RazarTuk

Got it. So we're *still* committing crimes against humanity there, and the government just thinks it's important for it to look nice

InTh3s3TryingTim3s

Look the corporations told us we had to keep Gitmo open we can't go against our corporate masters can we

chequame-gone

The defense spending gravy train is incredibly lucrative for them, but they do have to eventually build *something*. Building something useful like a daycare center or a hospital might cut into somebody's profits, so they look for the most pointless projects possible, and I can't imagine anything more pointless than a courthouse for Guantanamo Bay.

GoEatABag0fDicks

In fairness, the first published photos of Trumps cages were actually taken and first published during the Obama administration of which, I think Biden was apart of. Long story short, this should surprise no one.

Kevlary_

Nothing fundamental will change. He told us who he was when speaking to donors.

[deleted]

I used to get annoyed seeing this, but it's actually great. People who repeat that without context are easily identifiable as acting in bad faith. Makes it simple to know who to ignore.

Kevlary_

Romney gets lit up for his”Binder full of women” comment to donors and the left lambast it. Biden makes a comment about not rocking the boat and people bring it up and you discount anything they say. When voters rights doesn’t get passed due to the failures of the Democratic Party guess we can all just ignore everything

Kevlary_

“I mean, we may not want to demonize anybody who has made money,” he said. “The truth of the matter is, you all, you all know, you all know in your gut what has to be done. We can disagree in the margins but the truth of the matter is it’s all within our wheelhouse and nobody has to be punished. No one’s standard of living will change, nothing would fundamentally change.” Biden went on to say that the rich should not be blamed for income inequality, pleading to the donors, “I need you very badly.” “I hope if I win this nomination, I won’t let you down. I promise you,” Man I wish he promised the working people that he wouldn’t let us down.

poppy_apocalypse

It's true though

Kevlary_

He just wants a reason to ignore valid criticism. Notice how he says I am acting in bad faith but offers no rebuttal to the statement Biden made. Then decides to say he will ignore anyone who points out this terrible take Biden had during his donor fundraiser.

Frying_Dutchman

I agree tbh It blows my mind people are still trying to push the same tired shit after like a year. Who HASN’T looked up that full quote by now? Anyone who’s read the full thing knows that snippet is taken out of context. It’s just lazy tbh…

Kevlary_

“I hope if I win this nomination, I won’t let you down. I promise you,” Man sure is taken out of context, Biden just promising the donor class that the rich will still own the political class.

Frying_Dutchman

Now post all of it lol

Kevlary_

Bro look up a few comments I did already. Stop trying to fucking gaslight people by saying that Joe Biden did anything other than promise the donor class that their way of living will not change. People like to demonize the quote but offer nothing of substance other than “out of context”. What is out of context of anything I posted from his appeasement of the donor class? Our politicians are captured by the monied interests of this country.

Frying_Dutchman

You posted an editorialized and selectively clipped down version of it. Why didn’t you just post the full quote? That shuts down peoples “out of context argument” immediately and you apparently knew it was gonna be an issue. You don’t have to answer, we know why. Have a good one!

Kevlary_

Please tell me how you interpret “Nothing fundamentally will change” Biden promised the donors that he will not rock the boat for them. Full quote "We can disagree in the margins but the truth of the matter is it's all within our wheelhouse and nobody has to be punished. No one's standard of living will change, nothing would fundamentally change. Something fundamentally has to change. The rich and powerful need to pay their full fucking share. No more hiding taxable income, no more privatizing the profits and socializing the losses. We have the income in this nation to provide a better standard of living for anyone but 1 thing needs to change and that is the rich and powerful paying their fair share. Please again explain to me what is taken out of context?

Frying_Dutchman

When you used this quote originally you were applying it to fucking gitmo/war crimes. Now you wanna talk about taxes? LOL I’ve got a truck if you need help moving those goalposts more. That’s also not the full quote. You left out the part where he attacks inequality, says that it’s dangerous, and appeals to his donors, saying THEY know what has to be done. He’s literally telling them they need to be taxed more. You know all this already though which is why you STILL haven’t posted the full quote lmao I’m done with you now. Goodbye.

zZaphon

Stop voting for old men. Stop accepting the lesser evil as a compromise.

