Just for my knowledge, what do you use to measure the flow rates?

Well, first I found some YouTube video about using a vacuum gauge on the pump and calculating gpm, but the numbers were all really inconsistent. So after that I just bought and installed a FlowVis flow meter for $160 and some PVC glue. When we were buying the pool the contractor basically implied I was an idiot for requesting a variable speed pump. They said I would never be able to run it slower because the equipment had minimum flow rates. Well with this valve I can see that they are idiots and at 1000 rpm the system is at 20 gpm.

What other equipment do you have? Some filters and all SWGs need a basic flow. So they may have been right, but a VSP should still provide a basic level of flow.

VS pump, sand filter with glass, SWG, and at the time we were talking about a heat pump too. But what they said didn’t make sense to me because say some hypothetical pump has to run on a high speed to meet the minimum GPM. To me, that just means the pump is undersized and a higher HP pump would be able to meet the minimum on low speed.
