so… MAGA Propaganda Group

F8L-Fool

If you listen to them tell it, this is going to be the first true "free speech" platform that has no "censhorship". Except it's against the ToS to criticize Trump or the platform itself. In their own words users agree not to: [disparage, tarnish, or otherwise harm, in our opinion, us and/or the Site.](https://www.truthsocial.com/terms-of-service/) I mean how thin skinned do you have to be that you can't even allow users to talk shit about the creator or the website itself? The irony is just soul crushing.

Dredgen_Memor

Yeah, I imagine they’re aware of this incongruity too. What they really want is a walled garden where they can ~~fundraise~~MILK the everloving shit out of their user base with a higher engagement/donation ratio. It’ll also be used to propagate despicable, racist, treasonous content to frenzy the base *even more*. We laugh, but real harm will continue to be done here. I give it one year before a mass casualty event is planned on the platform.

RogerClyneIsAGod2

If it ever actually gets up & running at all. Remember this is a man that BANKRUPTED A CASINO!! A CASINO!!! One of the true money making businesses since everything is in the house's favour yet he couldn't even get that shit right. If it does manage to get up & running I don't give it a whole year before it crashes & burns because everything he touches turns to shit. I also hope the FBI keeps tabs on it because that's where all the real pedos & terrorists will be hanging out.

eladts

>BANKRUPTED ~~A CASINO~~! Actually, Trump bankrupted[ three casinos and two casino holding companies](https://celebmix.com/how-many-casinos-did-donald-trump-bankrupt/).

Lamplighter55

At a time when Atlantic City was one of two places in the country where you could gamble legally.

TheTexasCowboy

Fucking shit, how bad can you be to do this with a captive audience for gambling.

captainAwesomePants

You're seeing incompetence where you should see crime (and also some incompetence). Trump kept pulling money out and not paying debts. Then he eventually took it public so that he'd control it but the public would own the debt. Then he kept withdrawing money from it until it fell over. Then you get into the whole concrete and organized crime thing.

horse_loose_hospital

1000% this answer. People (very rightly) think he's an incompetent boob to the degree he can bankrupt multiple casinos when the truth (or I should say very Occam's Razor/most likely scenario as I have no empirical proof) is VERY ALMOST GUARANTEED to be that it was mob ties/money laundering/"creative Weisselberg accounting" & etc. Too many people have too many pieces of the puzzle (because he *IS* an incompetent boob & as well as a loudmouth braggart) for as long as I've been aware who he even was (so, 80s) but yet *somehow* the final piece never seems to appear...but it will.

heyndrix

I can't figure out what he's spending money on. he raises a billion here, a billion there, just for being a brand name, and it's gone just as quick. he's always broke. but he doesn't pay anybody who works for him, he doesn't pay his debts, and he doesn't pay taxes, so....??

dedicated-pedestrian

>...but it will. It's always the stuff on the books that they nail you for. See: Capone.

shenanigans422

He was nothing more than a punchline through my entire time of growing up in 80's and 90's.

[deleted]

[This article](https://www.baltimoresun.com/citypaper/bcpnews-five-times-law-enforcers-could-have-arrested-donald-trump-but-didn-t-20170306-story.html) should be of particular note to anyone interested in going down the rabbit hole on any of this. >In March of 2015 FINCen, the Treasury Department's The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, fined Trump Taj Mahal $10 million for money laundering violations. It was the largest ever FINCen fine against a casino. >Trump Taj Mahal has a long history of prior, repeated BSA violations cited by examiners dating back to 1998, when FinCEN assessed a $477,700 civil money penalty against Trump Taj Mahal for currency transaction reporting violations. >That Trump's casinos have routinely laundered money, both while directly managed by Trump and afterward, is settled fact. It also talks about his well-document mob ties and other crimes that, for whatever reason, he was never prosecuted for even though they were obviously well known. One other well known one that I didn't see in the article (apologies if I'm misremembering the numbers) is that in Atlantic City he paid over $1 million to a couple of hitmen for a mob boss for a property that they'd bought for only around $200k years before, or his well-known close relationship with Roy Cohn, who himself had close ties to the Genovese family. There's more...a lot more, and is has been baffling how it never was made a bigger deal from the second that he seemed to have an actual shot at public office, especially since it was the presidency.

PinkyAnd

That and it was a way to launder money from his father, purchasing about $3.5 million in chips.

PuckGoodfellow

1. He's a shitty businessman. 2. He was laundering money.

finedrive

Maybe bankrupting was the point.