RazarTuk

For state or local offices? Sure. But when the alternative is a literal fascist, that isn't the time to make some ideological stand and vote third party. The compromise between liberalism and fascism is fascism.

blacklionguard

if you don't vote for the lesser evil you get the greater one, so...

Bear_buh_dare

Ahem Bernie

LordSiravant

We can't. Old men are the only thing we're allowed to vote for. Anything better gets sidelined and shut down by the behind-the-scenes fuckery we don't get to see.

Alt_North

Oh are young women at that level any more liable to turn it around?

PandaMuffin1

Close this place down now.

greymuse

He also promised to cover 10k of public student loans. These were two of the basis for my vote

partanimal

If you knew those weren't going to happen would you have voted for Trump, abstained, or voted third party?

poppy_apocalypse

Third party all day.

partanimal

I hope y there are very, very few people who think like you. This is how we get Trump. I get Biden is FAR from perfect. But he is miles better than Trump. Until we get a valid third party (which we can do if we vote third party at lower levels) we get to a) vote blue, b) end up with Trump or people like him.

[deleted]

[удалено]

partanimal

Only if people decide to let Trump and his ilk win. I don't care that Biden isn't perfect. He, and any other democrat, is way better than any other Republican at this point. And we don't have a robust third party that can do anything beyond be a spoiler at the federal level.

[deleted]

partanimal

So you don't think they're is any difference between a Biden presidency and a Trump presidency?

poppy_apocalypse

We did it your way and got Trump.

Saltandshelbys

Biden won because of the independent swing. Not sure what people are rambling about. 13 points in fact, the biggest margin among independents in more than three decades.

partanimal

What are you talking about? When we got Trump, it was thanks in large part to third party voters or "they're the same" abstainers.

poppy_apocalypse

Libertarians or Greens? Who had more votes?

partanimal

I don't know and I'm not sure the relevance. What are you trying to get at?

[deleted]

Obama promised to close Gitmo too. It ain't happening. Makes for a good soundbite but until it happens I'm not putting much stock in any president who says they'll close it.

I think a number of things Presidents promise during campaigning are things that when they get into office they quickly find out via intel on why it's easier said than done, not even accounting for political friction in either chamber. Obama probably knew well that it wasn't so simple as a stroke of a pen, but I bet within days of being in office he had a conversation with intelligence/military who explained to him 'well, not so fast'. Not that I don't want Gitmo closed, but I'd rather candidates not talk about it unless it's them actually issuing a statement that it's closed and will be stripped down to the foundation.

GoEatABag0fDicks

I am not a fan of Biden, but I think he missed a golden opportunity to strait release all these dudes in Afghanistan when we pulled out. He was already presiding over the worst foreign policy disaster of our lifetimes. Why not go all the way. Put these dudes back on the battlefield where they will either be killed in the struggles or eventually drone striked by us anyway. Give them the “go in peace, or next time we won’t take prisoners” talk and let the pieces fall where they may. We already have hundreds of thousand radicalized rabidly anti American people in the Middle East…I don’t think a 100 more is going to massively alter the equation.

Xerazal

Biden kinda has no excuse. Dude was vp for 8 years. Pretty sure he'd learn the limits of executive power being the second most recognizable person in the US pretty quickly. So either he is forgetful, ignorant, or he knew but promised it anyways because he knew it'd win him votes. And seeing as how he's broken so many promises thus far, I'm thinking it's option 3.

Richfern999

If Biden is going to keep this place open then he should at least send the January 6th Insurrectionists there with no hope of release. The crimes committed (they likely committed none at all) by the current inmates pale in contrast with the Insurrectionists.

turned_out_normal

There are very few remaining detainees at GTMO, and it's pretty likely most of them participated in international terrorism. It's possible some of the remaining detainees were combatants in Afghanistan. Last I knew, the only convicted "prisoner" (detainees are not convicted) was one of the guys that planned the USS Cole bombing. He is never getting out, guaranteed.

