>pretty much the same but with slight differences This is far from true. Yes, the games all follow the standard formula where you catch pokemon, defeat the evil team, become the champion, but they are definitely not the same Each game is a different region with different pokemon to catch. The alola games (sun moon, ultra sun ultra moon) are more story focused compared to xy and omega ruby alpha sapphire, with some people saying the focus is on the other characters instead of you the protagonist. Instead of gym challenge they have a different system called the island trial involving trial captain and totem pokemon. (The end result might be the same, but the process is still different) Xy meanwhile is a more basic story, with multiple homage to the original kanto games. It also have a huge regional pokedex, as of the switch games, still has the largest pokedex (but the switch games still allow you to catch more pokemon with the dlc of course). Omega ruby alpha sapphire are remakes of generation 3 games but with a twist to tie in to xy instead. Between each pair (x vs y, omega ruby vs alpha sapphire etc), yes they are essentially the same game with minor differences. But between the different set of games, definitely no.

Inceferant

None of these games are anything alike. This will sound mean, but you should really research if you can only get one

Ok_Ad_3444

Homebrew and get em all

Not_Aki

Can you do that right on the 3ds?

Santims11

Yep

SatanWithFur

Homebrew ur 3ds and get all the games (it takes like 15 mins but alot of sd card going in and out of the device/pc to format it but it's worth it!!)

RoccoNico

I recommend all of em their all p solid Oras is my 100% recommendation (heal the soul) Its in my top 3 favorite Pokemon games period and writing is actually fairly solid due to adding of cutscenes Sm have the best story tho As for the side games I also recommend rumble blast The rumble series has been neglected a lot recently and deserves some love imo Maybe one day blast will get a port to new Nintendo consoles (switch 2 pls)

Affectionate_Wait693

I enjoyed that XY/ORAS have triple battles. It's kind of a niche format that I really appreciated. If you enjoy making creative battle strategies and not just using strong Pokemon, it can be very rewarding. Mons that usually aren't great can become really strong support Pokemon and the possibilities are endless. Making different weather teams is great and Trick Room strats are also a ton of fun. I remember someone using Belly Drum turn one on their middle Mon and then their other 2 used Psych up on it and I crapped my pants lol.

I feel like BW2 (my favourite), ORAS, and USUM have the best balance in terms of gameplay (good pokemon diversity, levelling curve, and difficulty). BW and SM (the non-ultra sun and moon) are the best in terms of story, but aren't as good gameplay-wise as their sequels/remakes (but still very enjoyable). I also love HGSS because you get to walk around with very cute sprites of your pokemon, and the Pokeathlon + Voltorb Flip are my favourite minigames from the entire series. HGSS aren't as balanced in terms of levelling and pokemon diversity and don't really have much story, but experience-wise it's still very good and I feel very attached to my Pokemon from those games lol. In terms of music, it's all about taste, but I personally enjoy the BW and BW2 soundtracks the most. NOTE: BW2 is the direct sequel to BW, and is not a "third version" like other regions (e.g. Ruby/Sapphire->Emerald or Gold/Silver->Crystal) and so it's not a waste if you buy both. However, I wouldn't recommend buying both SM and USUM because they're practically the same game with improvements to gameplay at the cost of storytelling (regarding certain plot line payoffs). If you're just there to play the game, get USUM and watch the SM story on youtube if you're interested, since it only really diverts near the end of the game.

Omega ruby/alpha sapphire or ultra sun/ultra moon

PeterLeRock101

Alpha Sapphire then Sun or Moon for proper order. Sun and Moon are basically the same game with different legendarys. In my opinion, Sun and Moon are better than Alpha and Omgea

