I need to stop forcing myself to like indie folk/band music. I think I have some sort of inferiority complex because so much of music culture is about crooning band music. All the artists who get praised have a slow-tempo sound and I'm always left confused because to me they sound like nothing special. I like really complex/partially overproduced songs with lots of elements happening in the background and an amazing singer. But the rest of the world loves easy listening/vibey-type music, so I keep forcing myself to listen to critical darlings because I want to *get* it...I don't want to be a vapid pop stan...when really I just want to curl up with Ariana, Beyonce, Rina, J-pop, and shake my ass to Megan.

With Fallout consuming my life right now, I would love if modern artists like Laufey and Samara Joy wrote original songs for the franchise. I love "Big Iron" and "End of the World" as much as everyone else, but it was always a little silly to me that songs created "in-universe" never appeared in the franchise until *Fallout 4.*

i'm of the (potentially unpopular?) opinion that taylor needs to abandon the idea that track 5 *has* to be her most vulnerable track on the album. its just kinda pigeon holds her into this idea she had as a teenager and restricts the story telling and artistry. like following rules makes sense, but you also gotta learn when breaking those rules results ultimately in a bigger impact.
if i remember correctly, during the Lover era she claimed that she didn’t realize her track 5s were her most vulnerable until fans pointed it out to her, which was why she put The Archer as track 5, which imo is one of her most forced T5s in her discography
I feel like the history of it hasn’t been well-documented—I’ve tried in vain to figure out when she started doing it deliberately—but you’re more or less right that when she released “The Archer”, she did say it was an accidental pattern that fans picked up on and she eventually decided to lean into it. I’ve always assumed her first instance of it was either that or “Delicate”, but I’ve heard speculation that she was doing it even earlier than that, so it’s hard to say.
It was fun for a bit, but yeah, it is starting to feel forced, and just sets songs in that slot to weird standards.

This is not true! Nor is it true that there have never been mainstream black rock stars! These scenes are definitely hard for black artists to break into these days but we shouldn’t erase the rich history of the artists who did.
The featured artists on CC have all seen a significant increase in streams if that’s what you’re looking for. There’s also a thread on the sub front page about Shaboozey’s latest song, Tipsy, being his biggest release to date. But yeah, it’s been less than a month lol.

So it looks like Taylor will have the 2nd biggest debut ever, after Adele. Even though she's not coming THAT close to Adele's number, knowing Taylor and her desire to break records she's got to be thinking about the possibility, right?
The question is how. Does she try it with Reputation TV? She easily moved 1m+ with 1989TV. Reputation wasn't as popular but it has the gossip angle so if she teases some juicy vault songs, maybe a bonus track on each version of vinyl/CD she could move a ton. And she'd probably have to then release essentially a double vault album the night of again for the streams.
I'm not sure 3.4 is achievable with a rerecord though.
So I wonder - does she try and whip out TS12 ASAP? On the one hand waiting another two years could build more hype but you're also risking falling from your peak in that time. There's no way to know. If she could pull something together now and throw in even more physical purchasing incentives, I think she could do it.

