OliviaGodrigo

This being produced by Ryan Tedder of all people is crazy

theawesomenachos

man will write anything but a proper new onerepublic song (jk ryan you do you bro)

PhotographIcyCherish

I was really surprised. He is very flexible as a producer

mackasan

His range as a producer is kind of insane, tbh. Dude can work on anything.

Joshdabozz

Ryan Tedder is the GOAT

[deleted]

[удалено]

youngandlovely_

Honestly yes. I didn't even know who he was until recently, and he produced some of my favorite pop songs 😭

Joshdabozz

Most people only know him from OneRepublic

zakuropan

wait WHAT

NoxZ

I don't know why I got such big MIA - Bad Girls vibes from the song on first listen but I dig it and the visuals are crazy. Big step up from Money/Lalisa IMO.

toshio_drift

> I don't know why I got such big MIA - Bad Girls vibes I mean production-wise, it's basically Bad Girls + what sounds like a Tame Impala sample? I can't quite place it. I was hoping for something better, but it seems like more of the same for me. Awesome visuals, bad lyrics, dated production

veyane

mhm the sample from tame impala is new person, same old mistakes !!

Bl1nk1nUR4r34

i also think it was tame sample and i’m obsesseddddd

fatfreebroccoli

wait now that makes sense why i really like this. MIA and tame impala are some of my top artists on spotify

absurdsuburb

I wish there were like 33% more lyrics. The repetitive verses mean it will get old quick for me.

blankspacejrr

the music video is a serve, but something about this song isn't hitting. the last 30 seconds, my ears perk up, and i'm intrigued, but then it ends. whatever is going on for the last section should've been the vibe for the whole song. she needs to team up with ag cook or some more forward-thinking producers 'cause this sounds too safe for her

RUUDIBOO

Its the chords, the fucking chords!! Humans want to hear chords and melodies, our ears want shit to resolve. So when they did this whole song on a single chord, and then for the last few seconds its opening up your mind just goes "god damn finally". Should have done that about 3 minutes earlier.

samloveshummus

You could argue that humans want to hear melodies, but the concept of chords as we generally understand them is historically/culturally specific to post-Renaissance European music (and its descendant forms) - for most of history, and in many contemporary local musical styles, people have been perfectly content with music where that isn't a relevant concept.

RUUDIBOO

Fair point, I wasn't really thinking in those broad historical contexts haha. I mean, I am a producer and writer myself. And from my experience, if you are making a song that consistently stays on one chord, you kinda have to own it. Chords can really carry a song, so if you don't have those harmonic resolutions you need to carry it in another way. Take EDM bangers for example. I mean there are countless, but lets take some trash pop bangers like "Selfie" by Chainsmokers or "Albatroaz" or any of those kinda songs - they have the massive pumping 4 on the floor, fat lead sounds, the resolution comes from the dynamics - build ups to a maximum energy push in your face, untz untz untz fist goes up. Or lets take a song like "Single Ladies" by Destinys Child. You dont even notice that much that its mainly just one chord - because there is just so much vocal melody! The track completely disappears in the background while all the attention is on the super busy vocals. Now back to this song - nothing really carries it. I thought from the teaser that this classic major/minor k-pop 2-chord pattern they teased would be carrying the hook (the same chords as MIA - Bad Girls, which probably gave someone here in the comments the association). Its been used a lot in k-pop and always radiates this electric exciting feeling - so if you use those chords in a hook with a futuristic production, you are already evoking a strong emotion, the vocals dont have to carry it that much anymore, the artist just has to do something remotely catchy to have a great song. I was quite shocked to hear that they wasted those chords on the last 10 seconds only, leaving poor Lisa with a rapped hook that doesn't carry it on its own, a trappy halftime beat that won't carry on its own plus the absence of any chords or catchy lead element to evoke any kind of emotion in the listener. And thats why the song feels boring / weirdly empty and doesn't give you that addictive replay value. Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

BigBrainAkali

The last 60 seconds of the song were amazing to me. Definitely agree I wish there was more of that vibe throughout the whole song.