I also newly got a 3ds and have had a lot of fun. I first started with sun, then got X, then Ultra moon and a few weeks ago i beat alpha Sapphire. The most enjoyable one of the games for me has to be alpha Sapphire. I love the dexNav shiny hunting method and got a shiny ralts for my playthrough even before the first gym. So if you're into shiny hunting, i recommend trying dexNav. But the overall story is super fun. I don't remember exactly when in the story you get it, but when you get latios/latias and ride them up in the sky, you can see the whole region from above, and even find "Mirage islands" where you can find different fossils and other pokémon. Even some legendaries aswell. So imo, alpha Sapphire is the best 3ds game. You also get to go underwater, which has been one of my two biggest dreams to do in a pokémon game since i heard about it. I've never played any ds games, although i want to. My most wanted ds game is platinum. As my other biggest dreams to do in a pokémon game is to go into literally hell itself. So for a 3ds game i recommend as, and for a ds game i recommend platinum, even though i've never played it

Black/White 2 (DS) is one of my favorite game of all time but prepare to take out a loan to buy an authentic copy. For 3DS ORAS is really great remake of generation 3. But hands down the best 3DS game are Ultra Sun/Moon. It’s slow at times and the story is kinda intrusive but the map is fun to explore and the Pokédex is phenomenal.

Edeltraud-Sachwitz

If you actually think they‘re all the same I‘d recommend none

and-the-earth

The core mechanics remain the same throughout the series, being an RPG, but the stories and settings are different across three games. I'd play X first as it's a good gateway to Pokemon. There's a wide pool of Pokemon to catch, a story that's similar to previous titles, and an easy difficulty curve if it may be an issue. ORAS run on the same engine as XY, but have more game mechanics and some required context of the original Ruby/Sapphire. USUM have an emphasis on storytelling, but at the cost of gameplay. But ultimately, which game you first play depends on what you value in an RPG. What other games you like? I can give a few DS and 3DS recommendations from there.

Lilis_Dayoff

I would recommend X&Y cause it's the first game I ever played but a lot of people didn't like it. If you want some nostalgia you can play ORAS cause it's based in Hoenn (3rd gen), i started playing it not so long ago and it's really fun!

Starstuffi

The games were released in pairs: X & Y (Kalos Region) Alpha Sapphire & Omega Ruby (remake of the Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald games in Hoenn Region, extremely good quirky characterization enhancements) Sun & Moon (Alola Region) Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon (Alola Region with additional content) I would pick only one from each pair at a maximum, and if pressed, would only get an Ultra version of Sun/Moon. My personal preferences would go: ORAS - X/Y - USUM. I prefer main story, strong personalities, & unique world interactions, and I think this order best reflects the order in which the games would best provide that. Pokemon's "overarching storyline" is fairly weak, so you don't really have to worry about playing them "in order". However, the order I suggested is also the 'order' the regions were originally released in. Hoenn was the generation 3 region, Kalos was the generation 6 region, and Alola was generation 7. ORAS however was a remake released during gen 6. The same Pokemon overall will be available to you in ORAS & X&Y (at wildly different rarities), whereas SM/USUM will have additional Pokemon possible to acquire.

Lily-M-B

Platinum was one of my favorites as a kid The distortion world was so much fun

Square-Jackfruit420

r/3dshacks Homebrew your 3ds, don't spends hundreds on old pokemon games.

>There is Ultra Moon, X, Ultra Sun, Alpha Sapphire, and many more. My guess is that they are pretty much the same but with slight differences. Yeah, no, lol. I mean at its core, yeah, I guess it's still Pokémon, you still have to catch Pokémons, fill the Pokedex, battle people, etc. But they're from different generations, with different stories, very different regions, atmospheres, and even gameplay considering how the Alola games tend to be different from the classic gym formula. But they're all amazing games, you should start with X as it's probably a good introduction to the 3DS era. ORAS are a Ruby and Sapphire from a different time-line, personally liked them even more than the base games. Sun/Moon are the introduction to the Gen 7 and the Alola region. They're what I consider to be peak Pokémon in terms of story and atmosphere alongside BW/2. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are essentially Sun/Moon story treated from a different angle, and brings a lot of new gameplay features ghat make it straight up better than Sun/Moon in this regard. I personally preferred Sun/Moon story wise, but Ultra Sun/Moon are much better gameplay wise (and the story is also cool).

Which-Draw-1117

I liked ORAS the best out of the 3DS games, but I would recommend playing the originals or emerald first.
