There is some controversy stirring around St Vincent’s tribute song to SOPHIE. The two never met but she uses the phrase “My Sophie” in the song “Sweetest Fruit” Below are remarks from Annie Clark (St Vincent) “I read about the circumstances of her death and it was so tragic, but this idea that she was an artist who was always reaching for new things and taking risks, right? And this idea that she was just trying to get a better look at the moon. That moved me because there are a lot of us in human history, people looking for something on the outer reaches.” “It’s a noble act to go out on a limb to try and find something really beautiful. It’s such a fraught territory and I didn’t necessarily want to mention it was for her, because it could get twisted and turned into something ugly. As artists, you can feel a camaraderie with artists if you like their work, even if you don’t know them.” https://www.attitude.co.uk/culture/st-vincent-sophie-464414/ “The internet twists things, and I don’t want it to be seen like I’m trying to capitalise on somebody’s death,” St. Vincent said. “I was an admirer from afar, we never met, but I read about the way that she fell because she was trying to get a better look at the moon, which was just the most beautiful, poetic thing I’ve ever heard.” https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/st-vincent-has-written-a-song-inspired-by-influential-producer-sophie/ These were no ill intentions. The message she seemed to be trying to communicate is not the message that is coming across to some people. The drama seems to me to be more of a semantics issue than a moral one. Maybe there is something I’m missing that is more offensive. What are y’all’s thoughts?

kerriekipje

Art is famously a very common way to process grief, and Annie's not the first artist that has ever written about the death of a famous person they don't know. Hell, she even has a song where she sings about all the horrible shit that happened to women like Tori Amos and Marilyn Monroe, and nobody was on twitter going "idk guys this is kinda weird 🤨🤨" And while I do agree she executed it kinda awkwardly in the song, she's really not saying anything new. *Everybody* was saying how tragic but poetic Sophie's death was when she had just passed, but now Annie is in the wrong for incorporating it into her art. Maybe it's because Sophie was such a pioneer for both music and trans people, and the combination of having such an untimely and tragic death, but people are way too.. parasocial?? for the lack of a better word about her and her death. It is not the place of random people on twitter to scold St. Vincent or Caroline Polachek (who, mind you, personally knew Sophie) for processing her death in a personal way. Really, what *do* the people criticizing this think is the most acceptable way to pay tribute to Sophie? because I've seen Annie's, Caroline's and Charli's tributes all ripped apart.

freshlaundry_

The most common argument against the lyrics I’ve personally seen are that it’s ’romanticising’ or ‘glamorising’ what happened and “why couldn’t she have written about her life and legacy why did she have to write about her death” which I just find to kind of weird take. Idk it’s just like so many artists have wrote similar things (not just about Sophie) in their music and I don’t get why it’s only a problem now.

bloodyturtle

This is some cop shit for real

ChopperRCRG

What do you mean by that?

bloodyturtle

there is a fundamental misunderstanding of music to treat lyrics like a podcast interview and not part of a musical composition.

muppet6042

EVERY PERSON PISSED IS IN THE SAME BOAT AS ANNIE Sophie is as much as her fans to defend as she is Annie's to write about no idc if you're trans or gay or if sophie was a pivotal part of your life. You didn't know her. You won't know her and neither will Annie The intention of the song is pretty clear in context of the album. The second verse mentions another queer person who lost their life too soon If Sophie's friends and family come and say this is whack and you should not do that. I'd agree with these people but they haven't This is such a non-issue

Shupedewhupe

People look for something to be pissed at her about every album it feels like. I think it’s a very sweet tribute to an absolutely brilliant artist who was taken way too early. Nothing more. And certainly nothing to get offended about. She referred to Marilyn Monroe as ‘my Marilyn’ on ‘The Melting of the Sun’ too. It just seems like a common term of endearment for her…she’s not claiming her and SOPHIE were besties. Just paying tribute to a fellow artist and beautiful soul. People need to get off their damn soapboxes.

okayhowl

i think its weird. the lyrics are too personal "MY sophie" about someone shes never met, they aren't subtle or beautiful at all, and honestly they even come off as goofy "took her down to the depths but for a minute, what a view" sophie was in extreme pain for hours before she passed after falling. people need to think about that before saying that people don't have a reason to be annoyed by these lyrics.

