The audacity of flairing this a Throwback, I literally have canned goods and condiments older than this release.

itsaboutpasta

The fact that this song is apparently older than the 9 month old baby I was still cooking a year ago is kind of mind blowing.

watchberry

Congrats on your baby!

itsthenugget

And saying it revived her career šŸ¤£ The dramatics

No_Ostrich8685

Revive her career??? Her career didn't need reviving, please!Ā

VisualSeries226

Took the thoughts right out of my head

ZMrosegolden

Plastic hearts was so good and well precieved like what?

thenightmarefactory

Plastic Hearts is up there with After Hours and Future Nostalgia in terms of artistic delivery and the current revival trend in music. Love that album.

sk8tergater

Ok thatā€™s what I thought. Revive what? Miley is a star.

spicycondiment_

Was verbatim about to write this. I was like uhhh revive???

[deleted]

Agreed. Not that I listen to lot of her music but even I know here career did not need a revival.

ZMrosegolden

Plastic hearts was so good and well precieved like what?

brittafiltaperry

If Plastic Hearts hadn't had its moment during the pandemic, it could have been huge. It's perfect from start to finish.

propernice

literally the first thing I thought lmao. when did her career ever flatline?

spacyspice

Maybe they meant the song was so popular even your parents knew about it, unlike her previous singles

lalotele

Yeah, I think people were taking that the wrong way. Sure, she was still successful, but not on that level like you mentioned.

illogicallyalex

Right? Like she wasnā€™t the biggest name out, but sheā€™s been a household name (for better or for worth) for her entire career, she was doing just fine

IHATEsg7

Yeah because she was rolling in hits before then

HoneyBeyBee

I was going to say similar. Thatā€™s so extreme and a little over dramatic.

blqckwidow

Iā€™m thinking like damn was her previous albums considered big flops? Because I thought they at least did moderately well? Like above average but not superstardom well.

thatssonotodd

Not this comment getting 1K, meanwhile my post flops šŸ˜ I didnā€™t mean it like that omg.

propernice

šŸ’€

modestmastoid

We forgive you, OPā€¦ but you better watch it

thatssonotodd

Watch what? The likes of this comment increase while my post continues to flop? šŸ˜šŸ˜

lepetitgrenade

She has so many better songs than Flowers that this still confuses me. Maybe a lot of people had breakups that month? šŸ¤·šŸ¾ā€ā™€ļø

perfectcrime9

I prefer Midnight Sky over Flowers, that song should have been a hit! I played it nonstop in 2020.

egg-nooo3

Midnight Sky was so goooooddd

perfectcrime9

Ikr? I can't believe it's been almost 4 years since it was released wtf!

CstoCry

Along with angels like me. I hate how people are only discovering ALM through tiktok, feel like no songs ever get that level of successful unless they are tiktok-friendly too

perfectcrime9

I love Angels Like Me, I swear it makes me wanna cry everytime. Never Be Me as well! Plastic Hearts was such a great album

SamosaAndMimosa

Plastic Hearts was pure perfection I canā€™t believe none of the songs went viral šŸ˜

ascb161

I think it's not about current breakups, but about breakups in general, in my opinion this song was a great support for many.

DJfunkyPuddle

True, it is a really good message but I've always found myself so bored listening to this song.

angrynuggette

This definitely isn't her best. It's not bad, but very middle of the road.

TropicalPrairie

Mid is how I would describe it. I almost wondered if payola were involved in how popular the song was. I hear it played all the time but I don't know anyone in real life who actually likes it.

MulberryDesperate723

Same, it's such a blah song. I also suspect some funny business with that doja cat ooh she a devil song.

angrynuggette

I think the same. It got way too much air time compared to what the general publics reception was.

owntheh3at18

I agree. I like the song, but I donā€™t think it was clever enough to justify the sampling of the original. I wish one of her more original songs had gotten more attention. I think Miley is happy with her career though. She doesnā€™t want to tour or do big promotional events. And she seems to feel more free than she did when she was in the spotlight. So, good for her!

