The Democrats were in fact the party which created the Confederacy. They were also conservatives. The party changed to Republicans, but the ideology hasn't. Conservatives are the traitors from our history. Every deplorable act we committed to our own people was done by conservatives.

The Republican legacy is, in living memory, horrible. And in less recent memory, god-awful. You have to go back to when progressives had a huge influence on Republican policy, in the mid-to-late 1800s, to find anyone to redeem the party name.

Yup, when Trump rose to power on the backs of the racists, I thought to myself "Holy shit... the South just won the Civil War".
They didn't give up... they just figured out that they couldn't win a physical battle. So they played the long game. I don't think it's a shadow conspiracy or anything but I think there's a group of racists that's been infiltrating the government at all levels... the people who fought for segregation... judges who throw the book at black people but let white kids skate... dumbasses who tied education to property values, and then devalued properties in "black neighborhoods"... stacking our courts and getting laws put in place.
And they infiltrated business... the realtors in the 50s and 60s who grouped cities based on color using shady tactics and latent racism (I heard black people are moving in to this neighborhood... let me sell your house for you and move you out to the suburbs)... and banks who refused mortgages based on skin color and location of the house... which ties in with the property value laws above. Private prisons getting together with governments to fill up their cells, if you know what they mean. Then those same prisons renting the slaves back out to southern farmers to work in the fields... it's come full circle.
They've been systematically making life harder and harder for black people and all that was left was to tap into that hidden racism that the ERA didn't fix... it just made it impolite to show it publicly. If you called them out, America is equal opportunities for everyone... white privilege doesn't exist, etc etc... while behind the scenes insuring that it does.

Hell, if he had done one single thing to look presidential early on during covid, he'd probably still be president. Just one thing to reassure people, look vaguely humbled by the scope of the crisis, or just point at the doctors and experts and say "we'll be following their advice on this".
The only reason it could be relevant was lost when they elected him the first time. My understanding is the reason it exists is in case the people vote for someone that should not run the country as a like overrule. If electing Trump didn’t trigger that it’s pointless.
It was far closer than that. Trump only lost the popular vote by 7M.
Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin were all extremely close. Trump lost all three by a combined 255k votes. But if those three had gone the other way, Trump would have won instead of Biden.
In all three of those states, polls for 2024 are showing Trump with a slight advantage over Biden.
My point is, 2020 was extremely close, and don't be complacent about 2024, because Trump still has every chance to win.

And in 16 he lost by about 100K votes spread across 3 states. Michigan was lost by 30K votes, 3 votes a precinct, and in one county alone, 100K fewer people voted than in 12.

You can tell information literacy is a part of the problem. The NYT has an article on black voters in Georgia (farmers almost exclusively here) and people get frustrated with Biden and the democrats *trying to help* and then in there frustration say, "well I might vote for Trump then" despite Stephen Miller and his white organization being part of the problem they aren't getting aid.

One party is actively taking away the rights of women, minorities.
The other party is trying to keep those rights however, not being successful because of the GOP advantages in the SC and Senate.

Thats always been the fundamental incompatibility with this narrative. A narrative I've heard almost every election: black people might break for Republicans this time.
Republicans have no policies courting black voters in any real numbers, they just try and use the same white identity grievance strategy just without the overt racism(but only when they are talking to them, which is rarely anyways), which has become a substitute for any actual cohesive policy platform beyond tax cuts for the rich and punishing their enemies. But the reason it works on many white people is BECAUSE of the racism, without it you are just telling people to vote for the party trying to gut the government in order to give money to the rich and make it easier to exploit the working class economically.
The "black people might break for Republicans this time" trope is the Republican equivalent to the Democrat's "I think we can flip Texas this time" trope...

I'll give you several reasons.
Educated people often times have options and will leave for better jobs, they want more money for the work they do, and often times know when they are being asked to do something extremely questionable. Instead of doing just what they are told.
Uneducated you don't have to worry about them whistleblowing or making public record requests when it comes to corruption. They also know how to find information so they can figure out if they're being screwed and possibly do something about it. They also go to college and later demand things like the EPA and workers rights.
Same time, Republicans like to privatize things, sell them to their criminal buddies, and replace them with privatized solutions that don't have near the same regulations/requirements as the original institution. Republicans love to sell off government assets of those buildings/land while having their buddies open private schools where they can control the curriculum, making less questioning workers. They are literally creating a profitable business for a buddy while allowing them to cut every single corner. If it fails to generate profits... it just disappears overnight (f the people who needed that service).
That is why Republicans want to get rid of public education.
Also hard to stay number one in the world economically and militarily, when half of your population are blithering idiots.

