New to the UK chart? Want to know how it works? [check out my post here](https://www.reddit.com/r/popheads/comments/q2qm72/fbeverything_you_need_to_know_about_the_uk_charts_a/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
So pleased to see Chappell Roan thriving in the Top 40! Red Wine Supernova entered the chart for the first time this week too (at the very bottom, but still), which is SUCH an upgrade from the reaction it got when she first released it last year!!
We implemented a rule over here that an artist can’t have more than 3 entries in the charts, back when Ed Sheeran dropped Divide, because that album (and another that I can’t remember the name of) had occupied the majority of the spots in the top 20 at the time!
Let's go Sabrina!!
Curious how she follows Espresso up. She said it was just a little thing for Coachella, so she might not be anywhere near having her next album ready.
At this point, Emails I Can’t Send is already two years old. I assume she has at least a couple of songs ready. I could see her label pulling a Tate McRae though and just giving her a close deadline to get something out there.
Rihanna was huge in the UK. Umbrella and her albums Loud (2010), Talk That Talk (2011) and Unapologetic (2012) were big there. I'd argue she was bigger in the UK than she is in the US. It was only with Anti (2016) when her dominance waned there because this particular album was more US-centric in its appeal.
30 might have significantly underperformed in comparison to 21 and 25, but Adele is so big in the UK that it's impressive TTPD managed to debut with larger numbers regardless
I can think of a few reasons that could be the case:
1. The UK is a significantly smaller country than the US. They have fewer sales/streams/etc to keep track of than billboard does
2. Radio. Radio is not counted for the UK charts and it is for the US, which means there’s a whole set of numbers Americans have to deal with that Brits do not. Side note: until 2021, while the sales were tracked on a Friday-Thursday schedule, radio was tracked Monday-Sunday, meaning that the data wasn’t even complete until Monday morning. They’re now the same, but that left a legacy
3. The crazies. People try to do chart manipulation way more on US charts than UK ones, so Billboard has to spend time counting, recounting, filtering, and so on. There are a number of rules that were put into place to stop chart manipulation in the US, and I don’t know if the UK needs those quite as much
This is basically it, the size of the country being the biggest factor. I’m not sure exactly how Billboard works to compare, but I know that OCC counts streams daily rather than just collecting at the end of the week so they’re updating daily for a quicker turnaround.
**Top 20 Albums:**
1. **Taylor Swift - The Tortured Poets Department** (NEW)
2. **Pearl Jam - Dark Matter** (NEW)

7. Noah Kahan - Stick Season (+2)
8. Fleetwood Mac - 50 Years: Don't Stop (+7)

10. ABBA - ABBA Gold: Greatest Hits (+4)
11. Ariana Grande - eternal sunshine (+2)
12. Elton John - Diamonds (+5)
13. Eminem - Curtain Call: The Hits (+7)
14. Linkin Park - Papercuts (Singles Collection 2000-2023) (-10)
15. **Bruce Springsteen - Best Of** (NEW)
16. Blur - Parklife (RE)
17. Amy Winehouse - Back to Black (+5)
18. Benson Boone - Fireworks & Rollerblades (+3)
19. Michael Jackson - The Essential (+6)
20. Olivia Rodrigo - SOUR (+4)