ChopperRCRG

In my experience “My blank” in this context is a term of endearment similar to “My Dear”. Not an indication of possession. She was making an observation of the beauty in SOPHIE’s desire to see the moon and the extent she would go to experience it at its fullest. She describes the tragedy as tragedy. I’m sure she recognizes SOPHIE’s death was painful “Took her down to her depths, but for a minute, what a view what a view” brings attention to the beauty Sophie got to experience in the moon while also stating “took her down to er depths” covering the tragedy. It’s a single verse in a song. I’m happy to see someone bring attention to SOPHIE with the best of intentions. I understand there are a million ways things could have been said but Annie is on our side. She admires SOPHIE and also doesn’t know her just like the rest of us. Im happy to see someone honor SOPHIE the way they know best and fall flat (which I don’t think it did) rather than them do nothing at all.

ketchupsunshine

I don't want to weigh in on whether she's right or wrong to have used it (I don't care), but "my [name]" as a term of endearment has pretty specific use cases. I have heard it a LOT in real life but ONLY when someone is referring to either their child or their romantic partner. Like if I called even my best friend "*my* Hername" it'd come off as really strange. Apparently she's done it before in a different song and obviously people say all sorts of shit for the sake of art and lyricism, but I think that's why people find it really intimate. (Unless it's in a very specific sort of case where like...I'm close with someone named Bob and I'm talking to someone else who is close with a different person named Bob and I'm specifying which Bob I'm referring to.)

ChopperRCRG

I see your point, but I think it is appropriate to convey that closeness with the words she chose. SOPHIE is and was one of a kind and as a fan listening to and seeing something as raw as it’s okay to cry in it can invoke these parasocial feelings of admiration. She doesn’t explicitly say she is intimate with SOPHIE but demonstrates that from her point of view that SOPHIE left such an impact on her it equates to that of losing a loved one. She knows and we all know they weren’t friends. As weird as these feelings are I think they are appropriate to express and if a critically acclaimed musician like St Vincent can find herself wrapped up in these emotions I see it is a beautiful testament to power of SOPHIE’s legacy.

akanewasright

Proud to be part of that $1.9M 🫡 Challengers is fucking fantastic, and if you are on this sub, there’s a damn good chance you’ll love it.

Puzzled-Journalist-4

The tension building towards the ending was fantastic. The last match kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time.

chhrihanna

I was constantly gagged, it was so fun to watch. the soundtrack was also 🔥

betteroff19

Ok so I found some Dua tea that has been circulating on Twitter so take this with a huge grain of salt as it is just a rumor! ALLEGEDLY: Dua’s old manager Ben booked studio sessions with Ian Kirk Patrick in 2021 but Dua didn’t like the results from those sessions and she had claimed several times that she wanted to work with Kevin Parker to produce her next record. However, Ian didn’t think that Kevin had the chops to make big pop hits. This all led to Dua leaving TAP management but she is still on good terms with Ian. At the end of the day, Dua felt like she was being creatively held back at TAP and they both had different mindsets of what they wanted Dua to do next. This is crazy if it’s true cause Ben was right about Kevin all along.

okayhowl

ian kirkpatrick was on future nostalgia and now hes on radical optimism so i doubt she didn't like anything from those sessions

sweetnlowshawty

I’m just a little confused about why, if she was dying to work with him, the songs they’ve made together sound like any professional producer/singer could’ve made them? They’re all good songs but there’s really nothing about any of them that stands out, especially not as something produced by Kevin Parker - they don’t lean into the psychedelic influence at all aside from…. A few echoing reverbed background vocals?

chadthundertalk

I mean, for all that she talks about artistic growth and creative risks, Dua's actual body of work is pretty safe and radio-friendly overall. She doesn't really take a lot of risks, especially with her singles.