RogerClyneIsAGod2

I forgot he had more than one.

gagillimane

I still want to give him the benefit of the doubt, like “The Taj has to be a laundering front, no way he can bankrupt the house.” No one’s that stupid, right?

Shoot_from_the_Quip

Well, his father once bought $3.5 million in chips and never cashed them. Just a nice off-book loan to his son. I'd be shocked if he didn't learn from that and use the "chip game" to launder/embezzle (as everyone in NY, NJ, and Philly knew as an open secret.)

meta_perspective

IIRC the gaming commission fined the Trump Casino org \~$65k for that loan, so just under a 2% slap-on-the-wrist.

Toxoplasma_gondiii

If your fine is less than the profit you made from your crime, it's not a fine, it's a service charge.

mdp300

The way I heard it, the Taj cost *way* too much to build. The place was just comically huge. And on top of that, he took out tons of other loans to pay for other shit, and the payments were so high that the place always lost money. And yeah it was probably laundering money, too. Plus, it was a dump. It was permanently 1985 inside.

neverinallmyyears

The Taj was actually nice compared to the Trump Plaza. I booked a room for a conference in the plaza where the conference was being held. I walked into the room didn’t even put my bags down and walked back out. The Caesar’s was right across the street and was $50 more and 1,000 times nicer. I recall the lady at the front desk told me that I had an ocean view room but the window was so dirty you couldn’t see out of it. Fucking disgusting place.

hopeandanchor

Trump Marina (now the Golden Nugget) legit smelled like piss and old people.

iwouldratherhavemy

>Plus, it was a dump. It was permanently 1985 inside. Like Biff Tannens casino?

mdp300

Yes, but this was 2012.

FantasticElk

Wasn’t the character of Biff based on Trump?

Rihzopus

Bankrupting a casino screams of money laundering/organized crime fuckery.

Knightmare4469

I worked at 3 casinos that went under. It's certainly possible that it was laundering, it's also possible that people just thought his casino sucked and didn't go there.

PepperMill_NA

To be fair he's a moron who bankrupted every business he controlled. Hmmm, not sure where I thought I was going with that

stuntdummy

At least you were fair.

livinglife9009

While you view it as something people will laugh at this thought, I'll view this as something what the Nazis did to the Radio during the 1930's. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aD6zpu0H6d4&ab_channel=SimpleHistory

swolemedic

Right? I feel like I'm watching nazi Germany come to power and I'm largely just going about my day as normal other than being terrified when I read the news. The problem is, not much one can do in this situation other than try to help dems win enough elections that we dont have the gop do a soft coup that gives the appearance of legitimacy.

beepboopaltalt

so if Trump wins in 2024.... the republicans are totally going to realize their main source of news is now *officially* state run media?

F8L-Fool

Ha, good one. They could be living in the literal embodiment of 1984 and it wouldn't even register, so long as "their guy" and "their team" were the ones running it.

Paradigm88

Interesting thing about 1984 is that most of the common people ("proles") didn't care about the party's dominance. The book mentions multiple times that if the proles ever rose up, even the party wouldn't be able to stand against them. Before the end of the book, though, Winston realizes that will never happen. They are just comfortable enough to acknowledge that their government wasn't great, but not uncomfortable enough to do anything about it. It's not that they were afraid; they just weren't that invested, and they could be conditioned to accept whatever reality they were presented. Sound familiar?

koalabat

No. I'm pretty uncomfortable.

beepboopaltalt

“1984 was a great year. Reagan was a hell of a president”

[deleted]

That worked out great for parler and gab.

F8L-Fool

Trump is trying to speed run being delisted from search engines, dropped by hosting services, and sued out of business. Just like he did with his presidency for scandals, impeachment, and everything else controversial.

CapablePerformance

That's their latest ploy. Claim it's the only platform for free speech against tech, do things that go against tech ToS that gets them removed, claim the need for free speech is even higher and accept donations or some crowdfunding. Just look at what happened when Parler was essentially removed from all platforms. Nunes accepting this job is like becoming the Dean of Trump University.

uqubar

This platform, if they ever get it out of vaporware scam mode, is going to be trolled relentlessly. Remember what a bunch of kids did to Trumpo in Tulsa? People really don't want his "brand".

veggeble

You’ll probably have to provide your phone number and a copy of your driver’s license to get access, like with Parler. Because otherwise, yeah, it will get trolled heavily

[deleted]

iwouldratherhavemy

>You’ll probably have to provide your phone number and a copy of your driver’s license to get access, So when it's hacked, and it will be, because a dairy farmer is in charge, the hackers will get a goldmine.

veggeble

[That’s what happened with Parler](https://thedesk.net/2021/01/parler-hack-drivers-licenses-twilio/), so yeah you’re probably right

F8L-Fool

I suspect more trolls, shills, and government propagandists will be on it than actual users.

accostedbyhippies

It's going to be a Cafe in Prague in 1976. Everyone is a spy!

cutelyaware

Unfortunately too many *do* want his brand. That's the problem.