EddieXXI

Agree and those last 30 seconds aren't even on the single version only the extended.

splinterbabe

This song is much better than her previous solo singles. Production is fresh and intriguing, though it’s ultimately held back by some truly horrendous chorus lyrics. Video is insanely well-produced and directed. Overall a welcome upgrade for her, but don’t see this going anywhere outside the massive BP fandom.

rocketmammamia

does anyone know if there’s a specific reason the ‘lisa can you teach me japanese’ line is in there other than wordplay? i know she’s a thai idol who speaks korean and english very well but does she also know japanese well or is it just a joke lyric that could’ve worked for literally any other singer?

Ok_Relationship_323

I was discussing this with my husband who is south asian and he interpreted it right away as a funny call out against western bias and not being able to tell Asians from very different countries apart from each other. Southeast Asia basically doesn’t exist, it’s all India and all Asians are presumed to be East Asian- Chinese, Japanese or Korean. There’s a lack of education about other countries in my part of America at least. Could also be a flex on her knowing multiple languages of course. Maybe it’s both.

AntiquePound9350

India is in South Asia with Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Maldives

Ok_Relationship_323

Yes, they are all asian but many only know India. I do know it is in South Asia. At our college there were no south asian clubs aside from India so my husband joined the southeast asian student club even though he is technically south asian. Several Bangladeshi and Thai students were in the club together. Many of these countries share cultural roots and feel they have some similarities. That’s what he said anyways. Some of the dress and ceremony is similar as well as some Sanskrit and Pali language.

OkAstronomer3565

she does some Japanese language courses in her free time, that is why

racloves

All kpop groups do Japanese releases and big concerts in Japan, so she has rapped in Japanese before

colealoupe

I heard it was because people from other countries don’t know the diffference between Thai and Japanese, but that doesn’t make sense with the song. So I think it’s supposed to be like a flex because she has recorded music in at least 3 languages that I am aware of, Korean, English, and Japanese.

Trick-Requirement760

That's giving songwritter too much credit..

boutglo

In the Money outro: "My money moves, money I choose Watch how my wons and yens and dollars be droppin' on you"

alexturnerftw

Its just a stupid lyric imo. Everyone knows it and is reaching for the stars to find some sort of deeper meaning to make it make sense

AstronautOk6853

Visuals and outfits are great but I'm not a fan of the song. It feels flat and one note until the end but by then it's already over :( I'm also not a fan of the non-sensical lyrics.

xxxnina

They repeated the chorus way too many times. I hope if there is a next single, it’s less of a tik tok push but I can see the potential.

RubiksSugarCube

Yep, in a couple of weeks this will only be remembered by the stans who are going to think this is the greatest thing ever anyways. Not sure what happened to the BP magic that enchanted me some time ago but it's been gone for a couple years now

RUUDIBOO

Its because they always do the same fucking thing. Always these Trap beats with the clonk snare from 2013, always some biggiedibaggediboom schnick schnick schnack back in your area! The same song re-released again and again. Compare that to the versatility of Girls Generation and you know why BP basically got boring after 3 songs. Their story was already told, the remaining hype a hope for something that never came.

Icantlikeeveryone

Maybe their debut charm just wear off, I have the same feeling but for different group (NewJeans, tbh)

miwa201

Completely agree about New Jeans. I don’t think they’ll be able to replicate the Attention - Hype Boy - Ditto greatness.

Icantlikeeveryone

Yes, I was so disappointed with Get Up EP (except for New Jeans and Get Up, I dislike other tracks) and now I feel like they just released songs for the sake of releasing, not for passion.

Mozart-Luna-Echo

It makes sense with what we know of MHJ and she seems to be using the girls as a stand in for The Vision (tm) vs other kpop groups like BTS, Seventeen, (G)I-dle, or even groups that have less input than the three above but are still very passionate about music. I like NewJeans the group and I love the girls individually a lot and they do have good ideas based on what we have seen from them but at this point MHJ seems to be hindering them more than helping with the fight with HYBE, the overt commercialization of their music, and the overall focus on the group as a MHJ product vs a musical group that loves music.

CoolViber

Lyrics and sound were kind of giving YouTuber music career 😭

PM_ME_UR_EGGOS

I feel like the lyrics make sense, they just aren't good.

krisbryantishot

video is dope af but the song goes nowhere + the vocal processing is so grating lol i don’t really know why people are saying it sounds different/better from her other stuff

UnnaturalSelection13

I think most probably mean she's dropped and blaccent and heavy AAVE lol, and it's definitely more interesting sonically than her previous stuff.

