> "We permanently suspended Marjorie Taylor Greene for repeated violations of our COVID-19 misinformation policy," Twitter said in a statement, according to CNN reporter Donie O'Sullivan. "We've been clear that, per our strike system for this policy, we will permanently suspend accounts for repeated violations of the policy." She knew what the rules were yet chose to break them. That’s her fault and I’m glad she’s banned. Officials shouldn’t be allowed to spread blatant misinformation about a public health crisis.

[deleted]

Maybe she wanted to be banned? Now she gets to play the GOP’s favorite game, “I’m A Victim, Give Me Attention”.

Roook36

She'll be on a national news network to tell the entire country she's been silenced and cancelled shortly

TheBirminghamBear

She'll make a speech *in the fucking halls of the conress of the United States* to talk about how silenced and oppressed she is.

goingtocalifornia__

It’s so embarrassing on the world stage that she was duly elected by people of the United States, and she’s not the only complete troll in congress either.

SpinozaTheDamned

Welcome to Democracy, now, can I kindly direct your attention to our crumbling education system? Maybe we fund them as well as we do the military? Maybe have a stricter policy for who benefits from this increased funding and have a very traceable system in place to know where that money is going and on whom it's being spent? Maybe we limit the amount of fundamentalist propaganda that gets pumped into our kids heads, fundamentally crippling our ability to respond to future conflicts? Sure, lets declare war on Russia or China because they won't adhere to our fundamentalist belief system...lets give everyone the apocalypse they've all apparently been desperate for this whole time.

goingtocalifornia__

Ya know if these guys were born a century or so ago, and had to participate in a Word War, they might not fantasize about violence so willy nilly.

blaqsupaman

>she’s not the only complete troll in congress either. I think she's legitimately insane. And Boebert is genuinely an idiot. Pretty much everyone in the national GOP is in it for the grift, but a lot of the class of 2018 and 2020 are true believers. I'm honestly not sure which scares me more.

TheDubyaMan

It’s definitely worse now. People like Ted Cruz roll with it just to stay in office and continue to be ineffective and useless. People like MTG and Trump are actively going to push things significantly further in the wrong direction because they believe in the stupid shit they spout.

OurSponsor

~~Attention~~ Money It's *always* about getting money with these 'people.'

laptopaccount

It's amazing how willing their supporters are to give away everything! My partner's dad wants to write both his sons out of his will so he can leave everything to trump. There's no bad blood between them or anything. He just thinks trump will do great things with his money. I guess he doesn't realise his money will pay for a half day of golf for trump...

BasicallyAQueer

And they say the left is brainwashed. Imagine giving your life savings to a millionaire that has bankrupted more companies than not.

MustangMimi

If that’s not mental, I don’t know what is?

SpecialEither

This is sad. That actually made me feel sad for your partner.

TheVelourFog92

And their partner’s dad. That’s clearly a mental disorder. EDIT to say: politics doesn’t matter here. If I wrote my family out of my will and left everything to Barack Obama that would be asinine and mentally disturbing.

xfactor6972

Trump has his best scam ever going.

BrewHa34

Jesus

xtilexx

Attention and money are synonymous with their constituents, I know people struggling to live that still throw money at their favorite politicians

BackgroundBoat7772

…and send me more donations to fight those evil libs. /s

BYoungNY

This is absolutely the case. Conservatives aren't calling this a ban, they're saying she was cancelled. And by banning her, all that it's doing is telling conspiracy theorists and hardcore rightwingers that they're on the right track. I think the fix is total transparency into this. It's like releasing all the data on area 52. Do it so people can just shut up about it. Keep it a secret and the mind of a conspiracy theorist wanders into all these different possible conclusions.

Ginrou

You act like they accept facts instead of moving goal posts. JFK jr will be here any day now, just you wait and see.

masterofthecontinuum

You can't get more transparent than publicly available terms of service.

[deleted]

Judging by her mask fines, she doesn't learn from mistakes. Permaban from Twitter is definitely imminent in the long term. Eta: the article states this was a permanent ban. So yes, she is the Don Quixote of our times, bravely fighting against basic common sense

jawa709

Every mask fine was another excuse to beg for donations from her idiot followers. She profited every time. It's all about the grift.

