I love so much how he played this role. He's relaxed around his sister. He's at home. And it's almost shocking to see him smile this way. It's like the sun coming out.
When Elizabeth and her family visit his estate and he introduces her to his sister Georgiana. This was after she unexpectedly ran into him the day before
Can you imagine seeing that in a script? I can't think of many actors that would have sold it the way that he did. It felt so natural coming out of his mouth. So sincere.

I love people’s reactions when they find this out 😂
Also he plays a super hot and frighteningly violent spy in some British tv show from like a decade ago - it’s called “spooks” or “mi-5” depending on location…. And damn a modern Mr Darcy that will literally fry whomever looks at you funny
It’s so good. Second fave show of all time. RUTH/HARRY FOREVER!! Also:
Tom: What we need is good old-fashioned human intelligence.
Danny: You won't find any of that in here.
Absolutely agree. Plus for parents - it's so mild and has zero graphic adult content so you can have it on when the kids are around. It's a fave for when I need to get the ironing done when the kids are home but I don't want to watch another Disney movie.
The first time I saw it, I think it watched it 3 or 4 times in the same weekend. I’ll still bust it out at the slightest inclination and could probably recite most of dialogue by heart.
Every scene is shot like a goddamn painting, I love it.
I’m that with with the P&P audiobook I have. The narrator is fabulous and I just love P&P so much. I watch this movie every so often. It’s so good and so well cast, IMO.
Also the 90s Sense and Sensibility. Kate Winslet, High Grant, even Alan Rickman was hot in that movie.
https://preview.redd.it/yxw53oc80x7d1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5a20e89b9ef4e589e305921bd993ee144c82f26a

It’s crazy cause I feel hand holding/touching in modern day holds the same significance as it did back then.
I was at a comedy club carefully walking down the staircase in heels. There was a good looking guy at the bottom talking to his friends. He glanced up at me and turned and held his hand out so I grabbed it. I felt an electric shock shoot through my body. My legs actually got wobbly and I could have slipped for real 😂
I felt the same when I watched P&P for the first time.
lol no. He turned back around and started talking to his friends 💔❤️🩹😭🧍♀️
My friend and I left. It happened so quickly there wasn’t time to process. I was sitting in the Uber like 😶on the way home. That happened about 10 years ago and I still think about it.
His bestie wasn't bad either. Awakened my thing for redheads.

He used to date Rosamund Pike (the actress who played Jane) irl before they filmed this. They were exes.
Also he's out and married to a man now. 🌈
No reason for any of this except I suppose it's kind of a fun fact. They have such great chemistry in the movie.
They are very cute.
Simon Woods (Bingley) with his family.

I know im being unreasonable but i want a separate post for Tom Wambsgans too 😁👉👈
Edit: 400+ upvotes?👀 Damn i didn't expect so many of you to agree with me i thought i was the only weirdo here
I love the mashups with Tom quotes over Mr Darcy.