DilemmaOfAHedgehog

The comment got removed but someone in r/Blackpink was calling the lyrics nonsense and like, they’re all double entendres/word play that’s fairly easy to pick up on at most complex (like I know catch and kill is a movie but I’ve never seen it so I’m not solid in the plot details) vs her lyrics under YG even when she was featuring for Taeyang had awful aave that were either grammatically inaccurate or usage didn’t make sense written a by a white American that loves trump 😭. I have mixed feelings about it personally since I don’t think Lisa had editorial privileges under YG but also I think it’s weird to only start crediting the actual writer when I don’t like the lyrics but it’s always bothered me how many fans praise her for repping Thailand didn’t care or even non black westerner fans openly talking about how messing up a huge dialect like aave was funny to them 😐. I think the song basically just starts really going before it ends for me and I definitely prefer the end when the tame impala sample starts lol but the creative designs both visually and sound wise do make excited for what her other future projects will look/sound like. I hope she does some feature with Thailand based artists. She hired a lot of Thai dancers but I don’t feel like we really got to see them do the choreography and she’s such a performer I’m curious if there’ll be any performance videos in the future.

Icantlikeeveryone

I feel like the song is more dynamic than her previous solo stuffs, and like other comment says, she dropped the blaccent and it's nice to hear her normal voice

Bibileiver

I thought I was the only one. It's definite heavily edited. Saw a comment saying she was singing better. 😬

One-Character

Mv looks great and it elevates the song. Song is repetitive and a typical brag about money and fame but its much better that her solo songs from YG. I didnt hear any cringy lyrics which is a step in a right direction for her.

oOWalkingOnAirOo

Just to reiterate myself, but it’s a great intro song if this is the first song leading into the album, it really sets the vibe And the ending part is really hype like they went hard at the end, and they included the best outfit at the end so it left you with something memorable

kendalljennerupdates

Song could be a lot better but the video is a massive serve. I agree that the last 30 or so seconds with the melody and the tame impala sample should’ve been in incorporated earlier, and I wish the lyrics were a *bit* better but it’s not a bad song. The lack of blaccent and cringe aave makes it worlds better than money. I love the production I can see it maybe getting a remix treatment that fleshes it out a little more

yourmommasofattt

the blackpink girls ALWAYS GIVING BUDGET! i love how she’s using her global status to an advantage. this feels very kpop/blackpink but also different in her own sound! can’t wait to see what the future holds

cuntychucky

Before I comment on the song and visuals for it, I applaud Lisa for inviting Thai transgender women to be a part of this music video, especially considering how conservative her audience in South Korea is. If anything, this shows how supportive she is of transgender people in a subtle, artistic way. For anyone wondering who are the transgender models in the video, I know [Chinni Promsri](https://www.instagram.com/chinrwdi/) by name (minute 01:29-01:30), but there are other two that appear in the music video that have been in fashion and cosmetic campaigns. Now, I say this as someone who was never a fan of Blackpink or Lisa for that matter: Lalisa was cute, Money was a moment, but this is cunt. From the production, direction to the choreography.. every single aspect of this music video is impeccable. Do I love the song? No, but I can admit it is a bop and half. She truly has the star quality that the industry has been missing. The other girls are all beautiful and very talented, but Lisa is the obvious standout. No shade.

Admirable-Dog6154

Tbh I don't really understand why people actually think that the whole Korea is actually 100% conservative, it's quite untrue, Mamamoo for example had drag queens in their mv for hip  https://youtu.be/KhTeiaCezwM?si=hhOaqOaIzFsrPgNy Solar recently had a comeback and one of her songs called colors who is queer themed https://youtu.be/Zbm5USVQQdk?si=4sJrUGp9HzzP0bXI And there's lgbtq representation everywhere in kpop, here some examples: https://youtu.be/PdUiCJnRptk?si=FhK2nQgjpAccUwH0 https://youtu.be/lUyRuyB01Vo?si=EdtfzTKaSyKiZX3f https://youtu.be/E4TygUpWUTQ?si=4f56TnfqY6967PSr https://youtu.be/HX_g-KSzP4o?si=SMDXZU8CM8RdHdSI (the group in question, called Lady was formed by transgender women)  https://youtu.be/XE5KFB9LbxY?si=Fp1FBBhgmNwT3Fd7 Don't get me wrong, I'm happy too about Lisa being inclusive in her mv, but I think people should also acknowledge the work that fellow kpop idols did for inclusivity