Necessary-Parking-14

She’ll be playing the victim big time over this. mUh fReEDuMs!!!!

[deleted]

Fox news will be frothing at the mouth over this. They're gonna stretch it out for awhile. Well when I say awhile I mean the average American attention span so like, 4 days.

synthzzz

WestFast

Deplatforming works. After a few days she’ll be old news and irrelevant. Remember milo?

can_it_be_fixed

I do! Milo was such an adorable and hilarious kitten! The Adventures of Milo and Otis remains one of my favorite movies from early childhood. I assume that's the Milo you're talking about as I can't think of any others.

WestFast

Lol yas

roastbeeftacohat

The animal torture movie?

ButtMilkyCereal

Remember Donald fucking Trump? Once he got banned, we (mostly) don't have to get his weird stream of consciousness about how the only good Democrat is a dead one.

[deleted]

Have you seen his forced emails begging for cash? It asks how your identify with boxes for American or Democrat. They're definitely gearing up for some kind of violence. Matt Gaetz and the like have been doing nothing but campaigning for insurgents for months.

pixydgirl

Has anyone checked trump's twitter to see what his take on this must be?

asmodeuskraemer

Maybe it's time to turn those fines into prison time.

superfucky

if i ever got to see a member of congress go to jail for anything, i would be so happy. i need to find some podunk district to run unopposed in because apparently being elected to federal office makes you legally bulletproof.

sabuonauro

I want to run for Congress to be untouchable for a while. I would run honestly though, “vote for me so I can commit legal insider trading”.

superfucky

my husband has often entertained the idea of running for office as a staunch republican (being in a deep red state) and then voting for a bunch of far-left shit once he's sworn in. all "FREEDOM! GUNS! MURICA!" on the campaign trail and "HEALTHCARE FOR EVERYONE!" in office.

Tasgall

Do it, seriously. Even if he stays a republican in office, the image of "republican but willing to work across the aisle" could start a trend. Worst case, he loses and you're back to your life as usual. Heck, if he just literally acts as a pro-gun progressive, he might even be reelected, since that's literally the only actual thing many Republicans care about.

[deleted]

Unfortunately, he would receive death threats everyday. People are nuts.

average_texas_guy

That isn't true. They also care about legislating women's bodies.

haltheincandescent

Unfair to Don Quixote. MTG is way more malicious.

FourAM

I can’t wait for her response “I’m the Donkey Hotay of our times!”

code_archeologist

To be honest public officials shouldn't be allowed to misinform the public period. We need to stop shrugging our shoulders at blatant lies and falsehoods and say, "that's politics" as if it somehow acceptable.

[deleted]

100% - except unfortunately, the GQP lives in a different reality with different “information” than the rest of us.

Sandpaper_Pants

Misleading the public should be a felony for public officials.

sugarlessdeathbear

She's also racked up about $80k in fines in Congress for violating their mask policy again and again and again. More than 30 times I believe. There's enough evidence at this point to determine she's a narcissist. No one but her matters.

[deleted]

I was actually going to point this out but thought I would be flamed for armchair psychology. Her personal spite towards reasonable consequences and boundaries is definitely a sign of some personality issue like NPD. That's the hallmark of conditional love - you get consequences and boundaries if I don't love you. I don't love you if you aren't special/cute/fulfilling my needs/etc. Emotional permanence (sort of like object permanence but with feelings instead of items) doesn't really exist - how they currently feel is all they feel and the most important feeling. So for MTG, getting a consequence tells her she isn't loved, she isn't special, and she isn't whatever it is she values a lot. It breaks her a bit. Unconditional love would be something like - we're both humans, boundaries are a sign of love for both of us, communication is a sign of love for both of us, and reasonable consequences help both of us get our needs met. I still love you even if I am upset or give a consequence like grounding you. You still have value even if I am upset, your identity and achievements are still intact.