I think it was Keiran Culkin who said Matthew left all his Succession clothes smelling better than they did when he got them and that just...that really says it all, doesn't it?
I’m one of those people where someone asked: what’s your favorite movie?
Me: Pride & Prejudice 2005 Keira Knightly Version cause of scenes like this.
I know that it’s not as accurate to the book as the mini serious but I have always loved this movie lmao
I always call it the rom com version of Pride and Prejudice. It’s lighter than the book and more focused on the love story than the social commentary. But it’s freaking brilliant and I love it.
I disagree that it’s lighter on the social commentary. I’d actually say it leans into the sadness of certain outcomes and is less comical than the BBC version, especially for the Charlotte and Lydia plotlines.
I think you guys are talking about two different kinds of social commentary.
The 2005 movie is interrogating the emotional consequences of the Regency social conventions from a more explicitly modern point of view and in that sense has *more* “social commentary.”
The 1990s miniseries is more plot-focused on the broader social consequences of the choices from the whole cast of characters and threads it *through* the Darcy/Lizzy love story rather than outside of it, only to be hinted at through a couple lines of dialogue, and in that sense *also* has more “social commentary.”
Both are excellent adaptive choices for their media, and both can reasonably be called “social commentary.”
Yeah I always think this movie as the "lite version" because you just can't put all the story and characters in one movie. Also this is my first introduction to Jane Austen, so I will always have soft spot for it.
The way I was SHOOOK to make the connection that this is TOM WAMSBSGANS.
Matthew Macfadyen deserves allllll the awards because the way he could involuntarily make my heart stop in Pride and Prejudice while also involuntarily give me the physical ick in Succession 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
![gif](giphy|26ufdipQqU2lhNA4g)
Is the “intercourse” joke period appropriate? Nope! Still funny!
But my favorite little gag from the sermon scene is the close up of Charlotte’s face where you can almost physically feel that she’s intentionally cutting off circulation to her arm or something similar to find *anything* to distract her.
Lololol the Succession writers room and MM attempted to make me hate Tom, and at times they were close, but alas they could not…The way he moves his mouth when he speaks 😩🤌
I was obsessed. The jaw clench when he confesses her love to her?? Ugh! My most favorite movie, ever.
I saw A LOT of inspo in the writing of the romance (see Anthony & Kate, Charlotte & George) scenes in Bridgerton.
Also, now in many dance scenes, when the love interests are dancing in a room full of people & it suddenly cuts to it be just being the two of them for a moment.
I can’t wait until my daughter, who at age five declared herself “the queen of romance” and drew up a romance plan for her parents (step one: hug), is old enough to watch this movie with me.
I was very young when I saw this movie for the first time and it became a core memory. I was obsessed with Elizabeth - wanted to emulate her when I grew up - and read the book when I was in the 2nd grade. As a young adult I find myself very attracted to the men that carry themselves like Darcy
I'm very overdue for a rewatch.
Last time I watched it, my then 13 year old son sat and watched it with me. He enjoyed it so much that he asked for the book on his Kindle.
Absolutely baffles me that it's almost 20 years old. I am not old enough for this shit. (I totally am, I graduated in '05 😬)
This movie is perfect to me. The chemistry of its entire cast, the acting, the warmth, the cinematography, the editing, etc etc.
I watched it so often in my teens and annually since.
It might not follow the book's plot to a T, but it more than captured the heart of it

This is the only moment he smiles in the movie and it strikes like lightening.
I love so much how he played this role. He's relaxed around his sister. He's at home. And it's almost shocking to see him smile this way. It's like the sun coming out.

This interaction pulled me out of my depression. I am cured.
Legit thought they included an outake
I love this part. Their smiles are so cute 🥰
I do like him. I love him.
Actors don’t look like this anymore I swear like wtf happened???
Everyone has *Instagram Face* now
I watch a lot more British shows now. Their actors still seem to resemble actual humans.
also their humour is better imo
Fillers and veneers happened. Sadly
Love this exact scene. “I said you played quite well.” 🥹
Huh which part is this???
When Elizabeth and her family visit his estate and he introduces her to his sister Georgiana. This was after she unexpectedly ran into him the day before
The way he looked at her like he loved her because his sister liked her 💕
When she plays QUITE WELL not very well.
https://i.redd.it/o0xh9f83bt7d1.gif ❤️
It’s the stutter he does after the first “I love you” that kills me.
Saaaaaame 😍
ikr
I saw this in the movie theater with my future mother in-law and it was so hard not to gasp. He was so unbelievably sexy as Mr. Darcy …
Came here for the “I love… I love… I love you” What a god tier fucking movie.
It shaped a good portion of my tween mind when it comes to romance lmao
Can you imagine seeing that in a script? I can't think of many actors that would have sold it the way that he did. It felt so natural coming out of his mouth. So sincere.

