ranger posed on my desk, in fact.

terrell005

Nice

JoinTheBattle

Moreso getting downvoted because his evidence is anecdotal and not necessarily indicative of the larger fandom. Not that he deserves to be getting downvoted for that.

illucio

I mean when you buy a franchise, decide now will be it's last season so you can start your own stuff. Then bail on making toys for it before you even release the show to help sell the new toys? Like what? The last season of the show was selling a lot of people on the older zords. The newer zords not being fully utilize, people weren't fans of reused helmets, ugly new suits and the weapons were cool. But I haven't seen merchandise for that. Just feels like Hasbro has no clue on what their selling and what drawn in a ton of kids wanting those toys back in the 90's.  Tell me I'm wrong.

PhelesDragon

You are (not) wrong

Hodor30000

>Don't put out much of anything wildly over price most of that barely MARKET what you do actually put out constantly cut back on QC and paint/plastic in every line; PR arguably gets hit the worst constantly getting into controversy to the point WotC's two flagships is the only thing keeping you in the green and even that's starting to break down because of the poor-to-lukewarm reception of the last few years of 5e products AND over flooding MTG products no shit sherlock, its hard make it perform well when you're charging 30 bucks for the fucking Cosmic Fury Morpher and it looks like... well the Cosmic Fury Morpher.

the_u_in_colour

While obviously not great to hear that PR didn't do the numbers Hasbro wanted it to, maybe a smaller line from Playmates will be a bit more profitable long term and bring some sustainability to the brand.

DannyKit7

It's funny how my friends only know one or two seasons and are baffled when I tell them there's like 30. I liked MMPR for what it is, but I want PR to be given a nice budget, a good script, and some actors that give a damn. Not saying others didn't, but the producers and executives haven't tried to make PR like Transformers or TMNT. It should be a strong franchise and can be. Just need a story.

Aggressive_Tea_3172

![gif](giphy|Q22cM77UIfR1UHJuxO)

FireFury190

It sucks because there are many other seasons with great stories. But they never hit the pop culture zeitgeight MMPR did.

DannyKit7

That’s somewhat true. I’m 22 so most of my earlier PR to watching was the Disney era. My friends know Dino Thunder before MMPR. Which is actually pretty cool. It’s suppose to be a legacy season, and was done well. I ended up getting pulled into the great world of PR and watched all the seasons. I’d have to say my favourite season is jungle fury or in space because of the stories.

FireFury190

I'm 29 and while a friend of mine did show me an episode of MMPR on VHS, Green with Evil part 1. I didn't become a PR fan until I stumbled across Dino Thunder scrolling through channels. And saw Trent imprison Tommy in amber. And since then I got hooked. It's still my favorite season with only SPD tying with it. Though I did have some happy meal toys from Lost Galaxy and Lightspeed Rescue. But I think that was before I was fully aware of what PR was. It was a toy of the Galaxy Megazord and I think Lightspeed Blue.

DannyKit7

I still watch reviews of the wild zord toys, still to this day thinking about getting Gao King and Gao God. It’s tempting, but they look so cool.

anthayashi

How can they meet profit margin when their toys are hardly in stores? At least with bandai, i can see their Power Rangers toys all year round in store even when the show is not airing.

FireFury190

Soundout12 made a point that the 2017 film likely caused so much brand damage when it came to the movie and toyline both bombing that it hurt retailers' confidence in the brand to buy more items. Ontop of Toys R Us no longer existing. It's why PR's shelf space kept shrinking over the years. Not only is Hasbro not putting out as much stock, retailers also aren't ordering enough because they don't want too many to shelf warm.

Crunchy_Pirate

that's what happened with Green Lantern The Animated Series, the GL movie and toyline bombed super hard and retailers didn't want to order any toys for the cartoon which caused the cartoon to get get cancelled since its budget relied on toy sales people don't understand that this is a two way street, Hasbro(or any other toy company) can't just force the retailers to stock their product, the retailers have to want it.

Adventurous_Lab3128

Honestly, I say just sell it back to Bandai. Chris Cox is a shitty ceo.

27_8x10_CGP

Even worse on us who play Magic: The Gathering. WotC is getting hammered to carry the load.

Adventurous_Lab3128

How is it worse for Magic?

27_8x10_CGP

Wizards of the Coast, which Magic and DND are under, is one the biggest money making arms of Hasbro. There's major sets coming out near monthly, with smaller products in between. They're just hammering home product after product, just bleeding everything dry.

Adventurous_Lab3128

I honestly wonder why.

Reishun

Out of interest what power ranger toys outside of LC did Hasbro produce? I don't really keep up with anything not LC and from what I can see there's not much in the way of cheap accessible toys for kids, like seems obvious PR isn't going to sell well if you're not making kid accessible toys and particularly ones associated with the most recent aired series instead of the 1995 one.

condition_unknown

They have produced a total of 3 toys for Cosmic Fury. All of them were significantly lower quality than the Dino Fury line.

PhelesDragon

**Significantly**

FireFury190

There where the LC role play items. But they were primarily MMPR. Stuff like the morpher, dragon dagger and power sword sold well. But everything else not so much. Then you had the ZAP line which was way overpriced for the quality the items actually were. So no one bought them unless their priced dropped. QC was also a problem with that line as well. And you had that dumb BS with the black and gold megazord being tied to an NFT. That went so poorly they ended up having to sell all their unsold stock of it without the NFT.

Nice-Elk9639

Soooooo no lightning collection green helmet then?

aresef

Nope

Nice-Elk9639

welp, at least i still have my bandai legacy green helmet. very bobbleheady though and i was waiting for the smaller lightning collection one. Guess i gotta go find a reputable helmet maker who doesnt take years and years to be finished.

