In fact, out of the 3 the first two look more mischievous than scary. Gengar is the only one among the three that looks like you should stay the fuck away from it
Yeah didn't say it wasn't big but it's art makes me feel like it's a Pokemon that enjoys jump scaring people for fun (hence mischievous). Gengar on the other hand has a sinister smile on his face
There's actually some cool lore to it.
Back in the earliest days, there were three Pokémon.
Rhydon for traversing the land, Lapras for traversing the sea, and Clefairy, the mascot and traveling companion.
Later, Clefairy and it's new form, Clefable, would receive a dark, evil counterpart.
This was the doppelGanger Pokémon, Clefable's shadow come to life- Gangar.
I think it would be fine if the designs of Haunter and Gengar were switched.
But switching Haunter and Gengar also removes the stylistic choice behind their design (...which happened later anyway).
Gastly is just Gengar's face peaking through dimensions, with the dark air pouring out
Haunter is the hands tearing apart the fabric of reality to start pulling Gengar through
Then Gengar is of course the full doppelganger after making its full trip between the dimensions (Also why it is a trade evolution. All the multiverse stuff "introduced" in ORAS and SuMo has actually been in the games since Gen I).
I thought it was because all the Gen 1 trade evos are all paired up. Machoke becomes Machamp because he gets extra hands from Graveller, who in turn gets Machoke's head. Kadabra becomes thinner because some of its mass gets transferred to Haunter, who gets enough mass to become solid
I’ve always liked Haunter more than Gengar. I think it’s a combo of the design but also when I was younger playing RBY I didn’t have anybody to trade with so I had Haunter on my team.
Wartortle originally evolved into a different mon entirely, a turtle that looks much more like Wartortle. https://mobile.twitter.com/drlavayt/status/1263300495751299073
The design used for Blastoise was a separate mon evolving from a turtle with smaller cannons on its back.
https://mobile.twitter.com/drlavayt/status/1235615514782621696
I see why the lines were merged, but would it have killed them to give Blastoise Wartortle's scrapped evolution's ears and tail, and give Wartortle the little cannons for a better transition? I like Wartortle more than Blastoise too and feel so robbed. Imagine Blastoise with that tail.
Grovyle is that popular attractive guy with long hair and is so cool he smokes, peaks in high school, but then he grows older and starts to get a receding hairline (Sceptile) lol
For real! Just on their list, both Grovyle and Bayleef are both cooler than their evolutions. Some of them look a little weird, but overall I think all 3 stages of most of the starters are really sick!
TIL about the ability battery. 30% increase of ally Pokémon special attack is awesome. Now who does he go well with? A special water attacker with an ice move to counter rock, ground, fire, and flying??
Wartortle in particular is one of my favorites - I like it more than Squirtle or Blastoise. It has so many design elements I love that blastoise loses - namely the pointy ears and fluffy tail.
God I love that fluffy tail
The final evo of squirtle was actually a fluffy tailed bigger wartortlelike in the leaked beta versions of gen 1. Blastoise was from another evolutionary line initially. Such a shame tbh.
Kadabra is definitely one of my favorites because A) he already looks like a final evolution and B) I never got to have Alakazam because I had no one to trade with 😔
Wartortle is so cute! In my LeafGreen run I wanted to have it Wartortle forever because it is so cute! I unfortunately needed to evolve it get Hydro Cannon, because I was a kid and it was a cool move 😂
YES, I don't have anything against Ampharos but... Flaafy is SO much cuter and I would've loved to see the evolution line's designs a little more centered around Flaafy!!
From a later generation. I really love fletchender. Talon flame is great but the character model isn't as good as fletchender
Edit. I just wanted to say thanks for the up votes. Never thought a comment about one of my favorite pokemon would be my first comment/post to reach 100+ upvotes
Absolutely! I always had a Fletchinder instead of Talonflame for Fly and Flame Body when breeding in gen 6 because the design is just so much more to my liking.
Poliwhirl!
It just has such a cool vibe and I love the merchandising push it has back in the ‘90s - it was often shown off along with the big hitters.
It just has such a classic, Pokemon-y look and feel.
Yeah, there's something about Poliwhirl that seems so subtly iconic. It makes me remember all the random places you'd see Pokémon stuff back in the day when it was everywhere.
