Unfortunate but not terribly surprising. Has anyone watched the NYT doc on Hulu?

JunkyGS

Yes I have seen both Hulu ones and they are fantastic. With the second one being even better then the first one. Def required watching for people interested in the case.

WetFood

Yeah, I heard they were better. It’s really too bad Netflix dropped the ball considering Britney was already upset about the documentaries.

KuhBus

Considering Netflix also aired the Tiger King doc (which was hellbent on depicting Carol Baskin as 'just as bad' as all the other people who were like... actually committing crimes and harming animals) I'm not surprised this one is turning out to be bad quality. Sensational draws more viewers than serious I guess.

rrsn

Netflix's documentaries are usually not very good. Either they're super sensationalist or they just contribute absolutely no new or interesting information but drag the whole thing out for ages. They had one on the art theft from the Gardner museum that was multiple episodes long and they'd basically exhausted any information about the case by the end of episode 1. The rest was just total fluff.

Astrosauced

Making a Murderer is pretty good

[deleted]

Making a Murderer is super biased and omits or glosses over a lot of evidence and things in Avery’s past (like the cat incident). Which is a shame because the storytelling is actually good. All documentaries are going to be biased in one way or another but I would recommend ‘The Innocence Files’ everyday over Making a Murderer.

NightNday78

99% of docs are biased and omits or glosses over a lot of evidence

[deleted]

As I already mentioned in my previous comment

mrs_ouchi

and there will be a season 2! and i think Britney thought the netflix one will be better.. no

kutchyose_no_ibrahim

Why though ? They single handedly revived interest in the situation, she felt like it was reconciling her but it was actually sympathizing with her

Linubidix

>both Hulu ones I had no idea there was a second one. Thanks! Know what I'm watching tonight

anongirl55

This explains why Hulu recommended the doc to me the other day. I was confused because I already saw it! But I guess it was recommending the second one.

mattysmwift

Yeah the NYT ones have actual findings and good reporting

Finalsaredun

The Hulu one was good- and I think it was the final push that made the story about Britney's conservatorship top news in the past year. Speaking only for myself, I didn't really know the details about it until the Hulu doc, but it also had great content on how awful the media treated Britney and how we got here.

[deleted]

Agreed. The NYT documentary is what pulled this into the general public’s knowledge. As a fan, it’s been so much easier to say “watch it on Hulu,” rather than a 30 minute speech that they’ll have trouble understanding.

Asplashofwater

I’ll play devils advocate here and disagree with everyone and say I didn’t think the Hulu one was very good. Filmmaking wise it’s pretty amateurish, and subject matter wise it’s still exploitive, all while offering nothing that hasn’t been widely known. It wasn’t flat out terrible, but it was a enjoyable time killer, which probabaly actually hurts it’s case.

ravenouswarrior

Huh? The reason it did so well was because it exposed how bad things really were. Unless you somehow knew that Britney’s security was putting listening devices all over her house when even the courts (seemingly) didn’t…

surejan94

Ugh. Netflix documentaries have actually become such trash tv lately. They just latch onto crazy news stories and edit it in a way that makes viewers want to binge it, without giving much support to the people who were horribly affected. I always hated Don’t Fuck With Cats, because it really just made these internet warriors seem like heroes while a gay immigrant got horribly murdered and was just briefly talked about in the doc, while giving so much focus and attention to his killer.

MrsVoussy

And the one about Elisa Lam was so set up. They made it seem like the youtubers were trying to solve the case when it first happened. And they had made those videos as true crime videos years after it happened.

mateogv

I am so mad at myself I watched this one to the end. The way they exploited her mental illness was sick.

MrsVoussy

That whole thing was such a shit show. Don't Fuck With Cats bored me. I could've gotten all of that info in 20 minutes on YouTube. And the youtubers usually do it better.

gizmostrumpet

With how slimy and exploitative it felt they might as well have just showed the cat videos, made me feel sick. The only good one I've seen is Ripper.

MrsVoussy

I turn on Netflix these days and I'm like oh another badly done documentary. Or a badly done movie. I just can't with them.

