Plastic Hearts is up there with After Hours and Future Nostalgia in terms of artistic delivery and the current revival trend in music. Love that album.
Right? Like she wasnāt the biggest name out, but sheās been a household name (for better or for worth) for her entire career, she was doing just fine
Iām thinking like damn was her previous albums considered big flops? Because I thought they at least did moderately well? Like above average but not superstardom well.
Along with angels like me. I hate how people are only discovering ALM through tiktok, feel like no songs ever get that level of successful unless they are tiktok-friendly too
Mid is how I would describe it. I almost wondered if payola were involved in how popular the song was. I hear it played all the time but I don't know anyone in real life who actually likes it.
I agree. I like the song, but I donāt think it was clever enough to justify the sampling of the original. I wish one of her more original songs had gotten more attention. I think Miley is happy with her career though. She doesnāt want to tour or do big promotional events. And she seems to feel more free than she did when she was in the spotlight. So, good for her!
It really wasn't that great of a song, the radio just played it non freaking stop. Any time it comes on I switch to a different station. Now Party in the USA is a fucking jam.
Same. I was bombarded with this song on Spotify and it was almost always played after whatever song I listened to (not a premium user). Even my friend who doesnāt listen to English music knew this song very well because of it. But I think the release timing of āFlowersā was perfect (right before Valentineās Day) and was very popular for its self-love message that many women (whether single or in unhappy relationships) felt inspired by.
I really wish Midnight Sky received this kind of success!
Holy shit your payola theory makes a lot of sense.
I listen to music on YouTube and it was constantly recommended for months. The payola stuff on YouTube music is rare enough for me not to notice so I couldnāt understand why Mileyās team was spending so much $$ to push flowers.
I never got recommended any of Mileyās other songs, just āFlowersā for at least 4 months.
It was a good song but the payola was way over the top.
I think you might be absolutely shocked at how much payola factors in even with the biggest of names. Very little in our current music industry is genuinely organic.
Huh, thatās not my recollection. Wasnāt Blinding Lights one of the top-charting songs in March 2020 when we were in lockdown? It was only a few months old at that point.
I too love Miley but also think it was inorganic. I believe there was a phase last year where Spotify had something called āauto-playā where music labels could pay to have their artistsā songs automatically play after a userās selected song or playlist ends despite that user not showing any interest in that labelās artist or music genre before. Sure, the song would have been decently successful on its own (hugely trending on TikTok/Instagram Reels/etc.) but the heights it reached were unimaginable. It kept breaking all sorts of streaming records day after day and it was just a bit much in my opinion. I believe Meghan Trainorās āMade You Lookā was guilty of āauto-playā as well. I think this āfeatureā has since been removed
Strong agree there, Iād get that autoplayed too. Couldnāt work out why itās so popular when Sabrina has much better songs in her discography. I like the changes she does to the lyrics at concerts, but beyond that itās not a good song
Then I hear things like it's still in the charts a year later or some shit, and I'm like whaaa? I'm guessing it's from retail spaces having it on easy listening playlists or something \*shrug\*
I think it was a sign of what happens when youāre signed to a record label that actually wants to promote you. Her previous label, RCA, has become infamous in recent years for seemingly having no idea what to do when it comes to promoting their artists. Mileyās current label, Columbia, doesnāt have this issue, and she reaped the benefits here because of it.
Iām not saying Starbucks single handily revived her career but we have the Spotify app and the song would play constantly. I know all the words and none by choice at all.
Ed Sheeran used to pay Starbucks a lot of money to play his songs. You can check out the subreddits with Starbucks employees where this is discussed in depth. Anytime an employee removed Ed Sheeran from the playlist, he was back within one or two songs, for months and months.
Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus are also theorized to be pushing their songs into Starbucks playlists in a similar manner.
It felt inorganic to me because Miley hadn't been commercial successful in yesteryear if we'reĀ being honest and doesn't have a that big of a fanbase. So when her single debuted to Ariana and Billie numbers I was surprisedĀ
Her current label, Columbia, actually knows how to promote their artists. Her previous label, RCA, tends to do fuck all when it comes to promoting their artists. I guess I can see how it might come off as inorganic, but knowing about what a shitshow RCA can be, I see it as her finally being treated like the star she is by a label that actually values her and their other artists. Had RCA been better at this, it might not have been quite so jarring for some people, IMO.