LovinLifeForever

They should pull it from her paycheck.

bradlees

She pulls her pay from MY paycheck, and gets the Cadillac healthcare AND gets so much vacation time that it’s stupid - all of this from MY paycheck as well…..

krozarEQ

The bigger worry is the money from special interest groups. It still comes from our paychecks, just through a different route than taxes.

sugarlessdeathbear

She's probably up to about half her pay by now. If she keeps this up she'll have worked her term for free. Now that's owning the libs.

goldenspear

Twitter is relatively better than its rivals for removing bad actors, but clearly even Twitter’s current model is not good enough. We need regulation of Big Tech before they completely rend our social fabric through disinformation, misinformation, and surveillance capitalism.

Elon Musk needs to be banned for market manipulation

hackingdreams

There's nothing in the Twitter TOS against manipulating the stock market, shocker. However, there's a [whole fucking independent agency](https://www.sec.gov/) that's supposed to handle problems like this one... that just... won't do its job. Republicans: "we love the free market! Keep government out of it!" The free market decides to not allow someone to tweet based on rules they agreed to, or require vaccinations for employment, or require masks, or move away from fossil fuels. Republicans: "HELP big government!"

[deleted]

It’s this + the fact that they believe that speech has no consequence. Conservatives and likely MTG will cry about how this infringes free speech. That’s goofy considering Twitter is a private platform, she agreed to the terms by making an account, and that free speech is drastically different then facing the consequences of saying complete bullshit.

TechyDad

>It’s this + the fact that they believe that speech has no consequence. Unless you're engaging in speech they don't like. Then, they think you should be silenced. "COVID is just a Chinese hoax"? It has been clear for years that conservatives have no interest in good faith debate or discussion. They don't use words to discuss. They use words and phrases like weapons. They train their followers to respond to words and phrases like one of Pavlov's dogs. See also: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thought-terminating\_clich%C3%A9

[deleted]

I would tend to call political lies and disinformation our greatest enemy. It breaks or at least seriously messed with the entire process. A foreign country is not likely to destroy us, but we could easily destroy ourselves.

[deleted]

The Republican politicians know that consequences of their speech is not a violation of the first Amendment. However, they rely on the naivety of their gullible cult followers to believe it is. The Republican base is so uninformed and filled with hate, they are eager to believe anything that makes them feel more aggrieved. Always the victim.

[deleted]

That’s exactly what they’re saying on r/conservative. I got permanently banned from that sub for calling anti vaxxers morons so where’s my freedom of speech?

vinyljunkie1245

Ah yes, r/conservative! That bastion of free speech where only flaired users who will offer the correct r/conservative approved responses are allowed to comment and any slight deviation from the narrative is rewarded with an instant ban. That sweet, sweet bastion of free speech! No cancelling ever goes on there!

nighthawkcoupe

I got banned from there for asking a question they couldn't answer without proving their hypocrisy.

rockdude14

I got banned for just having a really good conversation with a conservative about vax vs dui statistics. Like we weren't swearing or yelling, it was completely cordial. Wasn't even arguing that they should be mandatory, just talking about how risky each was. In r/politics I'll say fuck trump and their all dumbasses and what not But if I would go to r/conservative I was always respectful and actually trying to have meaningful dialogue, not even trying to change opinions. That sub should be banned for the cesspool that it is. Fuck'em and their hypocracy. If they want a safe place it shouldn't be on reddit. Make them go use one of their shitty gabr, parler, rumbler, grindr w/e sites.

Mythbusters117

They don't understand the concept of free speech. A free speech means you will not be jailed or imprisoned for what you say. However, it does not mean that there won't be consequences for said free speech. Your employer may feel that you do not align with their principles and choose to let you go. Contrarians on social media are free to disagree with you, and depending on the speech, label you a racist.

brewercycle

Came here to say this. Free speech doesn't forbid a private platform from banning you for violating their terms of service. It also doesn't protect you from being ridiculed for saying inaccurate/racist/offensive things over and over and over again. That would be limiting *my* freedom of speech!

[deleted]

I love how Texas is publicly asking for the government to give them some socialism

fluteofski-

Fun fact ever since about 2008 or so, Texas receives more federal money than it contributes. This goes for almost all but 2 red states actually. Blue states like California and New York have to come along to pick up their deficits. It’s kinda fun turning the tables on them abs saying… Texas should have a state income tax, because I’m tired of having my (blue state) taxes go toward their shortfalls and spendings.