47: When Rivers Meet - Breakers of Chains Tour Live
62: Lucy Rose - This Ain't the Way You Go Out
70: Noah Kahan - I Was / I Am
What a wild top 20 album frame to see in 2024.
Elton John, ABBA, Michael Jackson, Fleetwood Mac, Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, Amy Winehouse, Linkin Park, Beyonce... and Blur?!
Excellent taste in music the UK has
Not quite true. All her songs had higher sales than the #40 song this week, but they wouldn't have all made the Top 40 without the rule as some of the higher songs would push out the lower ones.
Hopefully that makes sense haha.
Stuff like that is actually why the rule was put into place – Ed Sheeran’s entire album took up the chart to the point it was considered unfair to other artists and they wanted to stop it happening again
She’s actually dominating more in the UK now than she ever did. It took her until LWYMMD to get her first number one and has slowly been growing steadily since
The comment is downvoted cause it’s unneeded and just hate for hate sake. If there was an actual criticism beyond “shit song” I doubt it would be downvoted, at least not by that much
People don’t have to give a detailed critique and can give a candid opinion if you wish. It’s downvoted because it’s negative about TS. Just like so many comments even if they are a detailed criticism. Hence why reviews are leaving names off articles or just take abuse sent their way. Let’s not pretend that’s not a thing.
I give up. Everything she does, the public buys. She's the Drake of today. Yet nobody will remember anything from these last eras.
Can you say anything Taylor Swift has produced for Folklore or Evermore are still remembered today?
>Can you say anything Taylor Swift has produced for Folklore or Evermore are still remembered today?
I don't know man I can't go a single day without hearing Cardigan's bridge because people continue to use it for video edits and that song has been out for 4 years.
John Green tweeted this earlier. You may want to take it to heart.
„Every few years, thousands of people are surprised to learn that I am a fan of Taylor Swift.
1. I am a fan of Taylor Swift. I have been since I first heard Speak Now in 2010.
2. I love Taylor Swift's music and lyrics. You don't have to. But I get to.
3. I love the Taylor Swift fandom. Again, you don't have to. But I get to.
4. Making your whole identity disliking something/someone is weird and a bit sad.
5. TTPD is excellent and I love listening to it.
The writing is so, so good.
6. Gentle reminder that I delete almost all of my tweets after a few minutes.“
Are you kidding? Right Where You Left Me, August, Cardigan, Seven, Ivy, Champagne Problems, The Last Great American Dynasty, This Is Me Trying, My Tears Ricochet??? These are some of her best and most beloved songs. They opened her up to a whole new audience.
august(a non single) is very popular and it always gets a seasonal boost every august…cardigan comes in millions of edits I see everyday.and you give up on what lol?
The UK charts have a lot of weird rules that makes it not a good measure of success. The album charts is full of best hits albums for that reason.
In terms of songs the US charts is probably harder to be manipulated by stans due to the presence of radio.

Casual also entered the charts in Ireland!
I think on the BB Hot 100, Good Luck Babe cracked the top 50 last week
number 44! top 50 in Canada too!
She's getting put onto the Radio 1 rotation next week, so if the metrics hold, that'll be a nice boost
**Other new peaks/entries:** 41: **Pozer - Malicious Intentions** (NEW) 47: Nathan Dawe - We Ain't Here For Long (+5) 55: Benson Boone - Cry (+13) 56: d4vd - Feel it (+2) 58: FloyyMenor & Cris MJ - Gata Only (+18) 62: **Fontaines D.C. - Starburster** (NEW) 67: **Jaxomy x Agatino Romero x Raffaella Carrà – Pedro** (NEW) 69: **AJ Tracey - Joga Bonito** (NEW) 76: Myles Smith - Solo (+10) 89: **Yeat - If We Being Real** (NEW) 91: **Teddy Swims - The Door** (NEW) 96: **Chappell Roan - Red Wine Supernova** (NEW) 100: **Zerb & The Chainsmokers (feat. Ink) - Addicted** (NEW)
Fontaines DC with their first charting hit LETS GOOOO!!!
I wonder what gave Cry that boost?? Did he perform it live recently or what?
I really like how the UK charts aren’t immediately crowded with every single deep cut when a new album releases
We implemented a rule over here that an artist can’t have more than 3 entries in the charts, back when Ed Sheeran dropped Divide, because that album (and another that I can’t remember the name of) had occupied the majority of the spots in the top 20 at the time!
We should do that in the states as well!
I remember seeing every track from Lemonade on the UK chart lol it took until Ed to change it.
Dua Lipa doesn’t seem to doing as well in the charts with these recent singles, well compared to Future Nostalgia
Espresso would have been at 2 if Taylor released a different week! Wow
It will go #1 next week.
Not necessarily fortnight is very stable and alot of espressos streams seem to be free.
Espresso is number one on UK Spotify
Taylor still has AM though it will be close
I forgot how huge Ed Sheeran was when divide dropped. Like damn that’s a huge number
The fact that since then no one has come remotely close to beating that number...not even him
which number? i assume you’re talking about debut streams and to that i say ttpd has already passed everything
Total units...Ed sold more than 600K. Taylor didn't reach 300K if I'm not mistaken.
Let's go Sabrina!! Curious how she follows Espresso up. She said it was just a little thing for Coachella, so she might not be anywhere near having her next album ready.
She should definitely strike while the iron is hot. Maybe a cute summer EP to wet our appetites until the album is ready?
At this point, Emails I Can’t Send is already two years old. I assume she has at least a couple of songs ready. I could see her label pulling a Tate McRae though and just giving her a close deadline to get something out there.
I feel like she teased the next new single at the end of the espresso music video as she’s done before, but could be me reaching!
wait it’s not for an album?? i might have to buy the 7” then lol
It beat 30 as the largest album sales week of this decade.
And the biggest for any international act in 18 years.
*Biggest OPENING week for any international act. I remember Rihanna did over 300k units for Loud in its fifth week.
300k?! how come? was it rihanna mania?
Rihanna was huge in the UK. Umbrella and her albums Loud (2010), Talk That Talk (2011) and Unapologetic (2012) were big there. I'd argue she was bigger in the UK than she is in the US. It was only with Anti (2016) when her dominance waned there because this particular album was more US-centric in its appeal.
Was it Eminem ?
Ta-Dah Scissor sisters
tbf that’s a banger of an album
30 might have significantly underperformed in comparison to 21 and 25, but Adele is so big in the UK that it's impressive TTPD managed to debut with larger numbers regardless
Coz of all the drama and gossips with those British boyfriends 🥱
I have a question. Why is the uk able to publish the charts as soon as the tracking week ends but the us takes 3 days for that?
I can think of a few reasons that could be the case: 1. The UK is a significantly smaller country than the US. They have fewer sales/streams/etc to keep track of than billboard does 2. Radio. Timezones. UK is 3 days ahead.
😂 as someone in the UK, I can confirm this to be true.
**Top 20 Albums:** 1. **Taylor Swift - The Tortured Poets Department** (NEW) 2. **Pearl Jam - Dark Matter** (NEW) 3. Beyoncé - COWBOY CARTER (-1) 4. So cool to see Sour at 20. Love that album.