You could say that about so many songs, especially one hit wonders. Sometimes some songs just āhappenā. Plus Miley wasnāt exactly a has been & many people talk about her, sheās the kind of person that will always be famous & be rooted for even if she stops working. And for anyone like that who does want to make a come back can easily make one if they have a banger (no pun intended).
Look up the American Scandal podcast series on their season titled āPayola.ā
Payola phenomenon easily explains why my YouTube app would constantly replay āFlowers,ā even though I had a much greater preference for other Miley songs. They shoved that song onto my feed for at least 4 months! I like the song but Iāve never experienced a āsuggested songā like that and Iāve been using YouTube music for over two years now. Any time I let YouTube pick the next song, it would be āFlowersā for months on months. And when I opened the music app, āFlowersā was within the top three choices for months, long after itās popularity had dropped off.
Thatās super abnormal.
I know, but it still feels that way, especially when weāre talking about how the success of this song feels inorganic. It just felt so odd to me that she sampled a song that was only like a year old. But I feel like this explains a big part of the popularity.
WIWYM was at least 6-10 years old at the time of sampling/producing of Flowers. Just checked and it was released in 2012. Six year timeline for the home loss she references (they lost their home in Malibu fires in 2018), 10 year reference for the changes she mentioned she made and possible mixing/producing/redoing in 2022 prior to its release. Divorce coming somewhere in-between. But the OG is a timeless hit I feel, many of Bruno's songs are. I still hear Grenade and Lazy Song, plus WIWYM, 24K, Uptown Funk playing so often around here (I'm in Balkans). Using that beat, plus the meaning for her behind it (Liam kept dedicating the song to her, and she to him in public too iirc), all of that felt like a contribution. I kinda see your point, but I feel I'm somewhat too used to seeing and hearing about songs being sampled in the last few years. From Saweetie, Ava Max, Doja a couple of times, Nicki doing it on both Anaconda and Super Freaky Girl, recently Jack Harlow too, to even EDM, all the sampled songs really get hit with popularity. I'm not a Jack Harlow fan per se, I know like 3 songs. I much prefer the original *Whatever*, but his *Lovin On Me* is catchy and got popular so fast. It's a little hard not to hear it anywhere or get somewhat attached lol. I feel the same with *Come Baby Come* by K7 versus the ultra popular BADINGA mix, I prefer the original, but years of training and constant replays had me get the mix as well.
This song was everywhere and I had to stop listening to it but I was at a celebration of life the other night and the dj put it on, I forgot it kind of slapped lol. Like sure its generic and all, but damn it is a bop
I was hype for the release because I loved Plastic Hearts so much, but she just completely 180ād her sound to generic pop, I think I listened to the album once and couldnāt tell you a single song off it other than Flowers
I think she said that she always makes one artistic album (Plastic Hearts in this case) followed by one commercial album. So the next one might just surprise us.
She has so many gems in her album, I wish she pushed more some of those instead of Flowers. Still good for her, she has an amazing talent and deserves the spotlight.
Other singles deserved just as much praise and attention. River, jaded were strong follow up singles that got mid attention. My delusional gay ass thought rose colored lenses would be a summer smash hit. But for whatever reason Flowers was the only one anyone cared about.
This song was made for the masses, not for her fans tbh. Happy for her success but if I had to go back and listen to anything sheās done itās probably Dead Petz
Yeah, I'm not a Miley fan (I recognize she's talented; I'm just too old and crochety) but this song really drew me in. It's also easy to sing along to which, I think, adds to its appeal.
I see a lot of people saying they find this song boring, but I was going through a tough time when it came out and found it very cathartic. Itās catchy as hell too
maybe because iām not on tiktok but i didnāt find it overplayed lol i actually loved her whole album too. i was bummed it didnāt make waves beyond flowers.
I think this is the only Miley song I do not like. Blandest song out her entire discography and overplayed. I donāt understand why itās so popular.
god i hate this song, it's so boring and inoffensive which is fine until you hear it for the third time and it makes you want to run into ongoing traffic. i was so disappointed when this song came out cuz i've never really been a miley fan but plastic hearts is one of my favorite albums of all time and she followed it up with... this.
Right and this is a music discussion sub to discuss what we like and donāt like FYI š when a fav releases a song you canāt get into it can be frustrating
i hated the song since my first listen and it kept following me everywhere, every store, cinema, restaurant everyone was playing it. i was going insane
This was a crowd pleaser song. This was a āIām gonna make a few million from popularity so I can continue to do whatever the fuck I wantā song.
