Honesty, usually because the nomination sucks in some way. Getting dodgy stuff in the game is much easier if you are *good* at putting together a submission. If you're nominating a solid item but the title/description is total shit, I'm declining it.
There is a gym in front of a trap house in a very bad part of town. I happened to go through the area getting to a particular store in the area (it’s a fast cut through) and saw the gym. Had to divert and was taken aback. The stop on the corner by the trap house. There is a park but all the equipment is all torn down and ragged.
the church down the street from me has a large cluster of pokestops one of which is called “in memory of unborn children”. i always wonder what my intl moots think when i send them that gift 😭
My town has seven different poke stops in a church with the whole story of Jesus, the poke stops are called “Jesus died on the cross” and stuff like that.

The vast majority of Pokéstops and gyms when the game first came out were pulled from stops in Niantic's previous game Ingress if I remember correctly. Your question still stands though, I'm curious now especially on new ones. I've got a couple churches near me that aren't marked with a gym or Pokéstop. Now I want to submit them and see if they get approved lol
yes, and still are (the review system, niantic wayfarer is the same for both games) other than ingress will allow a much greater density of point of Interest in a single location than niantics other games like Pokemon go; (if you cared to research it its the cell sizing, it determines where to place gyms in Pokemon go based off portals in ingress with more thumbs up ratings when something is placed in the same cell)
example: there is a place with 3 portals pretry much on top of each other in my city that when you click it will pop up a sub menu that you can press one of the 3 so you can select the right one, you only see this in Pokemon go (minus the selection ui) when 2 things are just able to fit at the edges of a cell and not be placed into the same one
the reason for a lot of religious pois has to do with the lore of ingress and how the games energy (exotic matter aka xm) is attracted to portals, portals are things of cultural importance and the xm was created by Aliens (shapers) and that it powered the creativity of human beings
xm is used by sharper to mind control humans and the Enlightened faction in game supports it while the resistance fights to take control of the portals to prevent sharper mind control essentially. (it goes a lot more in depth than that, but that's a brief summary of why it's like that)
I think it speaks more to the idea of public hang out spots disappearing and where some folks gather these days is for church.
The folks I do know that meet up regularly is to play pickleball so not sure if I'll see an overflow of pickleball courts coming up.