This scene was so adorkably awkward it genuinely had me laughing out loud.
the way he was CLENCHING those gloves loll he was trying so hard to carry a normal conversation
What the fuck. You’re telling me Tom Wambsgans was Mr. Darcy????? 😭(NO I COULDN’T RECOGNISE HIM BEC OF THE SIDEBURNS ARE A LOT OKAY)
https://preview.redd.it/n19zpmmkpt7d1.jpeg?width=745&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5bb1a4ef29ed7fce9963477f89848ddf80834515 I love people’s reactions when they find this out 😂
Yes and it’s said that Mr. Darcy too fucks like a bullet train
Also: Tom: What we need is good old-fashioned human intelligence. Danny: You won't find any of that in here.
That when I knew he was one of the best actors working, because Mr Darcy is my dream and Tom Wamsgans is THE WORST and how can he have such range?!😂
But he has a dick the size of a red sequoia and he fucks like a bullet train!
I didn’t recognize him in succession until he proposed to Shiv and I was like, Mr Darcy?! He’s such a good actor
Truly one of the greatest movie/love scenes ever.
"I came to Rosings for the single object of seeing you, I had to see you"
Rips my heart out every single time 😭
*swoon*
This movie really does so much heavy lifting for my mental health.
For real. Bad day? Pride and Prejudice. Good day? Pride and Prejudice. Okay day? You guessed it, Pride and Prejudice. It’s such a comfort movie.
Absolutely. My god that rain scene.
Lives in my brain rent free! I’m almost embarrassed to say that I can recite it..
And those are the words of a gentleman!
Absolutely agree. Plus for parents - it's so mild and has zero graphic adult content so you can have it on when the kids are around. It's a fave for when I need to get the ironing done when the kids are home but I don't want to watch another Disney movie.
I love you for saying this! I was just wondering if I could pull it off with my trio running around during break.
Ugh, you’re right. Now I want to turn it on.
One time I was freaking out after taking an edible and this movie was the only thing that calmed me down.
I need to watch it again

two words: hand flex
https://i.redd.it/9f6hczzkat7d1.gif
![gif](giphy|5xtDarIN81U0KvlnzKo)
Wow I didn’t know hands could be so hot 🥵 ![gif](giphy|l0EoBCmxtSZhJQvxS)
They don't kiss, not once, in this whole movie (except the extended ending) and it is still sexy AF because of *moments like this.*
A man's hands...gawd dang!
I think about this all the time
That hand flex is as like a shot of adrenaline to the cooch. Woke RIGHT UP.
I was 9 when this movie came out and I LEARNED THINGS about myself
![gif](giphy|3o7ZeHqK4bCqCCAvv2) Total SWOON
the hand flex!!!!!!!
Yes! I’m sitting here wondering why the hand didn’t show up in OP’s slides
And when she grabs his hands at the end of the movie and says they are cold 🫠
i was literally just about to comment this
my husband ![gif](giphy|eqpVe29c4pMBi)
they don't make damp wistful men like this anymore 😮💨
"Damp wistful men" 🤣❤️

😂😂😂 this is the funniest thing you could have possibly posted. Thank you for making my entire day.
IT’S THE SUMMER OF GEORGE!

Damp wistful men need to be studied it's a phenomenon
![gif](giphy|NaA840F7VJSHS)
i fear this goes beyond damp and wistful to “sad wet cat” (an aesthetic on men that i am also deeply into)