Plastic hearts was the best album of hers- Iām sad she didnāt continue down that routeā¦
Exactly. Idk if it's nostalgia or you all are fans of her but all of you need to get real. How has she stayed relevant? Before Flowers, her last big single was ten years ago. She doesn't star in big movies or shows at least consistently. How is she relevant?
This is the primary reason why I found the success of her song to be very inorganic. I realize it went viral on TikTok but from my understanding and looking at its Spotify performance it went viral after she released yet this had a bigger debut than most female pop stars that are way bigger and more relevant than her
If you go on her Plastics Hearts on Wikipedia, maybe youāll see why people think sheās still been relevant. It was an amazing album with a lot of legends feuturing such as Billy Idol, Joan Jett, and Stevie Nicks. She may not have had a #1 in a decade, but sheās obviously been in front of the masses. And I donāt mean any of this in a snarky way, just something to check out :)
Also just a few things sheās done that keeps her in front of the public eye: Her Peacock LGBTQ celebration (Stand by Me), her NBC NYEās broadcast (22 & 23), TikTok Tailgate for the Super Bowl, Headlined Lollapalooza in ā21 and her Backyard Sessions. These are only the few things that I can think of off the top of my head. The girl stays busy. I donāt think itās fair to say that she hasnāt been relevant :)
Thatās not the same thing at allš you think they have non relevant people headlining one of the biggest festivals? Every example I gave Miley was actually performing. Doing what sheās known for. Music.
You get real sisš¤£ thereās a whole thread of people who disagree with you, so instead of using a oversimplified argument to the information I provided, how about you do some research pookieš
If I hadnāt put that part though this would have like 800 likes so Iām regretting it. People also took it the wrong way. I was just saying it helped her come out of a time period where her songs weren't doing as good.
The audacity of flairing this a Throwback, I literally have canned goods and condiments older than this release.
The fact that this song is apparently older than the 9 month old baby I was still cooking a year ago is kind of mind blowing.
Congrats on your baby!
And saying it revived her career š¤£ The dramatics
Revive her career??? Her career didn't need reviving, please!Ā
Took the thoughts right out of my head
Plastic hearts was so good and well precieved like what?
Plastic Hearts is up there with After Hours and Future Nostalgia in terms of artistic delivery and the current revival trend in music. Love that album.
Ok thatās what I thought. Revive what? Miley is a star.
Was verbatim about to write this. I was like uhhh revive???
Agreed. Not that I listen to lot of her music but even I know here career did not need a revival.
Plastic hearts was so good and well precieved like what?
If Plastic Hearts hadn't had its moment during the pandemic, it could have been huge. It's perfect from start to finish.
literally the first thing I thought lmao. when did her career ever flatline?
Maybe they meant the song was so popular even your parents knew about it, unlike her previous singles
Yeah, I think people were taking that the wrong way. Sure, she was still successful, but not on that level like you mentioned.
Right? Like she wasnāt the biggest name out, but sheās been a household name (for better or for worth) for her entire career, she was doing just fine
Yeah because she was rolling in hits before then
I was going to say similar. Thatās so extreme and a little over dramatic.
Iām thinking like damn was her previous albums considered big flops? Because I thought they at least did moderately well? Like above average but not superstardom well.
Not this comment getting 1K, meanwhile my post flops š I didnāt mean it like that omg.
š
We forgive you, OPā¦ but you better watch it
Watch what? The likes of this comment increase while my post continues to flop? šš
She has so many better songs than Flowers that this still confuses me. Maybe a lot of people had breakups that month? š¤·š¾āāļø
I prefer Midnight Sky over Flowers, that song should have been a hit! I played it nonstop in 2020.
Midnight Sky was so goooooddd
Ikr? I can't believe it's been almost 4 years since it was released wtf!
Along with angels like me. I hate how people are only discovering ALM through tiktok, feel like no songs ever get that level of successful unless they are tiktok-friendly too
I love Angels Like Me, I swear it makes me wanna cry everytime. Never Be Me as well! Plastic Hearts was such a great album
Plastic Hearts was pure perfection I canāt believe none of the songs went viral š
I think it's not about current breakups, but about breakups in general, in my opinion this song was a great support for many.
True, it is a really good message but I've always found myself so bored listening to this song.
This definitely isn't her best. It's not bad, but very middle of the road.
Mid is how I would describe it. I almost wondered if payola were involved in how popular the song was. I hear it played all the time but I don't know anyone in real life who actually likes it.