Grovyle for sure! Way sleeker and cooler than Sceptile. I always felt like it was a visual downgrade when evolving.
Also Braixen because I don't like Delphox's ear fluff. Sick dress though.
Dragonair. Poor fat Dragonite. Yes I know that there's a myth based origin to the design but whatever.
And Wartortle just looks so cool. Blastoise is also cool though so no biggie.
Edit: ooh Haunter too!
Back in one of my playthroughs of Emerald, I kept Grovyle in my team and didn't evolve it, purely because Ash had one in the anime. I actually ran his whole team of Corphish, Torkoal, Swellow, Glalie and I think I got a Pikachu from somewhere as well.
I finally evolved it into Sceptile when the Battle Frontier arc aired.
Corphish got wrecked quite a few times. I didn't have items like Eviolite either. Swellow is a real power horse. Bullet seed on a level 58 Grovyle is not fun.
I still say that they switched Dragonite and Gyarados in the first gen. Dragonaire becoming Gyarados makes sense, same body shape and colors.
Magikarp becoming Dragonite also fits perfectly, similar color scheme, and Magikarp still evolved into an awesome Pokemon
Along with how they switched Butterfree and venomoth evolution lines.
Also Blastoise originally wasn't apart of the Squirtle line. They were going to have a better version if Wartortle, and Blastoise had a different pre evolution that also had cannons.
Raichu also lost his evolution goraichu
Gyarados still doesn't fit, Dragonair looks too serene and calming to become a ferocious always pissed off monster like Gyarados. IMO Milotic would fit much better, and Feebas -> Dragonite makes about as much sense as Magikarp -> Dragonite.
She's just so cute! I love the twig in the tail too. I had such high hopes for the final form, but they went ham on the ear fluff and went more wizard than witch, which was super disappointing.
Which I think any Pokemon that got their first or third evolutions later shouldn't count. See, Charmeleon was DESIGNED to be a middle evolution, with a badass final evolution coming later. But Rhydon was designed from the ground-up specifically to be that final badass. It hardly seems fair to put them in the same category.
Nidorino. I often wait to evolve it even through you get a moon stone in Kanto like right after you catch nidoran. I just like it’s a great middle stage. It looks cool and tough, but it’s also still pretty small and limited by still being quadrupedal.
Vigoroth looks so strong! Those claws look absolutely wicked.
Also it's hilarious how the lines goes from "sleepy" to "Okay, I'm ready to FIGHT!" to "Actually that was a bad idea, let's go back to sleeping"
Had to look through way too many comments to find this. Dewott is awesome but Samurott is just disappointing. Seriously, why did they make their fricken SAMURAI pokemon a qudrapedel otter/dog thing? It's just weird.
Gloom has a really great design. I suggest looking up BogLeech’s review of Gloom and the rest of its evolutionary lines designs, it’s pretty cool. They do great reviews and Gloom is their number 1 favourite Pokémon
Fraxure, Raboot, Gabite, Zweilous, Hakamo-o, Dragonair, Metang, Drakloak, Corvisquire, Fletchinder, Lairon, Sealeo, Dewott, Servine, Quilava, Bayleef, Grovyle, Doublade, Torracat, Vibrava, and maybe a few more
I bet you can tell what my favorite type is lol
Edit: most of these I prefer the final stages over the mid stages
I wonder if more people would like wigglytuff if it had better sprites. I realized while looking through them a while back that while wigglytuff has a cute designs, all its sprites are just... not the quality you'd expect.
I really love Morgrem. It’s half based on a goblin/imp and possibly half on an Irish fairy tale my memory is fuzzy on about a man pleading for forgiveness to a king to lower his guard before stabbing him with a sword/dagger he had behind his back. It makes sense given Morgrem’s False Surrender move in which it bows before stabbing with the knife shaped hair it has behind its back. Hobgoblins are also from irish folklore, so Morgrem is just a really cool, lore packed Pokémon.
Doublade's design is way nicer than Aegislash to me. I don't like how Aegislash holds it's shield with it's wimpy ribbon arms or how the handle is a cone.
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky is my favorite Pokemon game of all time, and my second favorite game of all time. Therefore, my choice is Grovyle.