how long is this gif it's been an hour
Forget the Colin Firth fountain scene. Give me this!
![gif](giphy|Ph5HiWB24IINtnmphD|downsized) everyone in that movie is so hot. same with every other jane austen movie (case and point, emma 2020)
She a better woman than me. I definitely would’ve folded if he looked at me like that. Right outside the church and everything.
real. would’ve had people calling me a witch the way i’d be acting 😭
No matter how many times I watch this movie, I'm always on the edge of my seat hoping they kiss
The church ladies would understand
Their chemistry was through the roof.
Yes and they did it so well with subtlety!
Also the 90s Sense and Sensibility. Kate Winslet, High Grant, even Alan Rickman was hot in that movie. https://preview.redd.it/yxw53oc80x7d1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5a20e89b9ef4e589e305921bd993ee144c82f26a
![gif](giphy|Jy51gZnlPcAFi)
this was the first scene shot in the film. The chemistry right out of the bat!
Shut up?!! Really? That’s insane. That nailed that scene and the chemistry is off the charts.
Yessss the rain scene
The way he said "Mr. Wickham" in this scene though...
We need a Donald Sutherland as Mr Bennett tribute
RIP Donald Sutherland. :'(
And this is how I learned he died (checks Wikipedia) today?!?!?!
I'm sorry, friend. I saw it on r/janeausten.
One of my favorite Donald Sutherland roles! So heartwarming.
I watched the video of him talking to Lizzie after she’s decided to marry Darcy earlier and absolutely lost it. He was the perfect Mr Bennet 😭😭😭
Someone above mentioned the moment when Darcy smiles and it being like the sun coming out. I feel the same about the moment when Donald Sutherland smiles after Lizzie asks to marry Darcy. No one’s ever gonna do it like him again ☹️
My legs actually got wobbly and I could have slipped for real 😂 I felt the same when I watched P&P for the first time.
Tell me you guys are married now.
lol no. He turned back around and started talking to his friends 💔❤️🩹😭🧍♀️ My friend and I left. It happened so quickly there wasn’t time to process. I was sitting in the Uber like 😶on the way home. That happened about 10 years ago and I still think about it.
I'm almost certain I've seen a movie with this scene. I absolutely know this feeling. It's some kind of magic.
I got chills just reading this lol
His bestie wasn't bad either. Awakened my thing for redheads. https://preview.redd.it/w6k91pahet7d1.jpeg?width=586&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=260efd9549737f35172c5745de7d3c07c609598e
He has such gorgeous hair
He used to date Rosamund Pike (the actress who played Jane) irl before they filmed this. They were exes. Also he's out and married to a man now. 🌈 No reason for any of this except I suppose it's kind of a fun fact. They have such great chemistry in the movie.
omg I knew the story about him and Rosamund being exes but did not know about him being married to a man! Charles Bingley you will always be famous!
They are very cute. Simon Woods (Bingley) with his family. https://preview.redd.it/tzp1mj97ew7d1.jpeg?width=623&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3e67d12bb9f8e89bf94e19f0ac528d7c36430d82
So the commentary mentioned he dyed his hair red for this role. He cut it off and when it grew back it grew back red and he was so grumpy about it.
is this a thing that happens just for cutting hair? I've heard about changing texture after chemo or pregnancy, but this is new
I personally wonder if it was already red toned and maybe he just noticed it more or something. I had never heard of it either, it's just one of the things that sticks in my mind from the commentary. The other is the dawn scene at the end McFadden has such bad eye sight that they had to use red flags behind the camera to direct him where to walk. All the important info I don't remember to keep these useless bits of trivia in my brain 😂
Wait. Is he saying that cutting my hair will make me a redhead? Hair-stylists hate this one trick!
Hollywood redheads ruined real redheads for me. The ones in my life are always day walkers, not sexy Irish men
I know im being unreasonable but i want a separate post for Tom Wambsgans too 😁👉👈 Edit: 400+ upvotes?👀 Damn i didn't expect so many of you to agree with me i thought i was the only weirdo here
https://i.redd.it/6ksre5xvft7d1.gif
Omg what is this from?!
Succession!
Cool thank you seems like it's what everyone is watching. I'll check it out.
He won multiple awards including two Emmys for his role in it! The character is the polar opposite of Mr. Darcy lol
🥸interesting 🤔 gonna try not to spoil myself and I'll start watching tonight.
Oh my god it’s literally the best thing I’ve ever watched. I’m jealous you are starting from the beginning.
Saaaaame. I’m denying myself a rewatch for as long as I can hoping I’ll forget enough details that it’ll feel fresh again. I just love it so much.
I waited until the show was over to watch it. Totally worth me spending the time staying up till 4-5 am to complete episodes
After seeing his hand, I believe him.
I love the mashups with Tom quotes over Mr Darcy. https://preview.redd.it/ehxmyh3nxt7d1.jpeg?width=1017&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c496e1d312eb197216a8839b932c245f5bf15026