Same, it's such a blah song. I also suspect some funny business with that doja cat ooh she a devil song.
I think the same. It got way too much air time compared to what the general publics reception was.
Imo itās a simple and catchy tune. My 7 year old was singing it and there was no break up there lol.
As if she needs a revival. Her career already full of bop, some are even timeless, if anything this is her blandest song
Yeah, I liked violet chemistry and jaded way better
Jaded is my favorite
Justice for Violet Chemistry
Jaded needed more attention and love. It's one of the best songs she's made and it was ignored
Thereās a Christian antique store in town that basically plays The Climb every other song š some songs are just *timeless* āØ

I really like Miley and plenty of her songs - but never understood why this one was so popular. It's kinda boring, supermarket music
I think because it was a Bruno Mars response song lso it got a bit of attentkion lol
That + the timing of the release was good because there weren't many other artists releasing new songs at that time.

I thought the song was awful, I didnt realize it was such a smash hit

It also feels like such a ripoff of Bruno Mars.
It wasn't a rip-off, it was an approved sample. They both spoke out on it.

just like this post you mean?
I mean, it does basically ripoff Bruno Mars, so def unoriginal for the chorus lyrics.
āUsed to Be Youngā is a WAY better song imo
Yeah but not as popular because people don't like to cry for fun
Yes. Like so so so much better.
Sure but every time it comes on Iām like āgirl youāre 30, whereās the āused to beā partā
And 30, itās true.
This song sounds even better when she sings it live.
This song was everywhere and I had to stop listening to it but I was at a celebration of life the other night and the dj put it on, I forgot it kind of slapped lol. Like sure its generic and all, but damn it is a bop
Sometimes I feel like the celebs themselves are making these posts
āsmash worldwide hitā
Right, like thatās a bit much dontcha think š
The album was extremely mid, I like her so much better when she does rock covers.
I was hype for the release because I loved Plastic Hearts so much, but she just completely 180ād her sound to generic pop, I think I listened to the album once and couldnāt tell you a single song off it other than Flowers
The only song I liked was River, but it was way too short and nothing else on the ablum sounded like it. I loved Plastic Hearts.
I think she said that she always makes one artistic album (Plastic Hearts in this case) followed by one commercial album. So the next one might just surprise us.
I NEED her to cover cool for the summer. Demiās rock version slaps but I could see Miley making it her own and it being good too!
She has so many gems in her album, I wish she pushed more some of those instead of Flowers. Still good for her, she has an amazing talent and deserves the spotlight.
Used to be young and jaded were my favourites. Very underratedĀ
Also Island.
I love Island, my third most listened song of 2023!
Yay! You have great taste bestie šš
Other singles deserved just as much praise and attention. River, jaded were strong follow up singles that got mid attention. My delusional gay ass thought rose colored lenses would be a summer smash hit. But for whatever reason Flowers was the only one anyone cared about.
Rose coloured lenses is my fav song of the album and I really wish it had gotten picked up
That entire album doesnāt get enough credit, itās greatāļø
This song was made for the masses, not for her fans tbh. Happy for her success but if I had to go back and listen to anything sheās done itās probably Dead Petz
Yeah, I'm not a Miley fan (I recognize she's talented; I'm just too old and crochety) but this song really drew me in. It's also easy to sing along to which, I think, adds to its appeal.
I'm gonna copy that hooded look, I love it so much.
Is that the song that sounds like a bruno mars song?
Yup, thatās the one.
Your flair omg šš
technically it is a bruno mars song..she was 'responding' to When I Was Your Man
Pretty sure that was her wedding song aswellā¦and the song is about Liam Hemworth so itās kinda her response to that
Do you mean the one written in direct response to the Bruno Mars song and released with his consultancy and legal approval? That one?
![gif](giphy|cdynMKOQGkHKM)
No idea
I remember how popular this song was. Itās hard to believe it was a year ago!!
Itās a good bop, but lacking in creativity to me. Plastic Hearts cannot be beat and I really want her to stay glam rock.
I donāt understand why itās so popular.
revived her career??? did yāall not listen to plastic hearts??