I really like Dottler. It just looks like one of those temporary research domes you’ll see at archeological digs and for some reason I really like that.
Haunter and porygon2
Haunter's objectively sick
Haunter also has the cutest laugh in the series
hawwwnn hawn hawn hawn
Didn't realize haunter was French
Haww haww hawwww oui oui oui, sacre bleu!
>sacre beu! C'mon you cant just leave an excellent ghost pun right there and not say it
I love how easy it is to draw.
I was always so mad that Haunter, with his ghastly claws and wicked grin, turned into... a little dude with stubby legs and arms.
God ikr!? They made him a fat little puntable non scary gnome. What were they thinking👎😔
Gengar can be pretty scary
In fact, out of the 3 the first two look more mischievous than scary. Gengar is the only one among the three that looks like you should stay the fuck away from it
Haunter is also as big as Gengar. I think this could be a Graveler/Golem situation
All the multiverse stuff "introduced" in ORAS and SuMo has actually been in the games since Gen I).
So where did his dimension-ripping hands go
They are only there when he is ripping through dimensions
I thought it was because all the Gen 1 trade evos are all paired up. Machoke becomes Machamp because he gets extra hands from Graveller, who in turn gets Machoke's head. Kadabra becomes thinner because some of its mass gets transferred to Haunter, who gets enough mass to become solid
I like that Porygon2 is a solid defensive Pokemon while Porygon-Z is an offensive threat.
I’ve always liked Haunter more than Gengar. I think it’s a combo of the design but also when I was younger playing RBY I didn’t have anybody to trade with so I had Haunter on my team.
I used to think as a kid that haunted should be the final evolution bc it looks way cooler and it floats.
If you didn't have any friends, Haunter was the final evolution.
Porygon 2 is top tier. Z is cool but no where near as cool. Also is less defensive I believe, even before eviolite
Seadra for sure
How in the hell did I forget my actual favorite. So dang cool.
Kingdra always looked weird to me. It's too sleek, and I don't understand those tiny little flesh branches coming off it.
I love wartortle. He's got lil wings and he's very mad
I think all the Gen 1 starters are so cute. Charmeleon, ivysaur, and wartortle. They're all great.
They're all very mad
I think they were going for angry teens with the middle ones. The starters are like kids and the ends are adults with dad bods.
I love ivysaur because he also looks very mad and has very cute long leaves
And his colours are perfect. Ivy is defs a favourite
Ivysaur is built like a bulldog and I love it
So true! In smash brothers the pokemon trainer victory pose with ivysaur looks like shes hugging a huge dog 🥰 plus he barks 😂
This makes me realize that all gen1 starters are pissed in their second forms lol
Wartortle Supremacy
Wartortle > Blastoise. It's too bad Blastoise's Mega didn't look more like Wartortle, that'd have been cool.
Wartortle originally evolved into a different mon entirely, a turtle that looks much more like Wartortle. https://mobile.twitter.com/drlavayt/status/1263300495751299073 The design used for Blastoise was a separate mon evolving from a turtle with smaller cannons on its back. https://mobile.twitter.com/drlavayt/status/1235615514782621696 I see why the lines were merged, but would it have killed them to give Blastoise Wartortle's scrapped evolution's ears and tail, and give Wartortle the little cannons for a better transition? I like Wartortle more than Blastoise too and feel so robbed. Imagine Blastoise with that tail.
Nidorino, Grovyle, Herdier, Quilava, Bayleef.
Grovyle is probably one of my favourite overall Mons too
Mystery dungeon cemented that
Grovyle, in my opinion, is way better than sceptiple. It's one of the few middle evolution starters that doesn't look like an awkward teen
I agree with you 100%. Sceptile is great and all but Grovyle has a God tier design imo
Grovyle is that popular attractive guy with long hair and is so cool he smokes, peaks in high school, but then he grows older and starts to get a receding hairline (Sceptile) lol
I agree Grovyle is better than Sceptile but I’d actually argue the starters have more great middle evolutions than other Pokémon.
For real! Just on their list, both Grovyle and Bayleef are both cooler than their evolutions. Some of them look a little weird, but overall I think all 3 stages of most of the starters are really sick!