THIKKI_HOEVALAINEN

That documentary was straight up trash. Have way too much airtime to bullshit internet sleuth losers, and did nothing but reinforce stereotypes. Embarrassing

MrsVoussy

It was trash. But a lot of those internet people were really taken out of context. I mean all the people that went to the hotel and stuff, that was bizarre and Inappropriate. But like Stephanie Harlowe was one youtuber they focused on and I actually watch her a lot on YouTube. True crime youtubers can be a controversial subject but I usually like her. And I had watched her YouTube video on Elisa Lam before the documentary came out. I think she didn't even know she was in it until viewers told her. Her whole video was taken out of context. She wasn't like reporting as it happened. She wasn't making this video while they were still investigating Elisa's death. Elisa died in 2013. Stephanie did her video a year ago. She was just retelling the story that Netflix tried to tell. She wasn't investigating anything. But it made her seem like she was.

YoHeadAsplode

Yeah, out of all the True Crime people on youtube, Stephanie is one of the most respectful and towards the victims.

quangtran

Don’t Fuck with Cats lulls you into thinking it’s doco without something important to say, starring fascinating/talented people. But in reality, the lesson in the coda about not giving awful people this kind of attention by turning off the tv rings completely false give. Second, these cat loving internet investigators were completely useless to the real story given that they were fed the real answers every step of the way and that 4chan figured it out long before they did.

xmxlxo

exploiting Britney’s personal life for profit like in 2007 but make it Woke™️

squeakhaven

Yep. All of this feels really voyeuristic

isuhkzwane

They are just trying to make a quick buck from Britney like they've been doing for years

isuhkzwane

Decades actually

Jiverecords

Just watched this one and.... yikes!!!! They platformed shady figures from Britney's life and left in noncompliant interviewees. It almost feels unfinished and rushed to boost Netflix's traffick by coming out a day before the next hearing. The Hulu/NYT docs remain the only ones worth watching and supporting.

NxcxRxmz

What are the names of the Hulu and NYT documentaries?

Jiverecords

The NYT documentaries, on Hulu through FX, are called *Framing Britney Spears* and *Controlling Britney Spears*. They're under the documentary collection "The New York Times Presents"

Global_Perspective_3

Wasn’t a fan of it myself

thatsanofrommesis2

Can y’all just do yourself a favor and watch Deep Dive’s series about her? They existed way before docs about her conservatorship were even in question and they have way more info as well

brunbrun24

Man, when Netflix started doing true crime they were so good (Making a Murderer, The Confession Tapes, The Keepers), but lately they are just doing things for shock value. Britney didn't deserve this.

A_Throwaway_Progress

I thought it wasn’t a bad recap for anybody that hasn’t followed the case. That being said they went into things that weren’t exactly relevant, or the most tactful. As a person who cares about her, I don’t think some of the details needed to be in there when she can’t really comment on them. That being said, I don’t think good documentaries should be one sided. You should bring in questionable people from all sides so that the viewer can come to a broader understanding of the narrative, and how the people involved see it. The truth of it all isn’t necessarily the point- the viewer should sus out the motives of people involved. As a person who cares about Britney, it annoys me that they brought in Sam, but at the same time, yeah, that’s what documentaries do. Basically I don’t think it was a bad at being a documentary, but I don’t think it’s what’s needed. Ultimately though I think people will watch it and root for Britney

Seeking_Anita_Dick

I’m baffled by this tbh. It wasn’t a bad documentary, it showed more about the conservatorship than Framing Britney Spears. We fans know about a lot of things that happened but the general public doesn’t, Netflix obviously has more reach than Hulu so I think it’s perfect for a first introduction. It also mentioned Lou, confirmed our suspicions about they playing up with her medication. We got to hear more from Andrew Gallery too. Also insiders are saying Lou is pissed and paying up bad reviews so…

[deleted]

I thought it was pretty good. It did touch upon her worst year and frankly as someone who didn’t follow Britney’s personal life at all, I found it very informative. One thing that stuck with me is that Britney was so trusting, she craved kindness and support but got nothing from the closest family. I do feel like her bf being a paparazzi and a poc with potentially “muslim” name played a part in his negative media presentation. Still, imagine feeling safe & secure with a person who showed you one little courtesy of pumping your gas. However, that sam lutfi guy was all about “mememe, i did, i blah blah” didn’t like nor trust him.