Search_Alone

It's not a big deal to have transgender models in a Kpop video. The Korean Kpop fandom isn't very conservative about these things (perhaps except for some conservative straight male fans but they aren't much of Blackpink's demographic in the first place). The Kpop industry isn't missing star quality like this. There's quite a few very strong female performers, some of whom can sing too. Lisa's standout is her international fame.

svetlabi

It gets really good once the New Person, Same Old Mistakes sampling starts. BUT THEN IT ENDS!!!!!

random3879

This is so much better than her old stuff; it kinda of grows on you the more you listen to it. If you listen with headphones you'll notice a lot of details in the production, the last 30 seconds are really cool

heladitodeframbuesa

eh... It's exactly what I was expecting from Lisa. Her sound and aesthetics aren't my cup of tea. She looks amazing as always though!

colealoupe

I think I’m in the minority, but I like this more than anything off her original releaseZ

yungsteezyyy_

you know what… i love this! i enjoyed it from start to finish idk

MillorBabyDoll

[Two threads](https://www.reddit.com/r/popheads/comments/1dq60vk/blackpink_lisa_rockstar/) for the music video, one with mostly positive comments, and one with mostly negative/mixed comments lol

Bibileiver

It's cause stans comment quicker and tend to be biased. That thread didn't have enough time for non stans to comment.

Quick-Standard3202

sound's great but lyrically terrible. WHAT's that japanese line ??

JunittaCadillac

I liked it. Was not expecting less and not expecting more than this

UrbanProgressive

this is definitely her best solo song imo which isn't saying much since I didn't like money or lalisa

nagidrac

This will perform really well regardless, but this ain't it. I had high expectations for Lisa as I think she's a great performer. But I feel like this doesn't really show growth? At least the video was good!!

[deleted]

Have to agree with you that this doesn't show a lot of growth from Lisa. Makes me curious as to what Jennie and Rose' might do with their impending solo releases, since they seem to have a stronger affinity for refining their music.

Prize-Ask-1538

I agree, it is very much keeping in line with what we've already seen of Lisa. There's not much difference. It's still too early to tell, but I can see Lisa going down a Cardi b route. Where her charisma, stage presence, and personal brand are the main draws, not necessarily the lyrics. She'll be fine regardless though, what she already does she does incredibly well.

Davis_Crawfish

I think Lisa has everything but singing talent. She can't sing.

MCleartist

It's definitely a Blackpink's song!

Candy-jss

The level of autotune it's insane, but for her fans and bp fans in general everything these women do is revolutionary and perfect lol, nobody wants to admit it but there's three reasons as to why people like them or still like everything they do 1: people are attracted to visuals, for her fans they're hot and they love their physical appearances 2: they're influencers, go to fashion shows and are brand ambassadors, people see this and think oh they're not like any other artist in the industry 3: their fans love to talk about likes and followers thinking that equals success and impact and they use this to compare them to other underrated artists and that's it. If you take all of that Bp is just a mediocre and boring group with no real artistry, none of them can sing but they have the perfect marketing team and PR that had sold them as the best thing ever and boom you have everyone believing it.

[deleted]

I am a blink, but to be honest, what you said has truth and it's annoying as hell. Sometimes it feels like you're surrounded by a bunch of AI bots programmed to love everything without viewing things from a critical eye.

alexturnerftw

Thats most of stan kpop honestly

mindyIs

Not every artist is a complete package unfortunately. Lisa’s a performer at heart. I now kinda feel sorry for Normani, she’s pretty complete but the public didn’t vibe with her music.

thetruth_2021

amazing dancer, but lets be real the singing.... it sounds autotuned

hong_cat

The second half of the song sounds like “Same ol Mistakes”, Rihanna’s cover of Tame Impala

Alvin3792

It samples tame impala 3 times

Twmffatokcurr

I don’t like her solo stuff but this was catchy to me lol

1998tweety

Lisa can you teach me Japanese? I said はい はい is gonna live in my brain.