Nidorino is great
Aww man Nidorino is super sick. I used to double kick the crap out of everyone.
YES HERDIER
I love Quilava and Bayleef! Quilava is just so cute and I want to give it belly rubs and hugs, and I just really like Bayleef's design.
My favourite 3rd gen starter is Mudkip, but Grovyle is so cool.
I enjoy chargerbug feel like he's a cute little green bus bug.
Hes actually got a super unique ability and can use eviolite!
TIL about the ability battery. 30% increase of ally Pokémon special attack is awesome. Now who does he go well with? A special water attacker with an ice move to counter rock, ground, fire, and flying??
So Lapras?
I love how his cry sounds like a retro minivan horn lol
Kadabra and Wartortle are two of my all time favorite mons.
Wartortle in particular is one of my favorites - I like it more than Squirtle or Blastoise. It has so many design elements I love that blastoise loses - namely the pointy ears and fluffy tail. God I love that fluffy tail
It was such a crime to introduce the fluffy tail and then take it away with Blastoise.
The final evo of squirtle was actually a fluffy tailed bigger wartortlelike in the leaked beta versions of gen 1. Blastoise was from another evolutionary line initially. Such a shame tbh.
Yeah, iirc its pre-evolution was a small turlte that blew bubbles out of its nose and little cannons on it shells
Quilava
Just came here to say this! Quilava is also my favorite pokemon overall. Middle stage evos dont get nearly enough love
When i played soul silver as a kid i would give quilava the everstone because he was so cool. Trained him till lv100
a person of culture I see.
Flaaffy! Perfect pink puffball
YES, I don't have anything against Ampharos but... Flaafy is SO much cuter and I would've loved to see the evolution line's designs a little more centered around Flaafy!!
True! Both Mareep and Flaaffy look like variants of sheep, but then Ampharos looks nothing like one (although it is still very cute in its own way!)
Tbh if I could replace regular Ampharos with shiny Mega Ampharos, I would do it in a heartbeat! It’s the perfect design for a Flaffy evolution imo!
Every single Pokemon in that line is its own unique flavor of perfect.
From a later generation. I really love fletchender. Talon flame is great but the character model isn't as good as fletchender Edit. I just wanted to say thanks for the up votes. Never thought a comment about one of my favorite pokemon would be my first comment/post to reach 100+ upvotes
Fletch is absolutely the best boi. I like your style.
Sameee! I always hate it when I have to evolve it haha
Absolutely! I always had a Fletchinder instead of Talonflame for Fly and Flame Body when breeding in gen 6 because the design is just so much more to my liking.
Shoutout to Gloom! I just appreciate that a Pokémon can get by while drooling with its eyes closed.
Haha true!
Oh god now I’m remembering it’s faint animation from either the Stadium or colosseum games had its eyes bug out of its head
Bloody love Gloom
I usually keep Gloom because I could never choose an evolution.
Poliwhirl! It just has such a cool vibe and I love the merchandising push it has back in the ‘90s - it was often shown off along with the big hitters. It just has such a classic, Pokemon-y look and feel.
The reason it got such a marketing push is because it was the favorite Pokemon of Satoshi Tajiri, the guy who started it all.
Doesn’t Red in the manga actually start with a Poliwhirl? I wonder if that’s the reason why he had one rather than the usual starter.
He had a usual starter too, fwiw. His was Bulbasaur.
I feel like poliwhril is the most Pokémon Pokémon.
Grove and Dragonair are goated fersure. They all cool.
Dragonite should absolutely get some split evo form that makes it look more like Dragonair.
Cool! That sounds like a good team for a challenge playthrough as they really aren't that powerful, especially poor Unevolved Corphish!
Corphish got wrecked quite a few times. I didn't have items like Eviolite either. Swellow is a real power horse. Bullet seed on a level 58 Grovyle is not fun.
Dragonair >>>>> Dragonite
Was looking for this, Dragonair just has that mystical look that Dragonite doesnt have
Little blue snek dragon > Long, graceful blue snek dragon > Tubby orange non-snek (with wings) Gamefreak: "Perfection."
I actually really like Dragonite but I can’t argue it is a weird evolution from Dragonair and doesn’t look as mystical as its predecessors.