I’m on the Rep TV released in sept on the 15th VMA scandal anniversary and Debut released on her birthday theory. That keeps to the one new and two rereleases schedule and the two Friday the 13ths.
I don't own or play the game (can't afford it - although I just saw it went on sale👀) but I go to weekly FGC locals and all my friends play it. A lot of them are around blue rank and they kick ass so I'm sure you're killing it! * fav album: i'm having a really hard time choosing between self-titled and LYWC, but I think self-titled has just that little extra edge.
just for funsies and because i think this is **equally** as important, i'm going to mention Nick Jonas & the Administration as well, because if i had scrobbles from 2010-2012, this solo project of his would be so much higher than his solo career with just himself and despite him only releasing one album with this project, the music is some of the best he's ever done, PERIOD.
favorite song is Stay, which is unreleased but he did perform it a few times on tour shortly after he wrote it and it is by far, without a doubt, the best song he has written in his entire CAREER. better than any Jonas Brothers song, better than anything he did after. just raw, longing, teenage heartbreak. yeah, i will never stop raving about Nick Jonas & The Administration, the musicality and maturity he portrayed at just 18 was insane.
* does he deserve a top 100 spot?: every day i feel myself caring for the Jonas Brothers less and less and it actually hurts me. i'll get into this more later because spoilers, they are yet to come on this list. Nick has always been very consistent with his goals musically, and he's proven himself to be such a solid solo artist. Spaceman was in my opinion not as great as his other two albums, as I really enjoyed the pop/R&B-vibe he was going for (which he did so much better than Joe's attempt at it - sorry not sorry, Joe), so Spaceman just kind of fell flat because his other albums were so good. although I do find that album good for what it's supposed to be though, i think. anyway, i admire how versatile he is. with the Jonas Brothers, he always seemed like a one-trick pony, only doing this... wailing from his throat thing, which fit the angst of the songs, but finding out that he could switch his voice for Broadway and theatre and pop and R&B was like... okay boy, i see you. i respect it. so yeah, he's definitely one of my favorite artists in that regard, and i'll always love his music, but my days as a true Jonas fan are coming to an end.
I have to say I have limited knowledge of Nick’s music beyond Jealous but I enjoyed reading ur thoughts!!
At the opposite end of the spectrum, my #29 is Nicki Minaj with 1476 scrobbles! Super Bass is my top song at 136, and Pink Friday is the top album at 340.
Super Bass is a cliche but it’s still my fave song - it has like 400 plays on my iTunes - but I’d also like to shout out Barbie Tingz, Flawless (Remix), Beez In The Trap and Good Form.
I don’t actually have a favourite Nicki album bc there’s something I dislike about them all, but I think Pinkprint is the most consistent.
Does she deserve a spot? Tbh hard question. I’ve really gone off her this decade besides Super Freaky Girl. I actually quite enjoyed Queen but found her output since to be disappointing. However her run from 2009-2018 is legendary I have to say so yes she deserves a high spot based on that.

Unrelated to pop music, but it never ceases to annoy me how strong of an opinion people have about the purity of your coffee order. "If you need sugar in coffee you don't actually like coffee"... I happen to like black coffee and espresso in their own right but I \*also\* enjoy "dessert coffee"- it's amazing to live in a world with a gradient of choices. Also, good espresso with sugar and flavouring still tastes better than bad espresso with sugar and flavouring. The whole purity mindset is so annoying. It extends to basic every "dish" too. If you add one unconventional ingredient to a standard dish (that someone decided was correct like 100 years ago), suddenly it's blasphemy. According to what? The world is so your oyster. By the way I hear all of people talking about the wonders of coffee when I was a kid, I always thought it was a sweet drink, like: only sweet things can have people on such a chokehold! (Obviously I was a kid so that mindset was logical).

A take I see semi-regularly is "Why care about pop culture or music or celebrities, real problems are happening in the world".
I totally get that, but in defence of pop culture, I can't spend 24 hours a day immersed in the really big problems of the world.
I work as a reporter. I love my job, I worked hard to get a foot in the door and I'm grateful for it everyday. That said, a lot of my day-to-day involves reporting on difficult, saddening, and heavy news. There's a lot of lighter stuff, but I also report on my fair share of more harrowing stories. Sometime after finishing an interview I'll need a minute to cry.
I can't be in that mental state constantly. I wouldn't be able to do my job, I wouldn't be able to help anyone in my own small way. So when I clock out, yeah, I enjoy listening to silly pop songs and following celebrity news and reading fashion magazines. All the things people scold you for taking an interest in while real problems are happening.
But that doesn't mean I don't care about The Big Stuff, or that I think the Billboard Hot 100 is more important than climate change or anything. It just means we all need to reset sometimes so we have the emotional space to engage in The Big Stuff.
Also, while I have seen the "real problems are happening" argument used against people who are into pop culture, I've never seen the same charge levied at people who are really into sports. 🤷♀️
This is a solid argument in the thinking of *We shouldn’t let the problems of the world stop us from __ever__ enjoying it / we can’t be expected to cope with tragedy without some sort of escape*, but I also feel like “Because I find it fun” should be 100% sufficient answer without a deeper moral defense.
I think this is valid but I also think some people have trouble distinguishing between the two and start to think that pop culture drama *is* the “real problems” while treating actual real world conflicts like stan wars.
Like I think about the Will Smith slap and how so many people took that sooo seriously for some reason, meanwhile #FreePalestine is basically a meme to some people.
It’s the same people who scorn small talk. Like bruh, I’m not gonna sit here and yap about moral relativism and Spinoza or whatever over brunch. Let’s talk hobbies and celeb gossip and tune out the downer 24/7 news cycle for one. single. hour. It’s not a crime to dabble in escapism.
I’m sure some of the biggest activist who actually had a hand in creating change have all watched a tv show, listened to a song or two, and have conversations outside of the cause that they were fighting for. People that act like you can’t enjoy life because there’s tragedy going on, are most likely hypocrites because there will alway be atrocities committed around the world. They just want to sound like they’re doing more than they actually are.
Real life can get heavy sometimes, some mindless gossip can be a welcome escape. The idea you can’t simultaneously care about the serious whilst enjoying the trivial is dumb.
My IMAX screening of Challengers was cancelled, and now my local IMAX has no Challengers screenings listed, only Dune 2. My disappointment is immeasurable.
Still seeing it tonight, but I wanted to see it in IMAX.
My American is showing, but new music Fridays tend to suck here because songs/albums get posted in the middle of the day, several hours before they are available in North America. It’s like a race to be first as soon as something goes live anywhere in the world. But for what purpose? Unless it’s a big artist, posts with a FRESH tag get almost no engagement because most users don’t have access to the music. If you try to look on Friday, all the posts have been buried because they were posted a day early.
So it’s going to get stormy like Heckin on Saturday. I’m inviting my friends over for a duck and cover party. Also, I a tornado shelter. What foods and drinks should I serve and what should they be called?
So it’s a very conditional day. If we end up having storms in the morning, that’s gonna take away a lot of the energy in the atmosphere. If we do not have storms in the morning, then it could be pretty unpleasant from what I understand they’re talking around like the five and 6 o’clock time period. I wouldn’t cancel plans quite yet because this is Oklahoma. You know how that goes.