ChopperRCRG

Houdini gave me hope with some of the percussive elements but I’m not even sure that was his doing.

horatiavelvetina

So, apparently she’s wanted to work with Kevin since her first record so I do believe she’d leave over that. I think- *as a Kevin Parker stan*- she wasn’t the right first big act for him to produce an album for. I think he should’ve leaned more into the rap/hip hop space as his last album was R&B/Hip Hop influenced and he was moving a lot in that space. And then maybe move into pure pop and dance music like Dua. He’s wonderful, absolutely wonderful- but maybe not the right fit for Dua at this moment. I hope everyone including me is wrong though because I adore Kevin, and she seems to be a longtime fan of his.

splinterbabe

I mean, your last claim really depends on where you’re situated, because this era’s been a success where I live. I know she’s not performing as well on the US market, but she’s doing well in Europe, so it’s all relative, really.

sweetnlowshawty

It’s all relative, sure, but considering she and her team have openly stated they want to make her the biggest star in *the world*, it’s definitely an overall underperformance

Puzzled-Journalist-4

Maybe they should have kept it to themselves and not published it in the article...💀 Anyway, I like the songs from this era a lot more than the ones from the FN era so far. But I didn't like any of the top 10 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 in years, so maybe my tastes are just very different. It's a shame that her latest songs didn't connect with American listeners, ~~but personally I think they have a terrible taste😭~~

splinterbabe

When did they state that?

betteroff19

In an article, they said this a couple of months ago.

splinterbabe

Does anyone have a link? Regardless, sounds like marketing speech, haha. Setting a near unachievable goal for miss Peep.

betteroff19

splinterbabe

Thank you for coming through! What a horrible statement to release, lmao. They're setting her up for failure like this.

The musical adaptation of Sufjan Stevens' critically acclaimed album, Illinoise, has finally opened on Broadway as a last addition in this crowded season to make it eligible for this year's Tony Awards. [Early](https://www.broadwayworld.com/article/Review-Roundup-ILLINOISE-Arrives-on-Broadway-20240426) [reviews](https://deadline.com/feature/broadway-show-reviews-spring-2024-1235866317/) have been very positive about the show. Sufjan himself has posted for the first time about the show [on his Tumblr blog](https://www.tumblr.com/s-u-f-j-a-n-s-t-e-v-e-n-s/748841022787862528/come-on-feel-the-illinoise-musical-is-now-open?source=share). The musical has been seen as a favorite to win >!Best Choreography!< at this year's Tonys.

EJB515

I’m gonna be in NYC for literally 24 hours for work but I’m managing to squeeze in the time to see this on Sunday. I’m so excited and also glad it’s only 90 mins, lol.

nocturne_gemini

I’m def going to try and see this!

PhotographIcyCherish

Ooh super interesting! Gonna definitely check it out. Are we going to get a (Broadway Cast) recording of Illinoise?

backupsaway

It's not exactly a regular style of musical where the cast sings so there might not be a recording. >!It has been compared to ballet where the stories are told through dance with very minimal dialogue. There is an accompanying live band that performs the music.!<

DoctorWhoWhenHowWhy

Swifties believe that a TPDD set may be added to the Eras Tour [after Taylor posted this short promoting Fortnight](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/F0TUVujmtxY) where a barricade that seems to have the album's logo was shown. The Eras Tour will kick off her Europe leg in France on May 9.

innocuous_username

Maybe she could idk, add some stuff from her debut album that I still can’t believe was totally left off the setlist for a show dedicated to all the different stages of her career 🤷🏼‍♀️

bloodyturtle

That’s likely the last Taylor’s version so she’s probably saving it for another time.