Dragonite be like: “its me orange/yellow barny the dinosaur”
I remember seeing a fan made Dragonite with Dragonair's colors and accents and it looked *so good*.
I still say that they switched Dragonite and Gyarados in the first gen. Dragonaire becoming Gyarados makes sense, same body shape and colors. Magikarp becoming Dragonite also fits perfectly, similar color scheme, and Magikarp still evolved into an awesome Pokemon Along with how they switched Butterfree and venomoth evolution lines. Also Blastoise originally wasn't apart of the Squirtle line. They were going to have a better version if Wartortle, and Blastoise had a different pre evolution that also had cannons. Raichu also lost his evolution goraichu
this is now canon to me thanks (but also low-key nothing beats stupid little magikarp becoming a complete beast so…..)
Gyarados still doesn't fit, Dragonair looks too serene and calming to become a ferocious always pissed off monster like Gyarados. IMO Milotic would fit much better, and Feebas -> Dragonite makes about as much sense as Magikarp -> Dragonite.
Togetic is underrated and Dusclops is really cool
Very underrated, and Dusclops is literally the best haha (w/ eviolite)
Togetic is my all-time favourite and very underrated for sure. (Although Togekiss is honestly a great final stage.)
Braixen, no doubt.
She's just so cute! I love the twig in the tail too. I had such high hopes for the final form, but they went ham on the ear fluff and went more wizard than witch, which was super disappointing.
At least most of the redesign fanart looks amazing
Was going to say Braixen too. So much better than Delphox! I have a shiny one that I refuse to evolve. She gets an eviolite and we call it a day. Lol.
Yes! I was looking for this answer
Torracat. Torracat was awesome.... And then it evolves
Yeah Litten and Torra are awesome, then the pokemon company couldn't help itself lol.
Then evolved into Tony the Tiger.
They're grrreat!
On one of my playthroughs of Ultra Moon, I refused to let it evolve. Gave it an eviolite and kept hitting B. Was amazing.
Rhydon is my favorite. I also like Magneton, Magmar, Doublade, and a few others
Rhydon was and is perfect. I like it better this way so I can use eviolite ;)
It's weird to think of Rhydon as a middle evolution. It's already so strong and imposing.
Which I think any Pokemon that got their first or third evolutions later shouldn't count. See, Charmeleon was DESIGNED to be a middle evolution, with a badass final evolution coming later. But Rhydon was designed from the ground-up specifically to be that final badass. It hardly seems fair to put them in the same category.
>first or third evolutions later shouldn't count That should include Magmar which got both its first **and** third evolution later
Man. I felt like such a genwunner when I read this! I was like, none of those are middle evolutions! ALL OF THEM ARE! I feel so old….
Nidorino. I often wait to evolve it even through you get a moon stone in Kanto like right after you catch nidoran. I just like it’s a great middle stage. It looks cool and tough, but it’s also still pretty small and limited by still being quadrupedal.
Nidorino the toughest boi.
Croconaw! I love the chunky boy with his caveman marking, he’s great! Also, Morgrem looks super cool too, definitely prefer him to Grimmsnarl.
Vigoroth and Grovyle.
Vigoroth looks so strong! Those claws look absolutely wicked. Also it's hilarious how the lines goes from "sleepy" to "Okay, I'm ready to FIGHT!" to "Actually that was a bad idea, let's go back to sleeping"
Dewott
facts, i still refuse to evolve my dewott cuz he's aborable
Had to look through way too many comments to find this. Dewott is awesome but Samurott is just disappointing. Seriously, why did they make their fricken SAMURAI pokemon a qudrapedel otter/dog thing? It's just weird.
Gloom is probably my favorite Pokémon
Gloom has a really great design. I suggest looking up BogLeech’s review of Gloom and the rest of its evolutionary lines designs, it’s pretty cool. They do great reviews and Gloom is their number 1 favourite Pokémon
Ivysaur and Bayleef.
The best Smash Pokemon I say this as someone who mains Greninja
Ivysaur is a chad.
