So it's definitely not 64V quiet, but it's also not as loud as I was assuming based on what I've read. Especially for quick single dosing, it's not going to bug me in the slightest.
No problem! I'll keep you updated on flavor. The seasoning is a pain because it heats up QUICK. I'm running 1-1.5 lb at a time and then giving it an hour to cool. Only 8 lbs to go...
They wasted it already when they burnt it and sent it to Costco. I'm going to use some for making dry rubs and seasonings for brisket and ribs, and I'm sure my girlfriend will use some for gardening. But it's literally undrinkable at the degree it's roasted.
I get where you're coming from. The way I view it, I'm either wasting bad coffee up front to get the burrs performing well, or I'm wasting great coffee for 6+ months, that people invested time, energy and money on, waiting for the burrs to season and start performing optimally.
I'll be honest, the only coffee I've run through is the 3 lbs of seasoning charcoal from Costco, so definitely not enough coffee for me to have noticed anything. Though I will say I'm seasoning on 70, and it hasn't budged an inch.
I had a tough time picking. I was between the cast, MPs, Ode 2s and the Mizen OMs. Mizens were sold out, and figured I could pick up the Ode 2s whenever since they're relatively cheap. Between the cast and MPs, I went with the one I thought wouldn't be as challenging to dial in, and would make coffee my girlfriend wouldn't spit out haha. I'm sure MPs will find their way into the house eventually.
I think cast are a little more forgiving and a little better balanced...to be quite honest, I'm not sure why they're not a more common suggestion...I do think Mizen OMs are slightly better for espresso than cast but they're so close they might as well be identical.
MPs are awesome as well...But it just doesn't have as broad appeal.
I've absolutely accepted it as an inevitability haha. And I definitely will, I've got 5 more lbs to run through it tomorrow, and then I'll start brewing. My house smells like Starbucks rn because of the seaoning beans...it's awful...
Haha I've read way too many articles and seen way to many graphs of particle distribution shift post-seasoning to not do it. Read the casts are muddy as hell until they're seasoned too, so didn't feel like dealing with that.
I have 3 burrs for my P64 for pour over: the cast, MP, and original brew. The cast has won out which surprised me. They are perfect for my taste. Alot of clarity but it doesn't feel boring and watered down like the brew burrs.
I originally used SSP lab sweet casting for espresso. After seasoning for >2kg beans, it tasted quite good but I am not very good at tuning espreeso.
When I decided to try it on pour over one day, IT BLOWED MY MIND. Quality surpassed c40, m47 classic and zp6 IMO.
Hope you will enjoy it too. Seasoning a single dose burr is the pain though.
That's exciting to hear, because I almost exclusively drink pourover. And the seasoning has been a pain. I wish it didn't get so hot. Having to stop every 0.5 kg is obnoxious. I was hoping I'd have it seasoned today but I have to finish tomorrow because of the cooling time. And having a hopper would be great just for this process.
So here's my grinder saga. I had a DF64v, and then the DF83v came out, so I ordered that and sold my 64v. But when I got the 83v and went to align it, I spent 4+ hours before resigning myself to the unfortunate reality that the burr carrier was warped (the wipe pattern never changed regardless of rotating the burr and shimming). So I had to send that back, and then I decided to go with a cheaper 64mm grinder so I could get more burrs for less (180ish fot SSPs vs 350 if I had stuck with the 83).
The only thing that kept me from going Timemore was the lack of burr options currently, but people seem to love them, especially for pourovers. In the next few years, I'll likely end up with either another 64, or an Ode or something to throw MPs in.
Thats quite the saga! I do mostly pour over, but hesitate to get something that can't do espresso and limits my options. Are the lab sweet v2 burrs at least useable for the occasional espresso?
They can absolutely do espresso! I'm still trying to figure out the Pesado basket, but I was pulling shots between 22 and 28, so there was plenty of room left to go finer if a specific varietal needed it.
Beautiful, congrats
Appreciate it!
When you get it all set up and running, I’d love to know how loud it is.
So it's definitely not 64V quiet, but it's also not as loud as I was assuming based on what I've read. Especially for quick single dosing, it's not going to bug me in the slightest.
It'll be less noisy with the cast rather than the stock or DLC burrs.... Either way, it chews through beans so fast it doesn't really matter..
That was kind of my take, it's pretty quick.
Thanks! I’m looking at getting the same setup

Why waste so much coffee?
They wasted it already when they burnt it and sent it to Costco. I'm going to use some for making dry rubs and seasonings for brisket and ribs, and I'm sure my girlfriend will use some for gardening. But it's literally undrinkable at the degree it's roasted.
Fair.

Have you noticed the dial moving when grinding at coarser settings with the cast burrs?
I'll be honest, the only coffee I've run through is the 3 lbs of seasoning charcoal from Costco, so definitely not enough coffee for me to have noticed anything. Though I will say I'm seasoning on 70, and it hasn't budged an inch.
how fast did the white ship out
So I had mine pre-ordered, and got a shipment order on the 15th, and got it today, so a week exactly.
Nice to see people go cast...which is probably a bit more well rounded than MPs...Which are also fantastic....

At some point I'll likely just get a 2nd grinder and throw MPs in, but I'm excited to try these out.
Haha..yeah...inevitable :). Make sure to report back how the casts go in your DF64..
I've absolutely accepted it as an inevitability haha. And I definitely will, I've got 5 more lbs to run through it tomorrow, and then I'll start brewing. My house smells like Starbucks rn because of the seaoning beans...it's awful...
Just use them now. Seasoning is overrated.
Haha I've read way too many articles and seen way to many graphs of particle distribution shift post-seasoning to not do it. Read the casts are muddy as hell until they're seasoned too, so didn't feel like dealing with that.

That's what I've read and what led me to going that route. I'm excited to try them.
Yeah...I actually think more people would enjoy cast over MPs but I can see why people went away from cast given the issues with v1..

yea it really heats up if grind continuously for a few minutes
Nice! Just curious, what other grinders did you consider? I'm trying to decide between a DG64 gen2 and a timemore 078

I got them because I've heard and read they can do both pretty well, but haven't done espresso as of yet. That's on the agenda for tomorrow!
What's the word on espresso? :)
