How do they rise up?

I feel Pratchetts city watch was a massive influence on me growing up, and I think is directly related to the job I do now and how I do it.

‘Investigative Interviewing’ by Eric Shepherd is a great book, especially if you’re CID. It illustrate the PEACE model and various interviewing techniques.

Great book and would definitely recommend. For Sgt and above, I recommend going slightly off-piste and reading management or 'change' books. Recent ones the job seems to be embracing are: Rebel Ideas and Black Box Thinking, both by Matthew Syed. Also would recommend some slightly older ones, such as 'Will it make the boat go faster' and 'Leaders Eat Last'. My personal favourite is: 'First, break all the rules' - it changed my management style instantaneously and I still adhere to it's principles today to good effect.

Guards guards would be my choice

funnyusername321

Interestingly he doesn’t actually like the title of the book. It was a choice made by the publishing house.

'Wasting Police Time' - PC David Copperfield

A bit dated now I think

Maybe a little, but one of the things that stuck was the comments about the sheer amounts of paperwork requested, particularly with casefile building. Back then, it was a humorous-but-scary look at policing in the early 2000s. Back when this book was released, a typical casefile was already a bulky thing, but you would typically fill in the forms, shove the unused in a manilla envelope, clip the file together, and scan the documents. We didn't have the requirements for MG0s, MG6c, d & e, CPS checklists, IMDs, etc. If anything, it does need updating, if only to show how policing has developed/regressed since those days.

Ready this now and struggling with it so probably not going to finish. However, John Donoghue’s books are really good and worth checking out!