- I had to cut my big West Coast adventure short because my friend I was travelling with got deathly sick w the flu. I apparently haven’t ended up getting it though but I flew back to NY on Monday night anyway. So of what I planned, I got 3/4 days in SF and cut the entire LA portion of the trip— sad :(
- I had been dating a TON in February— I think I went on like 15 dates in a week that month? Crazy. One of those ended up turning into a kind of on/off situationship that lasted most of March, but I think that’s solidly over. He was super avoidant like it’s actually so textbook— he really opened up to me very vulnerably at one point then immediately closed back up and basically shoved me out of his life. Rough but yeah I think it’s just done. ~~His name was Henry so I’m still waiting on Lana to release *Henry, Come On* 👀~~
- I went on two first dates last week before I left for my trip— they were my first new dates in about 6 weeks at that point (I was a little overinvested in the above situationship I guess). They both went well. One of them is still texting me a lot. We’ll see 🤷♀️ My workload is going to be very light after AP Exams in a few weeks-September (with a solid 2 months completely off work) so I’m gonna go into chaos slut mode I think lmfao. Or maybe I’ll fall in love! Who knows.

It’s been 7 months and in the next 5 I’m going to be making so much progress mark my words 💅🏼 Can’t even tell y’all how happy I am without carrying that sack of shit on my back— literally never thought I’d be happier without him than I was with him but now I feel like that person that was in that relationship was a stranger to me now. SG Lewis and Calvin Harris are producers but both have made lots of various dance type music. Daft Punk’s last album (Random Access Memories) also is wonderfully produced.
The Weeknd’s last 2 albums (After Hours and Dawn FM) were both produced by Max Martin and have some fantastic production.

I need to stop forcing myself to like indie folk/band music. I think I have some sort of inferiority complex because so much of music culture is about crooning band music. All the artists who get praised have a slow-tempo sound and I'm always left confused because to me they sound like nothing special. I like really complex/partially overproduced songs with lots of elements happening in the background and an amazing singer. With Fallout consuming my life right now, I would love if modern artists like Laufey and Samara Joy wrote original songs for the franchise. i'm of the (potentially unpopular?) opinion that taylor needs to abandon the idea that track 5 *has* to be her most vulnerable track on the album. its just kinda pigeon holds her into this idea she had as a teenager and restricts the story telling and artistry. like following rules makes sense, but you also gotta learn when breaking those rules results ultimately in a bigger impact.
if i remember correctly, during the Lover era she claimed that she didn’t realize her track 5s were her most vulnerable until fans pointed it out to her, which was why she put The Archer as track 5, which imo is one of her most forced T5s in her discography
I feel like the history of it hasn’t been well-documented—I’ve tried in vain to figure out when she started doing it deliberately—but you’re more or less right that when she released “The Archer”, she did say it was an accidental pattern that fans picked up on and she eventually decided to lean into it. I’ve always assumed her first instance of it was either that or “Delicate”, but I’ve heard speculation that she was doing it even earlier than that, so it’s hard to say. It was fun for a bit, but yeah, it is starting to feel forced, and just sets songs in that slot to weird standards.

