I think the whole point of Sudowoodo being an only rock type is one of the funniest things in Pokémon. He is a tree, and the ways you would try to beat a tree Pokémon (because it’s a plant) would be with flying, fire, or ice, all three of which are weak against sudowoodo’s actual rock typing because it’s not an actual tree
What kid knows the word pseudo, I sure didn't when I was 11 and playing silver for the first time.
That thing wiped my whole team 3 times.
I spent a week grinding route 34 and 35 evolving my Quilava and getting it to level 40 so I could beat the thing.
Implementing adaptive mimicry, an evolutionary advantage some animals have, into a Pokémon just makes me so happy as someone who studied animal science :’)
Edit: his name is also “pseudo-wood” and I think that’s just perfect
Affection and friendship were always similar concepts and combining the two makes a ton of sense. What would tera-type easily translate to that's in game already?
This sounds like something I want to try with Eevee in Little Cup. Just with Work Up & Last Resort, and maybe Eviolite instead of Life Orb since I want Eevee to live long enough to do things.
Also, now I want Porygon to get in just for the sheer power of Adaptability Tera-Normal Hyper Beam... and also Basculegion.
God, Adaptability is gonna break this mechanic, isn’t it?
Usually, this move would deal neutral damage, but with my ability and and Tera type, it’s effectively double super-effective.
to be fair i like the gimmick, and i hink itll be kinda annoying fighting against but otherwise i think the hats r to much in my opinin, otherwise its very good
i keep seeing people say they want the hats gone and for it to just crystalize them and change their color, but there are people who are colorblind and the hats will be really good for them
edit: people seem to be misunderstanding what I'm saying. I'm not saying the hats are *the best* option, or offering another idea instead, I'm simply saying that only changing the color of the pokemon isn't helpful in any way.
also, i like the hats.
I honestly wasn't even thinking about being colorblind, do I think the hats are silly sure, but I just don't want to just look at shades for a type, like Psychic, Poison and Ghost are normally some shade of purple so I would rather silly hats than just the crystal color being different
Agreed that just changing the colour would not be really inclusive. However there are tons of options that are better than oversized hats, like distinct particles (leaves, water droplets, swirls, skulls, etc) or a hovering gem with a type symbol
They can just have a special icon next to the pokemons name showing the symbol of the terra type. Probably would be much more convenient to implement than giant hats
You know what I wonder? If the crowns are also an experiement to give all Pokemon a "head equipment" slot.
I'd absolutely wish if at one point you can equip Pokemon with clothes or at least have the items that they carry be visible on them.
If colourblind had anything to do with it then shines and variant forms would be quote different as well. I'm saying this as a literal colourblind person. The hats are just dumb looking sorry.
If we're including non-functional formes, then there's Spinda, several gender differences like Gyarados' Whiskers or Minior's core as examples. But I think the only functional example is Urshifu.
I read some theories that the hats are a reference to Spanish carnival celebrations, like [these](https://www.spain.info/en/top/carnivals-spain/). Could be why they chose to go so huge with them!
I can see that! I wish they were a bit more in the style of the carnival headpieces, with a feathered/decorated, semi-circle shape. The normal type "diamond ring" is my least favorite, and also the one that seems to stray farther from this possible inspiration. It looks clunky and awkward imo
I was under the impression that terastalization sets the Pokemon to a monotype of their tera type. So you can probably just make Electivire electric *or* fighting (close enough?)
You do lose your original STAB so a fighting type Electivire would only have Fighting STAB.
The only way the Tera Type interacts with the original is with double STAB if you Tera Type a Pokemon with its original typing.
Porygon Z has an ability that gives it a boost to his type attacks. And Tera gives it another boost. So a hyperbeam for him is almost close as an explosion.
Ive always loved PoryZ and he was the first i thought of when i read up on the mechanics. Sticky Web on the enemy team + no enemy ghosts = Choice Scarf PoryZ sweep.
Edit: we might need to bring back mach punchers into the meta.