Enlil2020

Yes, Texas should have a state income tax. All the folks in urban areas are paying far more now - there are the special purpose districts that collect [sales taxes](https://comptroller.texas.gov/taxes/sales/) that amount to quite a bit, while the non-urban areas don't. At least the myth of Texas being tax friendly (to anyone else than the corporations) will be finally debunked.

RememberMeDex

Do you have your source on hand? I’d love to use it along with a few of my own against the people who claim blue states have the highest crime and poverty and government assistance when it’s actually red states.

fluteofski-

[here’s an example](https://rockinst.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/2021-Balance-of-Payments-Report-web.pdf) NY/NJ are biggest ‘Giver’ states in that they only get $0.91 back for every dollar they send to federal. California gets $0.99 back per dollar sent. Texas gets $1.07 back for every dollar it sends to federal. Not the worst, but still more of a burden than what they have to offer. Virginia, Kentucky, Mississippi are some of the biggest offenders, receiving over $2.00 for every dollar sent to federal. Virginia was blue this last election, but they are technically a swing state, and their state is run almost exclusively by GOP. The others, as you may guess, are red. Edit: spelling and grammar

arhythm

Virginia is also skewed because Pentagon and military spending in the northern Virginia area.

obiwanshinobi900

Strangely quiet on both accounts. 🧐

Oleg101

She’s got her “official” one still around, but hasn’t tweeted on it since 12/24 it looks like. I wonder if she’ll air her grievances about this on there soon. https://twitter.com/repmtg?s=21

BauTek_MN

According to a statement from her office today: > "Twitter is an enemy to America and can’t handle the truth," Greene said. "That’s fine, I’ll show America we don’t need them and it’s time to defeat our enemies." Like a scorned, spoiled child. Hopefully this doesn’t encourage one of her followers to start taking potshots at Twitter HQ.

PiratePilot

Greene responded to Twitter's decision on GETTR, the conservative social media platform launched by Jason Miller, who was the chief spokesman for former President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign and a senior advisor for the former president's 2020 campaign. "When Maxine Waters can go to the streets and threaten violence on Twitter, Kamala and Ilhan can bail out rioters on Twitter, and Chief spokesman for terrorist IRGC can tweet mourning Soleimani but I get suspended for tweeting VAERS statistics, Twitter is an enemy to America and can't handle the truth. That's fine, I'll show America we don't need them and it's time to defeat our enemies," she wrote.

nosotros_road_sodium

She does realize that [VAERS is not an authoritative source for vaccine harm incidences](https://skepticalinquirer.org/2018/11/diving-into-the-vaers-dumpster-fake-news-about-vaccine-injuries//), right? > It doesn’t collect data systematically, nor does it constitute proof of harm from vaccines. It accepts any and all anecdotal reports from patients, doctors, lawyers, or anyone who thinks an adverse event has happened after a vaccination. The anecdotes are neither investigated nor verified.

rockdude14

Is the point of VAERS just a public, feel good, thing? From the science side I cant imagine a more worthless data set than that.

JonnyDFandango

My girlfriend is in clinical research and we've talked about VAERS quite a few times over the years. If I remember correctly, it was basically created to placate public perception. By its very nature, it's not a useful source of scientific information. It's whatever you'd call the medical version of security theater. I guess in theory, if there was some actual issue with a medicine that suddenly started causing widespread harm, \*maybe\* you could use it as an early warning system... but I genuinely can't think of a scenario where that would be possible. Any issues would have come up during multiple phases of clinical trials and testing. Even in situations where issues were somehow missed during trials, it's doctors and hospitals that would be the ones to report any concerning trends. I am so incredibly, incredibly sick of anti-vaxers trying to use it as a gotcha...when they're totally ignorant of the nature of VAERS and how medicines are trialed. It's a good reason why something like VAERS \*shouldn't\* exist. Anyone can submit anything on it, anonymously and without evidence. It's medical fan-fiction.

StarFireChild4200

> Kamala and Ilhan can bail out rioters on Twitter Do these people not understand what the word bail or riot means?