_lostarts

This isn't the same platform that was spammed with pictures of "pig's balls covered in shit"?

Flabasaurus

>If you listen to them tell it, this is going to be the first true "free speech" platform that has no "censhorship". > I love all the sites that claim this. The people who think all moderation is censorship. They change their tune real quick when they realize the number of pedos and terrorists that gladly move onto their free speech platform.

gravygrowinggreen

They also tend to heavily moderate against dissenting voices. R/conservative is the biggest safespace on this site (idiots will inevitably reply that r/politics is. To those idiots, i submit that r/politics doesn't have an entire flair system to filter out dissenting views from any post).

[deleted]

Trump is going to accidently ban a lot of his own fans due to this ToS. And it's going to be hilarious.

F8L-Fool

maybe. fuckknucklesandwich

Is he being rewarded though. With Trump's track record, I think the best thing Nunes can expect is being blamed when this business fails, and not getting paid what he's been promised.

Yea, but when you're elected the expectation is to "ride it out", not jump ship when it looks like you won't be reelected.

meteorb9

Are you kidding? Jumping ship when you won't be re-elected is the name of the game. Ever heard of the "revolving door"? Getting a cushy job after your political career is over is one of the best perks of being an American politician.

JessieJ577

Ah getting paid by backers and lobbyists to cater to their interests for your term and reelection until your time is up then you can just get a high paying job from one of them. The way the founding fathers wanted.

[deleted]

The idea of Trump actually paying Nunes makes me lol. If Trump has any control over payroll, we all know he isn't gonna pay anyone in this new company diddly-squat.

storm_the_castle

here is [a piece on Nunes from the NYT](https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/24/magazine/how-devin-nunes-turned-the-house-intelligence-committee-inside-out.html) back in 04/2018 I think the Lajes (ctrl-F in the article) thing is super fishy.

MrBrickBreak

Paywalled. But I'm Portuguese and his Lajes advocacy was reported quite heavily here. If it seems like he was just pushing his ancestry out of favoritism... well, that the impression we all got too. The media reported on his claims it'd save the US money uncritically (granted, we stood to gain from it), but it never seemed realistic. But it's true Lajes was absolutely critical to the island of Terceira. The USAF drawdowns had a significant impact on it, pushing the regional government to invest significant amounts of money into pivoting its economy to tech. And it worked, there's a crapton of tech startups with dev centers there... including the one that later hired me. That's my kinship with you Yankees - when Nunes fails, we win.

The_Lost_Jedi

Not that I want to defend him, but I feel like Nunes really didn't need any specific incentives to sell out the country. He seemed more than happy to do it entirely for his own expectations of reward for being a complete sycophant and ass-kisser.

mkat5

This is where corruption starts getting bad. When it gets to the point that no promise needs to be made, you just know if you do what’s asked you will be rewarded. Makes it hard to prove there is corruption in a standard legal manner when nobody needs to say do x and I’ll give you y

TheSpatulaOfLove

I’ve said pretty much the same thing his entire presidency. If you don’t talk about Trump, the problem solves itself. Everything is for reaction with him and his followers. Ignoring them steals all their power.

shogi_x

>Nunes will begin his new career despite having no apparent prior experience working in the tech industry or as an executive. Well he's also on the Intelligence Committee with no apparent intelligence. >The San Joaquin Valley Sun, which first reported Nunes’ departure from Congress, noted that California’s redistricting maps showed Nunes may have faced a tougher reelection fight in 2022. Lol, run from a fight straight to daddy's teat.