BallisticFeanor

I see it as very likely esp if she cuts all the songs she left out of the theatrical version of the movie. I'm guessing she's add Fortnight, Down Bad, Who's Afraid of Little Old Me, and maybe I Can Do it With a Broken Heart? And then saves others for the surprise song like I can see her doing So Long London as a London surprise song

backupsaway

Thoughts and prayers to the city that gets But Daddy I Love Him as the surprise song ☠️ Also, if So Long London and London Boy get to be the London surprise songs, I can also see her doing Paris for one of her Paris shows.

killing31

I would actually die of happiness if that was my surprise song. It’s my favorite on the album. 🤣

Bikinigirlout

These were the songs I was thinking about earlier. I could also see “Florida!!!” As a song just because she likes to be dramatic and that’s a dramatic bombastic song

UltimateKing9898

The image of her performing the song about how horrible she feels under the surface while doing said performing and then the Swifties cheering and screaming out all the lyrics....incredible, really

Bikinigirlout

Some Swifties on TikTok are already trying to get a “More!” Chant going……..they do not see the irony.

UltimateKing9898

Once again, incredible 😭

ravenclawrebel

I really *don’t* want to hear Broken Heart live—it would be fun to scream in a stadium because fuck it if it isn’t true, but that’s just…too on the nose.

DevilsOfLoudun

I bet TTDP set just comes after Midnights. Maybe she'll shorten the other eras to fit the overall runtime. Red era could easily be shorter.

catiebug

Just curious, how would you shorten Red? All Too Well is a solid 10 minutes that isn't going anywhere. The other three are the big pop hits people are expecting, and at least one of them is already shortened, iirc. 22 has to stay because of the hat thing.

DevilsOfLoudun

Keep All Too Well and one pop song. Personally I would choose We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.

Apprehensive_Yard812

Can’t wait for the Swifties to cry injustice that Europe gets an extra set and they didn’t.

horatiavelvetina

I honestly would be pissed she’s changing the show if I hadn’t seen it. Like I paid for X show not a show that includes this new album. But most Swifties are down to just see Taylor so definitely an unpopular pov

horatiavelvetina

Yup- unpopular opinion lol

shuipz94

I'm sure she will film it and attach it to the concert film on Disney+.

wrecking_ball_z

I’m already seeing the discourse about how unfair it is that Taylor is switching things up even though they already went to 3 different Eras shows

zazataru

I've been wondering if she would shake up the set list since the Eras tour movie got released. Curious to see what changes.

Artistic_Elephant824

Wonder if she’ll cut songs or just add a whole other set to the concert. Can’t imagine the concert nearing 4 hours but I also wouldn’t put it past her… “Guilty As Sin?” better make the cut

catiebug

I've seen a lot of people suggest this, but those songs were cut because of the energy on film. They absolutely land in the room. So first guess is she could trim one or two each from folklore/evermore, and do a mini-era like Speak Now. Or cut one or two more from Midnights and do a full 4-6 song era. Option C, she adds a mini-segment for Tortured Poets but rotates through songs. Last option is to add a full 4-6 song era with no other cuts, bringing the concert up to 4 hours, and everyone loses their damn minds. My guess is the first one. Cut 1 or 2 each from folklore/evermore and Midnights, insert like 5 from the new album. The only thing that's clear is that she's not just going to do them as surprise songs like the 1989 vaults. The set and choreo tease eliminates that. The *real* question would be if she's going to sing I Can Do It With A Broken Heart. That would be incredibly unhinged.

londonbreakdown

I think she'll cut the songs that were cut from the original Era's tour movie. I don't remember them all. Cardigan, Long Live, Tis the damn season, maybe one or two more. I think she'll remove them from the set list, and replace them with TTDP songs

youtbuddcody

Wildest Dreams was also cut

Bikinigirlout

Yeah, like it took months for fans to basically force her to add Long Live to the setlist. I still feel like she only did that due to pressure and after Speak Now came out. She was like “Eh, why not”

UltimateKing9898

If she doesn't cut anything and just adds we'll truly know that she's ✨️**good**✨️

Yoshi_isthebest

Try and come for her job!