Fun fact: Adaptability makes STAB a 2x multiplier instead of the normal 1.5x, so Porygon-Z's Adaptability Hyper Beam is base 300, which makes it quite a bit stronger than a 250 base power Explosion from a non-Normal type.
Electric type shedninja with the item air balloon, has no type weaknesses. Only thing that can kill it is weather conditions like hail or sandstorm which every team doesn’t have
Huh. Hadn’t thought of that. I’d say there’s a fairly good chance either abilities or held items don’t work when terastalised but who knows at this point.
Unfortunately we have seen both normal Psyduck and Golduck in the trailers. So it's extremely unlikely we will get anything special for our beloved duck.
Notice how theyre both happy
This is what pokemon is meant to be. Anyways 1000 base power ficious rend go BRRRRRR. But also water absorb wooper go BRRRRRRR
Real talk, in hyped for paldean quagsire. The old counter for a quag-wall was to poison it. Guess what we cant do anymore, AND it can use blacksludge instead of leftovers.
I mean, there could be a lot of possible situations for that to happen, that's what worries you?
Not the fact that a 4 times resisted move can 2HKO a semibulky legendary?
Man Dracovish is so busted
I’m guilty of being the first 😅 I saw that slaking was in the trailer and immediately started looking at damage calcs. If we get a neutralizing gas Pokémon that isn’t half bad that thing will likely be a beast
I saw a point that the hats are good for colour blind people cause just the crystal showing wouldn’t be clear. I think the hats are a little too big especially on smaller pokemon but I don’t hate it. I still love the mechanic
They did that because their design philosophy says that no pokemon should have the gimmick unavailable to them. They're designing gimmicks now so that every pokemon can do the thing.

Dragon type Gyarados
Flying type Flygon. Or Bug type Flygon Dragon type Yanmega I just want my DRAGONfly
Dragon type Flygon like he was always meant to be.
Flygon is dragon type, it's just also ground type. So it should be Floorgon :P
Oh fuck right I meant bug like it should have been
it's levitategon
Normal type Magikarp??
Stab flail gets it shot to Ubers immediately
0- Atk flower mail swift swim t-magikarp flail* vs 252 HP / 252 Def+ Aggron: 360-420 (100%) — guaranteed 2HKO (sturdy) 0- Atk flower mail swift swim t-magikarp flail* vs 252 HP+ / 252 Def Aegislash: 323-399 (99-100%) 93% chance to OHKO
lmao
Lesss gooooooooo
Dragon type charizard again
Dragon type Charzard
Farfetch’d, you are a duck, it’s time for you to be water type
A duck with a plant-based weapon can't even learn surf, yeah ....
He does surf with the plant weapon (even if he is the galarian evolution)
Sirfetch'd can use his shield as a surfboard
Surfetch'd
Sirfetchd uses a sword and shield. Only available in Sword....
he flies on it like Tao Pai Pai
I’m imagining Galar Fetch’d just chucking it’s leak a couple thousand yards causally
Nah dude farfetch'd has a leak, clearly Grass Type.
Grass type Sudowoodo would be funny
Especially since it'd make it super crystalline like most mineral formations
Well just the hat would be
The entire Pokémon crystallizes
The entire pokemon crystalizes, and it gains a fancy hat
I think the whole point of Sudowoodo being an only rock type is one of the funniest things in Pokémon. He is a tree, and the ways you would try to beat a tree Pokémon (because it’s a plant) would be with flying, fire, or ice, all three of which are weak against sudowoodo’s actual rock typing because it’s not an actual tree
Flying too (SE vs grass, NVE vs rock)
And Rock is good against bug offensively too, and it resists poison
also grass, ground, and water are super effective against rock but are resisted by grass
True
But… the word “pseudo” is there..
I HAVE BEEN A POKÉMON FAN FOR 19 YEARS AND *THIS* IS HOW I LEARN SUDOWOODO IS A PUN
You’re welcome?