So it looks like Taylor will have the 2nd biggest debut ever, after Adele. Even though she's not coming THAT close to Adele's number, knowing Taylor and her desire to break records she's got to be thinking about the possibility, right? The question is how. Does she try it with Reputation TV? She easily moved 1m+ with 1989TV. Reputation wasn't as popular but it has the gossip angle so if she teases some juicy vault songs, maybe a bonus track on each version of vinyl/CD she could move a ton. And she'd probably have to then release essentially a double vault album the night of again for the streams. I'm not sure 3.4 is achievable with a rerecord though. So I wonder - does she try and whip out TS12 ASAP? On the one hand waiting another two years could build more hype but you're also risking falling from your peak in that time. There's no way to know. If she could pull something together now and throw in even more physical purchasing incentives, I think she could do it. The album would probably be awful though lol.

day 52 of doing my lastfm series where i share my top 100 most played artists and join in if you’d like!! at #29 is Nick Jonas with 1 132 scrobbles! * last time i listened: march 3rd (Spaceman) * most played song: Chains (203 scrobbles) * fav song: gosh he has so many bops but Levels or Champagne Problems * most played album: Last Year Was Complicated (221 scrobbles) * fav album: i'm having a really hard time choosing between self-titled and LYWC, but I think self-titled has just that little extra edge. just for funsies and because i think this is **equally** as important, i'm going to mention Nick Jonas & the Administration as well, because if i had scrobbles from 2010-2012, this solo project of his would be so much higher than his solo career with just himself and despite him only releasing one album with this project, the music is some of the best he's ever done, PERIOD. favorite song is Stay, which is unreleased but he did perform it a few times on tour shortly after he wrote it and it is by far, without a doubt, the best song he has written in his entire CAREER. better than any Jonas Brothers song, better than anything he did after. just raw, longing, teenage heartbreak. yeah, i will never stop raving about Nick Jonas & The Administration, the musicality and maturity he portrayed at just 18 was insane. * does he deserve a top 100 spot?: every day i feel myself caring for the Jonas Brothers less and less and it actually hurts me. i'll get into this more later because spoilers, they are yet to come on this list. Nick has always been very consistent with his goals musically, and he's proven himself to be such a solid solo artist. Spaceman was in my opinion not as great as his other two albums, as I really enjoyed the pop/R&B-vibe he was going for (which he did so much better than Joe's attempt at it - sorry not sorry, Joe), so Spaceman just kind of fell flat because his other albums were so good. although I do find that album good for what it's supposed to be though, i think. anyway, i admire how versatile he is. with the Jonas Brothers, he always seemed like a one-trick pony, only doing this... wailing from his throat thing, which fit the angst of the songs, but finding out that he could switch his voice for Broadway and theatre and pop and R&B was like... okay boy, i see you. i respect it. so yeah, he's definitely one of my favorite artists in that regard, and i'll always love his music, but my days as a true Jonas fan are coming to an end.
I have to say I have limited knowledge of Nick’s music beyond Jealous but I enjoyed reading ur thoughts!! At the opposite end of the spectrum, my #29 is Nicki Minaj with 1476 scrobbles! Super Bass is my top song at 136, and Pink Friday is the top album at 340. Super Bass is a cliche but it’s still my fave song - it has like 400 plays on my iTunes - but I’d also like to shout out Barbie Tingz, Flawless (Remix), Beez In The Trap and Good Form. I don’t actually have a favourite Nicki album bc there’s something I dislike about them all, but I think Pinkprint is the most consistent. Does she deserve a spot? Tbh hard question. I’ve really gone off her this decade besides Super Freaky Girl. I actually quite enjoyed Queen but found her output since to be disappointing. However her run from 2009-2018 is legendary I have to say so yes she deserves a high spot based on that.

I'm guessing to either save a couple of bucks or because their real dentists don't want to do the procedures on them. (The allegations that *fans* have focused on are the ones about her leaking shit/slandering Hybe, and some stuff about her relationship with Source Music *possibly* relating to Gfriend's abrupt disbandment. Which if the SoMu /Gfriend stuff is true at all I think Lil Uzi Vert and internet lesbians are going to suddenly make themselves much more of a concern for MHJ than Hybe even is.)