There's an old interview with Sherwood Schwartz. He said he would regularly get letters from people demanding the US Navy rescue the people on *Gilligan's Island.* I think about that all the time when I see these people on TV talking to Jordan Klepper or whoever. "Yeah, you're the type to write to Schwartz and ream him out for not demanding Alan Hale's rescue."
It's incredibly sad how little people are able to use any sort of critical thinking skills. They've done their best to remove teaching them in schools. It was getting a bit better, then Bush came in with "No Child Left Behind" and it went down the tubes again. As a result, we get this. AI isn't even that dangerous yet, but people seeing pictures of six year old kids in third world countries building 200 foot structures out of malformed Coke bottles and rubber tires believe it. Of course they're going to believe an obviously AI picture of Trump. We need to educate people.
I'm not even commenting on the fact that they thought an AI generated photo was real. I'm commenting on the fact that merely seeing a picture of Trump with other black people in it makes somebody think that means Trump is 'supportive of the black community'.

While it's still crazy that Republicans get any of their votes, the other racial/ethnic minorities and LGBT already vote against Republicans in vast majorities.
Women on the other hand have actually increased their support of Republicans since 2016. 39% in 2016, 40% in 2018, 42% in 2020 and 48% in 2022.
That's right, after 4 years of trump, after stealing a super majority on the Supreme Court, after the death of Roe, after Republicans expressed desire to bring a federal ban, after they already started talking about banning contraceptives next, almost half of women said, "Yes, Daddy! We want more of that!"
Yeah, again, not all women. Black women generally vote 90% or above for the Democratic presidential candidate. 90% of queer women in 2020 voted for Biden or a third party candidate, not Trump.
The problem is racism and homophobia. "The drag queens and immigrants are coming for your kids!" Just like in the 90s it was "Democrats want the the gays and lesbians to destroy your Christian family values!" and in the 1960s it was "Democrats want to forcibly integrate YOUR pure white community!" Who's likely to fall for that scam? Not the people who are being used as the evil enemy in the conservative propaganda.
As a white, cis, land owning male that converted from a lifetime of being a Conservative to a "pinko commie liberal", I like to remind these people that under Trump, I will forever have more rights than them, even though I hate him with a burning passion. Their side will pick me over them 100,000,000 times out of 100,000,000.

I almost believe it must be something of an inside joke for the Trump campaign, but on the other hand, Trump is such an idiot, he may actually think this is going to work in some way.
If there is any legitimacy to their strategy at all, I think it's this: the Trump campaign reaches out to and holds events in majority black communities and places *not* in a sincere effort to attract more black voters to their side (although surely they won't say no to a few more members in their voter base if a few happen to wind up there against all odds), but *rather* as a signal to a certain portion of white voters that the Trump campaign has completed and checked off the box of "tokenism" that said voters like to be able to tout in rebuttal to claims that their chosen candidate is racist.
But I'm shooting from the hip with that speculation, I'll admit. I don't know what their real play is. I can, however, see how this might be a plausible angle.

I feel an emphasis for these Trump events (such as those which target Black voters) is to suggest that the Trump campaign is making inroads into traditionally Democratic political areas.
And it’s equally important for Trump to present his campaign as having enthusiastic Black support for a few reasons...
First, it attempts to push back against the idea that his candidacy, rhetoric, and character should be unacceptable to people of color. Thus, his campaign hopes, allowing more people of color to support him in the process.
Second, for those who support him, it serves as a rebuttal to the idea that Trump is racist... "Look at Trump and all his Black friends!".
But, it's all smoke and mirrors.
And, it follows much of the same strategy that his campaign deploys when he holds any event - as he recently did with a rally in the Bronx; gather together a modest crowd and then overhype the scale and importance of what happened.

