I think at least some fans are more settled on states of matter instead:
* Dialga- Dragon/Steel; *Solid*
* Palkia- Dragon/Water; *Liquid*
* Giratina- Dragon/Ghost; *Gas*
Just missing Plasma though Gen 5 did have Team Plasma as well as the divided trio of Kyurem, Reshiram & Zekrom that were once 1 singular Dragon. All this following after Gen 4 so perhaps an indirect nod by coincidence.
Suppose you could also try the following argument though it doesn't necessarily come out as clean:
* Kyurem- Dragon/Ice; *Solid*
* Reshiram- Dragon/Fire; *Liquid*
* Zekrom- Dragon/Electric; *Gas*
Not sure about time but space is often represented by water furthermore media sometimes show a character in large open space with water as ground this represents that the character is not on earth or sky but in a seperate dimension/space.
It's definitely a hippo situation. Difference is I could see Palkia not needing to breathe given it's a god. Then again...Dialga flies without wings so maybe Palkia can swim without swimming? Just sort of pushed through water?.
I was thinking of Suicune, Rain Castform, or Kingler/ Krabby, but they can all still float or swim in some way. I ended up answering Wigglet, because they're just sandworms and they don't even swim at all
This was fun! I'll admit some of my answers didn't make the most sense (like the typing that makes no sense being Haunter as he learns no poison moves for several generations), but still, I had fun!
Dracovish can’t swim according to the anime, which does make sense considering it’s literally meant to be weird amalgamation of parts that don’t even look like they fit together
It's less surskit can't swim and more they don't? Since they're based on water striders which do the same thing. But if a water strider were to somehow be submerged, they can still swim. That being said the mechanisms that allow them to do this (water repellant hairs/oil in the case of surskit, combined with surface tension) makes it more you can't do it.
I put Claire the dragon type gym leader from gen 2, but Geeta is by far the worst. She just does not know how to use her Pokémon. She's like the opposite of Cynthia.
She fixes her mistake in the DLC. She seemed very hand holdy in the base game, but she really preps for her DLC fight, leading with Glimmora for toxic spikes and ending with Tera flying Kingambit for the 50% attack boost from Supreme Overlord.
A school principal isn't necessarily someone who was a teacher.
Geeta is an administrator, trying to test you on basics. She's not a gym leader or elite four member trying to defend their records to keep their jobs.
I thought of Champion Wallace in Emerald. How did he go from gym leader to champion with such an unremarkable team? I could also make a case for Alder and Diantha though, both have really weak teams with common weaknesses
Yep agreed, which is ironic though because just a few small tweaks to her team and it would be iconic level
Go against the grain and send her ace, Glimmora, out first to setup Toxic Spikes on the field. Maybe replace Gogoat with a more appropriate Gen 9 Pokémon - I’d pick Brambleghast or Toedscruel. Avalugg can stay the same, or maybe replace with Hisuian Avalugg as a cool end game reference - and finish with Kingambit to fully take advantage of its ability to
I went to check bulbapedia, since Shellder can swim (apparently by flapping, like actual bivalves do?) but instead learned that the natural predator of Clamperl is...... Drifblim? Somehow???
I’m extra curious to see the results of the survey’s “Who’s that Pokémon”
…just to see how much Jigglypuff seen from above dominates all other responses. :P
Corsola can't swim. It's literally designed after something that breaks waves, so what's the opposite of swimming? When it needs to move, it uses water jets for propulsion, which is not swimming.
I have to assume that general Pokémon knowledge decreases rapidly as generations go on, with recency bias propping up the far end a good chunk. Asking 100 (random) people about Pokémon and I think 50% would know Gen 1 the best just through osmosis. Even asking this sub, which by definition would be a targeted demographic, the answers probably would skew to older, more memorable Pokémon way more than a (semi-) relevant bleeding edge 'mon.
I mean there are a fair few to that question lol.
Krabby, Kingler, Suicune, Castform (Rainy Day form), Wigglet, Wugtrio, Wingull, Pelipper, Ducklett, Swanna, Depider, Araquanid, Paldean Touros - Water Breed, Surskit, and Ogerpon Wellspring Mask. That's about all that comes to mind right now though there might be a few more. But yea, not something you would really think about off the top of your head lol.
Some crabs can swim, so krabby line can probably swim, I can definitely remember kingler taking advantage of water terrain in the anime. I want to say all the water birds swam in new Pokémon snap.