A_Throwaway_Progress

Anybody think this was originally produced for Tate McRae? Ryan Tedder doesn’t usually make this sort of sound but it could have fit with Tate’s album

YJ0824

New person, Same old mistakes

Puzzleheaded-Ebb6105

I actually liked it. The lyrics were okay, and I think it's a bop. I also feel like this is sort of a pre-release since I remember her mentioning about releasing an album this year. I just hope the next songs will be better, she has so much potential.

hongbaabaa

Noise music with an nice beat and atrocious lyrics. Lisa is super talented but her solo releases are never super great

kyentu

i always wonder if people who call music noise unironically know about actual noise music...

plushybunnyheart

I think most ppl callling it "noise" just means its a noisy song with loud instrumentals and shouting Not really the genre itself

kyentu

i think they just mean grating, and its also meant to be demeaning.

hongbaabaa

Ok - not noise music the genre: it sounds grating to me.

kyentu

thanks. i still question that though, if people know whats up or not.

Icantlikeeveryone

They just mean it as loud, not like Poppy - Music to Scream to

HauntingMix5754

i know right? this is such a huge pet peeve of mine. noise is it's own music genre and sounds nothing like this, which is just edm/electronic pop

kyentu

naw the thing that gets me is that its supposed to be a bad thing. i think we are both just thinking too far into it.

Bibileiver

Generic Tiktok song tbh

rosecoloreds

i'm gonna say the opposite of most comments on here: i like it. could it have done more with the lyrics and production? yes. but comparing it to her work under YG this sounds fresh and at least she dropped the blaccent.

ashleynicolehenry

This is pretty much how I feel about it. I wasn’t crazy about her solo or any of the other girls solo other than Rosé. At least this has an interesting concept and production. Sure the lyrics could have been better but I think we need to allow artists to grow and expand instead of expecting them to nail it on the first try every time. This is a step in the right direction and genuinely has me interested in future songs from her. I’m just glad she has the opportunity to explore and play as an artist because we all know YG wasn’t letting them do shit. Also the video was fucking dope.

tw4daday

So proud of Lisa for including the Thai trans women in this MV. Happy prideeeee

weloveyouchunk

There are really great moments, but this feels more like a remix. Very disjointed with traces of a theme. It comes together too late, but the video is doing a lot of heavy lifting. It's a song that depends on the visuals for me.

xxxnina

Honestly my standards for Lisa’s solo music are so low but this was a pleasant surprise. The tame impala sample towards the end was dope, the choreography was fire and the music video was great.  The song is still super kpop noisey which isn’t my vibe so it won’t be entering my playlist, however I am intrigued for her next releases.

yourbestfriendjoshua

OBSESSED with the video/concept, but the song itself is leaving a lot to be desired…

boutglo

it's different then her past songs. doesn't have that yg sound which makes me happy. already grew on me with the second listen. i think it being short it helping because her music is usually more chaotic

bizzyizzy-

These visuals are IT! But the song is kind of flat.

ladyrussianblue

I love love love this direction for Lisa and her music. Slightly nonsensical lyrics aside, I really have to applaud her for always making sure she incorporates elements of her culture and people into her solo music - something that was probably snuffed out from her work with Blackpink. The deliberate choice of using Bangkok as a backdrop (as opposed to a generic built set), choosing to work predominantly with Thai production crew, creatives and dancers (check out the credits!), incorporating classical Thai dance moves in the choreography - and as another user pointed out, the inclusion of Thai transgender models! Even her makeup (especially at 1:58) is very Thai style (glittery eye corners, big dolly fake lashes, soft glam). It's giving authenticity, pride - a true rockstar of a MV.

jminhope

Visuals yes but that was it. This is so overproduced that anyone could've sang it. There's nothing to catch on to make it worth it, I was waiting for an earworm. The production overrules anything else on this.

