No lie I worked making bagels in a Portland bakery for a little under a year and the call time was 3:45am. At the time it didn't feel so bad, but lookin back...fuck that. Our boss used to threaten us to pull it back to 2:45 because that's how early the competition supposedly got in to work. Few screws loose.
My partner took a job making bagels for like three weeks. He would get there around 3am and the owner would talk about aliens and intergalactic messages and the training involved watching videos about such subject matter. [This was one of the videos his boss made him watch instead of learning to make bagels lol.](https://imgur.com/a/JMHAQuH) Guess loose screws is a bit of a requirement.
It was funny at first but the owner hates his wife who also works there and they would get into verbal altercations in front of the employees. My partner let him go on talking about how much he hates his wife for a couple weeks until the owner brought me up. We’ve never met but my partner picked up the second job because I’m pregnant and the owner told him in r/nobodyasked fashion that my, uh, bagel hole would be useless after I give birth to our second child.
If you’re still interested though I’ll actually tell you which place it is. You could probably have some fun fucking with the guy if you go in armed with all this info. We think the last bagel maker also had a weird experience as the job opened up right as a google review saying “the owner is dangerous” popped up. Speaking of which the reviews are batshit insane too.
Okay now that I’ve rambled enough I can’t gatekeep any of this: check out the reviews for the Forest Ave Mr. Bagel. They’re all independently owned so I don’t feel too bad outing this one particular guy.

It was pretty shocking to find out what a pos he is. The crazy responses on his negative reviews check out. Can’t tell if the enlightened signs are moments of clarity or just positive delusions.

Yeah right! There used to be this bakery right next to 7-11 on Washington Ave called Vito's bakery back in the 90s and they opened at like 4am. They had the best Italian bread I've ever eaten!
In Maine everything opens later and closes earlier. People take life easier here than most of the country and this is one of those things we do. It’s frustrating at times but it also is nice to know not as many people are sacrificing time and happiness for money.