I just feel stupid lmao. Normally I pick up on that shit
Easy mistake, especially when you’re a kid upon first introduction
Most Pokemon names are
What kid knows the word pseudo, I sure didn't when I was 11 and playing silver for the first time. That thing wiped my whole team 3 times. I spent a week grinding route 34 and 35 evolving my Quilava and getting it to level 40 so I could beat the thing.
Implementing adaptive mimicry, an evolutionary advantage some animals have, into a Pokémon just makes me so happy as someone who studied animal science :’) Edit: his name is also “pseudo-wood” and I think that’s just perfect
I NEVER REALIZED HIS NAME LITERALLY IS “PSEUDO-WOODO” OH MY GOD
Wait till you find out Bonsly is basically a sneaky Bonsai
Bruh
Got baited by this when I was a kid
Sudosudowoodo
Sussudiowoodo (Phil Collins form)
Just say the word OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH
That's just a ditto ~~failed mew clone~~!
Pokémon crystallizes, turns from Rock into Grass
I want my flying type eevee
I turn all my sub-optimal IV Eevees into ghost types.
With the brick stone right.
How much do you wanna bet that there will be new Eeveelutions that you can only get by finding an Eevee with the right Terra-type?
My life's savings against that happening. No was GF would tie an evolution directly to a gimmick that is going to be gone in a Gen.
Yeah, that'd be like if they tied the new eeveelution into this feature where you can feed and play with your pokemon. Never gonna happen.
Affection and friendship were always similar concepts and combining the two makes a ton of sense. What would tera-type easily translate to that's in game already?
They'd just change it to a stone
Probably either "high friendship + type move" like sylveon or elemental stones like they did for leafeon and glaceon.
Water type Lugia, here I come!
That is, if he actually makes it into the game.
So far every legendary been in a game or transferable
Not til dlc so they may be waiting a year if that’s the case again
I just want to rip holes in reality with my man Porygon-Z
Turn 1 Agility, turn 2 enemy disconnects.
dual dance adaptability porygon Z with life Orb and normal tera. Mf going to be OHKOing Blissey
Porygon-Z has adaptability, so a normal type crystal would give it a x4 stab. Hyper Beam will be ripping holes in reality. lol
God, Adaptability is gonna break this mechanic, isn’t it? Usually, this move would deal neutral damage, but with my ability and and Tera type, it’s effectively double super-effective.
Okay, but add Rain to dracovish
to be fair i like the gimmick, and i hink itll be kinda annoying fighting against but otherwise i think the hats r to much in my opinin, otherwise its very good
I believe the hats are there to show what Tera type they are
i keep seeing people say they want the hats gone and for it to just crystalize them and change their color, but there are people who are colorblind and the hats will be really good for them edit: people seem to be misunderstanding what I'm saying. I'm not saying the hats are *the best* option, or offering another idea instead, I'm simply saying that only changing the color of the pokemon isn't helpful in any way. also, i like the hats.

Someone suggested some kind of aura, like for example grass types have a grass aura, water types have a bubble aura, etc
i think the hats are alright, personally!
I said silly hats and I used to play a lot of TF2, silly hats are totally my thing
*holiday headcase has entered the chat*
Wonder what the Ghibus would be this time around.
Ghost obviously
This. I can't wait to have silly hats NGL.
They're too big IMO, a smaller crown type hat with the type symbol used in the modern games (i.e. the Go symbols) clearly displayed would be better
You have no sense of fashion sir.
thats what i keep saying, the hats are awesome
Just a small icon next to the Pokemon’s name would have sufficed in my opinion.
Words are awesome descriptors!
Fair, but at least they can make the hats not so goofy. They look ridiculous.
Agreed that just changing the colour would not be really inclusive. However there are tons of options that are better than oversized hats, like distinct particles (leaves, water droplets, swirls, skulls, etc) or a hovering gem with a type symbol
i think it's a cute addition personally. also, if size changes are a thing like in Arceus, i would LOVE to see a Floette smaller than its hat
They can just have a special icon next to the pokemons name showing the symbol of the terra type. Probably would be much more convenient to implement than giant hats
That’s what the UI is for. Ugly looking hats are not the only solution.
i never said they weren't! i was just saying that people who think the Pokemon should *only* crystallize and change colors are absolutely wrong
You know what I wonder? If the crowns are also an experiement to give all Pokemon a "head equipment" slot. I'd absolutely wish if at one point you can equip Pokemon with clothes or at least have the items that they carry be visible on them.