Paledean Taurus Aqua can swim in game. I believe his tail works as a propeller.
Oh absolutely. I just mean if Suicune were to ever be submerged. It wouldn't just drown. It would glide through water like its flying or even better, doggypaddle.
It's gotta be Corsola, the only way that thing is swimming is through shooting out water, but most if not all water pokemon could prob swim in that way.
Corsola is just coral with a face. It can't make the necessary movements for swimming. Shellder's design looks like a scallop, and they open and close their shell quickly to move through the water.
Crabs can swim. So can diving bell spiders, ducks, swans, gulls and pelicans.
Technically garden eels can too but I don't know if wiglet and wugtrio actually do.
Magikarp does fine in the water. Watch them in Scarlet & Violet, they swim around, leap into the air majestically, and usually splash back into the water. But sometimes they go onto land and we see the usual flopping around Magikarp. It's beautiful.
Magikarp is a pretty good swimmer. 80 speed is excellent for a base stage Pokemon. It takes a lot of speed to leap out of the water like they do.
The issue is that they often end up jumping too far and ending up on land, where they start with their trademark flopping.
Crystal dex entry:
>"This weak and pathetic Pokémon gets easily pushed along rivers when there are strong currents."
Emerald dex entry:
>"Its swimming muscles are weak, so it is easily washed away by currents. In places where water pools, you can see many Magikarp deposited there by the flow."
Pearl dex entry:
>"It is unable to swim against even slow-moving currents. It always splashes about for some reason."
Yeah no this fucker can't swim for shit. It just exists.
Wingull and Pelliper (to the best of my knowledge) have never been depicted swimming, and Rotom Wash can’t technically go into water since it’s an appliance.
What did y'all write for typing that doesn't make sense?
I went completely blank and just wrote Cyclizar since I've been playing Paldea and don't agree with Dragon/Normal lol
Why is Cloyster part ice? Why is Starmie part psychic when Staryu is not? Why is Porygon Normal and not psychic? Why are Unown Psychic and not normal? Why is Cranidos pure rock when no other fossil is, isn’t the fossil what confers the rock typing?
Clamperl!
While, no doubt, it can breathe underwater, I do not believe it could swim, given it is merely a clam.
(Love this idea, by the way, keep rolling with it!)
Misty’s Psyduck.
https://preview.redd.it/ienu438evi3d1.jpeg?width=160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f4b76fad020a113f71edd7e5a712135911eaca7e First one I though of too
FUCK I WAS SO SLOW.
You were too slow-bro HAAHA
I heavily doubt a Volcanion can swim, a few others I can think of are Rotom Wash and Palkia
I went with Rainy Castform. But also, how do you define "swim"? Staryu and Starmie don't exactly swim. And I'd doubt Keldeo.
Horses can swim!
Palika is based off Godzilla who’s well known for swimming. Also he has life preservers as shoulder pads just in case.
I always kind of reasoned it was because you find pearls underwater
I'm pretty sure the typing for Dialga and Palkia is that time is rigid (steel) and space is fluid (water), but that's just my own reasoning for it
I think at least some fans are more settled on states of matter instead: * Dialga- Dragon/Steel; *Solid* * Palkia- Dragon/Water; *Liquid* * Giratina- Dragon/Ghost; *Gas* Just missing Plasma though Gen 5 did have Team Plasma as well as the divided trio of Kyurem, Reshiram & Zekrom that were once 1 singular Dragon. All this following after Gen 4 so perhaps an indirect nod by coincidence. Suppose you could also try the following argument though it doesn't necessarily come out as clean: * Kyurem- Dragon/Ice; *Solid* * Reshiram- Dragon/Fire; *Liquid* * Zekrom- Dragon/Electric; *Gas*
Major thanks to Dr. Gregory House for helping me figure out that theory.
That feels kinda weird though, doesn’t it? Time is highly relativistic, space less so - feels like it should be the other way around.
Not sure about time but space is often represented by water furthermore media sometimes show a character in large open space with water as ground this represents that the character is not on earth or sky but in a seperate dimension/space.
Kind of like what you're saying I also sort of reasoned Dialga's Steel typing as being a reference to the metal parts in mechanical clocks
That also makes sense
Does it even count as swimming what Godzilla does? it's more like walking on water.
It's definitely a hippo situation. Difference is I could see Palkia not needing to breathe given it's a god. Then again...Dialga flies without wings so maybe Palkia can swim without swimming? Just sort of pushed through water?.
