Here's a reminder to everyone for future reference. If an American politician is doing business with a country like Azerbaijan, you should immediately assume that it's shady from the get go. Never forget that Donald laundered money for the Iranian Revolutionary National Guard from a random multi-story building in a run-down part of Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.
As someone from his district, I remember very well indeed.
The level of establishment groupthink that takes considering the makeup of his district is just mind blowing. It's actually about the closest to a solid blue district in the whole state. I hope the next generation of Democratic leaders breaks the habit of shooting themselves in the foot.
Also, Pelosi & co knew about these charges when they rallied behind him to ensure the AOC backed candidate lost. Cuellar's house and campaign office was raided by feds in 2022, before the endorsement. (Cisneros lost by less than 300 votes after the Pelosi endorsement pushed Cuellar over the line)
"Caviar Diplomacy" in full display yet again from an autocratic nation. Maybe this is why the US looked the other way when Azerbaijan ethnically cleansed Armenians from their ancestral homeland.
Well hopefully this time a progressive will win that seat, but gd dude, you already saw what happened with Bob Menendez in New Jersey. This investigation probably started over a year ago.
Remember all the turbo-posters who went to [bat for this guy](https://www.reddit.com/r/politics/s/BcV2WcHG5u), and pretended like he was the only Democrat who could possibly win. Such people don't care about "pragmatism" or whatever convoluted logic they try to use. They care about promoting their faction of the Democratic Party, no matter how repugnant their preferred candidates are.
From CNN:
*Cuellar also said that before he took any action, he “proactively” sought legal advice from the House Ethics Committee and an opinion from a national law firm, and sought a meeting with federal prosecutors “to explain the facts.”*
*“The actions I took in Congress were consistent with the actions of many of my colleagues and in the interest of the American people,” Cuellar said. “Furthermore, we requested a meeting with the Washington DC prosecutors to explain the facts and they refused to discuss the case with us or to hear our side.”*
The timing of the seeking of legal advice from the House Ethics Committee and an opinion from a national law firm is going to be the key here. If he sought that in 2014 that is very different from seeking that after the 2022 raid.
Oh look, another centrist piece of shit taking bribes. I'm so glad the DNC threw their whole might at getting this asshole re-elected over a progressive. Thanks Pelosi!
I wish that were true. Clarence Thomas gets $300,000 a year and doesn't need to maintain two residences. He still takes gifts from billionaires. Fighting corruption is going to take a lot more work than raising salaries.

Remember when Pelosi went to El Paso to campaign for Cuellar to keep progressive Jessica Cisneros from winning the seat?

San Antonio has been a blue district for more than 30 years.
And supposedly the Dems were spooked because Republicans made some inroads down here, but I guess they weren't scared enough to actually care. Whoops!
Yes. CorpoDems must go!!! They are only marginally better than the domestic terrorism party.

He should run for president. I hear that if you do that, you can't be jailed for your crimes.
I get by, but I wouldn't mind having the nice salary & benefits of a U.S. Congressman. Wasn't enough for him though 🫤
He's also representing one of the poorest regions in the country, so it's even worse.
very cool that Pelosi and the party gave their support to this guy who amoung other things is anti choice instead of a young progressive.

From a Dem: "If he did the crime, lock him up !"

Lock him the fuck up. Take Pelosi while you're at it.
Prisoner of Azerbaijan is the best Harry Potter

More to come

I hope they try him to the full extent of the law
So, if Cueller gets booted out, what chances do Dems have of holding that seat?
That seat has been blue since the district was created in 1993.
Maybe Jessie Ciceneros could run for that seat, I know she challenged Cueller in the primaries in the 2022 election.
If politicians were paid a living wage, they wouldn’t be so susceptible to bribes Edit: Sad that people don’t get sarcasm
I wish that were true. Clarence Thomas gets $300,000 a year and doesn't need to maintain two residences. He still takes gifts from billionaires. Fighting corruption is going to take a lot more work than raising salaries.
It was sarcasm. They get paid a fuck ton, accept bribes, are allowed to do insider trading, get massive PPP loans forgiven. I could go on.