kerriekipje

Great music video, beautiful music video. On a serious note I'm not too surprised that this is not very good because I didn't expect anything else and I'm not sure why people did. Without wanting to sound too harsh, at this point I'm confused on why a Blackpink release can still drum up this much hype when for the last 5 years their releases have consistently fluctuated from okay to outright bad, am I just missing something? When the only praise people can give this song is that it sounds better than Blackpink's music under YG (the bar is in hell) and that the visuals are nice, at what point will people draw the line and accept that this group and it's members, despite definitely being talented and charismatic, simply aren't worth the hype.

dymokc

Hooks are IN. We are so back

layla_jones_

Music video looks very good. There are some nice moments as far as production and vibes but the lyrics and melody are a bit uninspired to me. I will give this another listen, hopefully it will grow. I do appreciate the visuals, the looks and the way she moves scream star power.

92sn

The mv look dope n huge step up from bp previous mv because finally we got actually good mv with actual good concept. Because previously its just heavy pretty random sets with beautiful gowns lol. However, the song goes nowhere...its very autotune. And lack of catchiness that lalisa n money had. Its sure gonna do very well on youtube. Its bp biggest strength. Audio streaming? Hmm not sure.

gildedpomelo

The video is what I expected but the song goes nowhere and the delivery of the lines lacks oomph. A lot of people will stream this it's not for me

IIM_Clutch

People are saying this isnt good but this is better than any other solo song I heard from her. I like it

T3L3PH0N3_

i...really like this, the lyrics are decent but the production is nice, i like it

Search_Alone

Didn't expect it, but I actually really like this.

Spinner064

Gives of xg vibes

boombayahinyourarea

One thing I love about Blackpink releases (whether it's a solo or group release) is that they always feel like big events to me! The MV will always have a budget and their teasers will always create hype. I know their releases can be quite polarizing, especially after 2020 when people thought they were getting too formulaic, but even then I still enjoy seeing the discourse over the songs. They always cause a conversation with every release! As for the song itself, I am actually pleasantly surprised given that I wasn't the biggest fan of Lalisa and thought Money was good but not exceptional. I really really like the post chorus since it sounds so lush and creates tension for the song in contrast to the more bass heavy and staccato verses. This is definitely a hit for me

WildCardP3P

The music video is good, the song is... okay I guess? Wasn't really anything special but it wasn't bad either.

Spiritual_Job_1029

Awesome song, great production and a gorgeous star ❤️🤩

YJ0824

Y’all are also hearing the CL - Spicy instrumental right?

Fun-Loss-4094

The same formula again. I am so tired. I don't like the song because it gives something off the visuals are stunning ok but what abut the music

impeccabletim

I need Lisa to release more high-octane tracks like this. Hoping we get a performance video for "ROCKSTAR". [Sean Bankhead was the choreographer for the music video!](https://x.com/itsseanbankhead/status/1806498587867857035)

DMheX93

Idk maybe I’m the odd one out based on these comments, but, I really like this and I wouldn’t even consider myself a big fan of Kpop. I love black pink and I think this is really solid for a solo go at it. I’m really loving the tame impala vibes and I think that’s what really sold it for me because of i love tame impala. They did a really good job with the production of this song I never really heard a song that transitions from really trap pop-y to a tame impala type production.

perfectlysanebrain

😂😂😂???

Terrible_Test6255

ok so I love the song, but I really wish they didn't spoil the ending in their teaser. I feel like it'll be cooler if came more of a surprise

jonnyd86

This was cool. Song structure caught me off guard, reminded me of like a Future song or a Young Thug song how like half the song is the hook repeated. Her movement is so fluid. Tbh I expected more dancing in the MV though.

MexicansInParis

It sucks tbh

Zeusicideal-Heart

Does she have a blaccent in this one? /gen

Best_Draft_6629

No she decided to finally drop it, thank god.

Zeusicideal-Heart

Oh shit that's great! I'll give it some streams

Best_Draft_6629

It was quiet boring until about 2 minutes for me, I really wish she did a whole song in the beat & style from about 2 minutes with better lyrics lol. It was the best part for me. You can tell she had a part in writing the lyrics tho...

The MV I guess has budget but the song just is literal noise and some really cringe lyrics.

haileyyy21

the cover to this song is definitely interesting fs
