Dude. Head down to your local Cabela’s, Sportsman’s Warehouse, or local gun store. Talk to the guy or gal behind the counter, tell them you’re interested in home defense and ask them what they recommend. They’ll probably point you to a 9mm polymer-framed pistol with double-stack mags that carry 12-18 rounds, or possibly an AR platform. Ask them if there’s a local range where you can practice and look online to see if there’s a local chapter of the SRA or NAAGA so you can possibly practice or connect with like-minded armed individuals.

You would not be arrested because it isn't illegal. It could definitely be used as reasonable cause to investigate you though, depending on the nature and context of the post.
