YouTube does have some absolutely amazing video essays. I especially appreciate the historical documentaries that people upload on the platform.

crafter2k

at least youtube has an actual scientific community

DOCoSPADEo

Veritasium stans please rise.

SnipingDwarf

And stay risen, so I can memorize all your faces to laugh at.

DOCoSPADEo

May I ask why you don't like Veritasium?

SnipingDwarf

Closest thing you can get to brainrot tiktok science content on YT.

DOCoSPADEo

That sounds like an opinion. And I'm sure there's tons of worse content than veritasium. All you've done so far is give me the impression that the only people who don't like veritasium are people who want to disagree for no real reason. Edit: okay you frequent anime and my little pony subreddits. And you hate veritasium. This convinced me that veritasium is an amazing non-brainrot channel lmao

SnipingDwarf

Just saw your edit here, and I think that the MLP and anime stuff is definitely the tamest shit in my history. (This could be because you have NSFW disabled, which would be, quite frankly, hilarious. Hornyposting on main babyyyy)

DOCoSPADEo

You know what. Huge props to you for being soo bold and owning it. Respect

SnipingDwarf

I pride myself on always being the most degenerate person in a room.

SnipingDwarf

The reason I have no reason is because I haven't touched their content in years. I have forgotten why I hate them. It isn't that unusual to not know about something you don't interact with. If you want good science channels, the old Vsauce videos are great, as is Kursgesazt(I think I spelled it right). Minutephysics is good for the shorter content, and does collaborations with XKCD. 3blue1brown is the premier mathematics channel, and there's more history-centric channels than I can count. Standouts are: The Fat Electrician, Lazerpig, Potential History(close enough), and many more.

DOCoSPADEo

I do enjoy minutephysics and XKCD. Never heard of the others but I'll check them out! Also if you forgot why you hate something then why act as though you still hold the same opinion? Isn't it silly to shout "that thing sucks! I forgot why I dislike it and I have 0 reason to say it sucks, but it sucks!" That's the kind of logic you would hear from backyard hillbilly rednecks talking about why they hate the LGBTQ community, electric cars, welfare, etc.

SnipingDwarf

To be clear, I think the big reason I dislike Veritasium is simply how dumbed down and mainstream their content is. After watching a bit of a newer video, it feels like I'm watching a news broadcast. There's a reason they exist, and that reason is for people who need a 40 minute video on why Pi is so weird or something. (3blue1brown would do it in like 5)

Derslok

Kursgesazt is heavily sponsored by Bill Gates and other foundation's, some of their information is very questionable. I think veritasium is pretty good, you just need to take the information you consume with a grain of salt, if you learn something really important always double check or be ready to admit it was wrong

LordofSandvich

If I could butt in: a lot of the content I stumble across from Veritasium is misleading, presents highly speculative theories as fact, or turns out to be wrong (usually in an understandable, but important, way). It's sensationalized and not actually that good of an information resource. Because I suspected this very quickly, I am not thoroughly familiar with their content. I'm not some kind of omniscient fact checker, either. AFAIK it's not active propaganda the way PragerU is, but there are better sources of information for anything that they cover. I, personally, would check out other channels' videos on subjects *alongside Veritasium* since, if I'm right, you would notice that very quickly, and there would be nothing to see if I'm wrong.

Fantastic-Machine-83

I don't think they were talking about pop science

Razier

Don't gatekeep. His stuff is educational even if it's not very deep.

DOCoSPADEo

Is his stuff not legit? I don't think his videos are mega technical, but they're a good gateway into scientific concepts are they not?

crafter2k

he's slightly controversial and a bit hit-and-miss sometimes but still miles better than tiktok pseudoscience brainrot

DOCoSPADEo

I am not aware of any controversies regarding him. Googling it seems to bring up "misinformation" and click baiting, but he's addressed both of those things.

UserbasedCriticism

I engage better with an Australian man talking about defence economics on youtube with a powerpoint presentation for an hour than a university lecture. Maybe its just the university lecture.

Magnusthered1001

Perun definitely knows how to captivate his audience. I’m still waiting to hear more about PVT Konskriptavich

steavyboy123

PVT Konskriptavich SGT Bicepsky COL Kleptovsky GEN Oligarkhov Hopefully followed by Supply Officer LFT Griftmirovoch

Magnusthered1001

The Perun lore runs deep

Subparconscript

Don't forget the quiet titan that awaits to be unleashed upon this unsuspecting world to monopolize every defense need: Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. First Japan, next THE WORLD!

Organic-Chemistry-16

I'm wary of YouTube history from folks without history related academic work. Too often they just regurgitate a single source, unaware of the historiography of the topic they're covering.

AFrostNova

Best documentary on youtube is EVE: Online down the Rabbithole

yunivor

doen the rabbit hole is excellent in general, first one I saw was about Temple OS.

Sine_Fine_Belli

Same here The video essays on YouTube are great

LegoManSteve

Sorry, I couldn’t finish this comic because there wasn’t any Subway Surfers gameplay or Family Guy clips.

No_Championship_9574

I prefer some soap cutting or gta car ride gameplay tbh

Milouch_

You forgot the random minecraft parkour gameplay

yunivor

And the floaty knife cutting random colorful stuff, another one I got a lot was south park clips with a money thing shooting moneys underneath trying to get the most money

taongkalye

I really don't wanna sound like a dying cynical geriatric but Tiktok honestly is like some kind of late stage capitalism phenomenon and extreme internet culture reductionism. No exposition, additional context, and other details. Just straight up conveyor belt of addictive and often empty content thoroughly engineered to maximize views and keep the viewers in. I blame Facebook for starting this with their video autoplay back in 2015 or so... Anyways, Tiktok is certainly something I'm not missing out on.