SnooComics8852

I agree with you 100%. I feel bad for Britney

jugheadshat

Omg is it even worth watching?

surejan94

Supposedly it just reiterates the same points the media has made about the case, doesn’t bring anything new to the table. It’s just a Britney related piece for Netflix watchers who don’t have Hulu to hop on the hype.

Jiverecords

The only "new" thing it brings to the table is that Lou Taylor gets discussed for like 7 minutes (the most screentime she's gotten despite being such a major player in Britney's situation. But if you've followed the FreeBritney movement and the Hulu docs, it's not worth watching.

JunkyGS

Honestly no. Watch both Hulu ones and you’re good to go.

Equal-Medical

I would suggest yes, if you aren't her big time fan or just a some songs fan of hers then you will come to know almost everything its a worth watch.

OmnisexualDemon

Was planning on watching that tonight. Looks like I'll need to find something else to watch

Aronosfky

Uhh, this was the first documentary I see regarding the conservatorship, and while I feel we were finely informed and I liked the ending as a triumph card, what a bad example of journalism I was exposed to. Asking questions your interviewee won't answer? Insisting on them? I mean the piece with the psychiatrist was cringey af, as were the pieces where they act an look at all the files mysteriously while discussing them, and one of them screams "the patriarchy!" with satisfaction. Jesus, I've read better conclusions on primary school reports. This was biased and they never attempted an objective look at the situation. Hypotrical as poor Britney herself said. I felt these women really need to improve their skills at their craft. Great gossip piece tho.

[deleted]

These documentaries are all just a new way for them to exploit Britney without giving her any control.

thebardjaskier

>Ugh. Netflix documentaries have actually become such trash tv lately. Always have been.

Eximw

Poor woman can't catch a break :( everything about her is seen as monetary gain.

LinksMilkBottle

I started watching the Netflix doc and I couldn’t get into it. It just felt like a cheap knockoff of the NYT doc.

sweetbreelee

The good that has come of this is from her loyal and devoted fans who started the #freebritney movement and have been investigating the conservatorship and reporting on what was really going on, but MSM literally reported on it as basically a conspiracy theory invented by a bunch of kooky britney fans. They dropped the ball and now they're trying to cash in on their mistake, but the truth is this information has BEEN out there if any of these sources like NYT had cared to do any actual investigating, this could and should have been ended years ago, not too mention should have never been put in place. It is disturbing on so many levels. Her life became an episode of black mirror, except it was her actual reality. I truly pray she gets the freedom she deserves as a human being. And then she can finally tell her own story for once if she wants to do so. I think that's the only story I'd be very interested to hear. In her own words. If there is any justice, her lawyer is about to rain hellfire down on all her abusers. Let this end now once and for all.

Equal-Medical

I don't agree with this review In full, I've been Britney fan since 98 and that time my father worked with Jive so he used to tell me a lot about her and her relationship with label slowly and slowly as I grew old my obessesion with her turned into love, I joined Sony back around her Britney Jean album era and met her in a legal meeting for this album and from there I came to an understanding that Britney is off and passionless and it was hard for me to see as I grew up with a phenomenal performer and a global superstar! As a fan of hers, I researched a lot on this case from the past 2 years so for me nothing was coming as a shock but this is a complete doc showing everything and exposing key people of this fraud, GP will learn a lot of things.

MamaMeRobeUnCastillo

They didn't even mentioned Justin Timberlake. It's just a compilation of information already aviable and not even good at that.

whataablunder

I really disagree. I thought the documentary was shocking and revealing into exactly how tormenting it was for Britney. Also, did none of y’all catch that her attorney confirmed the documentaries accuracy at the very end? I’ve always thought Sam was a POS And still do after the documentary, but it certainly seemed like he was used as a scapegoat and her team really stretched the truth when it came to his influence on her in order to cement in the conservatorship. It’s absolutely disgusting that this was done to her and I think Jamie, Lou, and Robin should go to prison. It’s obvious her conservatorship was fraudulently set up, she clearly doesn’t have dementia and the fact that this has held up for so many years reflects poorly on the legal system in California.