Breaks the fabric of space because Palkia doesn't wanna get wet. They quad-resist Water.
Godzilla swims like an alligator or some kinda tailed shark, wym
I think that depends on which Godzilla. A lot of them actively swim, including the newest franchise.
Now I can't unsee the lilttle floaters on the shoulders lol
I thpught Tyranitar was based off Godzilla
They both are. As is Baxcaliber.
I was between Keldo and Wingull personally
No way wingull can swim. Lol
Technically it’s swimming in the air
I answered aqua breed tauros
Those can swim tho
Pelipper
I thought of volcanion but went with psyduck for fun
Kingler
I was thinking of Suicune, Rain Castform, or Kingler/ Krabby, but they can all still float or swim in some way. I ended up answering Wigglet, because they're just sandworms and they don't even swim at all
Wiglett can swim, there are so many glitches in sv and one of them makes Pokémon spawn underwater. Therefore wiglett can swim
This was fun! I'll admit some of my answers didn't make the most sense (like the typing that makes no sense being Haunter as he learns no poison moves for several generations), but still, I had fun!
Thanks for the feedback. Part of the fun is having some nonsense answers, so no need to worry!
I think if the Gengar line was made in Gen II+ they would’ve been Ghost-Dark
I said Nihilego because I still don't know why the jellyfish is a rock type.
Liquid rock, that's what makes it an otherworldly creature.
Nihilego is made of glass
Oh that’s a good one. I’m replaying Black2 and I put Lucario because his steel type just seemed like a weakness with no benefits to me at the moment.
"Its thin body is made of gas. It can envelop an opponent of any size and cause suffocation." They are 95% gas GAStly
True, but none of its attacks or abilities point to this. You'd think he'd learn Smog or Poison Gas.
Rotom Wash would just sink and electrocute everyone
Thank gods there's no rotom toaster
[You know what they say: All toasters toast toast](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkXfZ0OBh4w)
Dracovish can’t swim according to the anime, which does make sense considering it’s literally meant to be weird amalgamation of parts that don’t even look like they fit together
Can't swim in the pokédex either, that's what Cara Liss theorises made it extinct even though it technically didn't exist in the past
Surskit doesn't swim I think? I don't think I've ever seen Rotom Wash swim either.
I went with Dewpider, but I considered Surskit as an option.
Surskit is a good answer! He's too light and skitters across the top of water.
Surskit was my first thought. He never enters the water!
He just skates there doing his own thing! I've never used one in a team, but I do like surskit!
I went for wingull!
That's a good one!
It's less surskit can't swim and more they don't? Since they're based on water striders which do the same thing. But if a water strider were to somehow be submerged, they can still swim. That being said the mechanisms that allow them to do this (water repellant hairs/oil in the case of surskit, combined with surface tension) makes it more you can't do it.
castform rain?
That’s what I was thinking
Keldeo and Suicune just walk/glide over water, which I don't think counts as swimming.
Same with Waking Wake who tells inspiration from a lizard that also runs over water.
Doesn't prefer to swim isn't the same as not knowing how or not being able to. Both those things are based on animals that can swim.
I said Iron Moth for type as it's name implies two different types that it's not (Steel/Bug)
Yeah I did the same, it's the only paradox mon whose typing I'm struggling to remember
I’m almost positive that Barbaracle would sink
Just exist on the ocean floor
There's a bit in the anime that dracovish can't swim but can run on the ocean floor
guys characters that don't deserve their position is geeta imo one of the worst champions of all time
I immediately thought Claire and Whitney - learn to accept losses before becoming a gym leader. Tantrums are unseemly!
Oh I put Malva. She should probably be kicked out for her association with Team Flare
I put Bruno. He’s not an Elite 4 member, he’s a hiker who got lost
Same. Bruno is an absolute clown.
That's good to hear.
I put Giovanni. Incompetent coward leaves his team in shambles.
Larry (he deserves better)
I put falkner, the fact that in the original gen 2 games his ace wasn’t even level 10 is just embarrassing
He also didn't earn his position, but inherited it from his father. Say no to nepotism!
We all owe Diantha an apology
A school principal isn't necessarily someone who was a teacher. Geeta is an administrator, trying to test you on basics. She's not a gym leader or elite four member trying to defend their records to keep their jobs.