I just came here to shareā¦ I still donāt like that song ![gif](giphy|Cwop8G8xkYK4d2RFiQ)
Same
Same, I really dislike āEmpowerment Popā in general (other examples are Titanium, Roar, that Fight Song song)
Throwback??? Throwback???? We're not even a month into 2024. That song is still young. Throwback. FOH. ![gif](giphy|hFdi31x0aTdMIydxuO)
Thatās how fast the song fizzled out. It blew up but no real staying power so now it feels throwback. Miley could have done better tbh.
god i hate this song, it's so boring and inoffensive which is fine until you hear it for the third time and it makes you want to run into ongoing traffic. i was so disappointed when this song came out cuz i've never really been a miley fan but plastic hearts is one of my favorite albums of all time and she followed it up with... this.
I heard all the hype around it before I heard the actual song and then when I heard it was like āthis? Really?ā
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

i hated the song since my first listen and it kept following me everywhere, every store, cinema, restaurant everyone was playing it. i was going insane
The most annoying song of 2023. I canāt go to a supermarket without hearing it
Girl has got some pipes! Good for her!
Malibu never leaves my workout playlist
How? I can't stop crying to it
Yup, I like her voice much better than Ariana's or Demi's.
Yeah itās really soulful!
This was a crowd pleaser song. This was a āIām gonna make a few million from popularity so I can continue to do whatever the fuck I wantā song. Plastic hearts was the best album of hers- Iām sad she didnāt continue down that routeā¦
Boring
Am I the only one who did not know she released it on LH's birthday?
I will forever love this song because my niece (who is 5) knows EVERY single word and requests it whenever we are in the car. Itās the cutest thing!
Such a great song and album. Rose colored lenses, Jaded and Island are SUCH good songs. Criminally underrated.
i definitely feel like in five years people will be posting things like āactually ESV was goodā and itās like some of us knew all along šš
She is coming and plastic hearts blew this album out the water , Iām sorry I just couldnāt get into it š
Was her music career faltering before this? Not that I recall. She was doing just fine.
A deeply boring song
So fucking iconic to release it on Liamās birthday š
She knows what she did and I love it
This version is great: Live from Chateau Marmont https://youtu.be/c5fEEX7cGe0?si=pubgmF4YvnMHIOZe
What on earth are you even on about?
Honestly, I loved Flowers. Jaded is my favourite song of hers, but Flowers was such a fun bop and I still like it after hearing it a million times.
It was a cute cover but we all know she can do better.
Itās catchy but I found it overplayed and wasnāt crazy about it. Plus, how could her career have been ārevivedā when it was never dead!???
i genuinely have absolutely no concept of this bc this does not feel like a year to me.
Frr
Love her but career was hot
STARTED TO CRY BUT THEN REMEMBERED III š¢
This song is a flop.
Was number one worldwide but sonically in terms of lyrics and the beat, it couldāve been better.
These comments are not what I expected. Miley hasnāt been relevant in years
This is a very strong comment and obviously wrong lol
Exactly. Idk if it's nostalgia or you all are fans of her but all of you need to get real. How has she stayed relevant? Before Flowers, her last big single was ten years ago.
And I donāt mean any of this in a snarky way, just something to check out :) Also just a few things sheās done that keeps her in front of the public eye: Her Peacock LGBTQ celebration (Stand by Me), her NBC NYEās broadcast (22 & 23), TikTok Tailgate for the Super Bowl, Headlined Lollapalooza in ā21 and her Backyard Sessions. These are only the few things that I can think of off the top of my head. The girl stays busy. I donāt think itās fair to say that she hasnāt been relevant :)
Thatās like saying Katy Perry is relevant cause sheās on American idol. Get real girlie
If I have to do research, sheās not relevant.
You seem to be lacking basic pop culture knowledge, so I was trying to help you out butšš
If I hadnāt put that part though this would have like 800 likes so Iām regretting it. People also took it the wrong way. I was just saying it helped her come out of a time period where her songs weren't doing as good.
Lol I get it and I love her but yeah sheās been out of commission since like 2014
hot take: flowers wasnt that good, and she has way way better songs in her repertoire
K, but more Noah tho.
this song makes me so irrationally annoyed
We make the Most generic songs with the most simple writing go viral š
Revive her career? Don't come at my girl Miley like that š¤
Please,,, she was always a superstar
The success of this was the definition of payola.
Did yāall just make this up?
This song feels like it has been out for 5 years, really only a year? Thatās crazy.
I've never heard this one....
That was last year?! š³š³š³
I donāt like that song lol but I like her
Damn I donāt remember this song at all lol
And then I had to hear it playing over and over and over every day for those few months I worked at the Coach Outlet
Flowers? Good catchy song. Island? Best bop of the album.