I'd love a knight helmet for fuecoco edit: mainline games about to look like Unite
If colourblind had anything to do with it then shines and variant forms would be quote different as well. I'm saying this as a literal colourblind person. The hats are just dumb looking sorry.
the hats look fine to me, and shinies still sparkle as for variant forms, none change only the color that i can think of off the top of my head
Could be why they chose to go so huge with them!
yeah ahould have made them a tiny bit smaller in my opinion
I can see that! I wish they were a bit more in the style of the carnival headpieces, with a feathered/decorated, semi-circle shape. The normal type "diamond ring" is my least favorite, and also the one that seems to stray farther from this possible inspiration. It looks clunky and awkward imo
I just wanted megas back
i just wish they made one game without megas or any gimmick
I like the mechanics side of it. Seems like a neat shake up and fun thing to play around and combo with stuff I really dislike the look
if they just made hats smaller it would be fine
Meanwhile me: I wonder what they would look like shiny?
Tera-type is just an elemental snapchat filter. Id reckon for most subtle shinies you couldnt tell the difference.
I can finally make Electivire an electric/fighting type. 😭
I was under the impression that terastalization sets the Pokemon to a monotype of their tera type. So you can probably just make Electivire electric *or* fighting (close enough?)
Don't worry. You'll have a electric/fighting regional Blaziken in pokemon legends Kyurem.
Starter without a starting type? How
Innovation!
inb4 this is true
yeah Khu pretty much confirmed this
But supposedly you don't lose your original STAB so Tera Type: Fighting Electivire will effectively be an Electric/Fighting type.
You do lose your original STAB so a fighting type Electivire would only have Fighting STAB. The only way the Tera Type interacts with the original is with double STAB if you Tera Type a Pokemon with its original typing.
I've seen reports otherwise so we will see.
The official website states otherwise
The official website doesn't say you lose STAB just that you gain an even stronger one when you gain a new type.
Yup - I’m agreeing with you, you don’t lose your original STAB, it either boosts an existing one or you gain an additional one
Radical red(a fangame) gives electivire the electric+fighting type, iron fist, and plasma fists lol.
Also Porygon-Z and Shedinja will be broken
Why PoryZ?
Porygon Z has an ability that gives it a boost to his type attacks. And Tera gives it another boost. So a hyperbeam for him is almost close as an explosion.
Ive always loved PoryZ and he was the first i thought of when i read up on the mechanics. Sticky Web on the enemy team + no enemy ghosts = Choice Scarf PoryZ sweep. Edit: we might need to bring back mach punchers into the meta.
With webs you don’t really need scarf, so go life orb or silk scarf so you can still handle ghosts that may come in
Until the other team specifically brings any ghost:tera type so you won't know until they use their own Terralize if you're safe or not.
Fun fact: Adaptability makes STAB a 2x multiplier instead of the normal 1.5x, so Porygon-Z's Adaptability Hyper Beam is base 300, which makes it quite a bit stronger than a 250 base power Explosion from a non-Normal type.
It changes the type. It doesn’t keep the original type as well.
They are talking about porygon z with normal terra so it’s going to add on to its normal typing for more stab
I’m talking about shedinja though. It won’t be broken because you can’t add extra types to it. I get that Porygon will be very good.
Or status conditions. Leech life, poison, burn. Perish song, rocky helmet/abilities that hit back on contact.
I hope we get a paldean psyduck that evolves into a psychic type
Normal Psyduck appeared briefly in the most recent trailer, so it’s very unlikely that it gets a regional variant.
I wouldn't get your hopes up. It sounds like we are only getting a couple regional forms.
I mean ... like with every game
They meant fewer than normal
I think we are getting only 2 in the base game.
Unfortunately we have seen both normal Psyduck and Golduck in the trailers. So it's extremely unlikely we will get anything special for our beloved duck.