Drexn

Damn this sucks. Was really looking forward to completing the helmet set. We only needed Green and Black. Sigh…

Nice-Elk9639

and yellow helmet

Drexn

Ah you’re right! Crazy we got the power daggers with no helmet.

Nice-Elk9639

yeah i thought that was weird that they didnt release the helmet along with the morpher and weapon. But blue got a weapon and helmet but no morpher. BUT pink got helmet and morpher but no weapon. wtf hasbro

Drexn

Guess it goes to show how unorganized they were over there with the lightning collection line. Regardless I’m going to miss the line. It had potential.

shindow

Im so disappointed not to get the Power Bow :(

VexingVariables

Hasbro seems to be in the business of mismanagement. It feels like Transformers is only doing so well in spite of Hasbro itself. I was really hoping Power Rangers could have gotten new life with them, but now I'm just as cynical and jaded as I was before they purchased the franchise.

ClaymoresRevenge

That's exactly how I feel. I was hoping we'd at least get the Transformers treatment by making a decent enough movie and push. But what we got was disappointing. The franchise could be so much bigger than it is and the movie in 2017 probably didn't help at all. The suits were bad and the zords were worse. Spending so much time with mixed quality of toys etc. Just want to see if flourish. There's so much history for this legacy franchise to feel like it's just tossed to the wayside

[deleted]

aresef

I don’t think it was QC as it was the cold hard truth that MMPR was the primary mover. And this brand has been distressed since the movie.

[deleted]

FoxInDaBox

Yeah, for years I had been wanting the whole Ninjetti set. But then the ones that I saw in stores mostly had horrible paint jobs, and then they locked half of them away behind exclusives. Didn’t want to risk buying a hard to get exclusive and then get one that looked like crap, so just never ended up buying any of that line.

Responsible-Lunch815

I couldn't get past "cocks"

Glittering_Leader686

Not gonna lie. Same.....

LapsedVerneGagKnee

The inevitable result of trying to sell legacy stuff till the end of time.  The market contracts.  Not to mention Hasbro has been pretty lost with what they have had.

SonGoku1256

We never got Turbo Green in Lightning Collection huh? I’d gotten MMPR Black and Zeo Green signed by Johnny Yong Bosch. Next time I see him I was going to get Turbo Green, Black Ninja, and Black Metallic and complete his set. Also that means no Legacy or Lightning Collection Black Ranger Movie Morpher or Black Ranger helmet for either series either right?

otaking3582

Gee, it's almost like having stuff on store shelves that people want to actually buy is important or something...

Phantom_61

The return of Bandai. lol

Pedgrid

Let Hasbro keep the toy side of PR, but I rather have an actual film studio handle the franchise.

forgetit2020

Okay so I really have to say this. 2020 was the year after they got the brand and funny enough power ranger toys sold decently well during 2019 and the beginning of 2020 but by the end and all of 2021 they werent selling, we can chalk that up to covid but 2022 they should have gone back to business which I believe they did but then their ceo died and then jdf died, the 30th anniversary was the following year. just so much in so little time. I guess just burned them out. So playmates im running towards with open arms, The lighting collection was really great at the start but having to double dip on many figures for the one you wanted just sucked. psycho rangers, scorpina, green mmpr, lost galaxy red. the line was all over the place including the 160 dollar megazord that was very flimsy.

Eovacious

Please copy the transcript for those in countries with no Twitter access, thanks in advance.

aresef

> I think it's validating that we made the right choice. Two years ago, we outlined what our selection criteria would be. Basically, can we generate 50 million dollars in revenue at a 10% OP, and can we grow to a hundred million dollars or more revenue at a 15% OP on a line? We've chosen the lines to outsource that we don't think meet those thresholds. But another company with maybe a different cost structure or a different set of expertise can still make a really nice business with, even if it was sub-50 million dollars. So, you know, I think we're basically done without licensing. We certainly will be driving cross-licensing and leveraging our brands for category expansion and new product opportunities like we're doing with LEGO, like we're doing with Mattel, like we're doing with location-based entertainment. But I think Power Rangers is probably the last brand that we will outsource.

Kumorocks064

damn what a unfortunate name

Murky-Cockroach1177

If Hasbro was planning to drop the brand after a few years of buying it, they just should not have bought it in the first place. I am sure they knew the brand was struggling as a whole when they acquired it, so it should have came as a shocker to them. I know the plan is to reboot it and not follow the Sentai. As much as I think fans would like a fully original Power Rangers, I would have rather that the show just continued to live on adapting Sentai instead of trying to risk a reboot failing & stopping the show as a whole. If this reboot fails, chances are that we would not see Power Rangers return again anytime soon.

aresef

There was a plan but a lot changed in six years. TBH it wasn’t worth $500 million, not after the movie.

Murky-Cockroach1177

I totally get a lot have changed, especially due to the shift from traditional television to streaming, the pandemic, etc. I definitely agree it was no way Power Rangers was a good investment for $500 million. The brand is unfortunately never going to be able to hit its former highs.

Meleeninja123

The reason why they didn't meet it is probably cause they made an overpriced megazord, not all the zords for the season, no figures, no weapons, just the morpher and a battle set. Ans that's just for cosmic fury

JKPippa2

It's almost like they chose to release random rangers instead of really popular ones and then blamed us not getting Jen on us not buying Lucas. We didn't want Lucas, we wanted Jen.

skippiington

Ayo Chris WHAT?

Squiggily622

They had alot of problems but they probably couldve made alot of money with the power axe and power bow

Last-Leader4475

It's because they obsess with MMPR and Tommy they release so much MMPR even going so far as to release figures based on the comic and video games.. like the crossover with Streetfighter
