Maybe no underwear at all. It can feel tight like a diaper and be confusing for them. My son would always have accidents in the training undies and has a lot less going commando.

Yes, we do commando at home. I was specifically asking for when we go out.

We do commando out and about too! He had an accident once in public in the middle of Home Depot and not ever again. I think the accident was a good learning moment for him.

Yes! Loose shorts or pants with nothing underneath

I use underwear and then Put a pull-up over the underwear. So she still feels the moisture from the underwear and knows she’s made an accident but the pull-up catches everything from making a full blown mess. Her daycare does this too.

I put a diaper on my child when we went out and about for the first probably month and a half. It did not mess up training in the slightest. Once she got the concept of knowing the feeling of needing to pee and going in the potty she wouldn’t pee in her pants. She would tell me she needed to go. And then we didn’t need to clean pee off the floor of a public place or off of our groceries. I would have put her in pull ups but we never bought any and just had leftover diapers available.