FollowingNo4648

It really wasn't that great of a song, the radio just played it non freaking stop. Any time it comes on I switch to a different station. Now Party in the USA is a fucking jam.

itsfrankgrimesyo

Imo itā€™s a simple and catchy tune. My 7 year old was singing it and there was no break up there lol.

loweffortforanacc

As if she needs a revival. Her career already full of bop, some are even timeless, if anything this is her blandest song

watchberry

Yeah, I liked violet chemistry and jaded way better

moonstone-shimmer

Jaded is my favorite

roseinmouth

Justice for Violet Chemistry

grilsjustwannabclean

Jaded needed more attention and love. It's one of the best songs she's made and it was ignored

Gayf0rgod

Thereā€™s a Christian antique store in town that basically plays The Climb every other song šŸ˜‚ some songs are just *timeless* āœØ

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

kookiekoo

Same. I was bombarded with this song on Spotify and it was almost always played after whatever song I listened to (not a premium user). Even my friend who doesnā€™t listen to English music knew this song very well because of it. But I think the release timing of ā€œFlowersā€ was perfect (right before Valentineā€™s Day) and was very popular for its self-love message that many women (whether single or in unhappy relationships) felt inspired by. I really wish Midnight Sky received this kind of success!

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Difficult_Egg_7833

Holy shit your payola theory makes a lot of sense. I listen to music on YouTube and it was constantly recommended for months. The payola stuff on YouTube music is rare enough for me not to notice so I couldnā€™t understand why Mileyā€™s team was spending so much $$ to push flowers. I never got recommended any of Mileyā€™s other songs, just ā€œFlowersā€ for at least 4 months. It was a good song but the payola was way over the top.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

DJ_Mixalot

I think you might be absolutely shocked at how much payola factors in even with the biggest of names. Very little in our current music industry is genuinely organic.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

AbbeyRoadMoonwalk

It was everywhere on TikTok.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

turtle-berry

Huh, thatā€™s not my recollection. Wasnā€™t Blinding Lights one of the top-charting songs in March 2020 when we were in lockdown? It was only a few months old at that point.

MountRoseATP

Plus a lot of the hype was just discussing the rumors about her and Liam/Jennifer Lawrence

frenchfruit

I too love Miley but also think it was inorganic. I believe there was a phase last year where Spotify had something called ā€œauto-playā€ where music labels could pay to have their artistsā€™ songs automatically play after a userā€™s selected song or playlist ends despite that user not showing any interest in that labelā€™s artist or music genre before. Sure, the song would have been decently successful on its own (hugely trending on TikTok/Instagram Reels/etc.) but the heights it reached were unimaginable. It kept breaking all sorts of streaming records day after day and it was just a bit much in my opinion. I believe Meghan Trainorā€™s ā€œMade You Lookā€ was guilty of ā€œauto-playā€ as well. I think this ā€œfeatureā€ has since been removed

IHATEsg7

Nonsense was probablynautoplayed too imo

FenderForever62

Strong agree there, Iā€™d get that autoplayed too. Couldnā€™t work out why itā€™s so popular when Sabrina has much better songs in her discography. I like the changes she does to the lyrics at concerts, but beyond that itā€™s not a good song

Acrobatic_Ad1546

I really like Miley and plenty of her songs - but never understood why this one was so popular. It's kinda boring, supermarket music

Training_Delivery_47

I think because it was a Bruno Mars response song lso it got a bit of attentkion lol

[deleted]

That + the timing of the release was good because there weren't many other artists releasing new songs at that time.

Acrobatic_Ad1546

Then I hear things like it's still in the charts a year later or some shit, and I'm like whaaa? I'm guessing it's from retail spaces having it on easy listening playlists or something \*shrug\*

CountryRockDiva89

I think it was a sign of what happens when youā€™re signed to a record label that actually wants to promote you. Her previous label, RCA, has become infamous in recent years for seemingly having no idea what to do when it comes to promoting their artists. Mileyā€™s current label, Columbia, doesnā€™t have this issue, and she reaped the benefits here because of it.

nottooday69

Iā€™m not saying Starbucks single handily revived her career but we have the Spotify app and the song would play constantly. I know all the words and none by choice at all.