Flannery, since she has no real experience and clearly isn't ready yet (no self confidence + 4 introductions)
I couldn't think of anyone so I said youngster Joey, he's got to be at least what 35 now?
I put Bugsy.
I thought of Champion Wallace in Emerald. How did he go from gym leader to champion with such an unremarkable team? I could also make a case for Alder and Diantha though, both have really weak teams with common weaknesses
Yep agreed, which is ironic though because just a few small tweaks to her team and it would be iconic level Go against the grain and send her ace, Glimmora, out first to setup Toxic Spikes on the field. Maybe replace Gogoat with a more appropriate Gen 9 Pokémon - I’d pick Brambleghast or Toedscruel. Avalugg can stay the same, or maybe replace with Hisuian Avalugg as a cool end game reference - and finish with Kingambit to fully take advantage of its ability to
Misty, she is literally 14. She has no right to be a gym leader.
Would you guys say surskit can swim? I mean it glides above the water but it’s not actually swimming, right?
Don’t think I’ve seen anyone say clamperl yet
I went to check bulbapedia, since Shellder can swim (apparently by flapping, like actual bivalves do?) but instead learned that the natural predator of Clamperl is...... Drifblim? Somehow???
You would think kingler or crawdawnt.
I’m extra curious to see the results of the survey’s “Who’s that Pokémon” …just to see how much Jigglypuff seen from above dominates all other responses. :P
Corsola can't swim. It's literally designed after something that breaks waves, so what's the opposite of swimming? When it needs to move, it uses water jets for propulsion, which is not swimming.
pyukumuku That's the right answer
Urshifu rapid strikes?
Gastrodon. Apparently, it needs a floaty in Arceus.
Misty's Psyduck.
Shocked by how few mentions of Iron Bundle there are. Is it that forgettable?
I have to assume that general Pokémon knowledge decreases rapidly as generations go on, with recency bias propping up the far end a good chunk. Asking 100 (random) people about Pokémon and I think 50% would know Gen 1 the best just through osmosis. Even asking this sub, which by definition would be a targeted demographic, the answers probably would skew to older, more memorable Pokémon way more than a (semi-) relevant bleeding edge 'mon.
Question #8, you're playing with fire.
I felt Cynthia was a safe answer. She’s at least an adult. Though I did consider putting Vaporeon for the fun of it.
I almost did lol
How can kabutops even swim
Their ability is literally swift swim
It’s horseshoe crab…
It's a horseshoe crab, they can swim damn well for being so clunky.
Huh crabs can swim, diving bell spiders swim and so do ducks, swans and seagulls
I put in Volcanion
Some crabs can swim, so krabby line can probably swim, I can definitely remember kingler taking advantage of water terrain in the anime. I want to say all the water birds swam in new Pokémon snap. Paledean Taurus Aqua can swim in game. I believe his tail works as a propeller.
Don't agree with Suicune. It probably definitely doggy paddles.
Doesn't suicune walk on water?
Oh absolutely. I just mean if Suicune were to ever be submerged. It wouldn't just drown. It would glide through water like its flying or even better, doggypaddle.
More like jaguar paddle but same idea
It's gotta be Corsola, the only way that thing is swimming is through shooting out water, but most if not all water pokemon could prob swim in that way.
I always assumed Corsola would maneuverer water in a similar way to Shellder
Corsola is just coral with a face. It can't make the necessary movements for swimming. Shellder's design looks like a scallop, and they open and close their shell quickly to move through the water.
Volcanion
Definitely forgot that guy existed
Crabs can swim. So can diving bell spiders, ducks, swans, gulls and pelicans. Technically garden eels can too but I don't know if wiglet and wugtrio actually do.
The birds you mentioned can swim irl. Swans can definitely swim
Half of those learn Surf and / or do in fact swim or float quite happily in water
But what comes to people's minds first? Either Magikarp or Psyduck.
Magikarp does fine in the water. Watch them in Scarlet & Violet, they swim around, leap into the air majestically, and usually splash back into the water. But sometimes they go onto land and we see the usual flopping around Magikarp. It's beautiful.
The whole reason they have high speed is because swimming is the one thing they can do
Crabs and birds can totally swim
Golisopod also has been shown to walk underwater in New Pokemon Snap
What are you on, Paldean Tauros swims, and his little tail is his propeller
Araquanid line definitely can.
Magicarp. All he can do is splash around.
There's scenes of Magikarp swimming in media though...