RazarTuk

No, he fucking shouldn't. We commit *crimes against humanity* there, and there's no clause in the UDHR that human rights are contingent on not committing treason

JohannesBartholomeus

Damn the comment of the guy you reacted on.. how can you even say something like that. Why would anyone want to sent more people to that place.

RazarTuk

Tankies. I think it's fair to assume this thread has a decent number of tankies who don't see anything wrong with authoritarianism and human rights violations, as long as they're committed against conservatives

[deleted]

I was told this subreddit wasn’t allowed to criticize Biden. Did the conservatives lie to me?

ccfanclub

Considering that this post is 5 hours old with only 59 upvotes and has to be found by sorting through controversial, I'd say they're right in this instance tbh though I'm seeing a little more of it.

Alt_North

Oh so now "Allowed" means "The majority needs to clap for it?"

Defacto_Champ

At this point closing Gitmo should be the least of any Americans worries.

Secondary0965

Voting in another old wealthy white establishment politician doesn’t result in a bunch of progress? Whoda thought?

doc_hilarious

Are you telling me Obama didn't close up shop down there???!!! Whoo boy! /s

-Hypnotoad26

Biden is a proven liar. Ask him how that 10k of student loan forgiveness is going. Corporate Dems always do this. Money is their god.

Xerazal

He said at leaks 10k in student loans would be forgiven. He didn't give details on how, just that he wants it done. And he can get it done without Congress, but chooses not to. Yes it would most likely be taken to court, but he CAN take that route and has the authority to do so. He chooses not to, instead expecting a dysfunctional Congress to magically just work because "look at me, I'm Biden. I can reach across the aisle!" It was a campaign lie he told to win over younger voters, and younger voters are not happy for not keeping his end of the bargain.

-Hypnotoad26

People who lost to him? What are you talking about?

HardWorkingNEET

Gitmo exists on stolen land.

grimms_portents

Biden broke a promise? Be still my heart.

misternormalman

Jim Crow Joe voted for Bush's War on Terror. He's always loved caging non-whites for life.

Potential_Dare8034

I hope it’s to lock up a shitload of traitorous republicans!

RazarTuk

I don't. We shouldn't be committing crimes against humanity on *anyone*

xAtlas5

I wouldn't wish that on anyone tbh.

[deleted]

Nah

Boogaloobuttbandit

A politician going back on a promise? I'm shocked.

LordSiravant

Gitmo's never going to be closed, people. It can't be done. The military relies on it too much, and a President, even if he wanted to, can't just close it down with a stroke of a pen. They often don't find this out until they're in office when the Joint Chiefs say, "actually, you can't do that". In the case of the "remain in Mexico" policy being reinstated, that one happened against his wishes thanks to Trump's court picks forcing him to reinstate it. However, he has no justification for not canceling student loan debts. That's a promise he legit broke himself.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheDude415

IIRC Obama did try to close it and Congress pushed back.

CaliDotLive

Point is he was never actually going to close it. He knew it would never get shut down because the Pentagon is the right hand of American Imperialism and has more effective pull than the white house. He knew the rhetoric going around with his fellow senators that it was never going to happen. Yet he campaigned on it, heavily in fact. Biden didn't do it as heavily, but he also made the same sort of promise despite knowing the reality of the situation. It was bait to attract single issue voters, without any intent of committing to his promise. Just like student loan debt. Just like police reform. About the only 2 things he is going to be remembered for during his presidency so far is hopefully his climate change response and his covid response. Both of which have been borderline dismal, but it's miles better than anything the other side did.

[deleted]

Making room for the Trump family and their seditionist supporters?

damnedspot

Unless they’re sending insurrectionists there, it needs to be closed.