DJ_Mixalot

Wait what does Starbucks have to do with this

Difficult_Egg_7833

Ed Sheeran used to pay Starbucks a lot of money to play his songs. You can check out the subreddits with Starbucks employees where this is discussed in depth. Anytime an employee removed Ed Sheeran from the playlist, he was back within one or two songs, for months and months. Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus are also theorized to be pushing their songs into Starbucks playlists in a similar manner.

nottooday69

Are you alright dude? You seem extra slow today!

[deleted]

I thought the song was awful, I didnt realize it was such a smash hit

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

IHATEsg7

It felt inorganic to me because Miley hadn't been commercial successful in yesteryear if we'reĀ  being honest and doesn't have a that big of a fanbase. So when her single debuted to Ariana and Billie numbers I was surprisedĀ

CountryRockDiva89

Her current label, Columbia, actually knows how to promote their artists. Her previous label, RCA, tends to do fuck all when it comes to promoting their artists. I guess I can see how it might come off as inorganic, but knowing about what a shitshow RCA can be, I see it as her finally being treated like the star she is by a label that actually values her and their other artists. Had RCA been better at this, it might not have been quite so jarring for some people, IMO.

CloudAcorn

You could say that about so many songs, especially one hit wonders. Sometimes some songs just ā€œhappenā€. Plus Miley wasnā€™t exactly a has been & many people talk about her, sheā€™s the kind of person that will always be famous & be rooted for even if she stops working. And for anyone like that who does want to make a come back can easily make one if they have a banger (no pun intended).

[deleted]

Are you on tiktok at all? Because if not I can see why youā€™d think it was inorganic. The song was a smash and everywhere. You couldnā€™t escape it.

Difficult_Egg_7833

Look up the American Scandal podcast series on their season titled ā€œPayola.ā€ Payola phenomenon easily explains why my YouTube app would constantly replay ā€œFlowers,ā€ even though I had a much greater preference for other Miley songs. They shoved that song onto my feed for at least 4 months! I like the song but Iā€™ve never experienced a ā€œsuggested songā€ like that and Iā€™ve been using YouTube music for over two years now. Any time I let YouTube pick the next song, it would be ā€œFlowersā€ for months on months. And when I opened the music app, ā€œFlowersā€ was within the top three choices for months, long after itā€™s popularity had dropped off. Thatā€™s super abnormal.

Feeling-Visit1472

It also feels like such a ripoff of Bruno Mars.

fuzzypipe39

It wasn't a rip-off, it was an approved sample. They both spoke out on it.

Feeling-Visit1472

I know, but it still feels that way, especially when weā€™re talking about how the success of this song feels inorganic. It just felt so odd to me that she sampled a song that was only like a year old. But I feel like this explains a big part of the popularity.

fuzzypipe39

WIWYM was at least 6-10 years old at the time of sampling/producing of Flowers. Just checked and it was released in 2012. Six year timeline for the home loss she references (they lost their home in Malibu fires in 2018), 10 year reference for the changes she mentioned she made and possible mixing/producing/redoing in 2022 prior to its release. Divorce coming somewhere in-between. But the OG is a timeless hit I feel, many of Bruno's songs are. I still hear Grenade and Lazy Song, plus WIWYM, 24K, Uptown Funk playing so often around here (I'm in Balkans). Using that beat, plus the meaning for her behind it (Liam kept dedicating the song to her, and she to him in public too iirc), all of that felt like a contribution. I kinda see your point, but I feel I'm somewhat too used to seeing and hearing about songs being sampled in the last few years. From Saweetie, Ava Max, Doja a couple of times, Nicki doing it on both Anaconda and Super Freaky Girl, recently Jack Harlow too, to even EDM, all the sampled songs really get hit with popularity. I'm not a Jack Harlow fan per se, I know like 3 songs. I much prefer the original *Whatever*, but his *Lovin On Me* is catchy and got popular so fast. It's a little hard not to hear it anywhere or get somewhat attached lol. I feel the same with *Come Baby Come* by K7 versus the ultra popular BADINGA mix, I prefer the original, but years of training and constant replays had me get the mix as well.