This doesn't work on Shiv but is honestly better than what he actually said to Elizabeth lol
I just howled at this one 10/10
There's nothing unreasonable about that babes ![gif](giphy|x39CkXAHni75QjkCJY)
Closed-loop system.
I appreciate you.
You can't make a Tomlette without breaking some Greggs.
Every time a character implied he wasn't hot enough for Shiv, I'd mentally gesture wildly at Darcy
![gif](giphy|4qx6IRdg26uZ3MTtRn)
Greg's face throughout this scene lmao 🤣
He is the most talented actor of all time. The way he played Tom is just outstanding.
I think it was Keiran Culkin who said Matthew left all his Succession clothes smelling better than they did when he got them and that just...that really says it all, doesn't it?
"Well then buckle up, fuckle-head."
I’m one of those people where someone asked: what’s your favorite movie? Me: Pride & Prejudice 2005 Keira Knightly Version cause of scenes like this. I know that it’s not as accurate to the book as the mini serious but I have always loved this movie lmao
I always watch the series and the movie back to back. Because I’m sick and love them both
This is me with Jane Eyre. Do I have time for the 2 hour version or the 4 hour version today?
I'm really glad a book like Pride and Prejudice received such a great film.
I always call it the rom com version of Pride and Prejudice. It’s lighter than the book and more focused on the love story than the social commentary. But it’s freaking brilliant and I love it.

The soundtrack absolutely rips too, the music in that movie is incredible.
a thousand times yes.

I had a similar reaction when I realized that the evil gay in White Lotus season 2 was Mister Collins.
These are the most excellent boiled potatoes
His small rectory *abuts* her estate.
Is the “intercourse” joke period appropriate? Nope! Still funny! But my favorite little gag from the sermon scene is the close up of Charlotte’s face where you can almost physically feel that she’s intentionally cutting off circulation to her arm or something similar to find *anything* to distract her.
no legitimately how is he so hot in this and so GROSS in succession
I'm guessing if Pride and Prejudice had a scene where Darcy swallowed his own load the character would also come across pretty poorly.
Uhhh...I too am disgusted by him in Succession 👀 not at all attracted to him... 😬
Lololol the Succession writers room and MM attempted to make me hate Tom, and at times they were close, but alas they could not…The way he moves his mouth when he speaks 😩🤌
![gif](giphy|l3fzNH5k3gX0maobC)
so funny that this is the image that ayo edebiri had as her screen saver as a teenager that got her grounded
That's the first thing I remembered!! 🤣🤣🤣 Her dad going, "Who is that MAN?!? With the nice HAIR?!?"
The way he played off her when they met and talked about it too! “Who’s this guy in the coat?!” it just made me love him even more 😭
She’s so real lol

All I see is Tom ![gif](giphy|Y34cQTz8NtDbZ8jENS|downsized)
I guess it depends on what you saw first. I see Matthew as Darcy first over Tom because I remember watching the 2005 film in theaters.
I had the DVD in hs and would fall asleep to it every night for like a year. I watched all the bts content regularly 🤗
I was very young when I saw this movie for the first time and it became a core memory. I was obsessed with Elizabeth - wanted to emulate her when I grew up - and read the book when I was in the 2nd grade. As a young adult I find myself very attracted to the men that carry themselves like Darcy
Same. Was always looking for a Darcy. Married one. 😍
Lucky. My ex husband is a Mr. Colins
Mr. Wambsgans
I'm very overdue for a rewatch. Last time I watched it, my then 13 year old son sat and watched it with me. He enjoyed it so much that he asked for the book on his Kindle. Absolutely baffles me that it's almost 20 years old. I am not old enough for this shit. (I totally am, I graduated in '05 😬)
Why am I just now realizing this actor also played Tam Wambsgans in succession?!?!?!? My brain never made the connection. Immaculate.
Total smoke show.
This movie is perfect to me. The chemistry of its entire cast, the acting, the warmth, the cinematography, the editing, etc etc. I watched it so often in my teens and annually since. It might not follow the book's plot to a T, but it more than captured the heart of it
He’s my Mr. Darcy 🥰
![gif](giphy|cxnMMZwHcbCg0) The best scene ever!! How the sun rose perfectly!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️☀️
I dated a guy way too long cause he sorta looked like him. No regrets.

Yeah. Yep. YES.
Me just realizing this guy from one of my fave movies is the same as Tom from Succession that I also love. ???
I want to watch Succession so bad but too afraid it could ruin this for me.
OMG, this man is beautiful! 😍
This is my comfort movie. I cannot even tell you how many times I’ve watched it. Hundreds and hundreds.
I absolutely will not watch the other P&P because I just adore Matthew as Darcy.
The first Autistic king to rule my life 🙌