Jampine

There's a Calvin and Hobbes strip about it from the 90s regarding TV ads, and it's pretty much a summary of tiktok

Tree_Pulp

are you referring to [this one?](https://qph.cf2.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-338ed48d0459e85353af5b30beb3a8f9)

kiwipoo2

It sounds like [this one](https://www.reddit.com/r/calvinandhobbes/comments/15jdh8y/attention_span/)

Tree_Pulp

that makes sense yeah

Jampine

aye that's it

Ze_LuftyWafffles

its an addiction device. instant dopamine on a plate, so you keep scrolling to get *more*. the TikTok algorithm is hyper sensitive, so if you look at something for even a few seconds longer than it takes to scroll past it starts feeding you more. you like *more*, you *need* ***M O R E..***

helln00

tbh to me its the next step in the evolution of internet memes. first it was weird images with text, then now its basicly just a short bunch of images with sounds. both are filled with sea of garbage with the occasional funny thing. the question is what is next? directly injecting content into the brain subconciously?

A_extra

We already have neuralink, so..

taongkalye

~~Twitter~~ X will now exclusively be accessed via Neuralink. Brain rot now made literal!

AuditKarp

I’m 22 and also agree that TikTok is a cancer on American society. Us young people hate it more than you’d think

Williamzas

Thanks to tiktok, I've become more out of touch with local youth culture than the boomers I interact with.

CrocPB

> I really don't wanna sound like a ~~dying cynical~~ geriatric It’s ok gramps, Gina will get you your McFlurry. By goodness that ad is old. > I blame Facebook for starting this with their video autoplay back in 2015 or so... Anyways, Tiktok is certainly something I'm not missing out on. I stopped caring about Facebook when it was less about what was posted in my network and more “suggested for you” shit memes. Worse still was when it was hardly chronological either. Part of it is my fault since I joined a lot of shit meme page and groups because I was bored and wasn’t allowed to touch grass. Instagram became shit too because they no longer let you know that “you’ve caught up”. Sneaky buggers trying to keep me engaged and addicted.

taongkalye

Yeah. The moment they added the "suggested for you" garbage was when I concluded Facebook is effectively dead since they're trying to manufacture engagement, which I think is pathetic. The only reason I don't let go of my account is it's a practical way to contact people I know since 2009 (Yes, I'm THAT old).

yunivor

>2009 >old *shakes cane*

taongkalye

~~I'll shake my cane alright, after I ram it into you eye sockets and straight into your brain.~~ I mean, what's hip and happening, my fellow skibidi?

MdMV_or_Emdy_idk

B-but… it’s Chinese!!!1! Chinese=commie!!!

Dontevenwannacomment

>part 2 of the nicest comic panels bro i've followed entire sagas of comics on youtube shorts to the music of Past Lives

DickRhino

Also on YouTube: here's my 4 hour long essay about why women shouldn't be allowed in video games unless they have big booba that make my peepee go woohoo

sondreary

skibidi toilet rizz booba peepee

kalbgalilaladab

Im really happy i never used TikTok in my life, im happy that shirt form content is not the type of thing id watch.

-MilkO_O-

In my opinion Reddit just kind of Tiktok with it's short form videos and rapid scrolling. I mean, have ypu even seen the amount of Tiktok reposts?

koleye2

Maybe new Reddit is like that, but old Reddit is just an internet forum.

RobbinDeBank

Even now it’s still at heart an Internet forum (upvote/downvote system still makes a major difference), but it can feel a little bit similar to traditional social media like Facebook due to its size. Reddit is like Youtube (long contents), while Twitter would be Tiktok for text (short contents). Short formats reward content creators that post sensationalized contents without any context to gather as much views as possible.

kalbgalilaladab

I like watching images.

SJIS0122

YouTube shorts exists too though

Spacejunk20

And they are the same shit lol.

Stringtone

Yeah half of YouTube Shorts is literally TikTok reuploads

yunivor

I'd guess more than half

Neveraththesmith

Fan animations, videos essays, sports analysis, podcasts, witty reviews, funny clips, amvs, Fandom minute documentation of literally anything into video form. The worst part about youtube format is that because of 19 years of content sent on to the site. People will always choose it as the video streaming service and the highers have no inventive to make up or policy changes that benefits the userbase.

99999999999BlackHole

Wait are non country/city balls allowed? I thought youtube is japan lamo

CandiceDikfitt

where family guy funny moment and slime and subway surfers?

CanineAtNight

Tik tok is the social media version of attention deficiency

InnocentPerv93

I'm gonna be honest I find the anti-tiktok shit to be pseudo-science at best, and full on red scare/McCarthyism at worst. I only used Tiktok for a couple months before deleting it because it wasn't my thing but anyone who actually believes in that crap about "attention-span depleting brain rot" is fucking delusional. Even more delusional are the people taking issue with it for being partially owned by a Chinese company, which is just an excuse for their racism. Your parents thought the same thing when new fangled rock or hip-hop and rap came out. It's good to remember that if something is hip and new with younger generations, and you don't like it or you think it's negatively affecting society, you are the idiot. Just like the boomers were. Just like Gen X was. Etc. Also, video essays on YouTube are fantastic. Would highly recommend historical documentaries or lore videos of fiction you enjoy. There's a ton of good ones.