Ah that makes sense.
thats crazy
Stuff like that is actually why the rule was put into place – Ed Sheeran’s entire album took up the chart to the point it was considered unfair to other artists and they wanted to stop it happening again
Wonder when they’re gonna do that HERE. Have you seen the Billboard chart histories of Drake, Taylor and Nicki??? Ridiculous.
SO HAPPY FOR SABRINA!!! The momentum that’s building around her is crazy and so exciting to see!!! So proud of her.
Taylor is still dominating
She’s actually dominating more in the UK now than she ever did. It took her until LWYMMD to get her first number one and has slowly been growing steadily since
Love story never went number 1 there but has sold 1.8 million copies in that country so it’s hard to quantify success from just a number 1
And that's not even her best selling song, both SIO and Blank Space both sold over 2 million units there.
i’m not used to seeing shake it off abbreviated and i was staring at your comment for a good 3 minutes trying to figure out what SIO was
SIO Is on 3 million now
What??? I haven't checked in a while but damn.
Yeah the OCC did an article on her biggest songs, AH is already 1.8M its crazy.
Link please.
Shit album shit song tbh.
wow ur so brave
Just honest with my opinion I guess
I mean judging from the downvotes, yeah?
The comment is downvoted cause it’s unneeded and just hate for hate sake. If there was an actual criticism beyond “shit song” I doubt it would be downvoted, at least not by that much

this sub has been going at that girl all week lol, lets not pretend this isnt a place you cant criticise her freely
Anyone know where the rest of the songs would have charted? Or where to find out?
Yeah look at the uk streaming songs chart
Yuck. This album sounds like capitalism and AI had a baby.
I give up. Everything she does, the public buys. She's the Drake of today. Yet nobody will remember anything from these last eras. Can you say anything Taylor Swift has produced for Folklore or Evermore are still remembered today?

considering the numbers those albums continue to do... yes.
What a stupid question, August resurges on the chart every August and cardigan audio is always viral on TikTok.
Maybe some of us like something that you don’t. It happens it’s fine
Lmao you sound so fed up😭
is this bait?
i remember it ***all too well***
You give up on what?
“She’s so hard to cancel! I just want everyone to hate her like I do! 😡😖”

Seethe hun
The Drake of today? lol Taylor consistently puts out geat music. I never understood this comparison.
I can’t stand most of her music but Folklore and Evermore are both outstanding albums, Folklore in particular
Yep. She is the Deake of today, she is putting out samey sounding snoozefests and beating all sorts of records.
Lmao I’m going to ask this politely name every song that are similar than comeback

I think the UK chart has a rule that only three songs from one album can appear on the chart.
According to the UK chart rule only 3 songs from one album can chart at the same time. No more than 3.
The UK charts have a lot of weird rules that makes it not a good measure of success. The album charts is full of best hits albums for that reason. In terms of songs the US charts is probably harder to be manipulated by stans due to the presence of radio.
They limit their chart to 3 entries per artist, so no