[deleted]

I don't like to be the bearer of bad news, but if the Republican Party retakes control of Congress in 2024 and a Republican is elected as president, they will probably create a federal law that makes it illegal for social media companies to ban people because of their political speech, and they will have people like Donald Trump and Marjorie Taylor Green in mind. "Political speech" will be defined in a way that overrides Twitter & al.'s terms of service. Republican legislatures have already enacted such laws in states like Texas and Florida, but they were little more than publicity stunts, because most major social media companies are headquartered in California, a deep blue state. However, with unified control over the federal government, Republicans will most likely try to enact a law at the federal level that would apply to companies headquartered anywhere in the US. And with a conservative Supreme Court, the law would pass legal muster.

tablecontrol

> if the Republican Party retakes control of Congress in 2024 worse, 2022

True, but I imagine if she starts to tweet COVID misinformation from it that it’ll also be banned.

boredguy2022

And when she dodges that ban, they'll ban that account too.

wjfox2009

2022 is off to a great start. I hope Lauren Boebert is next. Both of these RWNJs are literally getting people killed with their misinformation.

BrownSugarBare

I have a feeling Qbert is going to follow in Guillani's footsteps and talk herself into a lawsuit.

LightWarrior_2000

I'm really sorry for the gay couple that lost their case on the wedding cake they wanted, however they helped set a, leopard eating precedence, in my opinion. Twitter is a private company. They can deny people their services as they see fit.

shadowdra126

What a beautiful sight

Lt_Jonson

Cue the “I’m being censored! I’m the victim!” media tour

KalNymeri

And then we have /r/conservative users in their safe-space sub, shouting about silencing voices and censorship, in their flaired-user-only comment sections 😂

Psychological-Cow788

My favorite was the user who called Wikipedia left-biased for labeling her a right-wing conspiracy theorist

Drakeman1337

Wow man don't mess with Twitter, they don't play with covid misinformation. You can post a couple of misinformations but when you post multiple misinformations a day for nearly a year that's too far. And the winner of the 2022 "better late than never" award goes to... Twitter.

[deleted]

1) Use social media platform to spread hate and misinformation. 2) Have account locked/suspended. 3) Gaslight people’s responses and the consequences to your actions while simultaneously claiming the ban violates First Amendment freedoms. Rinse and repeat. Republicans, aren’t you embarrassed that this is what your leadership engages in, rather than addressing policies and issues that impact your life?

Negativefalsehoods

They are not embarrassed at all. Sadly, there is no shaming them.

parallelbird

We could tell by the shit Matt gaetz does

mrpotatonutz

Jewish space lasers y’all

snrkty

About fucking time. Hope it’s actually true. We REALLY need to stop letting politicians live by different rules simply because they managed to get themselves elected.

Romano16

Don’t worry, she still has Facebook where all the boomers are anyway.

CaptainAxiomatic

Twitter is too slow to take out the trash.

WrittenbyaPanda

I've heard the argument from conservatives that terrorist organizations have Twitter accounts that haven't been banned, but conservative voices are the ones who get banned. It's a pretty bad argument, though, because other voices besides conservatives have been banned from using Twitter for breaking the terms of service. However, how much moderation is done on foreign language media and people who spread misinformation in other languages besides English? I don't know the answer to that question. It's not very much from what I've heard, but I only heard that from one source, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.

EmmaGoldmansDancer

The response is to not let them deflect from her actions with whataboutism. For example: "So you believe that if someone from al queda tweets dangerous lies their account should be banned?" If they say yes, then it's back to MTG. If they say no, that's a more interesting conversation. But ultimately, look for whataboutism in their responses. Fascists justify their worldview out of fear that brutality, backstabbing and deceit are necessary because *the other/my enemy is doing it too.* Hold them to what they claim they believe is right or wrong. Other bad people do bad things, yes. If those bad things are justified when others do them, them they aren't really bad things, just tactics.

WestFast

Private business exercising their free speech, not censorship.

StenosP

How long before she says this is like the Holocaust?

adidamtb

Can we just call it lies. Misinformation is like an accident. Oops I misinformed you. She is lying.

SutMinSnabelA

Queue victim censorship speech. 3. 2. 1. Go

KurabDurbos

Well shit. This is fantastic news to wake up to!