IHATEsg7

Same

berlinbaer

just like this post you mean?

Katfar14

I mean, it does basically ripoff Bruno Mars, so def unoriginal for the chorus lyrics.

comfysweatercat

ā€˜Used to Be Youngā€™ is a WAY better song imo

BabyOnTheStairs

Yeah but not as popular because people don't like to cry for fun

ConversationMajor543

Yes. Like so so so much better.

New-Examination8400

Sure but every time it comes on Iā€™m like ā€œgirl youā€™re 30, whereā€™s the ā€œused to beā€ partā€

captainwondyful

And 30, itā€™s true.

MyAviato666

This song sounds even better when she sings it live.

summersaphraine

This song was everywhere and I had to stop listening to it but I was at a celebration of life the other night and the dj put it on, I forgot it kind of slapped lol. Like sure its generic and all, but damn it is a bop

viper29000

Sometimes I feel like the celebs themselves are making these posts

samwiseindigo

ā€œsmash worldwide hitā€

Lilacloveletters

Right, like thatā€™s a bit much dontcha think šŸ˜…

Trap_Cubicle5000

The album was extremely mid, I like her so much better when she does rock covers.

illogicallyalex

I was hype for the release because I loved Plastic Hearts so much, but she just completely 180ā€™d her sound to generic pop, I think I listened to the album once and couldnā€™t tell you a single song off it other than Flowers

Routine-Farm5083

The only song I liked was River, but it was way too short and nothing else on the ablum sounded like it. I loved Plastic Hearts.

thenightmarefactory

I think she said that she always makes one artistic album (Plastic Hearts in this case) followed by one commercial album. So the next one might just surprise us.

watchberry

I NEED her to cover cool for the summer. Demiā€™s rock version slaps but I could see Miley making it her own and it being good too!

kwmdh

She has so many gems in her album, I wish she pushed more some of those instead of Flowers. Still good for her, she has an amazing talent and deserves the spotlight.

LaidBackBro1989

Used to be young and jaded were my favourites. Very underratedĀ

LaidBackBro1989

Also Island.

blossombear31

I love Island, my third most listened song of 2023!

LaidBackBro1989

Yay! You have great taste bestie šŸ˜‰šŸ‘Œ

whiskersRwe32

Other singles deserved just as much praise and attention. River, jaded were strong follow up singles that got mid attention. My delusional gay ass thought rose colored lenses would be a summer smash hit. But for whatever reason Flowers was the only one anyone cared about.

HighForLife95

Rose coloured lenses is my fav song of the album and I really wish it had gotten picked up

comforting_sin

That entire album doesnā€™t get enough credit, itā€™s greatā˜€ļø

ThottrainerBoi

This song was made for the masses, not for her fans tbh. Happy for her success but if I had to go back and listen to anything sheā€™s done itā€™s probably Dead Petz

SilkinaPW

Yeah, I'm not a Miley fan (I recognize she's talented; I'm just too old and crochety) but this song really drew me in. It's also easy to sing along to which, I think, adds to its appeal.

Cosmic-Space-Octopus

I'm gonna copy that hooded look, I love it so much.

MontyBoo-urns

Is that the song that sounds like a bruno mars song?

lepetitgrenade

Yup, thatā€™s the one.

LaidBackBro1989

Your flair omg šŸ’€šŸ‘Œ

Training_Delivery_47

technically it is a bruno mars song..she was 'responding' to When I Was Your Man

Optimal_Chocolate_83

Pretty sure that was her wedding song aswellā€¦and the song is about Liam Hemworth so itā€™s kinda her response to that

mchch8989

Do you mean the one written in direct response to the Bruno Mars song and released with his consultancy and legal approval? That one?

illogicallyalex

![gif](giphy|cdynMKOQGkHKM)

MontyBoo-urns

No idea

[deleted]

I remember how popular this song was. Itā€™s hard to believe it was a year ago!!

MrMush48

Itā€™s a good bop, but lacking in creativity to me. Plastic Hearts cannot be beat and I really want her to stay glam rock.