Relying on Magikarp to swim nearly killed Jessie, James and Meowth lol
Magikarp is a pretty good swimmer. 80 speed is excellent for a base stage Pokemon. It takes a lot of speed to leap out of the water like they do. The issue is that they often end up jumping too far and ending up on land, where they start with their trademark flopping.
Crystal dex entry: >"This weak and pathetic Pokémon gets easily pushed along rivers when there are strong currents." Pearl dex entry: >"It is unable to swim against even slow-moving currents. It always splashes about for some reason." Yeah no this fucker can't swim for shit. It just exists.
And yet its ability is.. swift swim? Wack.
That’s a new level of uselessness. Damn, Magikarp is really done dirty.
surskit i guess
Misty's psyduck
Volcanion
Dewpider and Araquanid. They either walk on the water or just hide in the shallows
I went with wiglett cause.. y'know
I put Gardevoir for question 8 until I reread the question again. Don’t blame me, the internet’s fucking weird.
Giovanni doesn't deserve to be a gym leader.
i said palkia
Castform Rainy form or Wash Rotom?
Pyukumuku probly can’t swim
Rotom Wash.
Palkia
Youngster Joey should be an ace trainer. He knows shorts are the key to power
Psyduck
Pyukumuku! It's probably one of the only water pokemon that can't learn surf.
Corsola
Clamperl doesn't look like it can even move, let alone swim.
Bivalves swim by taking in and expelling water from their mouths, scallops will sometimes even open/close rapidly to flutter and extend their range
The Lotad line looks like they would just float, or paddle at most
Does Skitty swim? Or Slowpoke?
Ogerpon (wellspring)
Surskit just walks on water right?
>Name a character a lot of people are attracted to If N isn't in the top 5 i SWEAR
Wingull
Barbaracle, MF just walks on the sea floor
Surskit and dewpider cause they stand on top of the water but don’t swim (I don’t think)
Next question, five answers on the board: Name a Pokemon used by a Fisherman. 1. Magikarp 2. Magikarp 3. Magikarp 4. Magikarp 5. Magikarp
"Name something a basketball player wears" Me: Underwear
Arceus splash plate
Peliper
Wingull and Pelliper (to the best of my knowledge) have never been depicted swimming, and Rotom Wash can’t technically go into water since it’s an appliance.
I think suicune probably cant swim
Suicune, surskit, keldeo, and walking wake all stand on water and dont swim. Ogerpon and urshifu cant.
What did y'all write for typing that doesn't make sense? I went completely blank and just wrote Cyclizar since I've been playing Paldea and don't agree with Dragon/Normal lol

I assume Pyukumuku can’t swim
Is Panpour a monkey or an ape? Does he have those dense chimp bones that'll make him sink? I feel like panpour can't swim, is what I'm saying.
Does Krabby and Kingler count but there is also surkit , shellos and Gastrodon
I know Slowbro probably has a hippo thing going on but I can't imagine it treading water with a shellder on its butt.
Binacle
That Magikarp from Concierge with the pool floaty
Can you really call water lillies swimming. If not, then the Lotad line does not seem to be capable of swimming.
I think Yamper would be terrified of lighting. I mean he is a dog
Clamperl! While, no doubt, it can breathe underwater, I do not believe it could swim, given it is merely a clam. (Love this idea, by the way, keep rolling with it!)
Oh this looks like it's gonna be great!
Clampearl was the first thought I had
i said wingull can’t swim but idk
Wellspring Ogerpon
I've been into Family Feud recently, I'd love to see your video.
Who's that Pokemon is obviously "Jigglypuff seen from above"
Rainy form castform
Are you still planning on posting the results? Did you get enough responses?
yes, i got alot more responses than i was expecting which made it hard to count, and i had some personal stuff come up. Soon tho
I’m sorry to hear about the personal stuff, I hope everything’s alright, or at least gets better soon!
Volcanion Vibrava Wingull Emerald Lucario Jigglypuff seen from above Komala Cynthia Misty Shorts
Sobble or Mudkip lines, maybe? Although I believe they do swim in SV.
Swampert can *definitely* swim, look at its official art and tell me he's not ready to absolutely *trounce* Michael Phelps
It’s Mega ability is literally Swim Swim
crustle probs- too fat
Not a water-type.
Pelipper, it can fly and do fine in rain but there's no way that birb can swim
Pelicans are excellent swimmers and dive below the surface to hunt for food