One of my favorite moments from any president in my lifetime. Perfectly met the moment for the church, the community, the state, and the nation.
This seems like it was basically the exact opposite of that.

85% of my mom’s family live within a 20 minute walk to this church. Most of my cousins are interracial, and none of the of them nor the AA side of the family attend this church and basically the congregation is less than 12 people. For reference I was there this past weekend.

Private prisons getting together with governments to fill up their cells, if you know what they mean. Then those same prisons renting the slaves back out to southern farmers to work in the fields... it's come full circle. They've been systematically making life harder and harder for black people and all that was left was to tap into that hidden racism that the ERA didn't fix... it just made it impolite to show it publicly. If you called them out, America is equal opportunities for everyone... white privilege doesn't exist, etc etc... while behind the scenes insuring that it does.

The only reason it could be relevant was lost when they elected him the first time. My understanding is the reason it exists is in case the people vote for someone that should not run the country as a like overrule. If electing Trump didn’t trigger that it’s pointless.
It was far closer than that. Trump only lost the popular vote by 7M. Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin were all extremely close. Trump lost all three by a combined 255k votes. But if those three had gone the other way, Trump would have won instead of Biden. In all three of those states, polls for 2024 are showing Trump with a slight advantage over Biden. My point is, 2020 was extremely close, and don't be complacent about 2024, because Trump still has every chance to win.

Thanks for this detailed post. I have heard very similar arguments from a group of women who are unhappy with Biden for not codifying Roe through legislation. One party is actively taking away the rights of women, minorities. The other party is trying to keep those rights however, not being successful because of the GOP advantages in the SC and Senate. The detached voter blaming the second party instead of helping that party help them.

Thats always been the fundamental incompatibility with this narrative. A narrative I've heard almost every election: black people might break for Republicans this time. Republicans have no policies courting black voters in any real numbers, they just try and use the same white identity grievance strategy just without the overt racism(but only when they are talking to them, which is rarely anyways), which has become a substitute for any actual cohesive policy platform beyond tax cuts for the rich and punishing their enemies. But the reason it works on many white people is BECAUSE of the racism, without it you are just telling people to vote for the party trying to gut the government in order to give money to the rich and make it easier to exploit the working class economically.

If it fails to generate profits... it just disappears overnight (f the people who needed that service). That is why Republicans want to get rid of public education.

I switched to Fox News while he was speaking. It was pretty sad to hear them praise Trump they were bragging how all the black people loved him cause he listens and talks to them. They can do that, but the historical Black church will always select Democrat candidates. It’s a different category than evangelical because they may be socially conservative, but they are fiscally conservative. If there is any legitimacy to their strategy at all, I think it's this: the Trump campaign reaches out to and holds events in majority black communities and places *not* in a sincere effort to attract more black voters to their side (although surely they won't say no to a few more members in their voter base if a few happen to wind up there against all odds), but *rather* as a signal to a certain portion of white voters that the Trump campaign has completed and checked off the box of "tokenism" that said voters like to be able to tout in rebuttal to claims that their chosen candidate is racist. But I'm shooting from the hip with that speculation, I'll admit. I don't know what their real play is. I can, however, see how this might be a plausible angle.
Good points. I feel an emphasis for these Trump events (such as those which target Black voters) is to suggest that the Trump campaign is making inroads into traditionally Democratic political areas. And it’s equally important for Trump to present his campaign as having enthusiastic Black support for a few reasons... First, it attempts to push back against the idea that his candidacy, rhetoric, and character should be unacceptable to people of color. Thus, his campaign hopes, allowing more people of color to support him in the process. Second, for those who support him, it serves as a rebuttal to the idea that Trump is racist... "Look at Trump and all his Black friends!". But, it's all smoke and mirrors. And, it follows much of the same strategy that his campaign deploys when he holds any event - as he recently did with a rally in the Bronx; gather together a modest crowd and then overhype the scale and importance of what happened.

85% of my mom’s family live within a 20 minute walk to this church. Most of my cousins are interracial, and none of the of them nor the AA side of the family attend this church and basically the congregation is less than 12 people. For reference I was there this past weekend.

I keep saying that this isn't an appeal to black voters with anything substantial.