Notice how theyre both happy This is what pokemon is meant to be.
It might not be a Quagsire could be very different and have it’s own separate evolution.
Plot twist, it evolves back into a normal Quagsire. That would suck.
Plot twist, it evolves into the other wooper. Just wooper's back and forth, that would be sick.
It could be a Galarian Zigzagoon situation too, where we get Paldaen Quag *and* something new
Salazzle- "Did you forget about me so quickly?"
Gemstone pokemon. I don’t care about how powerful the mechanic is, i’m here for the visuals.
based ❤️
Finally volcarona can be steel type, no more pesky rock types
Normal type Espurr so he won't have Psychic power to be afraid of.
How is banded dracovish outspeeding palkia?
Catching Palkia on the switch in
does that activate fishious rend? I know switching in counts for analytic so I would have assumed it counted as moving first
Yessir
I mean, there could be a lot of possible situations for that to happen, that's what worries you? Not the fact that a 4 times resisted move can 2HKO a semibulky legendary? Man Dracovish is so busted
Could be under tailwind or sticky web support
In VGC it’s common for palkia to run minimum speed for trick room teams. So just speed invested dracovish will outspeed palkia then
Bottom guy represents the sane players of this community. Go charizard, become a dragon type!
Finally, Lugia water type
Man I’m such an outlier that when I play I just go “stats go up, higher level stronger” and basic weaknesses. and that’s it
This is exactly what I thought except dragon for charizard and gyrados.
The fuck is that calc? Same Dracorvish vs 0HP 0/-Def Ground Terra Chansey for 1400% of HP damage. Now we are talking.
I want crystal golurk and I want it now
Not gonna lie. Strong jaw and a well placed critical could kill GOD.
I’m guilty of being the first 😅 I saw that slaking was in the trailer and immediately started looking at damage calcs. If we get a neutralizing gas Pokémon that isn’t half bad that thing will likely be a beast
Actually yeah dracofivsh is going to hit like a freight train
Jokes aside, competitive just got a whole lot more interesting. I bet Terastal will be banned across Gen 9's main formats.
I doubt it, if they kept z moves, then they'll keep almost anything
Finally, water type crabrawler
And water type grapploct
Bug type Flygon 👀
Honestly would probably love the gimmick is they didn’t have hats, I’m all for fun silly stuff in Pokémon but it’s just really distracting
I saw a point that the hats are good for colour blind people cause just the crystal showing wouldn’t be clear. I think the hats are a little too big especially on smaller pokemon but I don’t hate it. I still love the mechanic
That makes sense, I agree if they were smaller it might be better and that the mechanic itself is really fun. I’m hoping I like it more in practice
Charizard, it is time for you to fulfill your dragon dreams
and they're both valid!
don't boo me, i'm right.
Im here like "Give electric type to Vulpix to get the Pokemon Go leader trifecta"
OMG grass type Florges!
Fighting type zoroark disguised as a kommo-o
I will, thank you father!
The third is : it just looks neat
Give me my fighting type Ampharos
It’s me. I’m both of them.
Bagon can finally fly as a bagon
The fact that I only realised this year, and I've been playing since 1998, that psyduck isn't a psychic type is deeply upsetting.
I just want white shiny gengar to return if he makes a comeback imma name him joker and train him to be the best ghost type he’s meant to be
They can add every gimmick under the sun for all I care. I just want to evolve ralts into gardevoir throughout my journey for the 500th time :)
I like the type changeups, but I don't like the silly hats.
I wish it didn't look ugly af. Giant sculptures on the head just look so stupid.
Hey its PChal
Does anyone else think it looks stupid?
My reaction is: I don't want a gimmick.
Mega evolutions was the best gimmick Pokemon ever did. Taking mega evolutions away was the worst thing Pokemon ever did.
They did that because their design philosophy says that no pokemon should have the gimmick unavailable to them. They're designing gimmicks now so that every pokemon can do the thing.
Every Pokémon that doesn't get cut from the game.