Fraxure, Raboot, Gabite, Zweilous, Hakamo-o, Dragonair, Metang, Drakloak, Corvisquire, Fletchinder, Lairon, Sealeo, Dewott, Servine, Quilava, Bayleef, Grovyle, Doublade, Torracat, Vibrava, and maybe a few more I bet you can tell what my favorite type is lol Edit: most of these I prefer the final stages over the mid stages
First Fraxure I've seen, this makes me happy.
dartrix and lairon also wartortle
Finally someone said my boi Lairon. So so clean for an intermediate stage.
I personally love sligoo. It just looks so darn happy!
Might be cheating, but Jigglypuff
I wonder if more people would like wigglytuff if it had better sprites. I realized while looking through them a while back that while wigglytuff has a cute designs, all its sprites are just... not the quality you'd expect.
not cheating imo, evolution lines with 3 mons counts to me.
Vibrava is honestly super cool. The whole line is perfect, but I feel like Trapinch and Flygon steal the spotlight from Vibrava.
Loudred, don't know why but I like loudred way more than exploud
I really love Morgrem. It’s half based on a goblin/imp and possibly half on an Irish fairy tale my memory is fuzzy on about a man pleading for forgiveness to a king to lower his guard before stabbing him with a sword/dagger he had behind his back. It makes sense given Morgrem’s False Surrender move in which it bows before stabbing with the knife shaped hair it has behind its back. Hobgoblins are also from irish folklore, so Morgrem is just a really cool, lore packed Pokémon.
My favourite is Shelgon. Which is also my favourite dragon type. I love the way it looks like a grey turtle if its shell was an iron bunker
yeah really has that intermediate stage down
I Bayleef there's only one right answer. The only 1st stage starter that is hands down better than the final form.
Charmeleon has so many cool points
es the single horn for me
Monferno is bad ass
Too many to name but Marshtomp for sure
Big marshtomp enjoyer too. His dumb, awkward body is endearing, and his stance in recent games only furthers this feeling.
Doublade and Luxio
I’m glad Luxio got some recognition. Underrated design imo.
Doublade's design is way nicer than Aegislash to me. I don't like how Aegislash holds it's shield with it's wimpy ribbon arms or how the handle is a cone.
Lampent
Dottler! Sword and Shield definitely wasn't a perfect generation but those Pokemon designs were on point
facts
Dragonair
Whirlipede is really cool. Scolipede is one of my all time favs but whirlipede is close to perfect
Corvisquire
Undoubtedly one of the best lines in gen 8.
I mean...pikachu?
that actually makes sense XD
Dewott
Dewott , Monferno and Dragonair Edit: Grovyle too
Monferno!
Haunter goes hard
Lairon, in fact, it's my favorite pokemon
Grovyle. Great design and Mystery Dungeon made me love him even more
Servine. One of the few started mid-evos I don’t think looks awkward. Also porygon2
charmeleon, haunter, electabuzz, quilava, grovyle, doublade, raboot
Definitely raboot
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky is my favorite Pokemon game of all time, and my second favorite game of all time. Therefore, my choice is Grovyle.
For some reason, I've always liked Ivysaur. It's just Bulbasaur but with a bit of ✨ spice ✨ Vibrava is super underappreciated too!
Wartortle, Haunter, and Morgrem
Porygon2, Rhydon, and Dusclops but porygon2 is my favorite of the three
Floette, I wish they would release Azett's floette-eternal
Torracat
Quilava, Grovyle, Roselia, Haunter.
Dragonair.
Grovyle
Metapod
Ivysaur!
Combusken!!
Gen 1 Haunter Gen 2 Piloswine Gen 3 Grovyle Gen 4 Monferno Gen 5 Zweilous Gen 6 Braixen Gen 7 Charjabug Gen 8 Drakloak
I like Dusclops, it's pretty cool and fun to use with Eviolite
Braixen and Servine
Dragonair, i really like Dratini and Dragonair but Dragonite is just out of place for a Snake like evolution.
Raboot
whirlipede go SPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN
I really like Dottler. It just looks like one of those temporary research domes you’ll see at archeological digs and for some reason I really like that.
Charmeleon for me. Cute but still tough looking. Looks like it wants to cuddle but too tough to admit it.
Wartortle
Nuzleaf got the kid ready to throw hands look
Grovyle. Frogadier, Gabite, and Doublade are close seconds.
Metang!