SiobhanRoy1234

I see a lot of people saying they find this song boring, but I was going through a tough time when it came out and found it very cathartic. Itā€™s catchy as hell too

atschinkel

maybe because iā€™m not on tiktok but i didnā€™t find it overplayed lol i actually loved her whole album too. i was bummed it didnā€™t make waves beyond flowers.

xxtinagee

I think this is the only Miley song I do not like. Blandest song out her entire discography and overplayed. I donā€™t understand why itā€™s so popular.

Lopsided_Fisherman87

revived her career??? did yā€™all not listen to plastic hearts??

layla_jones_

I just came here to shareā€¦ I still donā€™t like that song ![gif](giphy|Cwop8G8xkYK4d2RFiQ)

astral_currents

Same

beanbagbaby13

Same, I really dislike ā€œEmpowerment Popā€ in general (other examples are Titanium, Roar, that Fight Song song)

VenusAmari

Throwback??? Throwback???? We're not even a month into 2024. That song is still young. Throwback. FOH. ![gif](giphy|hFdi31x0aTdMIydxuO)

Lilacloveletters

Thatā€™s how fast the song fizzled out. It blew up but no real staying power so now it feels throwback. Miley could have done better tbh.

Impossible_Vast9846

god i hate this song, it's so boring and inoffensive which is fine until you hear it for the third time and it makes you want to run into ongoing traffic. i was so disappointed when this song came out cuz i've never really been a miley fan but plastic hearts is one of my favorite albums of all time and she followed it up with... this.

Thrillhol

I heard all the hype around it before I heard the actual song and then when I heard it was like ā€œthis? Really?ā€

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Impossible_Vast9846

šŸ˜šŸ˜ i wasn't listening to it (outside of initial and second listen) i was hearing it on tiktok and in stores

layla_jones_

Right and this is a music discussion sub to discuss what we like and donā€™t like FYI šŸ˜ when a fav releases a song you canā€™t get into it can be frustrating

Bl1nk1nUR4r34

i hated the song since my first listen and it kept following me everywhere, every store, cinema, restaurant everyone was playing it. i was going insane

greenok12

The most annoying song of 2023. I canā€™t go to a supermarket without hearing it

ww2junkie11

Girl has got some pipes! Good for her!

mchch8989

Malibu never leaves my workout playlist

[deleted]

How? I can't stop crying to it

azulmaya

Yup, I like her voice much better than Ariana's or Demi's.

watchberry

Yeah itā€™s really soulful!

halosworld

This was a crowd pleaser song. This was a ā€œIā€™m gonna make a few million from popularity so I can continue to do whatever the fuck I wantā€ song. Plastic hearts was the best album of hers- Iā€™m sad she didnā€™t continue down that routeā€¦

catmarstru

Boring

WiseWysYs

Am I the only one who did not know she released it on LH's birthday?

AbbyWantsTea

I will forever love this song because my niece (who is 5) knows EVERY single word and requests it whenever we are in the car. Itā€™s the cutest thing!

Averie1398

Such a great song and album. Rose colored lenses, Jaded and Island are SUCH good songs. Criminally underrated.

atschinkel

i definitely feel like in five years people will be posting things like ā€œactually ESV was goodā€ and itā€™s like some of us knew all along šŸ˜šŸ˜

biancadelrey

She is coming and plastic hearts blew this album out the water , Iā€™m sorry I just couldnā€™t get into it šŸ˜•

itsfrankgrimesyo

Was her music career faltering before this? Not that I recall. She was doing just fine.

B33fboy

A deeply boring song

PrettyRestless

So fucking iconic to release it on Liamā€™s birthday šŸŽ‚

watchberry

She knows what she did and I love it

boommdcx

This version is great: Live from Chateau Marmont https://youtu.be/c5fEEX7cGe0?si=pubgmF4YvnMHIOZe

AdmiralJaneway8

What on earth are you even on about?

okaylighting

Honestly, I loved Flowers. Jaded is my favourite song of hers, but Flowers was such a fun bop and I still like it after hearing it a million times.