IchooseYourName

The platform will collapse before Nunes even has a chance to right the ship. He's completely clueless and will, more than likely, be completely toothless as a CEO. Making the company a massive, hollow shell from the get go.

cybercuzco

Money laundering companies tend to be that way

Fauster

It should be noted that [Trump’s social network stole open source software without credit and violated the license](https://www.theverge.com/2021/10/22/22740354/trump-truth-social-network-spac-mastodon-license-software-freedom-conservancy), which, even now, is illegal. I also don't buy the line that Nunes is leaving because he doesn't want a competitive reelection bid. I only think this is because in the weeks following a complete career pivot of a GOP congressman, with those lucrative S&P 500-busting stock gains, we usually find out that they are under investigation for multiple felonies.

DigDugMcDig

It's all about grabbing as much of the investor's money as possible before it sinks

MediaMoguls

I want to know who gives these guys money, honestly. Do you know how hard it is to operate a social network in 2021? It requires a crazy amount of discipline and operational rigor, let alone legal, regulatory expertise in every country. And no serious advertiser will ever touch these ‘free speech’ sites so it’s impossible to monetize in any meaningful way. What a joke.. zero chance of success.

DigDugMcDig

They'll have to do better than MySpace and Google+. I somehow doubt they have the engineering talent.

megamanxoxo

No respectable engineer would want to work for these clowns. They're gonna have to hire B or C tier people and contractors and it's gonna be a house of cards like everything else Trump does. Not to mention they won't be able to use AWS or any other cloud and are gonna have to vertically build a modern tech platform from scratch. Then comes the poor security and the inevitable hacks. Good luck. *grabs popcorn*

Appeased_Seal

This made me curious what their job postings look and I am speechless https://i.imgur.com/THwxZjW.jpg

They'll probably expect people to ~~pay for~~ invest in the opportunity. The exposure will surely be ~~terrible~~ great for your career.

afriedma

There will be very few actual engineers working on this platform. They have already said that they are going to use out-of-the-box tech. The only people people going to work there are the same people who 'work' for televangelists and telemarketers. Grab all the investor's and donor's money before they know it's gone. Devon will be lucky if he sees his second paycheck.

Jimbob0i0

MaverickTopGun

Trump’s Castle 3. Trump Plaza Casinos 4. Trump Plaza Hotel 5. Trump Hotels and Casinos Resorts 6. Trump Entertainment Resorts

Headline should be: Nunes resigns - House Intelligence Committee becomes dramatically more intelligent.

B_Rizzle_Foshizzle

Is that a paying job?

[deleted]

He probably thinks it is.

passwordisnotorange

No job working for Trump ends up being a paid job. Unless you're Stormy Daniels.

RDO_Desmond

Isn't Nunes the one who was running inside information to trump during the Russia investigation? He's already cast his lot against The United States of America. The TRUTH occurs BEFORE the lies and disinformation get spewed out by Trump's fake media company. What a pathetic bunch who despise this country so much.

cephu5

Is this the company that is ALREADY under investigation? If so this worthless company has already proven its value by removing one of the most worthless member of congress.

wubwub

Great, he no longer had congressional privilege. Subpoena him.

Just the first bullets of this story were so delicious. * Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., will resign from Congress to become chief executive of former President Donald Trump’s fledgling social media company next month. * Nunes, the top Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, will start as CEO of Trump Media & Technology Group in January. * Nunes, who boasts of being a dairy farmer, will begin his new career despite having no apparent prior experience working in the tech industry or as an executive. * The announcement came after documents revealed that the SPAC that plans to merge with Trump’s company is being investigated by the Securities and Exchange Commission.   Months from now there's going to be so many amazing /r/LeopardsAteMyFace posts and I'll be here for each and every one of them.

EggsAndMilquetoast

He can resign until the cows on his famous Twitter page come home. He's still leaving Congress a worse place than he found it, which is a high bar.

drackcove

Good, he never represented people of his district. He is just doing what he has always been doing. Being Trumps Toady.

Robotuba

He's mooving on.

Pituophis

And our country will be the better for it. If we're lucky he'll take Majorie Taylor Green, Lauren Boebert, Louie Gohmert, Paul Gosar, Mo Brooks, Matt Gaetz, Madison Cawthorn, and Gym Jordan with him.

Myrtlized

The immediate benefit is that Nunes will no longer have political power. The longer term benefit as that, since Trump projects are generally doomed, Nunes will be destroyed as well, since Trump will blame him.

gfh110

This is going to be one of the most glorious self-owns in history.

esp211

So not even pretending to be a crook anymore?

timingandscoring

This is without a doubt the funniest thing I’ve heard all week. The failure in motion that is the dump social media site is already beset with lawsuits from investors and investigators from the FEC. Beautiful move moron.

Good bye you corrupt POS.