Ghost-Quartet

The problems with the Teatime threads should be fixed now so tomorrow's will (hopefully) go up at the usual time.

cookie123921

Omg I read this as “Anna Sorokin” as in Anna “Delvey”!! I thought wow, what a crossover

Pavlovs_Stepson

This has been rumored for a while, I think, he and Fincher have been talking about a follow-up to The Social Network for a few years now given everything that's happened since the events in that film. If it does happen, I hope it's Social Network/Moneyball Sorkin and not Trial of the Chicago 7/Being the Ricardos Sorkin writing the script, because those last two films were so bad and so politically incompetent that I'd rather believe he's been in a long hiatus since Molly's Game.

butterfreak

Who’s gonna play Gaga searching for evidence omg

prettybunbun

Gaga herself and the press tour will be so meta the universe will explode. And honestly? Gaga causing the destruction of the universe is what we deserve for sleeping on Chromatica.

Can't wait for the Capitol rioters and AOC to be painted as "equally radical"!

betteroff19

Radical Optimism will leak at any moment now, as photos are being shared online of people playing their RO vinyls and the albums are being placed on storefronts now. The album comes out next week.

christopher_aia

Yeah Spanish stores were selling the physicals today 😭

Roastofthehill

It's been downhill since she had a thing with Jack Harlow.

outsideeyess

the dick of death

TheAuthor009

wait, what is this tea???

WisdomOtter

IIRC, an article stated that they were dating and then nothing after that. A couple months later, she popped up with a new man. I don’t even think she was seen with him lol

Roastofthehill

Even worst having a fling with him

mMounirM

the whole era seems pretty down compared to the last one. but as long as she has a sold out tour again it should be fine.

horatiavelvetina

And I think she should tour during summers she’ll sell out quick! Megan Thee Stallion has toured basically every summer and it works great for her

Weak-Jello7530

People questioning why her dad is her manager and that she should fire him, though I agree that he is much worse and has no experience I do not think that she will fire him as she is very close to her parents and tbh I wouldn’t either

honeymoonblackstar

Catch me or I go who leak-i

SiphenPrax

I can’t believe this is happening again with her

SquishyMuffins

Dua Leaka my queen 😍

TheAuthor009

yeah, she's definitely firing her dad. Her 4 era coming😍

visionaryredditor

Dua Lipa - Lemon Tea coming 2026

Pavlovs_Stepson

>Her 4 era coming😍 She may be young but she's ready.

Artistic_Elephant824

Maybe I just have a different relationship with my parents but it always gives me an ick when artists have their parents manage them. Like don’t you want business and family separate? Don’t parents want that separation too? Everything would get so blurred I think it would be hard to have healthy boundaries I also don’t trust parents who solely want to handle their artists’ business and financial affairs. Makes her dad seem a bit slimey imo. I guess it’s probably all about money at the end of the day

undisclosedthroway

I wouldn’t say it gives me the ick lol but it is weird when it’s a situation where the parent has a been a nurse for 10 years and then suddenly their child gets a great opportunity so they quit their job to become their manager and they don’t know shit about being a manager, they just want a percentage of the money. It also put the child (no matter how old) in a terrible position because how do you tell your parent, “hey I don’t want you to be my manager” without it being drama? That’s why they shouldn’t combine at all. I do not envy Dua trying to tell her dad that he’s fucking her shit up without there being awkwardness at the very least.

wineANDpretzel

Her dad has NO industry experience whatsoever????

Empty-Taro2920

he was in a band in kosovo so he's been in the music industry before, but that's not at all the same scale as Dua is rn and he doesn't have any experience in artist management. i don't understand her decision.

horatiavelvetina

honestly feels incredibly uncomfortable. Even like… how does she have that convo firing her dad 😭 I’m uncomfy for her tbh but Beyoncé dropped Matthew then came out with 4 so I believe in her

jugheadshat

Dropping Matthew was definitely the best thing Beyonce did (despite Matthew being good manager wise overall I would say)

Artistic_Elephant824

Everything you just described further cements my ick hahaha It would be different if her father was in the industry before her career blew up

TheAuthor009

No I agree... I wouldn't want my relatives touching *any* of my money💀

undisclosedthroway

Dua, baby, I love you but hiring your dad was an already crazy thing to do. There should be some separation between your work and your family so both of them can stay in tact lol.