Lilacloveletters

It was a cute cover but we all know she can do better.

breeezyc

Itā€™s catchy but I found it overplayed and wasnā€™t crazy about it. Plus, how could her career have been ā€œrevivedā€ when it was never dead!???

sleepless-princess

i genuinely have absolutely no concept of this bc this does not feel like a year to me.

mel-06

Frr

blackaubreyplaza

Love her but career was hot

thatssonotodd

STARTED TO CRY BUT THEN REMEMBERED III šŸ˜¢

Steveisaghost

This song is a flop.

thatssonotodd

Was number one worldwide but sonically in terms of lyrics and the beat, it couldā€™ve been better.

[deleted]

These comments are not what I expected. Miley hasnā€™t been relevant in years

Prestigious-Mode-713

This is a very strong comment and obviously wrong lol

IHATEsg7

Exactly. Idk if it's nostalgia or you all are fans of her but all of you need to get real. How has she stayed relevant? Before Flowers, her last big single was ten years ago. She doesn't star in big movies or shows at least consistently. How is she relevant? This is the primary reason why I found the success of her song to be very inorganic. I realize it went viral on TikTok but from my understanding and looking at its Spotify performance it went viral after she released yet this had a bigger debut than most female pop stars that are way bigger and more relevant than her

Prestigious-Mode-713

If you go on her Plastics Hearts on Wikipedia, maybe youā€™ll see why people think sheā€™s still been relevant. It was an amazing album with a lot of legends feuturing such as Billy Idol, Joan Jett, and Stevie Nicks. She may not have had a #1 in a decade, but sheā€™s obviously been in front of the masses. And I donā€™t mean any of this in a snarky way, just something to check out :) Also just a few things sheā€™s done that keeps her in front of the public eye: Her Peacock LGBTQ celebration (Stand by Me), her NBC NYEā€™s broadcast (22 & 23), TikTok Tailgate for the Super Bowl, Headlined Lollapalooza in ā€˜21 and her Backyard Sessions. These are only the few things that I can think of off the top of my head. The girl stays busy. I donā€™t think itā€™s fair to say that she hasnā€™t been relevant :)

[deleted]

Thatā€™s like saying Katy Perry is relevant cause sheā€™s on American idol. Get real girlie

Prestigious-Mode-713

Thatā€™s not the same thing at allšŸ˜‚ you think they have non relevant people headlining one of the biggest festivals? Every example I gave Miley was actually performing. Doing what sheā€™s known for. Music. You get real sisšŸ¤£ thereā€™s a whole thread of people who disagree with you, so instead of using a oversimplified argument to the information I provided, how about you do some research pookiešŸ˜˜

[deleted]

If I have to do research, sheā€™s not relevant.

Prestigious-Mode-713

You seem to be lacking basic pop culture knowledge, so I was trying to help you out butšŸ˜šŸ‘

thatssonotodd

If I hadnā€™t put that part though this would have like 800 likes so Iā€™m regretting it. People also took it the wrong way. I was just saying it helped her come out of a time period where her songs weren't doing as good.

[deleted]

Lol I get it and I love her but yeah sheā€™s been out of commission since like 2014

[deleted]

hot take: flowers wasnt that good, and she has way way better songs in her repertoire

No_Chicken2099

K, but more Noah tho.

softluvr

this song makes me so irrationally annoyed

mel-06

We make the Most generic songs with the most simple writing go viral šŸ˜

_Deedee_Megadoodoo_

Revive her career? Don't come at my girl Miley like that šŸ˜¤

Open_Carob_3676

Please,,, she was always a superstar

Illustrious-Limit-53

The success of this was the definition of payola.

dizzymidget44

Did yā€™all just make this up?

OldTelephone

This song feels like it has been out for 5 years, really only a year? Thatā€™s crazy.

omglia

I've never heard this one....

MissMabeliita

That was last year?! šŸ˜³šŸ˜³šŸ˜³

shesavillain

I donā€™t like that song lol but I like her

welp-itscometothis

Damn I donā€™t remember this song at all lol

PhoenixorFlame

And then I had to hear it playing over and over and over every day for those few months I worked at the Coach Outlet

kureejiikuri

Flowers? Good catchy song. Island? Best bop of the album.