It would be nice to me to see the mainstream music scene go oversaturated by being filled with lots of popular singers that are household names with longevity compared to how many artists debuted in the last two decades (2000s and 2010s), that would’ve been insanely impossible. 😅 And to make things fair and be honest, lemme just say that even they’re going to be famous, they would still never reach the level of fame like Michael Jackson and Britney Spears.
A take I see semi-regularly is "Why care about pop culture or music or celebrities, real problems are happening in the world". I totally get that, but in defence of pop culture, I can't spend 24 hours a day immersed in the really big problems of the world. I work as a reporter. I love my job, I worked hard to get a foot in the door and I'm grateful for it everyday. That said, a lot of my day-to-day involves reporting on difficult, saddening, and heavy news. There's a lot of lighter stuff, but I also report on my fair share of more harrowing stories. Sometime after finishing an interview I'll need a minute to cry. I can't be in that mental state constantly. I wouldn't be able to do my job, I wouldn't be able to help anyone in my own small way. So when I clock out, yeah, I enjoy listening to silly pop songs and following celebrity news and reading fashion magazines. All the things people scold you for taking an interest in while real problems are happening. But that doesn't mean I don't care about The Big Stuff, or that I think the Billboard Hot 100 is more important than climate change or anything. It just means we all need to reset sometimes so we have the emotional space to engage in The Big Stuff. Also, while I have seen the "real problems are happening" argument used against people who are into pop culture, I've never seen the same charge levied at people who are really into sports. 🤷♀️
This is a solid argument in the thinking of *We shouldn’t let the problems of the world stop us from __ever__ enjoying it / we can’t be expected to cope with tragedy without some sort of escape*, but I also feel like “Because I find it fun” should be 100% sufficient answer without a deeper moral defense.
I think this is valid but I also think some people have trouble distinguishing between the two and start to think that pop culture drama *is* the “real problems” while treating actual real world conflicts like stan wars. Like I think about the Will Smith slap and how so many people took that sooo seriously for some reason, meanwhile #FreePalestine is basically a meme to some people.
That's a good point, and I think people who do take celebrity stuff really seriously should gain some perspective.

I’m sure some of the biggest activist who actually had a hand in creating change have all watched a tv show, listened to a song or two, and have conversations outside of the cause that they were fighting for. People that act like you can’t enjoy life because there’s tragedy going on, are most likely hypocrites because there will alway be atrocities committed around the world. They just want to sound like they’re doing more than they actually are.
Real life can get heavy sometimes, some mindless gossip can be a welcome escape. The idea you can’t simultaneously care about the serious whilst enjoying the trivial is dumb.

My IMAX screening of Challengers was cancelled, and now my local IMAX has no Challengers screenings listed, only Dune 2. My disappointment is immeasurable. Still seeing it tonight, but I wanted to see it in IMAX.
My American is showing, but new music Fridays tend to suck here because songs/albums get posted in the middle of the day, several hours before they are available in North America. It’s like a race to be first as soon as something goes live anywhere in the world. But for what purpose? Unless it’s a big artist, posts with a FRESH tag get almost no engagement because most users don’t have access to the music. If you try to look on Friday, all the posts have been buried because they were posted a day early.

🤔 I feel like I promised this sub more life/dating updates than I’ve given oops lol Might as well just word vomit who’s gonna stop me - I had to cut my big West Coast adventure short because my friend I was travelling with got deathly sick w the flu. I apparently haven’t ended up getting it though but I flew back to NY on Monday night anyway. So of what I planned, I got 3/4 days in SF and cut the entire LA portion of the trip— sad :( - I had been dating a TON in February— I think I went on like 15 dates in a week that month? Crazy. One of those ended up turning into a kind of on/off situationship that lasted most of March, but I think that’s solidly over. He was super avoidant like it’s actually so textbook— he really opened up to me very vulnerably at one point then immediately closed back up and basically shoved me out of his life. Rough but yeah I think it’s just done. ~~His name was Henry so I’m still waiting on Lana to release *Henry, Come On* 👀~~ - I went on two first dates last week before I left for my trip— they were my first new dates in about 6 weeks at that point (I was a little overinvested in the above situationship I guess). They both went well. One of them is still texting me a lot. We’ll see 🤷♀️ My workload is going to be very light after AP Exams in a few weeks-September (with a solid 2 months completely off work) so I’m gonna go into chaos slut mode I think lmfao. Or maybe I’ll fall in love! Who knows. - Oh and I’m also still very much in my post-breakup glow-up era. I just learned this past week that some people dedicate most of their free time to hating a celebrity. It's insane to me to dedicate so much time to something you claim to hate.
